Fun FactsFun FactsFun Facts The first New Year’s Eve

festivities in 1904 consisted of

200,000 revelers attending an

all-day street festival and

late-night fireworks display. The

city banned fireworks in 1907, so

the owner of The New York Times

arranged to have a giant,

illuminated ball lowered at

midnight.

In 1904, the name “Times Square” was given to the

area to commemorate the official opening of the new

headquarters of The New York Times.

The first New Year’s Eve ball, built by a young

immigrant metalworker named Jacob Starr, was made

of iron and wood and adorned with 100 25-watt light

bulbs. It was five feet in diameter and weighed 700

pounds.

Fun FactsFun FactsFun Facts More than 15 million households in the United States

alone watch the Times Square ball drop on TV each

year.

The ball has been lit and lowered every year since

1907, except for 1942 and 1943 when the ceremony

was suspended due to the wartime “dimout” of lights

in New York City. Crowds still gathered in Times

Square during those years and greeted the New Year

with a minute of silence followed by chimes ringing

out from sound trucks at the base of the tower,

reminiscent of the earlier celebrations at Trinity

Church where crowds would gather to “ring out the

old” and “ring in the new.”

In Times Square, more than a ton of confetti drops as

the New Year is officially rung in.

The Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is capable of

creating a palette of more than 16 million vibrant

colors.

Page 4: Happy New Year!Happy New Year! Archiveswichita.kumc.edu/Documents/wichita/jhawktalk/12_28_11.pdf · How long have you worked at your job? I have held my position for many years, although

Page 4

How long have you worked at your job? I have held my position for many years, although the reason for my position has

changed along the way and the history is a little unclear. It is said that I started my

job when the ancient Egyptians and Greeks included a baby in their spring New

Year celebrations to signify the rebirth of the crop. Most recently, the Americans

adopted me from the Germans, who also had been using me as a symbol. Thanks

to the media, my position was made popular in 1908, when the “Saturday Evening

Post” featured me on their cover, which they continued to do through 1943.

I’m not bragging, but, across the world, women vie to have their children

represent me by attempting to be the first to deliver, either naturally or by C-

section, the first child born in the New Year in their community.

What are your job responsibilities and what do you like most about your

job? I symbolize the “birth” of the next year, so I generally perform some sort of

ceremonial duty, including chronicling the year’s events or presiding over the year

as a symbol. Although my duties are limited to appearances for a short time at the

beginning of each year, at which time I must appear as an infant, the myth most

associated with me required that I quickly age until I am elderly, like “Father Time,”

with whom I am most closely associated. I must renew my infant-like appearance

by the time the next New Year comes along and, like Santa Claus, I have to put on

a little weight to appear to keep my chubby appearance.

If you’ve taken the StrengthsFinder assessment and are willing to share your top 5 strengths, please tell us what they are and briefly share how

you use them in your job. My 5 Strengths are Futuristic, Connectedness, Significance, Self-Assurance, and

Positivity.

My job is to serve as the symbol to ring in the New Year and bring people

together. It’s pretty special that I represent that, in the New Year especially, we all

have the ability to start fresh, connect with one another, and change lives for a

bright future. I am a fairly important symbol and it’s not really the New Year

celebration without me, so I often like to dress up in a top hat and sash so that

people recognize me and the year I represent.

Fun FactFun FactFun Fact Each year, Waterford replaces approximately 288

of the 2,668 custom-made triangle crystals on the

ball with ones of a new theme. For Times Square

2012, the theme is “Let There Be Friendship”

illustrating people holding hands around the world.

The ball has 288 crystals of each past design,

including “Let There Be Love,” “Let There Be

Friendship,” “Let There Be Courage,” “Let There

Be Joy,” and 960 crystals of the original “Let There

Be Light.”

Fun FactsFun FactsFun Facts Designed to withstand high winds, precipitation, and

temperature fluctuation, the crystals, which range in

size from 4 ¾ inches to 5 ¾ inches, are affixed to

the clear acrylic outer skin of the ball via a single bolt

and nut.

In 2010, Waterford introduced the Celtic knot, an

interlocking ribbon pattern meant to evoke the

yellow ribbons used to welcome home soldiers and

red ribbons used to raise AIDS awareness, as the

new design for the crystals on the ball.
