AS91246 – Global Disparities – What Where and Why

Aim• To start writing up the second section.• To identify a pattern and provided reasons why you have identified

that spatial arrangement

2. PresentationPresent your findings in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, a Prezi, a poster or a report. •

Include in your presentation:• A comprehensive explanation of the global pattern. • First, identify the spatial arrangement of the data (the pattern) you have collected. Produce a map

or diagram which shows where child labour occurs around the world.•

• In your answer use geographic terms and concepts to describe the pattern. •

• Specific evidence and reference to regions or nations across different continents or hemispheres need to be incorporated into your answer as well.

• A comprehensive explanation of the causes that contribute to the global pattern. • Explain in detail what has caused the pattern, using specific evidence and referring to regions or

nations across different continents or hemispheres. •

• A comprehensive explanation of the significance (effects of) your chosen topic for people in different parts of the world.

• Excellence requires you to fully explain showing insight, the significance of the topic for people• e.g. how child labour affects people in different parts of the world, consider social, political,

cultural, economic and environmental factors.•

• Use relevant evidence to support your explanation. Include your sources in a bibliography.

REMEMBER YOU NEED TO STATE WHERE YOU HAVE GOT YOUR INFORMATION FROM! – SO make a bibliography!

So what do you need to do today?

• 1. Create a Google Doc which you are going to write up your assessment in.

• 2. Share this with me! ([email protected])

• 3. Find a world map that shows the topic you have chosen and copy and paste this into your Google Doc (ctlr C and ctlr V)

• 4. Write a paragraph to describe the pattern shown on the map. Use the geographical terms clustered, random, linear… to describe this pattern. Name countries/continents and hemispheres in your answer.

Useful sentence starters..

Most of the countries with the highest (life expectancy/internet access/literacy rate) are located…..These countries are clustered….Most of the countries in the northern hemisphere are………….is a country with a low (life expectancy/internet access/literacy rate/access to water) that is not near the others and is isolated.

A Map to show your global pattern.Source : https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/download/attachments/37323291/Internet-penetration-2008.png(5/12/14)

Your map needs to have;

A keyA titleColourLabels

It must make sense to someone who has never looked at this topic before.

You must also include the source in your bibliography.

Your paragraph should look something like the one below. The countries with the highest number of people with Internet access are located in the Northern Hemisphere. Countries such as Canadaand the USA have between 50-100% of the population with access to the Internet. New Zealand and Australia also have a high percentage of the population with Internet Access.Countries with a low percentage of the population with access to the internet are clustered in central and southern Africa and in Equatorial countries such as India and Bangladesh where less than 10% of the population have access.

There are odd random countries in central America such as Mexico which has a very low percentage (less than 50%) compared to the surrounding countries. Bolivia and Paraguay in South America also have a very low level of Internet Access compared to the surround countries, with less than 10%.

So what do you need to do Today?• “A comprehensive explanation of the causes that

contribute to the global pattern. Explain in detail what has caused the pattern, using specific evidence and referring to regions or nations across different continents or hemispheres.”

• (this will probably take 2 lessons)

Explain why your Global Pattern occurs.

What factors have caused the pattern of Life Expectancy/World Hunger/Internet Access that you have just described?

Could it be;• Poverty• Cultural Reasons – religion, political beliefs, traditions, colonisation• Natural Reasons – climate, extreme natural events, locationLikely to be a mixture………

Plan!!! Do not start writing until you have a rough essay plan!

• What is it we are looking at…

• Cultural factors…

• What evidence can I provide and from what sources (need to have a specific country to use as an example) ?....

• Natural Factors…

• What evidence can I provide and from what sources?...

• Summary sentence…..

Sentence starters…• I am looking at the global pattern of…

• Some of the factors that have caused this pattern include…

• (GDP/Wealth/HDI) is shown on the map below. The clusters of countries with the highest (GDP/Wealth/HDI) match the location of the global pattern I described earlier….

• …… is one of the factors that has caused this global pattern this is shown by………..

• Some of the Natural Factors that have caused this global pattern includes……………….

• In summary the most important factors that have caused this global are…….

Task 3A comprehensive explanation of the significance of the topic for people in different parts of the world. Use relevant evidence to support your explanation. (Explain how this topic affects people in different parts of the world)

How does your chosen topic effect people in different areas around the world?

Does is have an impact on their daily lives? Their opportunities in life?Does is effect their standard of living? How does it effect countries that have a high and low incidence of your chosen topic? (how does it effect countries with a high life expectancy or a low life expectancy?)

Name countries and regions around the globe and explain how your topic effects them.

Example….

• Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. This means that most people can expect to live over 80 years. This has had a large impact on their society as it has meant that 1 in 4 people in Japan is over 65. There population is aging and there are not enough young people being born.

• However it also means that they are one of the wealthiest countries in the world (GDP per capita = $38’664) as they have a healthy and well educated workforce.

• Mozambique has a life expectancy of only 55years. This means that many people will not live into old age. They have a very young population and a large proportion of the population is uneducated………………………

Impacts could include….(these do not apply to every topic you will have to pick and choose the ones that apply to you!)

Social

Aging or a very young society.

Lack of educational opportunities.

Lack of access to resources (internet technology)

Malnutrition/Disease

Families loosing guidance of older generation

Lack of job opportunities or options in life

Economic

Not enough people healthy enough to work

Difficult to make money with no access to technology

Cost of providing care for elderly or young

Not enough skilled or educated people to work

Task 3 – Sentence starters

This topic can effect people all over the world, for example………………………………….

It can have an impact on the economy of a country because……………. an example of this is…………….

It can have an impact on the way a country develops because……..

However it can also effect people’s lives………………..

I believe that it has a great impact in………

In contrast it has less impact in………..

In conclusion I believe…………………
