I was asked to write an article about bicycle safety. I’m not sure why I was considered. My safety record this year has not been very good. In February I rode my road bike into the back of a furniture truck. That resulted in a broken wrist, fractured eye socket, seven staple laceration, bruised ribs and a concussion. After several weeks of PT I was cleared to get back on my bike. On my second ride (mountain bike this time) I hit a rut, went over the handle bars and fractured my pelvis, lots of road rash and those ribs got bruised again. In both accidents the cause was MY inattention. While thinking about other recent accidents I believe that inattention was the cause, or at least a causative factor, in most of them. We do the best we can to be attentive and safe but I don’t believe there is any way to completely avoid this factor. Some sound or sight will inevitably draw your attention, if even for a second, away from the task at hand. The 2 nd Quarter VS Newsbrief (on website) covers several aspects of safe riding. But today I’m preaching mitigation. The one automatic action that has the greatest chance of lessening injury in a crash is to wear a helmet when riding your bicycle. Just days after my first crash I saw an article in the SF Chronicle that was a personal account of traumatic brain injury. I have included it and I hope I have given proper credit. Riding safely should be our constant goal but when or if “something” happens I want to be wearing my helmet. I can’t imagine the results of my first accident, when I was wearing a helmet, had I not had been wearing one. Bob Heady, Valley Spokesmen Member ________________________________________________________________________ Reprinted from SFChronicle March 4, 2015 Before you ride without a helmet… By Amy Morosini There are reasons why some people don’t want to wear bike helmets. But none of them makes sense to me. If you really want to make an educated decision about whether or not to wear a helmet, then first you should know what it’s like to live with a traumatic brain injury. A traumatic brain injury is defined as a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury each year in the United States. At least 5.3 million Americans have a longterm or lifelong need for help to perform activities of daily living as a result of a traumatic brain injury. Don’t think this will happen to you? That’s what I thought, too. I didn’t receive my traumatic brain injury in a bike accident, but I did get it from cracking my skull on the pavement. I was an active 27yearold at the time, single, living alone in San Francisco with a promising career in the information technology industry. All of that ended with one fall. After I woke up from a coma at San Francisco General Hospital, I spent the next two months in the hospital undergoing numerous surgeries. After I was pieced back together, I was forced to mover across the country, back into my parent’ home because I needed 24hor care. I spent the next year relearning walking, talking, feeding myself and using the bathroom. I had double vision and sustained permanent hearing loss, facial paralysis and nerve damage throughout my entire body. But coping with the physical injuries was the easy part. It is the invisible injuries that make your life a living hell. The brain is the control center for all your body’s functions – walking, talking, breathing, swallowing, tasting, smelling, even controlling your heart rate. It also controls your thinking functions, emotions behavior and all intellectual activities, like how you perceive and understand our world, how you learn and how you remember. Traumatic brain injury causes shortterm memory lapses, so multitasking becomes impossible. Your life is now dictated by a series of Postit notes, reminding you what you need to do, where you need to be, who you need to call. You’ll even need one to remind yourself to turn the stove off so you don’t burn the house down. As my neurologist once said, “if only you could remember to remember.” Traumatic brain injury robs you of the ability to control your emotions. Happiness becomes euphoria, anger becomes rage, sadness will cripple you with depression. Each day is a struggle just to get out of bed due to severe exhaustion. Sleep becomes your best friend. Social life? Forget it. You can no longer handle large crowds, loud noises and bright lights. Too much stimulus causes your brain to overload and shut itself off. I call that my zombie phase because my body will function, but my brain has left the building. Your friends and family don’t understand what’s wrong with you because you look fine. They can’t see your damaged brain. Friendships are lost and families are broken apart. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. So before you decide that you are way too cool to be seen wearing a bike helmet, think about how cool it would be to live the rest of your life with a brain injury. Amy Morosini is a 46yearold wife and mother of three boys. After suffering traumatic brain injury in 1997, Morosini now competes in marathons a triathlons. www.tbichick.com Group Ride Schedule and Newsletter

