à la renommée de notre port, couronnécomme « Port d’excellence pour son accueil et

le professionnalisme de son équipe.»

Véritable poumon économique de notre île, leport de Gustavia est sans cesse à la recherche

de la satisfaction de nos marins et c’est ainsique nous avons mis en service le nouveau quai

de « l’hôtel de la collectivité » qui offre 36 places à l’année. Nous avons également

modernisé notre système de gestion informatique des clairances qui, grâce à la

création de notre site web « portdegustavia.fr »,permet aux capitaines de préparer 24 heures à

l’avance, leur clairance d’arrivée comme de départ en y trouvant de surcroît, tous les

renseignements nécessaires pour leur escale.

further renown of our port, known for the “excellence of its service and professionalism of its staff.”

One of the primary economic factors of the island, the port is continually seeking to meetthe needs of all of its clients, which is why wehave added the new dock at the “Hôtel de la

Collectivité,” offering 36 year-round slips. We have also modernized our computerized

clearance system, and with the creation of ourwebsite, portdegustavia.fr, captains can now

take care of entry and departure paperwork upto 24 hours in advance as well as check online

for all the information needed for their arrival in Saint Barth.

n Le navire doit être à jour de ses documents (papiers d’identificationdu navire et assurances). Assurez-vous que toutes les personnes à bord sont munies des pièces d’identité nécessaires pour entrer sur le territoire de Saint-Barthélemy.

n Appelez la capitainerie par VHF Canal 12 avant toute manœuvre. n Aucun navire de passage n'est autorisé à manœuvrer à quai et sur

les bouées entre 17h00 et 07h00. n Tout navire qui entre et sort du port doit emprunter le chenal

d'accès. La vitesse maximale autorisée dans toute la zone portuaireest de 3 noeuds.

n La baignade, la pêche et tous les sports nautiques doivent s'effectuer en dehors de la zone portuaire en respectant les règles propres à chaque activité.

n Des bacs sélectifs sont prévus pour le tri des ordures ménagères (verres et canettes directement dans le bac prévu et autres déchets dans un sac en plastique et dans les bacs). Les autres déchets doivent être déposés directement au service de propreté à Public.

n Les barbecues ne peuvent se faire sur les bateaux amarrés à quai et sur les bouées. Pensez à ne pas déranger votre voisin avec le bruit (musique, travaux...).

n Il est strictement interdit de rejeter les eaux de fonds de cales dans le port.

n Nous vous conseillons d’éteindre vos radars.n Seul le capitaine ou un membre d’équipage sont autorisés à effectuer

les formalités d’entrée ou de sortie du navire.

RULES & REGULATIONS

n All documents for the boat must be up-to-date (ID, registration, insurance...). Please be sure that all persons aboard have all necessarydocuments (ie: passport and visas...) required to enter the territory of St. Barthélemy.

n Call the harbormaster's office on VHF channel 12 before making any maneuvers.

n Boats are not authorized to maneuver at the dock or on buoys at night, between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00am.

n All boats that enter and leave the port must use the access channel. The maximum speed allowed in the port zone is three knots.

n Swimming, fishing, and all nautical sports must take place outside of the port zone, respecting the appropriate rules for each activity.

n Household trash must be separated for recycling before left in the trash area on the dock (cans and bottles together in the container provided; all other trash in plastic bags then in containers provided). All other trash and large items must be taken directly to the incinerator in Public.

n BBQs cannot be used aboard boats anchored at the dock or on buoys. Try not to disturb your neighbors with too much noise (music, hammering, etc.).

n It is strictly forbidden to throw stagnant water from the hull of the boat into the harbor.

n We recommend that you shut off your radar.n Only the captain of the vessel or a member of the crew is authorized

to take care of entry and departure clearances.

Zefria.Ten of the magnificent yachts in the 2012 St Barth Bucket were designed by Ed Dubois, an Englishmanwhose love for the sea has translated into a top-notch career as a naval architect. “I have loved boats since I was a kid,” says Dubois, who first attended the Bucket back in 2000 with just one of his boats in the race. As the race grew in stature, so did his presence. “The Bucket is my boat show. I bring potential clients here—some are repeat clients who have become friends—and the Bucket gives us a stage on which to act our play.” In 2012, a new class was added to the Bucket fleet, Les Mademoiselles des Mers, with 11 entries,including the 10 Dubois yachts, allowing them to race against each other.

