HAMBRIGHT FAMILY NEWS Descendants of Colonel Frederick Hambright Summer 2009 ……Letter from the PRESIDENT Dear Family, Old Shiloh Cemetery has been the focus of our attention this past year. In December, Ron Dover, Carol Anne Weaver and I met with an attorney in Charlotte, NC to explore forming an association which would be a legal entity to attend to the cemetery. We learned that NC laws concerning cemeteries are very stringent and the cost of forming any association is simply too cost prohibitive. Perhaps many of you do not realize that Carol and Berley Crosby have (out of the kindness of their hearts) for the last several years been making a trip from Columbia, SC about 4 times a year to clear and mow the cemetery grounds. Even with help from local volunteers, each clean-up is an all day affair due to fallen tree debris and the size and layout of the cemetery. And it is very hard work! We do not know how long they will be able to make the trips and must plan for the day when someone else will take on the task or a company hired to do so. Restoration of the cemetery should not begin until at least some of the trees over the graves are removed. It is likely that we will need several thousand dollars to remove the trees, funds to restore the stones, grading and gravel of the road around the cemetery and possibly ongoing funds to simply maintain the grounds. As of last accounting, the family cemetery fund and the Shiloh Presbyterian Church cemetery fund together contain about $2,000-many thousands short of what is needed. If you have ideas for a fund raiser, please contact me. As you can see from this newsletter, there are several major events planned the week of the reunion. For the last few years, some attendees have met on the Saturday evening before the reunion to discuss genealogy. We have a wonderful time catching up on news and genealogy accomplished during the year. It has also become apparent that some Hambright descendants don’t know how they are descended from the Colonel. You may be able to trace your family line through the online databases kept by Marjorie Gossage and Rebecca Kahout. The sites are as follows: Descendats of Col. HAMBRIGHT BIBLE RESTORATION

A restoration of the Col. Frederick Hambright Bible is nearing completion. The Bible, which has been handed down through the Frederick Hambright, Jr. generation, is

now in the possession of Robert Hambright of Charlotte. ___________________________________ OLD SHILOH CEMETERY RESTORATION On Saturday, October 4, 2008 fifteen individuals met at the First Victory Inn in Kings Mountain to discuss the possibility of a total restoration of the Old Shiloh Cemetery, the burial site of Col. Frederick Hambright and many of our ancestors. Among the attendees were two members of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church of Grover, NC, Dr. Nancy Mugford, D. Min., and Joel Roundtree. Mr. Bill Wiley of Wiley Brothers Monuments of York, SC gave the presentation for the restoration. The vote to go forward for a total restoration was passed the next day at the 62nd Hambright Reunion. A committee of eight members was formed. It was decided that a number of trees had to be removed from the cemetery before the work could begin. The cost of repair and cleaning would depend on each individual tombstone requirement. Mr. Wiley quoted a figure of between $7000 and $8000 total, plus tree removal. Sadly, Bill Wiley died December 2008, soon after the decision was made. We are now back to the drawing board to find another qualified firm to take on the project. ___________________________________ Mary Dover Hambright and the Daughters of the American Revolution For those of you who are a member of the DAR, you should be aware that documentation on Mary Dover (second wife of Col. Hambright) is being researched. Hopefully her papers will render her eligible as Supplemental.