The 2nd Quarter VS Newsbrief (on website) covers several aspects of safe riding. At least 5.3 million Americans have a long‐term or lifelong need for help to perform activities of daily living as a result of a traumatic brain injury.   Don’t think this will happen to you? That’s what I thought, too.   I didn’t receive my traumatic brain injury in a bike accident, but I did get it from cracking my skull on the pavement. I was an active 27‐year‐old at the time, single, living alone in San Francisco with a promising career in the information technology industry. All of that ended with one fall.   After I woke up from a coma at San Francisco General Hospital, I spent the next two months in the hospital undergoing numerous surgeries. After I was pieced back together, I was forced to mover across the country, back into my parent’ home because I needed 24‐hor care. Traumatic brain injury causes short‐term memory lapses, so multitasking becomes impossible. Your life is now dictated by a series of Post‐it notes, reminding you what you need to do, where you need to be, who you need to call. So before you de Due to changes or cancellation of a ride, go to the VS website ride calendar to confirm the accuracy of a ride listing.

TOURING RIDE RATINGS All rides are rated according to predicted difficulty. TERRAIN: 1) Generally flat with a few easy grades, suitable for beginners and casual riders. 2) Mostly easy grades with a few rolling hills, a challenge for beginners. 3) Moderate grades, some challenge for the average rider. 4) Steep grades with some relief. 5) Mostly steep grades, for strong riders. PACE: ND) No Drop - this means that the group will do its best not to lose any rider. No Drop is at the leader's discretion. Out of consideration to the other riders, check with the ride leader to determine whether you should ride on a particular ride. L) Leisurely, many regroups. M) Moderate, occasional regroups. B) Brisk, few stops. S) Steady, strenuous, rapid pace. The speeds of the following ratings can be estimated by the following: On the flattest 20-mile route (San Ramon Valley Blvd. e.g.), the average speed would be approximately: L=12 mph M=16 mph B=19 mph S=22 mph-plus. It is each rider’s responsibility to assess his or her own riding ability and fitness level and compare it to the ride rating before attempting a ride. If in doubt as to which level ride you should try, it would be best to start at the lower level and ride at that level until you feel comfortable moving on to the next level. Although there are periodic regroups and most hosts do their best to keep the group together, the only rides that are no-drop are the ones specifically stated ND.

Rides listed as “Beginner Friendly” will often be ridden by our most experienced riders, who just prefer to ride at a more leisurely pace. They will assist newer riders if requested. There will be slower-paced riders on these rides and will sometimes be listed as ND. Rides may be listed as Beginner Friendly if the route is an out-and-back and can be done at your own pace with your own turn-around point. Calaveras would be a good example of this. If in doubt, contact the ride host to get detailed information about a specific ride.

Rides listed as “Advanced Rides” are at a fast pace where riders will work together in a pace-line with minimal / no regroups. Not recommended for new riders.

All riders are welcome to show up for any ride scheduled, as long as you are prepared for possibly riding the route alone if it is above your level. Route slips are distributed at the start of a ride unless it is listed as a Show-n-Go, in which case the group will decide the route and no route slips are used.

It is our goal to provide as many varied rides as possible and to help guide our members and guests to the rides best suited to their riding preference / experience.

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE RATINGS All rides graded according to predicted difficulty as follows:

1) EASY: Mostly flat with few hills. 2) EASY/MODERATE: Increasing hills but mostly flat; of short distance. 3) MODERATE: Generally hilly terrain with some rough terrain & occasional obstacles.

4) STRENUOUS: Long, steep ascents and descents & very rough terrain. 5) MOST STRENUOUS (GONZO): Better have a few espressos before saddling up - ridiculously long, steep climbs & drops; lots of obstacles. Always bring adequate water and food.

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VALLEY SPOKESMEN RIDES!!

No headphones or ear buds (except hearing aids) of any type are permitted on Valley Spokesmen rides.

