Accreditation processes are extremely beneficial to
institutions preparing educators to work with our P-
12 students. These external review processes pro-
vide a fair and accurate assessment of the institu-
tion's viability in producing quality educators,
through programs that meet the highest of standards
in candidate knowledge, skills, and dispositions;
assessment; clinical experiences and field place-
ments; diversity; faculty pedagogy, scholarship and
service to the profession; and overall governance of
the professional education unit. We are extremely
appreciative for all those partnering districts, sup-
porters, faculty, staff, and students who work daily
to ensure our programs are a success.
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE) assesses institutions using a
rigorous performance-based review process. This
process helps to ensure that institutions are provid-
ing future classrooms with top-notch candidates to
meet the growing needs and challenges of the 21st
century classrooms. Being reaccredited by NCATE
is a huge accomplishment. It provides current and
future students, employers, districts, and the greater
community with an affirmation that Harris-Stowe
State University is living up to its College of Educa-
tion's mission, to produce "Effective Teachers for a
Diverse Society."
If most of us were to reflect on a teacher who made
the greatest impact in our lives, many would be re-
flecting on a teacher who had their training and
foundation at this great institution. NCATE's
"stamp of approval" continues to validate what we
do at Harris-Stowe and our right to claim our posi-
tion as a front-runner in the preparation of the na-
tion's finest educators.

The College of Education invited faculty and staff to a screening of Waiting for Superman. This documentary has been described as a heartbreaking commentary on the “beleaguered state of the American public school system.” , The viewing of Waiting for Superman took place immediately following the Faculty and Pro-fessional Staff Meeting, on Friday, March 4, 2011, at 3 p.m. in the Mini Auditorium, HGA Room 311. A brief discussion was held after the film.
