The 2013 edition of the AmeliaBarons are chasing the same thingthat has eluded every Ameliasquad dating back to 1998: a win-ning season.

“We don’t have many numbers, but the kids are very focused ongetting a winning season,” headcoach Randy Hospelhorn said.“They’re very focused on thatgoal.”

Coming off of a 4-6 season, theBarons came close to accomplish-ing their goal in 2012, but nowwith a whiff of that possibility,Hospelhorn expects the seniorclass to lead the way and end thewinning drought.

“Jake Miller at running backand Cohen Canter on the O-lineand D-line are two seniors who

had a really good offseason andshould really step it up,”Hospelhorn said. “We have CarterHounshell, a junior, at middle line-backer and Sean Stewart and TJReed at defensive end. They wereall standouts last year and I expectgood things out of them this year.

“TJ Troxell ran the ball for uslast year at fullback and I’m

expecting a good season out ofhim.”

The leadership by committeethat Hospelhorn is hoping to getfrom his seniors will not onlycome from Miller and Canter, butalso fellow fourth years DonnieSellers, Gary Sunday, LoganHughes, Nathan Seebohm, NickPangallo and Randy Hartley.

Similar to the way that mostClermont County programs areleaning, the Barons will run a

spread offense with runningoptions out of the pistol.

Milller, Canter and Troxell willbe featured in the Amelia offensewith junior quarterback TylerNicodemus at the helm.

Defensively, Hospelhorn andthe Barons aren’t too keen to sharewhat other teams will face whenthey line up across from the whiteand blue, saying “let them figure itout.”

As has become tradition,

Amelia will open their season onAug. 30 against West ClermontLocal School District rival GlenEste on the Trojans’ home turf.

If a winning season is in thecards for Amelia, they will have tomake some hay in the SouthernBuckeye Conference throughoutthe season, playing four of theirnine games against AmericanDivision foes with the first leaguegame coming halfway through theseason when they host Goshen.

“Our rush defense has toimprove from last season,” Dreyersaid. “The last two games weallowed over 1,000 yards rushing, combine. As a team that’s what wefocused on the most this offsea-son.”The Bronco offense has made

some improvements as well.Senior quarterback Devyn Woodhas been working with hisreceivers to make the offense“faster and better.”“As a team we can play very

fast,” Dreyer said. “We might notbe the quickest team speed wise, but the tempo is going to be as fastpaces as possible. We’re going totry to play basketball on grass. That’s who we are as a team rightnow.”

BY CHRIS CHANEYSun staff

Coming off of a historic 2012 sea-son, the Batavia Bulldogs return tothe gridiron with some new faces, but the same expectations.“Expectations are the same

every year,” head coach Don Sizersaid. “We have three goals: statechamps, city champs, leaguechamps. You shoot for those everyyear, but we have some expecta-tions because of our personnel. We’re going to have a lot of kidsplaying — young kids — we’regoing to keep things simple andlet them have some fun.”The most recognizable return-

ing face from the Bulldogs’ post-season run last year is junior quar-terback KeShawn Foley, a 6-foot-

3, 230 pound force that Sizerexpects to play a big role inBatavia’s success this season. “He’s a horse and we’re going

to ride him, for sure,” Sizer said.“But we’re not going to beat himto death, we’re going to spread the

ball around and use our other kids’talents as well.“I think when you have a good

player like (Foley) and you try touse him every single play, youactually diminish his success andthe team’s success. You want themto key in on everyone else, sowhen (Foley) does get his turn,he’s able to be more dynamic.”Foley will head up an offensive

unit that replaces a handful ofsenior All-Stars with new namesin their old positions. ShaunHowe, Sean Hill, and Tyler Woodswill play alongside returningstarter Tony Gatto. They will try touse their speed to get to the edgemore often and spread out defens-es in order to keep the middle ofthe field open as an option as well. The Bulldogs will try and

spread the field out a uniqueBatavia-style Wing-T that alsoaccentuates Foley’s ability to

throw the ball. Sizer was quick tocompliment his coaching staff onhow well they have developedreceivers because, as the coachsaid, a quarterback with an arm isno good throwing to receiverswith no hands. Defensively, Sizer said that

Batavia will look very similar towhat they did last year, develop-ing their talent throughout theyear, starting with simple playcalls and adding different varia-tions as players become morecomfortable with the system. It is the hope of Sizer and his

staff that the 2013 version of theBulldogs can be just as successful,if not more so, than their 2012counterparts. Batavia and the rest of the area

will find out if that is the casebeginning on Aug. 30 when theBulldogs travel to New Miami fortheir season opener.

