IntroductionTheinteractiveenvironmentwillbeafigurativeinterpretationofthedataIcollectedontheindividualIresearchedforthisbrief.

1Theplanfocusesonthestadiumatthecenteroftheenvironmentanditsunusualcontentsinside.Insidethestadiumthereisanotherwholeworldwhichisacompletecontrasttotheworldontheoutside.Theworldinsidehasrunningwater,mountains,treesandacave.

Surroundingthestadiumtherearetheusualassetsyouwouldexpecttocomeacrossoutsideofafootballstadium,suchaspavements,barriers,burgervansandstandssellingclubmerchandise.

EverydecisionmadethroughouttheproductionofthisenvironmentlinksbacktotheinformationIhavecollected.

PurposeIimaginethisworldtobeliketheindividualitisbasedordinaryontheoutsidebutnotallisasitseems.Iwanttheenvironmenttotakeyouonajourneythroughhislifeexperiencesandthestory’sIhavebeentold.

Theinsideofthestadiumwillrelatetotheindividualspersonalityaswellashislifeexperiences.

Theoutsideofthestadiumwillbebasedonwhatyouwouldexpecttoseeontheoutsideofastadiumandfairlydullrelatingtotheaspectofworkinglonghoursrunningyourowncompany.

Outside StadiumTheoutsideofthestadiumhasalotofopenspaceduetothefacttheindividualdoesnotliketobeconfinedtoonespaceandenjoyshavinghisownfreedom.Thisalsolinkstohisjobrunninghisowncompanyashedecidesthehoursheworksbeingincontrolofhisfreetime.

TheareaandtheappearanceoftheoutsideofthestadiumisdesignedonGoodisonparkthehomeofEvertonFootballclub,theindividualsboyhoodclubwhichbecamealargepartofhislife.

Therearetwostandssellingtheclubsmerchandisesuchasscarfsandposters.Aswellasthemerchandisestandstherewillbeotherassetsyouwouldcometoexpectfromtheoutsideofafootballgroundsuchasburgervans.

FromtheoutsideofthegroundyoucanhearchantsoftheEvertonFCfans.AsyouwalktowardstheentranceofthegroundyoubegintohearthesoundofZ-cars,thesongthatisplayedastheplayerswalkdownthetunnelandontothepitchbeforeagame.Thisisalsotheindividualsring-toneforhismobilephone.

Inside StadiumInsidethestadiumIhavebeenquiteimaginativewithmyfigurativeinterpretationoftheindividual.IhavebasedthelandscapefortheinteriorofthestadiumonhistravelsaroundAustralia.IknowAustraliaisasignificantpartofwhoheistodayashehasdecidednottoflyonaBritishpassportanymoredespitebeingborninBritain.WhenIinterviewedtheindividualandwetalkedaboutAustraliahewouldalwaystalkabouthowhewouldliketoretireoutthereandsoIhavebroughtthistohimbybuildingalittlebitofparadise.

IgatheredsomephotographsfromvariousphotoalbumstheindividualsaidIcoulduse,asareferencewhilstdesigningthelandscape.Thesunisshinningineveryphotoandsothatwasanobrainerfortheweatherconditions,Ifeelthisalsorepresentshispersonalityadheisahappybubblymanwhomostlyenjoyslife.

Onceinsidethestadiumyoucantakeinavarietyofsoundscomingfromtheenvironment.Listentotherunningwater,soundsofAustralia,andvariousothersoundsbasedaroundtheindividual.

Corner of AustraliaThiscornerisbuildbasedonsomeitemsIfoundaroundtheindividualshouse.IliketocallthecornerofAustraliabecauseittheywereallitemshehadgatheredduringhistravels.IgotonebigprintsonthewallideafromanAustralianinstrument(digareedoo)theindividualowned.ItookthepatternfromthatanddecidedtomakeaseriesofprintsonthewallsjusttheaboriginesdoinAustralia.