No cell phone use while actively riding.

ATTENTION: All riders must sign a liability waiver form, which is on the ride sign-in sheet, from the ride leader. WEATHER: If there is a chance of rain, snow, sleet, hail or extreme temperatures on the day of the ride, the ride status will be posted to the VS e-mail list. Or contact the ride host before the ride for an update. For Mountain Bike Rides, rain 48 hours prior to the ride cancels. DURATION OF RIDES: If you wish to know the approximate length of time for any of the following rides listed - including rest stops, lunch stops, sightseeing, etc., - please e-mail or call the ride host. CAR POOLING: Carpooling is strongly encouraged, particularly on the out-of-town rides. Car pools are often posted to the VS e-mail list or post one yourself. SAFETY: Bikes and cars have equal rights!!! Remember to use courtesy toward other users of the roadway and pay attention to ALL Vehicle Codes. Bicycle rider courtesy to motorists results in motorist courtesy to bicycle riders. CODE OF CONDUCT: All Valley Spokesmen members are expected to interact with one another with respect. The use of inappropriate behavior and/or language may result in suspension leading up to expulsion from the Valley Spokesmen club. Determination of disciplinary action will be decided by the Executive Board. If you stop to take a cell phone call the group is not obligated to wait. VERY IMPORTANT: ALL RIDES LEAVE AT THE SCHEDULED TIME INDICATED. PLAN TO MEET 15 TO 30 MINUTES BEFORE THAT TIME!

Note: Ride changes, cancellations and additional rides are posted to the VS e-mail list and the web site ride calendar www.valleyspokesmen.org/ridecalendar Be informed: current VS members can register for the VS e-mail list: http://www.valleyspokesmen.org/Sys/vs-list and follow the prompts.

The motion was seconded by Kathy and approved by all present. The approved minutes from the June 10, 2015 Board meeting can be found in the July Newsletter. There are no July minutes because the meeting was canceled due to no quorum present. TREASURER’S REPORT: Dan reported that we are fiscally sound. The checking account has a healthy balance and the savings account is unchanged. OLD BUSINESS Ride Report: Peter had nothing new to report, due in part, to his recent trip. He has, however, shared photos of his Canadian adventure with Clay, Bob, and Joe on Trip Track. V.S. Website: Ken reported that membership has increased to 749 members (including family memberships). Currently, Valley Spokesmen has 401 individual members and 348 family members. There was a brief discussion on the PayPal set up for renewing memberships. As a consequence of the current set up, members may receive two receipts (one from PayPal and one from Valley Spokesmen). The dual receipts