The five team captains forWestern Brown have two thingson their collective minds, beatingBatavia and Norwood – the teamswho gave the Broncos their end ofthe season losses last year. With a record of 8-2 last season,

the Broncos could just hope forthe same this year, but what kindof football team would they be ifthat was the case?

“This season we return a lot ofexperience,” Western Brown headcoach Evan Dreyer said. “Lastyear we were very inexperiencedin a lot of key positions, and thisyear we look forward to seeingthat grow.”Among the returning players are

the senior captains; Devyn Wood,Derrick Mcintosh, JustinLongbottom, Ryan Fulner andKalan Kaumpf. The Bronco lead-ers are agreed on making it to theplayoffs, even winning the SBC

title if everything goes to plan. And with the program movingdown to Division III, after spend-ing a few years in Division II,those goals are very much inreach.“It helps us be on a level playing

field with teams that have thesame enrollment (as us) and itsgreat to be able to compete and(hopefully) make it to week 11,”Dreyer said.He continued, “Last season, 8-2

in Division II was a great record.

This season we’re just going toplay each day, try to improve andtake each week as it comes.”Taking each week, and oppo-

nent, one by one is the mentalityDreyer is trying to instill on hisplayers.“Sometimes high school ath-

letes look way beyond the nextgame, so we are going to improveour focus on a daily basis,” hesaid. What happens on the field deter-

mines if the Broncos will be enter-

ing the playoffs though, and therehasn’t been any time wasted inthat aspect. The biggest change Bronco fans

will notice is the new defensivelook. This season Dreyer decidedto go with a 3-4 defense, whichnine of the returning players willbe on.In a nutshell, it will be “very

basic” with different looks beingthrown at opposing offenses. Theplan with changing the defense isto be “very fast” and stop the run.

In his second year at the helm ofthe Bethel-Tate football program, head coach Bill Jenike is in themidst of turning the Tigers aroundusing the weapons that he inherit-ed. Initially, Jenike and the Tigers

were encouraged by the amount ofstudent-athletes that signed up toplay football this year, but whentwo-a-days started up, the numberof newcomers willing to put in thework dwindled. Still, Jenike likesthe squad he has and has highhopes for the 2013 campaign. “The group we got has nine

seniors that have been with us fortwo years,” the coach said. “In ourscrimmage, it was good to see theimprovement that those kids haveshown being with us through theyear. That’s what you look forwhen you’re coaching. “Every year’s different with

personnel and finding out what’s

best for the kids that you have interms of putting them in the posi-tion to win.”Jenike and his staff decided that

in order to put his players in thebest position to win that an over-haul of the offensive and defen-sive strategies was in order.Offensively, the Tigers will run

a pistol zone-read option, whichaccentuates the ability and speedof second-year junior quarterbackAllan Haave. Haave has a nicerunning mate in the backfield insenior All-Southern Buckeye

Conference running back BlaceHaviland. Blocking for Haviland and

Haave will be Brandon Lewis andSamuel Price will be a nice throw-ing option at the tight end posi-tion. On the defensive side of the

ball, Bethel-Tate will run adefense that mirrors the changingculture of football in ClermontCounty; more specifically, adefense that defends more againstthe pass-first offense many teams

are switching to. The Tigers will run a 3-3 stack

defense that employs 3 linemenand three linebackers with fivedefensive backs that can crash thebox or cover more receivers as theoffense dictates. In the eyes of the Ohio High

School Athletic Association,Bethel-Tate is now a Division Vschool, but with eight gamesagainst big-school opponents, they have their work cut out forthem. Accordingly, the Tigers

have scheduled games against fel-low small schools Oyler (weekone) and Troy Christian (weekfive) that give them a better ideaof what they could be up against inthe postseason.“I think if we get the ball rolling

with some wins early, it could be agood year,” Jenike said. The Tigers will open with the

aforementioned Oyler HighSchool on Aug. 30 at home.

Williamsburg head coach ScottLefker has liked what he has seenin the preseason from his Wildcatsquad, but he wouldn’t go so far asto make any guarantees. TheWildcats, who went 3-7 last sea-son, return experience at manypositions and Lefker hopes thatthose experiences can translateinto more wins.

“Expectations-wise, I’m hopingwe’ll be a little more competitivethan last year,” the coach said.

“We have a little bit more speedand more maturity. We return a lotof starters, so the hope is that they

will be more prepared and be bet-ter leaders. We’re looking forwardto building on that 3-7 season.”