ThegiantrockswheresomethingIhadseeninphotographshehadtakenclosetoayerrock,whilstlivinginAustralia.

ThecampfirewasanideaItookfromhispartnerwhoinformedmetheyusedtodoalotofcampingandhikingwhilsttravelingthecountry.

Astheplayerwalksuptothewallprintsyoucanhearthesoundsofthedidgeridooplaying.

IdeallyIwouldhavelikedtoofhadsomeanimalsfortheusertointeractwithbutduetotimeconstraintsalongwithtryingtokeepmyPollycountdownIdecidedagainstit.

The StageThestageallowstheusertowalkup,andlistentotheindividualsfavouritemusiccomingfromhisphasea“punkrocker”.WhenIinterviewedtheinindividualhetalkedagreatdealaboutwhatitwaslikegrowingupandLiverpoolandthefantasticmusicculturethecityhadandsoIdecidedIhadtoincludethissomehowintheenvironment.

OnebandhesingledoutwastheclashsayingthathetraveledtoDeesideNorthWalestoseethemplayaswellasTheRoyalCourtinLiverpoolandTheBrixtonAcademy.

GiventhiswashisfavouritebandImadetogiantpostersandattachedthemtotheinsideofthestadiumwall.Theusercanwalkuponstageandinteractwiththepostersandlistento“Ifoughtthelaw”.

Construction AreaTheconstructionareaoftheenvironmentsolyfocusesontheindividualsworkinglife.Attheageofsixteenhewentintoworkandgotanapprenticeshipinmechanicalengineeringandlaterwentontosetuphisowncompany.

Iwantedtomakethistheaimofthe“game”sotheuserhadtogoaroundcollectingthelostequipmentandtoolsbecausetheindividualhasbeendescribedasforgetfulbyseveralpeopleincludinghimselfbutIhadalotoftroublewithcodingtodothis.

InsteadImadeacorneroftheenvironmentpartsofthetoolsareburiedinsamethoughthisismeanttorepresenthisforgetfulnessandmisplacedequipment.

Theusercanwalkovertothisareaandlistentosoundsofaconstructionsitethathavebeenrecorded.

The BridgeCrossingoverthebridgetakestheusertowardstheendoftheenvironment.Iputthisbridgeinasareflectionoftheindividualspersonality.Hehasbeeninworksincetheageof16andhasalwaysbeenveryindependent.Nowafatheroftwohehastosupportandprovideforthefamily.Thebridgeisanattempttoshowthatinafigurativeway.

Astheusercrossesthebridgetheycanhearthesoundofrunningwaterandthesoundsoftheenvironmentgetfainterandfainterastheyapproachtheend.

The CaveThecaveisanareawheretheusercansitbackandrelaxin,ithassmoothjazzmusicplayingwhichtheindividualrecommended.IhavealsodecidedtoincludeabikeastheindividualIresearchedtalkedallotabouthowheenjoyedcyclingtowalesandbackasadaytripthisisanotherreasonforthevastopenspacesintheenvironment.IdeallyIwouldhavelikedtohavemadeitsotheusercouldcyclearoundonthebikebutagainIhadtroublewiththecodes.

Thisistheendoftheenvironmentiftheuserwishestoexittheworld,hesimplyhasuptowalktotheseatsatthebackofthecaveandthegamewillgobacktothestartscreen.

MyFatherhaddoneextensivetravelingahewasaChefinthemerchantNavy,hehadlivedinUSA&NewZealand.Therefore,thetravelingbugwasinstilledintome.

Where did you grow up?

Liverpool

What was the earliest key point in your life?

Theearliestkeypointinmylifewaspassingthe11plus.Thisenabledmetogotoagrammarschool.

What was your favourite part of grammar school?

AtschoolIwasquitegoodatfootball&representedtheschoolsIwentto.IalsoplayedforthesamejuniorteamthatthecurrentEnglandInternational,WayneRooneyplayedfor.