A love of boats“I made model boats at the age of five and sailed them on Round Pond in London’s

Kensington Gardens,” Dubois recalls, noting that his grandfather and mother had ties tothe Royal Navy. After learning the ropes at a sailing camp, Dubois got his first 16’ wooden

sailboat at the age of 16 and kept it at a sailing club in the Thames Estuary. “I decided to become a yacht designer at the age of 17 with all the naïve assumptions of

someone that age,” he admits. Luckily for Dubois, there was a three-year college course innaval architecture adapted to yacht design in Southampton, England, the country’s

yachting epicenter. He graduated in 1974, worked for Alan Buchanan naval architects inthe Channel Islands, and his career was launched.

L’Amour de la voile“À 5 ans, je construisais des modèles que je lançais sur Round Pond à Londres” se rappelle Ed Dubois, dont la mère et le grand-père ont des attaches à la Royal Navy. Initié à la voileen colonie de vacances, Dubois acquit son premier voilier en bois de 5 mètres à l’âge de 16 ans, qu’il garde dans un club de voile situé à l’estuaire de la Tamise. “J’ai décidé de devenir concepteur de yachts à 17 ans, fort des certitudes naïves de cet âge-là,” avoue-t-il. Heureusement pour lui, un cours d’architecture navale adaptée à la conception des yachtsest offert dans un collège de Southampton, l’épicentre de la voile en Angleterre. Diplôméen 1974, Dubois rejoint les architectes navals d’Alan Buchanan, dans les îles de la Manche.Sa carrière était lancée.

Toujours plus grandsDepuis ses débuts, Ed Dubois est le témoin des plus grands changements dans la

conception des yachts en termes de dimensions et de matériaux. Au départ, les plus grandsd’entre eux mesuraient entre 21 et 25 mètres (70 à 80 pieds). Pour donner une idée de

l’évolution exponentielle des dimensions, il est à noter que Dubois élabore actuellement levoilier qui sera le plus grand jamais construit. Lorsqu’il sera achevé en 2016, ce dernier

mesurera 100 mètres de long (330 pieds) et sera dôté d’un mât de 125 mètres (410 pieds).Utilisant 17 tonnes de fibre de carbone, le voilier exigera plus d’un million d’heures de travail pour sa construction. “Le défi consiste à savoir à la fois fabriquer puis contrôler lesvoiles d’un navire d’une telle dimension,” explique Dubois, manifestement exalté par la

tâche. Espérons que ce nouveau voilier Dubois participera également à la Bucket dans uneîle que l’achitecte naval affectionne tout particulièrement. “St Barth est la seule île antillaise

« sophistiquée »” dit-il, en lorgnant le quai où dix de ses “bébés” attendent le début de lacourse. L’un d’entre eux, Lady B qui s’étire sur 44,7 mètres, gagnera dans sa classe.

Arrivé second dans l’ensemble, il placera un voilier Dubois au centre du cercle des vainqueurs de la Bucket. n

Bigger and biggerSince his early days in the industry, the biggest changes in yacht design have been size andmaterials, especially as when Dubois began the biggest sailing yachts were the maxis at 70’to 80’. Illustrating the dramatic shift in size, Dubois is currently designing what should bethe largest sailboat ever built when it is finished in 2016: at 100 meters (330’) in lengthwith a 125-meter mast (410’) comprising 17 tons of carbon fiber, the construction of thisboat will require more than one million man hours. “The challenge is how to build andcontrol the sails on a boat that size,” he explains, clearly intrigued by the challenge. Hopefully this Dubois yacht will also make it to the Bucket regatta on an island Dubois isvery fond of: “Saint Barth is the only island in the West Indies that has any sophisticatedstyle,” he says, looking out at the docks where ten of his “babies” were waiting to race. bateaux pour celui du mobilier sur mesure. Aussi,l’homme représente t-il la nouvelle génération des Edmiston, collaborant avec son père ainsi

qu’avec des partenaires à l’international tel que Robert Shepherd à New York, pour contribuer à

l’essor de l’affaire familiale.

Les défis à venirEdmiston & Company reste le leader incontesté

dans l’univers des yachts grâce notamment à l’introduction du premier registre informatique.

Même si pour Woody Edmiston la conjoncture estdifficile dans le milieu industriel, le maître mot restel’innovation: « Nous respectons nos concurrents tout encontinuant à innover » dit-il en tablant sur la variété

des expériences à vivre sur un superyacht tels que les réunions, l’exploration sous-marine

et les vacances familiales durant lesquelles les enfants peuvent apprendre la voile.

