THE LADIES TRY OUT DAVID FONG’S IN OCTOBER

Photo submitted by Fran Stade

On Tuesday, October 22, several Southern Cruzer ladies

braved the endless construction and made their way

across the river to David Fong’s in Bloomington. Since the

time for their next gathering in November falls at the same

time as Thanksgiving, they are moving the date to Tues-

day, December 10, 5 p.m., at Casper’s Cherokee of Ea-

gan. The address is 4625 Nicols Road in Eagan.

(Southwest corner of Nicols Road and Cliff Road.)

Alright, already, enough with this snow stuff before the month of October is even half over! I got too much to do

outside, and my snow blower is still in storage in my shed in the backyard. I ordered a new riding mower to replace

my old one which has given me many years of good service, and it won’t be delivered until October 19. One thing

I’m looking forward to is that the new one will have an electric start! Considering my dad started me off in my mow-

ing career with an old push mower, this is a huge improvement! Looking back to that old push mower, I remember

my dad finally got modern and bought a gas engine job, but it was the type where you had to wrap the starter rope

around the pulley and pull hard. If it didn’t start, you had to start all over with the wrapping thing. We’ve come a

long way. One thing I can say about that push mower is that it sure built character! (and muscles)

As I am working on this column, we are back in my hometown, Mar-

quette, Michigan, visiting my mother one more time before the snow

flies, and when the snow flies in this area, it flies! On Monday last, we

were in Duluth at the Comfort Suites Hotel right next to the lift bridge in

Canal Park watching the might of Lake Superior during a raging storm.

On Tuesday morning, the storm had subsided a bit and I was able to

get out to see the results of the carnage, confirming the fact that you

respect the big lake and what it can do in a very short time. When I was

a kid and not knowing much better, some friends and I would go down

to Lake Superior to dodge the huge waves, a stunt many others have

tried over the years and lost their lives. In retrospect, I like to think that

because we were local kids growing up on the big lake, we had the ex-

perience and timing to pull this off, but it could also be a case of false

bravado on our part. There is a new saying out: “The old Gales of No-

vember is now the new Gales of October.” Just wondering if all this is

part of global warming.

If you go to the next page to read the meeting minutes, you will see

that the meeting was a busy one! I had to use some creative writing to

get all the business conducted on a single page, but I’m sure I captured

all that went on. In a nutshell, three changes to the club bylaws were

voted on and passed. The $10,000 allocated from TSS profits was dis-

cussed. I think a good decision was made to give an equal part of the

money to the 5 worthwhile charities submitted, leaving everyone a winner! And lastly, the annual election of offic-

ers was held. We welcome Steve Brehm as the new Vice President of our club, with all the rest of the officers re-

maining as is. Also, as noted in the minutes, the term for Southern Cruzers officers is now two years.

Fast forward. (I use that term quite a bit. Don’t I?) We are now back home. During our absence, I see that quite a

few leaves have fallen, giving me a chance to try out that new mower mentioned earlier. The leaves were still

beautiful back in Michigan. Because of all the hardwoods, there were reds, yellows, and oranges, about the same

as you see on the North Shore. Now that the car show and cruising season is over, I have to find other things to fill

up these pages in the months to come. As I request every year, if you get ambitious and plan to do some projects

on your ride, let me know, and I’ll come over and get some photos of whatever you’re doing. Otherwise, I hope to

see you out there, somewhere! DB

Pledge of Allegiance was observed. Thirty-nine members were in attendance.

Secretary’s report: A motion was made by Bill Nelson and seconded by Ken Fortman to accept the minutes of

the September 2019 meeting as printed in the Cruz News. The motion passed.

Treasurer’s report: Dick Lidbom read the treasurer’s report. Ron (Eagan) Anderson made a motion to approve

the report. The motion was seconded by Ron Willson, and the motion passed. A call for bills was made. Tim

Hanna submitted a bill for $300.00 for the TSS color guard which was included in the TSS budget and didn’t need

approval. $50.00 in membership was turned over to the treasury.

Membership Chairperson: Jim Neher reported that club membership is 97 (171 total). The club welcomes new

member, Bill Larson from Savage. Bill was in attendance at our meeting.

Events: Anita Brown reported that the Ladies’ Night Out event will be Tuesday, October 22, at David Fong’s in

Bloomington. Tim Hanna reported that due to time considerations, the fall boat cruise has been cancelled. In-

stead, a holiday brunch event has been scheduled for Sunday, December 1, 11 a.m., at the Wilds in Prior Lake.

Old Business: Votes were taken on the changes to the club bylaws which were submitted at last month’s meeting,

and all three changes passed. They include: A club member will now be able to win the “Cruzer of the Year”

award more than once; in case of the dissolving of the club, all club money will go to charity; The term of officers

has gone from one year to two years. Tim Hanna reported that he will make these changes to the bylaws, and

post them on the website.