What did you do after school?

Attheageof16Iengagedinanapprenticeshipasamechanicalengineer.

Did you have any hobbies or activities you took part in other than football?

Asateenager,aroundtheageof14to16,Ienjoyedcyclingalot.InthesummerIusedtocycletoWaleswithmyfriends.Thiswasafantasticdayout,asontheSunday,youcouldthencyclethoughtheMerseytunnel.Thiswasaroundtripinexcessof80miles.Wewouldstartatabout5am.CyclingintotheCity,&thenundertheRiverMersey,throughtheMerseytunnel.WewouldstopinWales&haveapackedlunch.Youhopedyoudidn’tgetapuncture.Someonealwaysdid.Iwaslucky,Inevergotone.Wewouldarrivehomearound2000hourscompletelyexhausted.

What else can you remember from growing up in Liverpool?

In1970Evertonwontheleague(Premiershipnowasitisnowcalled).At11IhadmyfirstseasonticketwatchingEverton.At12yearsofageIstartedtotraveltosomeawayfootballmatcheswatchingEverton.IdreamtofbeingthenextGordonWest.

AsIgotolderIhadaloveofmusicparticularlyPunkRockorNewWave.IusedtogotoaclubcalledEric’s,whichwasinMathewSt.ThefamousCavernClubHadgone.AndEric’swasverysimilarAndinthesamest.SomeofthebandIwatchedwere,Echo&theBunnymen,DeadorAlive,(PeteBurn’sfirstband)

What were you favourite bands?

MyfavouritebandwasTheClash.IsawthemplayinDeesideNorthWales,TheRoyalCourtinLiverpool&Brixtonacademy.DuringthisperiodIbecamea“PunkRocker”.

What did being a “Punk Rocker” involve?

Ihadvibrantcolouredhair.DuringoneparticularfootballgameLiverpoolvEverton,Istood(noseatsthen)ontheLiverpoolKop,withBlue,White&yellowhair.Thederby(EvertonvLiverpool)gamesbetweentheclubsarequitefriendly,comparedtoothercityrivals.AndEvertonalwayshadtherighthandsideoftheKop.Therefore,itwasnotascrazyasitsounds.Thegamefinished2-2.Withaplayerfromeachsidesentoff!

What did you do once your apprenticeship finished?

Afterfinishingmyapprenticeship.ImovedtoLondon.SecuringapositionasdutyengineerattheBritianniaIntercontinentalHotelonGrosvenorSq.Whichwassomewhatdifferenttobeinginnafactoryenvironment.Muchnicer&verygoodprivilegesfreestaysinotherIntercontinentalHotelsaroundtheworld.

How much traveling did you do?

Thismeantanawfullotoftravelingforme,&anightsleepinginagraveyardinRotterdamaftertheEuropeancupwinners’cupfinal.TheDutchlargerhelpedmesleep!TheyalsogottotheFAcupfinalagainin89.

IhadappliedforaworkingholidayvisatoAustraliabeforeImetKaren,sowithinmonthsofmeetingIwasofftoAustralia.

What was it like living in Australia?

IhadnumerousofjobsinSydney.Itraveledextensively.

What highlights can you remember from your stay in Australia?

ThedayafterclimbingUllaru(AyersRock).IwasatacampsiteatAliceSprings&itcameovertheradiotheamanhadfallenoff“therock”&died.But,werelandedwasadjacenttoadingolair,&ababy’sjumpsuitwasfoundinit.ThisjumpsuitwasAzariaChamberlain’sjumpsuit.Hermother,LindyChamberlainhadbeenwronglyconvictedofhermurderandsenttolifeinjailinDarwin.IwastravelingwithAATKingsanadventuretourcompany.WhenwegottoDarwinapproximatelythreedayslater,LindyChamberlainwasreleasedfromDarwinjail,thatday.ADingohadtakenAzaniaChamberlainfromatentattheUlurucampsite,&LindyChamberlainwasaccusedofkillingherdaughter,withapairofscissors.Thendisposingofherbody.Onlyin2012didLindyChamberlainreceiveafullpardon.