JUDGE EDWARD BUTLER AND THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION At our 62nd Reunion, we had a number of individuals who had not attended for some years. We were pleased to have Judge Edward F. Butler, Sr. of San Antionio, Texas with us again. As Secretary General of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, “Ed” was in the area to represent SAR as guest speaker at the Wreath Laying Ceremony of the 228th Anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. On Tuesday morning, October 7, as the G-G-G-Grandson of Col. Frederick Hambright, it was an honor and appropriate to the occasion that Ed chose to talk about Col. Hambright’s participation and contribution at the Battle of Kings Mountain. At the same ceremony, an other descendant, Eudora Anne Ratcliffe, presented a wreath representing the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century. Eudora qualifies for this organization as a descendant of William Goforth (Colony of Burlington, NJ 1600s) whose Great Grandson, Preston Goforth, was killed at the Battle at Kings Mountain. __________________________________________ A GIFT TO KEEP ON GIVING… The Old Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery, home of the graves Colonel Frederick Hambright and many of our ancestors is remarkable treasure to be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Lyman Draper’s KINGS MOUNTAIN AND ITS HEROS At the annual Over Mountain Men dinner, held at Antioch Baptist Church on Oct 7, a raffle was held auctioning a second edition of Lyman Draper’s, Kings Mountain and Its Heros. The beautiful ornate book with a blue and gold cover had belonged to Bonnie Mauney Summers, (author of the Col. Frederick Hambright Family). The book had been sold previously at an auction after the death on March 21, 2007 of Summer’s daughter, Virginia Summers Hinnant, of Kings Mountain. The lucky winner was an out of state bidder from Virginia. __________________________________________ GENEALOGY UPDATE Wow, what a fun year it has been researching the descendants of Frederick Hambright, Jr. The advent of the internet and easy access to information and people has also provided new information. One MAJOR DISCOVERY is that the Elizabeth Mannon who was married to Madison Hambright, is, in fact, Elizabeth Manning, daughter of Robert Manning and sister of Sarah “Sallie” Manning who married Jefferson Hambright, Madison’s brother! Thanks to Ms. Sharon Brown of Myersville, MD, who provided me with copies of Robert Manning’s will that names his son in law, Madison Hambright. It’s just amazing how many of our ancestors married into just a few families I’ve also been gathering information on our relatives who settled in the Casa, Arkansas and the McMinn, TN areas. Several hundred new descendants identified through marriage records, cemetery records, birth certificates, military records, obituaries, and some responses via email. Some folks have even provided some great stories. A hearty THANK YOU and WELCOME to the generous relatives who have provided this updated information. If you are interested in viewing this work in progress, it may be viewed on my Frederick Hambright Jr. Working file tree on Ancestry.com. If anyone would like to view this tree, let me know and I can send you an invitation via email that will allow you to view the tree. - Dodie Shaw

OUR VERY OWN KILLA FROM MANILLA! by Rebecca Kahout: The Hambright clan hasn’t been known for its athletic sports figures so when we heard a rumor that a Hambright was a famous boxer, we proceeded to research this mystery with anticipation! After making contact with family members in California we are pleased to learn the rumors were true! Indeed, there was a Vincent Manago Hambright ( b. July 17, 1906, d. Apr 20, 1946) who was born in Cabu City, Philippines. He was the son of John Benjamin Hambright (b.1878 - d. 1848) and Flavia Manago, the grandson of Henry Delray Hambright (b. 1851 – d. 1932) and Mary Emmaline Duncan, the great-grandson of John W. Hambright (b. 1805 - d. 1852) and Sarah Calloway, and the great-great-grandson of Col. Frederick and Sarah’s son, Benjamin Hambright (b. 1764- d. bef. 1844). Vincent’s father, John was in the US Navy and was stationed in the Philippines right after the turn of the century. He married a local woman named Flavia Manago and they had four children, Severine, Christina, Vincent and Remedios. It was Aug 1924 when Vincent left Manila, Philippines aboard the Empress of Russia ship and arrived in Seattle, Washington. Shortly after he arrived he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where he met and married Elizabeth Schad. They had two children, Vincent, Jr. and

Jacqueline Hambright. Our family connection, Nicole Apple, tells us that Elizabeth and her siblings were living with their grandparents, immigrants from Germany, and that Elizabeth’s grandfather was a composer. Cincinnati was ripe for opportunity for a young boxer and Vincent quickly made a name for himself. From 1926 to 1933, he was a champion welterweight boxer and fought with famous names like Tom LaRosa, Danny Millilo, Jimmy and Frankie Zanzoni, L. O. Mars, Maxey Koshover. The area was a melting pot before the Great Depression, while the city’s West End gave rise to a number of fine boxers of various heritage. He was joined there by Jewish, Italian, and German athletes who were all ready to make a name for themselves in the sports world. Our Vincent and his fellow boxers all fought in gyms there, along with those in Over-the-Rhine. Unfortunately, our story has a tragic ending. By 1946, Vincent was no longer boxing and had taken a position as a truck driver. While standing outside his home in April, he was shot in the back and killed.. The altercation was the result of a café argument with 24-year old veteran Arnold Spivey. He was buried in Cincinnati, Ohio, but the memory of The Killa’ from Manila lives on.

Vincent is on the front row, fourth soldier from the left and beside the soldier with the moustache.
