A LETTER FROM PRESIDENT JOAN TASOGLU

Sisters and Brothers,

I hope all of you had a wonderful summer, enjoying vacation time and the great outdoors. I know I

did. September proved to be a busy month for many members with extended weekend trips or for a few of our members it meant spending family time sending our children or grandchildren off to college.

The Lodge participated in two parades, the Sgt. John Basilone Parade in N.J. with about 16 members

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF ITALIAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

PASSED BY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Washington, D.C., Oct. 24, 2000 - The Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA) has commended the

U.S. House of Representatives today for passing, H.Res. 347,

the Italian American Heritage Month resolution.

"After centuries of building, defending, and increasing the quality of life in the United States,

Italian Americans are finally on their way to official acknowledgement of their many and

widespread contributions to our country and the world.

" OSIA National President Philip R. Boncore, Esq., remarked.

"This is a proud day for Italian Americans and should be for all Americans, who, without

the likes of such notable individuals as Antonio Meucci, the discoverer of voice transmission over

copper wire which led to the invention of the telephone, and Enrico Fermi, who split the atom,

might be living in a very different society."

In September, I delivered items donated from the LODGE July yard sale and

PET food I purchased, to the Islip Town Animal Shelter.

Just another one of the easy ways our Lodge can contribute

and spread good will to the surrounding community.

GARIBALDI-MEUCCI MUSEUM

Antonio Meucci was born on April 13, 1808. He was a prolific Italian inventor, engineer and practical chemist who is most known

for developing a voice communication apparatus he called the telettrofono. On June 11, 2002 the United States House of Representatives

and on September 9, 2003 the United States Senate passed resolutions acknowledging Meucci's work in the invention of the telephone.

My brothers and Sisters this is what our lodge is all about ---- preserving our Italian culture and heritage.

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is one of the jewels of the Order and we need to show our support for this historic site.

That is why the Museum brunch on November 1st is very

important. Eleven members of our lodge will be attending this

function. The price is $70 a person. A bus will be leaving

from the Brumidi Lodge at 8:30 A.M. on the day of the

function. The cost of the bus is $20.

After the brunch a reception will be held at the museum.

If you would like to go please see Carlo or Madeline after the next

lodge meeting on October 6th.

Brother Carlo will be doing a 10 minute cultural presentation on the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi at our next lodge meeting.

I’m really bad at measuring pasta,

If you and a dozen of your friends

want Spaghetti for dinner, come on over!!!

MANGIA

BROTHER PETE FICARRA SHARES HIS RECIPE

FOR SAUCE FROM FRESH GARDEN TOMATOES

Ingredients 10 pounds of home grown tomatoes 3 pounds of onion Salt, pepper, and fresh basil 1/4 cup Olive oil Cut tomatoes in chunks and into pot.

Cut onions into chunks and add to pot.

Cook on low to medium for 2-3 hours Pass through a food mill. Use just the juice and discard seeds and skin Cook for 1/2 hour and add salt, and pepper to taste.

Cook for another 1/2 hour. While sauce is finishing;

Cook pasta: 1 to 1 ½ pounds according to package directions. Shut off sauce and add 1/4 cup olive oil and fresh basil. Makes approximately 4 servings. Yumm, the Macaroni is cooking, and I am pouring a glass of wine…

How about some Long Island Wine to go with your Macaroni and Sauce; over 1 million people visited Long Island wineries last year. The wineries produce about 500,000 cases of wine each year.

Choosing the right Olive oil

Come scegliere il giusto olio d'oliva

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, highest smoke point, it tolerates high heat.

Extra Virgin High Quality is the highest grade of olive oil, unheated:

Use as CONDIMENT; SALAD, DRIZZLE, BREAD DIP,

Extra Virgin, but not top shelf use to BROWN, STIR FRY, or FRY with.

Do not buy OLIVE OIL in glass bottles.

Look for the harvest date, remember OLIVE OIL is not meant to age.

Olive Oil is good for about 2 years if kept in optimum conditions.

This looks like an interesting book to read:

HALLOWEEN IN ITALY

Although November 1st, All Saints Day,

is much more popular, Halloween, is

starting to catch on in Italy.

You will often see carved pumpkins, costumed kids running through the

piazzas and signs for Halloween themed parties at local

restaurants or clubs, making it safe to say Halloween has been adopted

into the Italian culture

In some parts of Italy, La Notte delle Streghe – The Night of

the Witches is celebrated.

So far Halloween in Italy remains relatively free of commercialism,

only time will tell.