IreallylikedtheNorthernTerritoryespeciallyKakadu.IevenhadabeerortwointhebarnowfamousontheCrocodileDundeemovies.Anditisabarnotfilmset.Freemantlewasverycoolplace(theSail&Anchor,verygoodmusic&atmosphere),ontheSwanrivernearPerth.

IwatchedtheSocceroosquiteabitinAustralia,therewereseveralworldcupqualifyinggamesIwentto.NewZealand,Israel.TheywontheirOceaniagroup,buttheyhadtoplayoffagainstScotland.ThismatchwasplayedinMelbourne,&IflewtoMelbournetowatchitwithaScottishfriend.Australiaplayedverywell&deservedtowin.Thegamefinished00.Scotlandwentthrough,astheywonthefirstgameinScotland20.

How did you meet your wife?

IwasadmittedintoCharingCrossHospitalwithseverestomachpains,&thenurselookingaftermewasastudentnursecalledKarenParemain,nowKarenMooney.(Iwentintohospitalwithapaininthestomach,&cameoutwithapainintheneck).

When did yourself and Karen (mum) migrate to Australia together?

OnmyreturntotheUKImetKaren&westayedtogether,thenin1987webothmigratedtoAustralia&boughtourfirsthometogetheralovelyapartmentintheeasternsuburbswithtwopools&grounds.

How was living together in another country?

Karen&Iwentnumerousofconcerts,gigs&jazzevents.TheCoogeeBayhotelwasafavoritetoseelivebands.BobGeldoffplayedthere,Madness,INXS.MyfavoritejazzvenuewastheBasementoncircularquay.GalapadasDuckwasmyfavoriteJazzband.TheSydneyentertainmentcentrewasthemainvenueforsuchbandsinthe80’s,asU2,BBKing.

NotfarfromwherewelivedwasaplacecalledLaPerouse.Everyweekendareptileenthusiastwouldbethere.Withvariousreptiles&snakes.Thisguywasamazingsomeofthesnakeswouldattackahatheusedasaprop,youcouldseethevenom&theferocityofthesnakescloseup.TheRocksnearCircularQuayintheCityisagreatplacetosocialize&strollaround.TheBlueMountainsjustoveranhour’sdrivewestofSydneyisalsoagreatfavoriteofmine.Fantasticwalkslotstodogreathistory.TheareaiscalledtheBluemountainsbecauseofthehazegivenoffbytheEucalyptustrees.JenolanCavesisanhour’sdrivefromKattommbaintheBlueMountains,thisisalsoafavoriteofmine&CaveHousehotelwasalwaysintriguing.

When did you take out Australian citizenship?

In1990ItookoutAustralianCitizenship.InowflyonmyAustralianpassport,&renewitregular.

Why did you move back to the UK?

WithaheavyheartwemovedbacktotheUK,asKarenwasmissingherfamily.WestilltravelbacktoAustraliaregular&ourboyshavebeentherethreetimes.Thelasttime,wetookintheBoxingdaytest(cricket)inMelbourne.Wormaldwereverygoodtome&gavemeapositionwithWormaldintheUK.

When did you and mum get married?

Karen&Igotmarriedin1991&boughtahouseinReigate.In1992IsetupmyowncompanyKelstarFireEngineering.

How was starting up your own business?

Oneofourfirstcontractswasonthechanneltunnel,aprojectWormaldhadbeenchasing.Kelstarhasnowworkedonnumerousprestigiousprojects/buildings.

WehaveaCompanytableinTheCaptainsTableLoungeatEverton.Andwehavehadcompanysignsaroundthestadium.Wesponsorgamesfromtimetotime.