Notre marin s’est entraîné à St Barth pour la Bucket,aussi à l’aise qu’un poisson dans l’eau. « J’adore cette

île, nous confie t-il. L’ambiance est européenne avec unevraie saveur antillaise, n’est-ce pas ? ». Déjà immergédans le milieu des courses de voiliers autour de l’île,

il pense y ouvrir une succursale d’Edmiston & Company quelques mois par an. « Je pourrais

vraiment m’occuper des intérêts de nos clients ici » dit-il,les yeux bleus étincelants. n

Family affair"My father has been in the boat business for 45 years," says Edmiston, referring to the family business, Edmiston & Company, started by his dad,Nicholas, and developed into a leading authority inthe super yacht industry. Edmiston charters, sellsand manages some of the world's finest yachts over40m. "We also do project management for newbuilds," he explains, pointing out that his brotherJamie was part of the firm for over a decade beforegoing into the bespoke furniture business. NowWoody represents the new generation at Edmiston,working closely with his father, and internationalcolleagues such as Robert Shepherd in Edmiston'sNew York office, to build the business and take it tothe next stage of development.

Future challengesEdmiston is maintaining its trailblazing identity bybeing the first in the industry to switch to a digitalyacht directory. "This web-app is a 21st-centurygreen solution that allows us to update information on a daily basis," says Edmiston, who admits that this is a challenging time for theentire industry: "We are always respectful of ourcompetitors but try to be innovative," he says, noting the incredible experiences that are possibleon board a super yacht. Bespoke charter experiencessuch as reunions, wellbeing retreats, cuisine by Michelin-starred chefs, marine exploration as wellas family-oriented vacations with experts on board,to teach the kids to sail for example. The 2012 Bucket was Edmiston's second visit to theisland, but I bet he'll be back again soon as he develops his job promoting the Edmiston brand. "I love it here," he says about Saint Barth. "It has aEuropean flavor, but is truly Caribbean, isn't it?"Flexing his muscles for the Bucket, Edmiston looked perfectly at home. He has brought his expertise in the racing world to the island alreadyand is thinking of a "pop up" Edmiston office for afew months a year. "I could look after our clients'interests here," he says, with a twinkle in those blueeyes.n

La saison 2012/2013 amène Zupan dans les Caraïbes aux commandes d’un petit navire, le « Tere Moana » (appelé

précedemment « le Levant ») dont les 45 suites ont une capacité de90 hôtes. “Tous les espaces, y compris les cabines, ont été rénovés et

redécorés” souligne le capitaine. Le nouveau Tere Moana fera haltepour la première fois à Saint Barth lors d’un voyage inaugural

comprenant les visites de Saint Martin, Tortola, Jost van Dyke,Virgin Gorda, St Kitts et Nevis ainsi que Les Saintes.

De retour dans les îles“Je suis ravi de revenir aux Antilles après plus de 20 ans et de jeter

l ’ancre à Saint Barth pour la première fois,” déclare Zupan. “ La silhouette du Moana évoque au premier coup d’œil une élégance

distinctive. À bord, l ’ambiance est intime et le service cinq étoiles, digned’un yacht de croisière de première classe.” Le Moana est surtout

adepte des destinations ensoleillées et s’enquiert à rendre les voyagesuniques en explorant les ports cachés. “Après 37 ans en mer, je suis

Launching a new shipThe 2012/2013 season brings Zupan to the Caribbean as captainaboard another small ship, the Tere Moana (formerly Le Levant),which hosts a maximum of 90 guests in 45 staterooms. “All publicspaces including the guest cabins have been refurbished and redesigned,” explains Zupan, describing the Tere Moana,whoseinaugural cruise brought him to Saint Barth for the first time onan itinerary that also includes stops at St. Martin, Tortola,Jost van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, St Kitts & Nevis, and Les Saintes.

Back in the Islands“I am so happy to return to the Caribbean after more than 20 yearsand drop anchor in Saint Barth for the first time,” Zupan says. “The first sight of the Moana’s silhouette strikes you with a distinctive elegance. The ship offers an intimate ambiance aboard afirst-class cruising a yacht with five-star service.” The Moana specializes in warm-weather destinations with an emphasis on delivering unique voyages and exploring hidden ports.

Né à Athènes, en Grèce, le photographe Alexis Andrews est un véritable globe-trotteur. A l’âge de quatre ans,il passe l’été en famille dans les îles grecques sur un vieux caïque de pêche et de contrebande. Il devient dès

un catamaran de 8.5 mètres pour “chercher l’ aventure là où elle se trouve”. Et il y est resté. “Je préférais lavoile,” dit-il de son expérience londonienne. Le lendemain de son retour à Antigua, le sac à dos bourré

d’appareils photo, on lui propose de photographier un yacht à moteur énorme pour l ’époque.