Starting from the top down, theWildcats will be led by two-yearstarting quarterback LaneEdminsten, junior Mason Hall, asecond-year starting running backand Jordan Wright, Brad Jones andNick Felts, returners all, on theline to block for Edminsten andHall.

The Wildcats will run an offenseout of the pistol formation that willbe spread about half the time,Lefker said.

On the other side of the ball, junior defensive end JaredSpurlock will once again be rush-ing the passer from the edge andFelts will turn around and play onthe defensive line as well.

In the secondary, Austin Hornwill head up a defense that Lefkerexpects to be more athletic andfaster, which he hopes will preventgiving up as many scores.

“Last year we gave up too manypoints, so the goal is to give uptwo scores or less (in each game)this year and I think we have thedefense to do it.”

The defensive formationcharged with that task will be a 4-4 attacking defense.

Another goal for the Wildcatswill be to earn a playoff berth. With the Ohio High SchoolAthletic Association switching upthe divisional breakdown,Williamsburg is now a Division VIschool.

“Our opportunities are greater tomake the playoffs,” Lefker said ofwhat the change means. “In thepast, we’ve been 8-2 and didn’t getin, but how it’s set up now, if wego 8-2, we shouldn’t have a prob-

The Clermont NortheasternRockets aren’t looking in therearview mirror; they are focusedon the here and now. Last seasonwas last season and head coachJason Conley is liking what he’sseeing from his squad as theRockets prepare to kick off their2013 campaign.“This group is having a lot of

fun and their attitudes and (will-ingness) to come out here and playfootball is going to help us to gofurther than we did last year,”Conley said. “They’re flying to theball and moving around. The atti-tude is much better this year andthey are working harder than inthe past, so I think we can defi-nitely have a better season becauseof that.”Heading up that change in work

ethic and attitude are a group ofplayers that include senior centerand inside linebacker JoshForkner, sophomore running backand outside linebacker DaltonMiracle and senior quarterbackDylan Creager. Conley also said that the addi-

tion of some new players moving

into the district have reinvigoratedthe team’s morale and have put aspark into their practices that hadbeen lacking.Strategically, the Rockets will

be running a spread pistol featur-ing as many as four wide receiverson the outside, hopefully spread-ing opposing defenses out and giv-ing CNE the ability to run the ballas well. Defensively, the CNE will run a

3-5-3 defense that will rely ontheir versatile linebacking corps toeither drop into coverage or stopthe run depending on the oppo-nent’s offensive makeup. While the Rockets lost a few

seniors of their own to graduation,Conley said that CNE’s SouthernBuckeye Conference NationalDivision rivals did so as well, cre-ating a fairly level playing fieldheading into the 2013 season. Conley pointed to Batavia as the

odds-on favorite heading into theseason, sight unseen, but expectsWilliamsburg, Bethel-Tate andBlanchester to be competitive inthe league as well. The Rockets will get their sea-

son underway on Aug. 30 whenthey host Fayetteville-Perry. Clermont Northeastern’s sched-

ule includes nonconference gamesagainst Madeira, Amelia andGoshen prior to getting theirleague season underway in weekfive when they host defendingSBC champions Batavia.A tough schedule throughout

the season will see the Rocketsface four of the six teams from the

other side of the SBC, all of whomare larger schools and could causesome matchup problems for CNEin terms of personnel. However, Conley thinks his

team can surprise some people ifthey continue to work hard andleave everything they have on thefield.

Coming into the 2013 season, seemingly the only thing that isn’t“new” at New Richmond is thename. First-year head coach JoshStratton has overhauled the pro-gram in his first few months at thehelm, introducing a new offense, defense and scheme terminologywhile holding true to the Lions’tradition of hard work.

Armed with a senior-laden ros-ter, the Lions hope to improveupon their .500 season a year ago,but don’t expect the new coach topromise anything in terms of winsand losses.

“My expectations are that ourkids are going to show up everyday and work hard,” Stratton said.

“I don’t really have expectationsas far as record on the season oranything like that — just day today.”

The day-to-day grind has beenin full force for New Richmondfor a while now with a dedicatedgroup that has been in the weight

room throughout the offseason. And since preseason camp began afew weeks back, the Lions havebeen doing their best to acclimatethemselves with the new systemsbrought in by Coach Stratton.

The Lions will run a spreadoffense headed up by senior quar-terback Levi Simpson who in hissecond year as the New Richmond

signal caller has proven his abilityto be an all-around quarterback.

Simpson will have a strongreceiving corps to open up theoffense to led by senior MalikDavis.

