FROM THE PRINCIPAL ...
What a hectic beginning of the week we have all had! I have never seen our staff work so hard and fast to prepare everything for our students in just one day. What an amazing team they are!
Due to the NSW stay at home orders, schools will remain open and providing minimal supervision to students whose parents/carers are categorised as an essential worker or if after discussion with your child’s teacher, learning from home is not possible. Minimal supervision allows us to have a combined maximum of 5 staff on site only. Normal lessons, routines or activities will not be taking place. Students will be supervised to complete the single unit of work from the learning from home resource. Children are highly susceptible to the COVID-19 Delta strain. We want to keep your children and our community safe and respectfully advise that this is best done by learning from home wherever possible I want to thank all of our families for your support during this time. Please get in touch with your child’s teacher to discuss any additional needs for your child or family to support you to learn from home. Thank you for your support – we’re all in this together. 1/2K - MRS CECCATO
We have been working on our addition and subtraction skills. In the pictures below, we were focusing on subtraction. We started by solving word problems by working out whether the question was requiring us to add or subtract. We looked at the language and focused on the words like ‘gave away’, ‘lost’, ‘how many left’ and ‘less’ etc. to identify the operation required. Then we looked at strategies we could use to find the answer, such as drawing a picture or diagram, using the inverse of addition, or counting backwards. We checked our answers to ensure they made sense and we wrote the number sentence. We then had lots of fun writing our own subtraction word problems and having a partner solve it. We have become so much better at identify subtraction problems. See more on the HPS Facebook page.
WAYS PARENTS CAN SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME
Split Strategy The Split Strategy is used to add larger numbers. It focuses on splitting the number into tens and ones. The tens are then added together followed by the ones. The remaining two numbers are added for the answer. This strategy focuses on using students knowledge of place value to quickly solve problems.
Friends of 10/ Bridge to 10 Strategy We first teach students their Friends of 10 or combinations to 10 like 7 + 3, 5 + 5, 9 + 1. It is important that students are able to use lots of different combinations to make numbers up to 10 because these skills are used in more complex strategies. The Bridge to 10 Strategy is a complex strategy which focuses on faster mental addition by breaking a number in to smaller parts in order to find combinations to 10 then adding the remaining part. For example; when solving 8 + 4 the 4 could be broken into 2 and 2. Then 8 + 2 make 10 so 2 more make 12.

5/6W - MRS WADSWORTH & MRS WORKMAN
MISS DOTTA - LST
This term in LST I have been working with Kindergarten and Stage One on literacy and numeracy. As a new teacher to the school, I enjoy this time as I get to meet the students and get to know them a bit better as a learner, more than I do seeing them in the playground. We have been focusing on fundamentals such as number and letter formation. We have also been working on more complex learning such as sentence writing, sounds and friends of 10, as well as addition and subtraction. To make these lessons we have together more interactive, we have been using materials such as playdough and games to encourage participation in learning and making learning fun. This is a teaching technique that I have found students enjoy and are able to retain what they have learnt as it is repeated throughout the game. Fingers crossed lockdown doesn’t make our time apart too long as I am excited to get back into LST lessons with my groups!
Stadium Challenge: 5/6W has been working on a Maths Challenge. We had to design a stadium that could seat 10 000 people. Students had to work out the area and perimeter of their stadium and draw a key and scale. It was a very challenging task as the students to transfer a lot of skills from different learning areas. Classic Book Project: Stage Three have been working on a project as part of their homework. They had to choose a classic book which was more than 20 years old, write a 600 word review about their book and present their information in a poster. We will be displaying their great work in the foyer at our School Production.