“Il mesurait 25 mètres, explique Andrews. C’était intimidant mais je m’en suis bien sorti.Puis j’ai décidé de finir la saison pour gagner assez d’argent avant de voguer vers le Brésil... Une saison après

l ’autre, cela fait aujourd’hui 26 ans !!! ” Devenu l’un des organisateurs des Voiles de Saint Barth, il réalise unfilm sur les vieux voiliers antillais traditionnels qui pour lui, sont en voie de disparition. Son œil acéré de

photographe met en lumière aussi bien les vieilles chaloupes et les goélettes qui illustrent ses ouvrages, que lesyachts luxueux. Son secret ? “Chercher le spécifique dans chaque sujet” déclare Andrews, un îlien authentique

dont la vision personnelle de la Caraïbe se déploît sous le focal de son objectif. n

Born in Athens, Greece, photographer Alexis Andrews is an international wayfarer. Since the age of four,when his family spent a summer sailing around the Greek islands on an old fishing/smuggling caique, he hasbeen in love with boats, and fascinated by the age-old process of wood and canvas powered by the wind. His current home is the Caribbean island of Antigua, where he arrived in 1983 as a deckhand on a yacht forSailing Week. To confirm his nautical career, Andrews decided to go back to the UK, get his captain’s license,and return as a charter skipper. ”I went to night school for the license (it was free) and did photography by day(it paid well),” he quips. But after working in London in fashion and advertising photography, Andrews sailedback to Antigua in 1985 on a 28’ catamaran, “looking for adventure in all the right places,” he contends, andhas lived there since. “I wanted to go sailing instead,” he says of his life in London. With cameras in his backpack, within one day of arrival in Antigua he was offered a job to shoot a motor yacht, “huge in those days, all of 25m,” Andrews notes.

“It was very daunting but I pulled it off. And decided to stay the season and make some cash to sail on to Brazil...one season led to another, now its 26 years!!!” One of the organizers of the West Indies Regatta inSaint Barth, he is making a film about the classic West Indian wooden sailing boats, a Caribbean tradition hefears is on the verge of extinction. His books on these old sloops and schooners illustrate his keen eye every bitas much as his shots of luxury yachts. His secret? “Only to search for something special in every subject,” says Andrews, a true islander whose lens captures his personal vision of the Caribbean.n

L’œil marin“J’avais toujours mon appareil sur moi, raconte Silken. Toutefois, j’ai vite appris qu’il fallait me concentrer soit sur la photo ou soit sur lavoile mais pas sur les deux en même temps.” Silken a connu sa part d’expériences insolites telle que celle qu’il décrit comme “la dérivevers le Venezuela,” alors qu’il photographiait la Grenada Classic Yacht Regatta il y a quelques années. “La course venait de se termineret un vent de plus de 20 nœuds soufflait sur une mer démontée. Je me trouvais sur un bateau d’environ 8 mètres lorsque les liaisons de directionont lâché ! La mer était si déchaînée que les autres ne nous voyaient plus quand nous descendions au fond d’un creux. Nous n’avions pasd’outils pour réparer la direction donc il fallait trouver d’autres moyens. Après plusieurs tentatives, j’ai réussi à improviser un système decordage pouvant être manipulé par deux personnes, l ’une de chaque côté, et nous sommes revenus au port en zigzaguant dans tous les sens.”

Un objectif voyageur Silken parcourt la Floride, les Bahamas et toute laCaraibe pour faire des photos de janvier à avril. Ilremonte ensuite la côte nord-est des Etats-Unis etvoyage en Méditerranée de juin à octobre. Pour lephotographe de la St Barth Bucket depuis 2007, “lacouleur de l ’eau et les paysages font de St Barth la toilede fond idéale pour y puiser des images spectaculaires.”Silken a ouvert une galerie de photos à Newport,Rhode Island afin d’y exposer sa collection d’imagescapturées en haute mer. n

An eye for sailing“I always had my camera with me,” says Silken, “but quickly learned that I had tofocus on photography or sailing, and notboth at the same time.” Silken has had hisshare of unusual experiences including onehe calls "Drifting towards Venezuela," whileshooting the Grenada Classic Yacht Regattaa few years ago. “The race had just finishedand it was blowing over 20 knots with hugeseas. I was in about a 25' boat and the steeringlinkage broke! The seas were so tall that otherboats were not able to see us when we went

down into the trough of the waves. There were no tools to fix the steering, so we had to find another way to repair it. After a fewfailed repairs, I was finally able to rig a rope system and, with two people on opposite sides, we directed the boat in a wild zigzagroute back to the harbor.”

