Week 8 Thursday 19 th March, 2020 Unfortunately, due to ongoing issues with COVID 19 virus I will start the newsletter with an update of the information I sent out on Tuesday. Highlighted areas indicate an update to that information. Thank you so much for the patience and understanding you have shown us as we try our best to manage this situation and keep our students as safe as possible. The NSW Department of Education is continuing to provide us with information to limit the impact of COVID- 19 in our schools. The latest advice can be found at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/school- safety/novel-coronavirus To increase safety, we wish to limit the number of people entering the school. Please do not accompany your children into the school unless it is absolutely necessary. Please try to wave them goodbye at the gate and do not enter unless you really need to see a staff member or have an appointment. Try and have them arrive as close to 9am as possible to limit the number of students from different classes and stages together in the playground. We understand there may be some kinder students or anxious students in other classes where you may need to come in. In the afternoon please meet students at the gate. We will walk classes to the gate. K-2 students will be walked to the gate near the office and years 3-6 students will be walked to the gate near the 2 story building. Students who go out the back gate should leave as they normally do. Parents are welcome to wait on the oval. Consequently, we are also ceasing the help of parent volunteers, except for Canteen helpers, until further notice. We have closed the bubblers as they are a significant risk. Can all students please bring a drink bottle to school. Students also need to remember to bring their hats as we are asking students to alternate between the COLA/Court yard and the oval so that stage groups are segregated as much as possible. Any student in contact with a confirmed case of COVID 19 will be excluded for 14 days. Any student in contact with a suspected case should not return to school until the outcome of the test is confirmed. School closure due to COVID-19 At present there are no known cases of COVID-19 in our school community. If someone is diagnosed, NSW Health will inform the school and we will have to close for at least a day. This could

happen at any time. In the event that we are told to close we will communicate via: • the SkoolBag app – please ensure you have downloaded the SkoolBag app and allow push notifications. This is available for Apple and Android devices. Search for SkoolBag and download the app, then set up an account and search for Gwandalan PS • Facebook

• the school website. COVID-19 requirements Any student who has been in close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19 must remain isolated for 14 days following that contact. If your child shows any of the symptoms – high temperature, cough, sore throat, breathing problems – please keep him or her at home. We have asked staff to do the same. If your child has a serious health condition that may make them more vulnerable to this virus you should be seeking advice from your doctor about their attendance at school. We are contacting some families who have children who may be in this category.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding with this currently changing situation.

Please try to be as relaxed about all this as possible in the interest of keeping stress levels to a minimum for students.

We provided a booklet with this information on Tuesday that you may find useful for your children. If you need another copy please contact the office.

Student Led Interviews It was great to see so many parents in the school last week for the interviews. I hope you found them worthwhile. Working Bee We now have these great seats on the oval for kids that just want to have a quiet chat. Big thank you to Iain, Bronwyn, Lionel, Tamika, Charlotte, Dean, Bill, Leonie, Michelle and Sandy for taking time out of your weekend to get these seats done for our students.

NAPLAN

Between Tuesday 12 May and Friday 22 May 2020, students at our school in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN online assessments

Students may be exempt from the NAPLAN tests if they:

• are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

• have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer after consultation with the school principal. To withdraw your child from NAPLAN, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with your child’s teacher if you need to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Any questions? Contact the NAPLAN team on 1300 119 556 or [email protected].

For further information about NAPLAN, visit the NESA website.

Wallarah Zone Swimming Congratulations to the wonderful Gwandalan Public School students who attended the Wallarah Zone Swimming Carnival at Mingara. We witnessed many PB times and some great spirit with students encouraging each other during the races. Thankyou Mrs Tindall who assisted at the start of the day and to all the parents and family members who took students. All students had fun and this is the most important aspect of such days. Congratulations Chelsea C who will represent Wallarah Zone at the Sydney North regional carnival after she finished second in the junior girl’s butterfly! Great work Chelsea.

Boots/ shin pads donation If you have any football or soccer boots that no longer fit please consider donating them to the school. I am trying to get a 'pool' of resources for children to use who may not play a sport and then get an opportunity to represent the school. It will save parents buying new boots or shin pads for a single event. Please leave them at the school office and I will collect them. School football socks School football socks are now available to purchase at our school office for $10.00 These should be worn when representing the school in sport. Our school representative socks are blue and white stripes. Regards Mr Vine (Sports Coordinator)

This week 1T have been engaged in a book study called Traction Man. Students have enjoyed the humour and ‘play on words’ throughout this text and we have been busy brainstorming our own action figures and using our imaginative thinking to come up with some interesting names and features for them. Students have begun designing and creating their own figures and here is an example of just a few. We are excited to create a comic strip about our new characters during writing lessons, with a focus on adding interesting verbs to our writing.

School Opal Card As part of our campaign against fare evasion, and our on-going commitment to provide the level of service needed to transport students to and from your school, Busways conducts regular checks of School Opal card.

All students must be in possession of a valid Opal card or pay a fare. Students in possession of an Opal card must also tap on/off with their card when boarding our buses. This is important, because the Opal data collected determines the level of service we are able to provide to your school. If students don’t tap on and off, the services will appear underutilised and may be considered for cancellation based on low passenger numbers.

To apply for a School Opal card or to report a lost or stolen card, go online to www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal-for-school-students/ Students who are ineligible for School Opal will need to purchase a Child/Youth Opal card or pay a fare to travel on our buses. Thank you in advance for your assistance and support.

Get involved in the School Banking program

Gwandalan is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2020 are:

o Terry Denton’s Activity Book o Mini Soccer Ball (size 2) o Treetop Stationary Set o Treetop Handball o Tomato Seed Kit o Magic Mist Drink Bottle o Emoji Wallet o Snakes & Ladders Game

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online

Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is Tuesday. Each week you need to hand your bank books to your teacher for collection.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

IMPORTANT CANTEEN NOTICE On Thursdays and Fridays

the canteen will only accept orders placed on

Flexischools

Due to the increased work load of having separate lunch times, the

canteen will not be accepting over the counter lunch orders on

Thursdays and Fridays.

Lunch orders will only be available by the Flexischools app.

Flexischools is an online cashless ordering system which streamlines

the processes in the canteen, allowing us to have lunches ready on

time.

Please see flyer attached or school website for information on how to

download the app. If you need assistance getting the app set up leave a

message at the office and we will get back to you.

If you are unable to use the online system for some reason and must

use the paper bag over the counter please order your child’s lunch on

a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Flexischools is the preferred ordering method every day.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in

these changing times.

Volunteers Always Appreciated Our Canteen relies on volunteers to function properly. If you or someone you know could spare an hour or so in the mornings it would be a great service to the school.

It’s easy work and very rewarding for both the volunteers and the children. If you don’t like to serve help is needed

with food preparation, as most of our menu is made fresh on the premises. Pop into the canteen or school