The Lions will also retain theirability to run the ball, splitting car-rying duties between senior BlakeThompson and junior TylerAnderson, who will run behind a“loaded” offensive line led by atrio of seniors: Cole Goodnow,Nathan Snider and Jacob Hurst.Sophomore Tyler Sammons, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing inat 272 pounds, will start at righttackle. The coach said that he isloaded with potential and apigskin fanatic who hasn’t misseda workout or practice since enter-ing the program a year ago.

Stratton was also high on fellowsophomore Austin Torrens, a widereceiver, who the coach believeswill be a big offensive weapon injust his second season in red andblack.

On the defensive side of theball, Stratton said the defense hasdone an admirable job picking upthe new terminology and cover-ages brought in. The defense willbe led by Evan Brigner, a seniorinside linebacker, and senior noseguard Will Lytle.

Stratton also made sure to makespecial mention of Jake Haukewhom he called the “most consis-tent hard worker on the team.”Hauke will lead a secondary ofmostly upperclassmen

The Lions open up againstIndian Hill for the second consec-utive year on Aug. 30 at home.New Richmond won last year 21-14.

After winning only seven gamesduring three seasons, theFayetteville Rockets have hopesof turning their program aroundthis year.

To help with the turn around, anew head coach, Nathan Geers, was hired and he brought with hima new staff – as well as new offen-sive plans.

“It’s a great situation and a greatopportunity. We can make it (theprogram) grow and blossom intosomething special,” Geers said.

Even though the Rockets haveseen three coaches in four seasons,Geers doesn’t feel any pressure inhis new position. He is comfort-able in his surroundings after

spending the last two years as theFayetteville defensive coordinator.

“We’re coming in with highexpectations. We think we can dobigger and better things, and wehope to accomplish that,” Geerssaid.

Geers’ staff have the bar sethigh, but so do the players. Thereturning seniors, includingTanner Burchett and AndrewDowers, are helping to anchor theteam and right the ship this season.

“We’re playing with a lot moreheart this year,” Burchett said.

“This senior class has someexperience, they know what its

like on Friday night and what ittakes to win games,” Geers said.

As far as on the field goes, thedefense is more or less staying thesame while the offense has beenchanged. The Rockets are stillgoing to be a heavy run team, justwith a few new looks and forma-tions.

“All of our pieces on offense aremainly back, including our quar-terback, tailback and receivingthreats,” Geers said. “We’re goingto a double wing look, which iscompletely different from lastyear.”

Last season the offense was pri-

marily run out of a Power-I forma-tion, but with the new look, andteams were able to catch onto tothe plays. This season, Geerswants to make every play look thesame, hoping to catch teams offguard.

On the other side of the ball, expect to see the same 3-4 front aslast year with as much pressurebeing put on the quarterback aspossible.

“Every week will be exciting,”Geers said. “Our kids won’t backdown from anyone and they willput in the effort to make sure thisprogram has continued success.”

The Milford Eagles footballprogram under head coach ShaneElkin is taking the steps to becomea consistent threat not only theEastern Cincinnati Conference, but in the Southwestern Ohio

region as well.“At this point, where we were

last year (compared with) thisyear, we’re at two completely dif-ferent places,” Elkin said. “I feellike we’re light years ahead of ourprogression at this point. I’m veryhappy with our growth as a team.”

While the team is making

strides to become a consistentplayer, the Eagles will be playingon one of the best fields inClermont County come the team’shome opener on Sept. 6. The newfield turf being installed at Milfordis expected to be finished in daysand the show of good faith madeby the boosters of the school haveElkin excited for where his pro-gram is going.

“I think it’s exciting,” Elkin saidof the new turf. “I’ve been here for

15 years and I couldn’t tell you thelast time something of this magni-tude in the football program hastaken place in terms of such alarge investment by so many stakeholders.”

The team that will be perform-ing on the new field will be led byjunior quarterback Drew Ashcraftand Elkin believes the team’s suc-cess hinges greatly on Ashcraft’sability to master the system he isrunning.

“He’s involved in a lot of thedecision making on the field,”Elkin said. “Everything we do isoption-based. Every play could bechecked out of by our quarterbackor our receivers, so the more insync they become, the better wecan be.”

The Eagles will run a variationof the spread option that usesAshcraft as well as running backsJosh Fardy and Jack Young. Elkinsaid he expects the pair to help

Ashcraft a lot. Out wide, juniorDrew Richards and sophomoreBen Greenwell will be the Eaglesmain playmakers. With such awell-rounded offense Elkinexpects the different weapons toopen up seams and opportunitiesthat he hasn’t had as a head coachat Milford.