A lens for all seasonsSilken usually travels to Florida, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean to shoot from January through April, then along thenortheastern coast of the United States, as well as trips to the Mediterranean, in June through October. He has been photographingthe St Barth Bucket since 2007: “The color of the water and the scenery makes St. Barth the perfect location for creating dramaticimages,” says Silken, who has opened a photography gallery in Newport, RI, to showcase his collection of images taken on the highseas.n

de passionnés Locaux s’affrontaient du 18 au

20 novembre 2011 pour La quatrième édition

de La saint barth cata cup. organisée par

coLLaboration avec Le centre nautique de

saint-barthéLemy, cette régate permet aux

champions de renommée mondiaLe de profiter

de conditions d’automne superbes dans La

baie de st jean.

Il s’agissait en fait d’une bataille entre deux titans, Mischa Heemskerk, hollandais et vice-champion du monde, et John Casey, le champion nord-américain revenu défendre

son titre. Sous le soleil tropical et des vents légers de 10 à 15 noeuds (la troisième journée fut annulée faute de

vent), Heemskerk et son co-équipier Eduard Zanen sur leur catamaran Cirrus R avaient clairement l’avantage.

“Je cours en moyenne 120 jours par an,” explique Heemskerk. “La F18 est ma classe préférée. Il y a plusieurs modèles, chacun dotéd’une identité propre, mais ils participent tous aux mêmes courses.”

Casey et Dalton Tebo, vainqueurs en 2010, sont arrivésdeuxième en 2011. “John fera tout pour empêcher Mischa de

gagner encore en 2012, mais il doit se méfier de la concurrence, il ya de redoutables adversaires parmi les inscrits,” avertit Vincent

Jordil, l’un des organisateurs de la course.

Coup d’œil vers l’avenir

Daren Bundock, à la barre d’Oracle USA pour la Couped’Amérique, est un prétendant potentiel. “Il regrettait d’être

absent en 2011, mais a demandé à s’inscrire lepremier en 2012. Nous avons répondu OUI!!”

“Nous espérons accueillir de nouveaux participants du Brésil, d’Argentine, de Russie et d’Angleterre,”

ajoute Jordil, même si les inscriptions atteignent déjà la limitede 50 voiliers. “La Saint Barth Cata Cup est

devenue un rendez-vous important pour la classe F18. La réussitedépasse de loin nos espérances dès la première édition.” n

The real story was the battle of two titans, Mischa Heemskerk,world vice-champion from Holland, and John Casey, the NorthAmerican champ who had returned to defend his title. Racingunder the tropical sun, with light winds of 10 to 15 knots (the third day of racing cancelled: lack of wind), Heemskerkand teammate Eduard Zanen aboard their Cirrus R catamaran clearly had the advantage. “I average 120 racing days a year,” Heemskerk explains. “F18 is my favoriteclass, there are different models, each with their own identity,yet they still race against each other.” Casey, sailing with Dalton Tebo, the winning team in 2010,came in second in 2011. “I think that John will do everythinghe can not to let Mischa win again like that in 2012, but he hasto be very careful of the competition, there are some really bigguns coming,” says Vincent Jordil, one of the race organizers.

A look to the futureA possible contender is Daren Bundock, helmsman of OracleUSA for the America's Cup. “He was sorry he couldn’t be herein 2011, but asked if he could be the first to sign up for 2012. We told him YES,” Jordil adds. Even though the race has reached its maximum size of 50 boats, Jordil notes: “We hopeto have new nations represented, such as Brazil, Argentina,Russia, and England. The Saint Barth Cata Cup has become a very important event for the F18 class. Its success is wayabove our expectations since the first edition of the race.”n

“Nous avons failli rattraper Phaedo,” dit Mark Del Giudice,l’un des organisateurs, à bord de Hanuman.

“Mais il s’est envolé. Phaedo est un vrai phénomène sous levent”. Ross Kleiman, skipper de Symmetry,

un autre voilier rapide qui visite l’île souvent, déclare : « Nous adorons St Barth. C’est fabuleux pour la voile.

Nous participons souvent à la Bucket mais c’était notre première New Year’s Eve Regatta. La course était parfaite etnous reviendrons pour la Bucket. Arrivés troisième en 2011,

nous devons défendre notre place sur le podium.”