led to some members thinking they may have paid twice. The Board explored other options to make the payment system less confusing. However, it was decided that the additional cost of modifying the system combined with the number of times the issue came up, made any changes cost ineffective. Master Plans: Francie, Bonnie, and Jim attended Dublin's July meeting. They collectively reported there will be more bike lanes in the city overall. The biggest issue concerning cyclists will be the widening of Dougherty Road and overall bike path improvement. Dublin will also completely revamp Amador Plaza Road by providing two new crosswalks. They will limit exiting Safeway's parking lot to a right turn only onto Amador Plaza Road. Peter mentioned there is a petition circulating on Mt. Diablo to change signage and to paint solid double lines on blind turns in order to encourage vehicles to pass cyclists safely. Danville Liaison and Mount Diablo Cyclist's President Alan Kalin gave a presentation on the petition he is circulating to bring awareness regarding the dangerous conditions cyclists face when riding Mt. Diablo. A few facts Alan presented included: there are between 130,000 - 150,000 cyclists that climb Mt. Diablo every year, there are 116 collision reports, there averages a collision on the mountain every 16 days with 70% of those collisions occurring on blind turns. Alan pointed out that there are many more accidents that go unreported (cyclists find alternative ways to get home). He has been meeting with park officials to encourage them to implement safety measures on the mountain. He, along with others, formed the Mount Diablo Cyclists Club in order to improve safety on Mt. Diablo. The mission of the Club is to encourage park officials to install flashing signs and to paint solid double lines on blind turns. The club can be found on Facebook as "Mount Diablo Cyclists" where there is a link to the petition they are circulating. The page also includes videos of close encounters with motorists on Mt. Diablo. Both Bonnie and Clay recommended that Alan also approach other bike clubs and bike shops in the area to help spread the word. In addition, Ken will put the link to the petition on the Valley Spokesmen website. Correspondence: Bonnie reported that Valley Spokesmen has received a lot of correspondence this month including: different riding events and tours that are available, organizations that are seeking funding, and organizations that have sent thank-you notes regarding our continued support of their efforts. Events or tours coming up include: California Dream Ride, Patriot Weekend, Pedal Tours, Edible Pedal, and 100 Mountains Coast to Coast. Organizations seeking funding include: Rails to Trails, Hope Hospice and Pacific Crest Trail. Bonnie has received thank-you notes from: Bike East Bay, and several other organizations where we've joined or renewed our membership. NEW BUSINESS Report from Organizational Task Force on Amendment of Articles and Bylaws: Clay had expected to receive the modified documents from our Attorney who drafted the Second Amendment and Restatement of the Bylaws. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the documents will be delayed. The documents should be received shortly, and, once received will be forwarded to the Board for review and approval. Once reviewed and approved, the documents will be available online for member review. Adopt Election Procedures: The attorney has reviewed the proposed election procedures. The election procedures will accompany the forthcoming documents with the Amended Bylaws.

Revisit Procedure and Protocol for Rider Violation of VS Standards for Safety: This issue was postponed until the September meeting. Mt. Diablo Challenge: Bonnie has 8 volunteers to assist in distributing water and food to riders participating in this event. She mentioned she needs two more. TOSRD: Francie reported that we are 1/3 sold out already and that Ken is doing a marvelous job with PayPal and with generating great reports. Francie will be mailing out post cards to past participants that are not Valley Spokesmen members. Francie is in need of more volunteers to work the Saturday afternoon food shift and the Sunday afternoon food shift. Livermore Sights and Sounds Parade: December 5 - Julie, via email, made a motion to contribute $500.00 to the Ondricek family for the Sights and Sounds Parade in December. Bonnie seconded the motion and the motion carried unanimously. December 5 is the date. It was recommended that dinner be hosted before the event. More details will follow as we get closer to the date. GPS and Route Training: Clay mentioned that Dianne would be interested in leading rides and would like to know how to create routes using GPS. Peter suggested that we create a team of trainers who will instruct users in creating routes. Peter recommended the following training team: Kevin, Ken, Peter, Alberto, and Dick Skow. Ken will set up a "Rides with Valley Spokesmen Account" on GPS. Dan suggested that routes be vetted prior to inclusion in the Valley Spokesmen account. To summarize, training will involve a three step process: recruit trainers, open VS account, and offer a training session. Cinderella Donations: Jim forwarded an email to the Board listing suggested causes to donate to. Bonnie made a motion to donate $750.00 to 30 different causes including a $1,500.00 donation to two different municipalities and a $3,000.00 donation to San Ramon Street Smarts. Peter seconded the motion subject to Jim and Bonnie providing a proposed list which will then be submitted to the Board. Dan moved we cap donations at $30,000. The Board voted unanimously to approve the donations subject to list approval and budget cap. GOOD OF THE ORDER Bonnie reported that Jean Watts is making great progress from serious injuries she sustained in a head-on collision last February. Jean is an 80 year old long term member who rode her bike everyday prior to the accident. September entertainment for the General Membership Meeting will consist of two elements. The Canadian adventure will be told by the four participants who joined in the three week long trek: Peter, Clay, Joe, and Bob Barnett, and Gary will recount his adventure on the Death Ride with Kathy. Ken will post a reminder of the Valley Spokesmen Anniversary BBQ this Sunday on the website.