New Business: Jack Keenan reported that he sent out 8 hard copies of the last Cruz News. Tim Hanna reported

that Cushy, our website server recommends taking out a program to secure our two websites. The cost for this

would be $140.00 per website a year. Ed Sanders made a motion to pay $280.00 for a one year protection. Karen

Keenan seconded the motion, and the motion passed.

TSS Business: Five charities were submitted and were eligible to be voted on to receive part of the $10,000 allo-

cated from the TSS profits from 2019. They include:

Dakota County Technical College, (Autobody & Mechanics) submitted by Jim Neher.

Eagan Open Door Pantry, submitted by Ron Willson

Honoring All Vets, submitted by Ron (Richfield) Anderson

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, submitted by Roger Gilb

The Sheridan Story, submitted by Kelly Gulbranson from Apple Ford

Representatives of the charities were asked to give a quick synopsis of what their charity did for the community.

Jason Viana spoke on the Open Door Pantry; Don Belkengren spoke about Honoring All Vets; Nate & Stephanie

Miller explained the Sleep in Heavenly Peace program; and Tim Hanna, The Sheridan Story. Joy Hanna made a

motion that the club give all 5 charities $2,000.00 apiece, superseding the motion made and passed at the last

meeting. Jack Keenan seconded the motion, and the motion passed. Jerry Forness made a motion to recind his

motion made at the last meeting concerning the allotment of the $10,000.00. Bill Nelson seconded the motion,

and the motion passed.

The annual election of officers was held. All officers with the exception of Vice President ran un-opposed. Jack

Keenan decided not to run this year, and Steve Brehm has volunteered to take his place. A vote was taken to

elect all officers by a white ballot vote for two years as specified by the latest change in the club bylaws, and it

passed.

The next meeting will be at Apple Valley Ford in Apple Valley on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at 7 p.m. A

motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Joy Hanna; seconded by Ron (Eagan) Anderson; and the motion

carried. The meeting was adjourned.

YOUR SPECIAL DAY!

BIRTHDAYS

SOUTHERN CRUZER TO DO LIST

NOVEMBER: If needed, an officer election will be held. A distribution of TSS profits vote will be held.

Editor’s note: Because we had such a productive meeting in October, everything on the November to do list has

been done. You are welcome to come to our last meeting for the year on November 20 to hang out with all the

nice folks who show up to enjoy our bad jokes and Ed Sander’s trivia questions.

DECEMBER: Because of the holidays, there is no meeting this month. The editor and staff of the Cruz News

wish all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CHANGES TO THE CLUB BYLAWS Just like in life, occasionally we have to make some small changes in our routine to keep things running smoothly,

and the club did just that at our last meeting in October. Three changes to the bylaws were submitted, and the

attending members voted to accept all three changes. The first change is to allow a club member to receive the

“Cruzer of the Year” award more than once. The second is in case the club is dissolved, all money in the treasury

will go to charities voted on by the membership. The third change is to make the term of office for all board mem-

bers two years. Webmaster Tim Hanna will be posting these changes to the bylaws.

AN ICY FAREWELL!

Some of the car guys store their cars down in Farmington. It is always arranged ahead of time which day this will

happen in order to get the cars all in at the same time and spaced just so in the barn. This year happened to be

the same day it was raining & snowing in early October. I tagged along to get a couple of photos and caught Ron

Willson as he was getting ready to put his ‘57 Chevy away.

Photos by the editor

RON (RICHFIELD) ANDERSON’S CLOTHES DRIVE

Ron Willson leads the group in Ice on the front of the car

At the October club meeting Ron Anderson was collect-

ing clothes for the needy. Ron reports that he collected

one and a half truck loads. All of the clothes have been

delivered to the Battered Women’s Shelter. Assisting

Ron was his friend, Boney Moronie. Ron said that she

didn’t do much. She just sat around looking cute! Staff

photographer, Rose Barclay, caught Ron, Noel John-

son, and Duane Barclay standing around trying to im-

press Boney.

$10,000.00 GOES TO FIVE WORTHWHILE CHARITIES

Because of the work and dedication of many Southern Cruzers, the 2019 Summer Spectacular was a success! At

the club meeting in October, it was decided to divide the $10,000.00 profit from the event into 5 equal parts with

$2,000.00 going to each of the submitted charities. A total of $119,000.00 has been given from our show over the

years to local charities. This is something we can all be proud of!

1. Dakota County Technical College: Two scholarships

2. Open Door Food Pantry, Eagan, MN

3. Honoring All Veterans Memorial, Richfield, MN

4. Sleep In Heavenly Peace, Burnsville, MN

5. The Sheridan Project, Fighting Child Hunger, Roseville, MN