Moins nombreux mais heureux

Seuls dix voiliers ont complété la 17ème édition de la régate. “La météo est imprévisible,” note Del Giudice.

“Les voiliers locaux participent toujours, mais il manquaitcertains gros voiliers qui viennent pour les fêtes.

Personne ne veut s’engager avant de consulter la météo depeur d’exposer leurs bateaux à de trop mauvaises conditions

climatiques.” Le temps était variable, alternant soleil,nuages et parfois averses, alors que les voiliers

contournaient l’île dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d’unemontre, poussés par des vents moyens de 20 nœuds. “Le temps était devenu parfait une fois l ’averse passée,”

ajoute Del Giudice. “Le but de cette course est de promouvoirla voile et tous sont les bienvenus.” n

“We almost caught Phaedo,” says Mark Del Giudice, oneof the race organizers, sailing aboard Hanuman. “But they

took off. Phaedo is a real downwind machine.” Symmetry, also among the fastest boats, is a frequent

visitor to the island. “We love Saint Barth, it’s a great placeto sail,” says Symmetry skipper Ross Kleiman.

“We have sailed in the Bucket numerous times but thiswas our first New Year’s Eve Regatta. It was a perfect race,and we’ll be back for the Bucket. We were third overall in

2011 and have to defend our position on the podium.”

Smaller but funOnly 10 boats completed this 17th annual edition of the

regatta. “You can’t predict the weather,” notes Del Giudice. “We had the same local boats as usual, but we were missing more of the bigger boats that come for the

holidays. Nobody likes to commit until they see the weather, as they don’t want to damage their boats

in bad conditions”. The weather was a mixed bag of sunand cloudy skies, with winds averaging 20 knots and occasional rain showers as the boats headed around

the island in a counter-clockwise direction. “The weatherwas perfect once the rain went through,” Del Giudice

adds. “The goal of this regatta is to promote sailing andeveryone is welcome to participate.”n

Une concurrence intenseAntoine Questel, champion natif de Saint Barth, organisait l’événement en

collaboration avec Arnaud Daniel et Lionel Motière. Classé 12ème mondial et3ème en France, Questel affrontait des adversaires redoutables sur son propre

terrain, à l’instar du français Antoine Albeau, 19 fois champion du monde ou del’hawaïen Kevin Pritchard, ancien champion mondial.

Sous un ciel ensoleillé et porté par des vents atteignant 29 noeuds, Antoine Albeau a prouvé sa carrure de champion mondial en gagnant cinq des six courses,

avant de remporter aisément la première place. Taty Frans de Bonnaire arrivaitdeuxième et Antoine Questel troisième, encouragé par des fans en délire sur la

plage.“Saint Barth est un bon spot d’entraînement d’hiver pour les européens et surtout pour le champion local Antoine Questel,” déclare Pritchard. “Il habite un

endroit rêvé où d’autres viendront peut-être s’entraîner avec lui dorénavant.” Pourquoi pas! n

Serious competitionSaint Barth’s native champion, Antoine Questel, was one of the organizers of theevent, along with Arnaud Daniel and Lionel Motière. Ranked 12th worldwide and third best in France, Questel faced some stiff competition on his home court, ranging from 19-time world champion, Antoine Albeau of France to the Hawaii-based Kevin Pritchard, a former world champion.

Under sunny skies, with winds gusting up to 29 knots, Albeau proved his world-champion prowess by winning five of the six races over three days, and easily securing the top spot. Second was Taty Frans from Bonnaire, and Antoine Questel placed third, much to the delight of his fans cheering on thebeach. “Saint Barth is a good wintertime place for the Europeans to train, and especially for local champion Antoine Questel,” says Pritchard. “He lives in a perfectspot for training, and maybe now more people will come here to train with him.” And why not!n

A bigger BucketThe demand is overwhelming, everyone with a sailboat over 100’ wants to get in on the action. So with a record number

of 47 boats heading toward the starting line, the Bucket committee made an eleventh-hour decision to add Les Mademoiselles des Mers, in addition to the three existing classes. Parsifal III took top honors in Les Grand Dames

des Mers, it was Lady B for Les Mademoiselles, Mari-Cha III the fastest of Les Gazelles des Mers, and the overall winner of the race, the 42-meter Holland Jachtbouw-built yacht, This Is Us, topping Les Elegantes des Mers. A Bucketprologue saw the four magnificent J-boats racing against each other, with Endeavour edging out Hanuman, Ranger, and