On defense, Milford will run anactive 3-4 with blitzes comingfrom a lot of different places todisorient the offense. The Eagleswill start nine juniors, which hasElkin excited about the opportuni-ty to develop a solid unit over thenext two years.

The Eagles begin their seasonon Aug. 30 against Hamilton andwill get into conference play onSept. 27 against Anderson.

The saying goes that championsare made in the offseason. If thatphrase holds true, opponents of theGlen Este Trojans are in for atough season. “The team is coming together

really well,” head coach NickAyers said. “We had a great off-season all the way up to camp. We’ve had great two-a-days.We’ve also had some injuries, butsome younger guys have steppedup allowing those older guys toheal. It’ll be good to get bothgroups rolling and get the entireteam healthy for the season open-er.”The Trojans will look to

improve on their 4-6 season lastyear in which they went .500 inthe inaugural season of the EasternCincinnati Conference. Returningplayers had a bitter taste in theirmouths after dropping the last twogames of 2012 in one-possessioncontests. So bitter is the taste thatAyers said the offseason workoutattendance has been impressive.“Right now, we have about 60

(guys) on our roster and our atten-dance (to offseason workouts) hasbeen between 47 and 55, so our

numbers have been pretty high,”Ayers said. “Every one was abovethe 80 percent mark as far as beingthere.”Ayers and the Trojans hope that

hard work will manifest itself onthe field in terms of wins. Makingup the roster in 2013 will be a coreof senior leadership headed up byJordan Harris and Robbie Cann.Harris, the running back, returnsas the Trojans’ most consistentoffensive performer and Ayersexpects him to duplicate his juniorseason output in his final year.Harris’ backfield mate Cannshowed later in the 2012 seasonthat he could add a dimension tothe Trojans run offense as well. Both Harris and Cann will see a

lot of time and touches as theTrojans will run the Wing-T out of

the pistol formation.Senior linebacker Tyler Burdick

will head up the defensive unit andis getting looks from Division Icolleges around the country.Backing him up in the secondarywill be a trio of senior defensive

backs in Tyler Flanigan, DevonShannon and Kyle Keszei.GE will run a 50 defense that

puts five men on the line of scrim-mage that puts pressure on the rungame while also having the abilityto be flexible enough to drop back

into coverage. The Trojans will open the sea-

son with their annual rivalry gameagainst West Clermont LocalSchool District foe Amelia onAug. 30. The Trojans have wonthe last three season openersagainst the Barons.

A good start and mediocre finishto the 2012 season has the GoshenWarriors ready to right theirwrongs in 2013 and compete for aSouthern Buckeye Conferencechampionship.Head coach Mark Slagle, the

self-proclaimed “king of clichés,”believes every word of the max-ims he proclaims, including whatit will take for his team to have abetter second half of the season.“We have to stay healthy,” he

said. “With small schools, if youget to the middle of the year andlose some kids, it makes it tough(to win). We need to maintain ourfocus better and be able to performwhen the pressure is on.”As the coach, Slagle took credit

for the fall off, but believes he hasa group this year that will continueto work hard throughout the sea-son.“We feel like we’ve got talented

young men and I really think our

expectations of them are to workhard and represent this school andcommunity in a positive manner,”the coach said. In order to sustain that work

ethic throughout the ranks, Slaglelooks to his experienced linemento lead the way. Senior guardsBrandon Lunsford and SebastianWolfenbarger along with seniortackle Jimmy Carr and runningback Scotty Nichols have beenpegged as the leaders of theWarriors for Slagle and his staff. Offensively, the Warriors will

be throwing the ball around, pri-marily lining up in a shotgunspread that gives a wide-rangingreceiving corps the opportunity tomake some plays and heavilyinfluence the outcome of thegame. On the defensive side of the

ball, Goshen will run a 4-2-5 basedefense that Slagle hopes will givehis team the ability to matchup

with the differing offenses runaround the SBC. The Warriors schedule is the

exact same as a year ago with theonly difference being the site ofthe games. Opening the season 4-0 would be a dream start for Slagleand his Goshen squad, but the realtest will begin on Friday, Sept. 27when they open conference play at

Amelia. The Barons dealt theWarriors a heartbreaking 36-33defeat last year that beganGoshen’s four-game midseasonskid. Before the Warriors get into the

meat of their schedule, they willopen up at Ross and then hostHillsboro at home in week two.

30 at home.

WESTERN BROWN

BY CHRIS CHANEYSun staff