Velsheda for the top spot.

residence near the Catholic Church in Lorient. In spite of the rainy start, an injured sailor,torn sails, and the largest boat in the fleet—the 67-meter Hetairos—out of the race after

hitting some rocks, the 2012 Bucket once again turned the Port of Gustavia into the center of the yachting universe.n

A successful businessman, George David is also a talented sailor, completing his hat trick of three consecutive wins at Les Voiles de Saint Barthin April 2012. His Rambler 90 reigned in the maxi class, posting four wins during the week. His former boat, Rambler 100, a high-tech

mono-hull built to break ocean records, capsized in dramatic fashion during the 2011 Fastnet race when the keel snapped off. Fortunately Lloyd Thornburg’s catamaran Phaedo—which is based in St Barth and also races in Les Voiles—was nearby at the time

and the crew was able to rescue David and his sailors.

A great regatta“This is a great regatta for a bunch of reasons,” says David about Les Voiles de Saint Barth. “It’s a beautiful island, and it’s a vertical island so it’sscenic to sail around, and you can get some very complicated courses.” With a fleet of almost 60 boats in six classes, this regatta has come a longway since it first set sail in 2010 with 28 boats on the starting line. Now with 800 sailors from around the world as part of the action, Les Voiles

de Saint Barth has become the place to be in early April, with a great mix of local boats, maxis, classics, and IRC52.

Une belle régate“C’est une belle régate pour des tas de raisons,” explique David en parlant des Voiles de Saint Barth. “L’île est belle et elle est verticale. Aussi, les paysages vus de l ’eau sont t-ils magnifiques. En outre, le tracé peut parfois s’avérer très complexe.” Comptant près de 60 voiliers répartis sur 6 classes, cette régate a beaucoup évolué depuis la première édition de 2010, lorsque 28 bateaux s’alignaient sur la ligne de départ. Réunissant aujourd’hui 800 marins du monde entier, Les Voiles de Saint Barth est devenu le rendez-vous incontournable du début avril, mélangeant voiliers locaux, maxis, classiques et IRC52.

Vous êtes le Partenaire Principal des Voiles de Saint Barth depuissa première édition en 2010. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d’en devenirle sponsor ? Il y a deux ans, François Tolède, l'organisateur des Voiles de SaintBarth m’ a convaincu de devenir l’un des pionniers à s'impliquerdans ce nouveau défi. La première éditionressemblait alors à un beau bébé qui aujourd'hui a grandi, est en bonne santé et apris du poids. À l’époque, deux cents marinsparmi lesquels se trouvaient les meilleursskippeurs du monde avaient relevé le défi.L’île était devenue le rendez-vous des plusbeaux voiliers.

Pratiquez-vous vous-même la voile? Je m’y implique en tant que Partenaire Principal,mais je ne la pratique pas, contrairement àla course automobile. Je cours régulièrementavec des voitures historiques, des "classicscars" et je suis sponsor du Mans Classic.Mon implication touche également d’autressports tels que le tennis, le polo, le golf... Lessportifs de haut niveau deviennent des partenaires d’exception en portant les montresRichard Mille durant les compétitions. C'est ce qui m'a permis dedévelopper des produits qui ont été confrontés à la réalité du terrain.

Vous avez dédié à la régate une montre de plongée en titane, la RM028 “Les Voiles de St Barth”. Pourquoi ? Je souhaitais célébrer cet évènement en créant une montre de plongée.Ce n'est pas tout à fait une montre nautique (son développementspécifique n'est pas encore abouti) mais je trouvais intéressant decombiner en un tout, un boîtier exceptionnel, un mouvement squeletté,et les éléments caractéristiques d’une montre de plongée.

Nous sommes à bord du Sojana, dont le propriétaire, Peter Harrison,est le parrain de la troisième édition des Voiles de Saint Barth. Quelest le point commun entre ce maxi-yacht et vos montres? La même approche philosophique. Tout comme pour les montresRichard Mille, le Sojana allie une technicité extrême, obtenue grâceà une R&D poussée et un esthétisme évident. You have been the principal sponsor of Les Voiles de Saint Barthsince its first edition in 2010. Why did you decide to play this role?Over two years ago, François Tolède, one of the organizers of LesVoiles de Saint Barth convinced me to be one of the pioneers involved

in this new venture. The first edition was likea cute baby that has now grown up, is in goodhealth, and has gained weight. At that time,200 sailors, including some of the best skippersin the world, responded to the challenge. Theisland has become the meeting point for themost beautiful sailboats.

Are you also a sailor?I am involved in this regatta as its principalsponsor, but I am not really a sailor. On theother hand, I really enjoy racing automobiles.I regularly race classic cars, and am a sponsorof the Le Mans Classic in France. I am alsoinvolved with other sports such as tennis,polo, golf… High-level athletes representsome of our most exceptional partners bywearing Richard Mille watches during competitions. This has allowed me to develop

products that meet the realities and challenges of practical experience.

You designed a titanium diving watch for the regatta, the RM 028Les Voiles de St Barth. Why?I wanted to celebrate this event by creating a diving watch. It is notcompletely a nautical watch (its scientific development is not yetcomplete), but I found it interesting to combine an exceptional case,an extremely thin movement, and the elements characteristic of adiving watch.

We are aboard Sojana, whose owner Peter Harrison is the patron ofthe third edition of Les Voiles de Saint Barth. What does this maxiyacht have in common with your watches?The same philosophical approach: Just like Richard Mille watches,Sojana blends extreme technical prowess with elegance and high-level R&D, along with its beautiful lines. I pay a lot of attentionto this aesthetic/technical fusion, where one continually enhancesthe other.

pour des raisons de sécurité. “Chaque classe sera limitée à 15 voiliers car chacun d’entre eux cherche à

remporter la victoire” explique Annelisa Gee. “Nousmettrons particulièrement en valeur les Classiques car

les goélettes occupent une place importante dans l ’histoire de Saint Barth.” n

KEEPING La quatrième édition de cette régate informelle réunissait du 4 au 6 mai 2012 les goélettes Scaramouche (connue commeQueen Of The Flee) et Alexander Hamilton, ainsi quequelques chaloupes telles qu’Ocean nomad, Summer Cloud,Savvy, Tradition et Genesis. La météo n’était certainement pasde la partie. Une pluie abondante et un vent faible qui rendaitimpossible toute compétition sérieuse, ne réussirent pas à entamer l'humeur des marins : “C'est bien plus que de la voile,c'est de la camaraderie,” déclare Randolph Maynard à bord deGenesis. “J'aime ces régates un peu brut, amicales et pas trop professionnelles. On apprend vite à manier ces voiliers si particuliers et tout est une question de timing. Rien n'est électrique,toutes les voiles se hissent à la main.”

Tout le monde a promis de revenir pour la cinquième éditionde la régate en mai 2013. Les voiles gonflées par plus de vent,ces navires offrent un beau spectacle qui vise à promouvoir et àencourager l'esprit de la voile traditionnelle dans la Caraïbe. n

The fourth edition of this informal regatta took place May 4-6,2012 with schooners Scaramouche, dubbed Queen Of TheFleet, and Alexander Hamilton, plus a handful of sloops, including Ocean Nomad, Summer Cloud, Savvy, Tradition, andGenesis. The weather certainly did not cooperate. With a lot ofrain yet very little wind, any real racing was not possible, butthe spirit of the sailors was not dampened. “It’s more than justthe sailing, it’s the camaraderie,” says Randolph Maynard, whosails aboard Genesis. “I like this kind of raw, not too professional, friendly regatta. You learn the skills to sail theseboats quickly, and timing is everything. Nothing is electric, allthe sails are raised by hand.”

Everyone has promised to come back for the fifth edition ofthe regatta in May 2013. With more wind in their sails, thesetraditional boats can put on quite a show as they promote andencourage the spirit of traditional sailing in the Caribbean.n

For Morvan it was a great win, after several unsuccessful attempts in past editions of the race. “The arrivalin Saint Barth is always a special experience, especially when it’s on a Sunday," he says. "And when you arethe winners, it’s even more magical.” Morvan and Dalin took the lead as early as May 3, having set sailfrom Concarneau, France, on April 21. Their closest competitors, Erwan Tabarly and Eric Peron aboardNacarat, led in the early days of the race but could not keep up the pace set by Cercle Vert, and finishedsecond at 5:10pm. Third place went to Jeanne Grégoire and Gérald Veniard aboard Banque Populaire, narrowly beating Paul Meilhat and Fabien Delahaye aboard Skipper Macif, by just 96 seconds in quite aspectacular finish.

Having celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012, as the race takes place every other year, the Transat AG2Rcaptures the imagination of the local public in Saint Barth. They line the docks and head out to sea to welcome the heroes of this physically and mentally challenging event. The perfect coda to more than threeweeks at sea!n
