Our first important challenge is to complete the revision of our Lake Management Plan. Every four years we do a thorough water analysis of Lone Lake to determine the condition of the lake and also to plan what we will focus on in the areas of water quality, aquatic invasive species, fish and wildlife and planning and zoning for the next five years. Our Lake Management Plan then becomes the base of our goals to accomplish in the coming years. Our second challenge is to do a close examination of our LLPOA dues structure and to bring it into line with rising costs in water analysis, newsletter production, website site and hosting costs, and providing boat inspections beyond the major holiday weekends that are now conducted by lake volunteers. Welcome to the 2014 season Steve Frazier, LLPOA President:

Welcome back to another summer season on Lone Lake. Wow, wasn’t that a brutal winter with lots of snow! The LLPOA is ready for another great year on Lone Lake with a great line-up of lake association activities and events. Look for our calendar on page 4 of this newsletter. "

Our lake association has several important challenges this year to go along with all of the fun events around the lake. Our Lake Management Plan then becomes the base of our goals to accomplish in the coming years."

Our second challenge is to do a close examination of our LLPOA dues structure and to bring it into line with rising costs in water analysis, newsletter production, website site and hosting costs, and providing boat inspections beyond the major holiday weekends that are now conducted by lake volunteers. Importantly members need to understand these financial aspects of the association because it is the members that need to enact any dues changes at the annual meeting. Our dues have been $15 for over a decade and it is time to give a dues increase serious analysis and consideration."

" The third challenge is the lake outlet on the north end of the lake and probably the most controversial. Lake levels are always controversial because water levels affect properties differently

around the lake. The culvert at the outlet was set by the DNR and even that is controversial as some think it is too high while others feel it is correct. However when lake residents decide to take matters into their own hands it becomes a challenge that the lake association needs to deal with.Last fall it was discovered that manmade cement rocks/boulders had been dumped into the outlet to artificially keep the lake level high and block the culvert. The DNR was consulted and is monitoring the situation. They will ticket and fine offenders for illegally dumping to obstruct a waterway. The association’s goal will be to determine if the culvert is at the correct elevation and to work with lake residents to honor the lake level elevation to protect all of the lake owners’ property rights."

We have some good challenges ahead to work on. To have open dialogue is healthy and important to our lake community. Now let’s get on with having some fun in the sun and we’ll talk more as summer progresses."

Goodbye Dear Friends Roger and Fran Lillehei both passed away this last fall and winter. Roger Lillehei died on Nov. 14, 2013 five days after suffering a stroke. His son, Randy, Lot 18, said, “You have no idea how he loved Lone Lake and the people he and Mom got to know up there over the years. At least he had a good 26 years after retirement. Thanks for your friendship to the my folks.” On March 21st Fran Lillehei passed away. Randy said, “We believe her health decline had a lot to do with the loss of our Dad, Roger the previous November. She also loved the lake and cabin -- many, many great memories. She was always happy to be there with all you folks around the lake, and was one of the most patient fisher-ladies I ever knew.” Both Fran and Roger were active in the LLPOA and great friends to many of us around the lake. "

We also said goodbye to Byron Lundeen who died March 6, 2014. Byron served on the LLPOA board of directors, and was a member of the plumbers union, Westside Church in Aitkin and Aitkin Habitat for Humanity. Byron enjoyed an array of hobbies: socializing with friends over coffee and a donut, auctions, junk collecting, helping others, horses, sailing, beekeeping and most of all — spending time with his grandchildren.

Boat Inspectors: Training Set June 7

If you are a current inspector or wish to become one, you are required to participate in DNR-led training sessions. The local session, held jointly with ACLARA, will be on Sat., June 7 at Hazelton Township Hall, 24248 U.S. Highway 169 (4 miles south of Farm Island Store). DNR regulations require that boat inspectors attend training each year to stay certified. To register call Walt Weisser at 218-927-3214 or dwonlone@yahoo.

For more information, contact Walt Weisser or Linda Syzmanski, AIS Team Lead, at [email protected].

Walt Weisser and Pat Humphreys place the new loon platform on the frozen lake in hopes a loon pair will find it a good place to nest.

The ice will be out very soon…"

What can cabin owners do to protect the lake from invasive species? Here are some steps to take!"Spring is here. The ice will be off the lake soon. It will be time for everyone to participate in protecting the lake from Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). You may ask, “What can I do?” Below are a few steps each cabin owner or lake guest can take to protect the lake."

Trailer Rental / Pontoon Launch "

o Many users rent trailers to launch their pontoons. While the pontoon may have been out of the water all winter, do you know what lake the pontoon trailer was last in and when? If you rent a trailer to launch your pontoon, please inspect it for invasive species. An additional safety measure, take a few minutes and run the trailer through the car wash at the Aitkin Laundromat. "

New/Used Lake Equipment – Boats, Docks, Lifts, etc."

o Will you be purchasing lake equipment? If you have purchased lake equipment from a private party on another lake, allow the equipment dry for two weeks before installing in the lake."

Guests Visiting "

o Do you have guests visiting who will bring up watercraft? Please ask them to inspect their watercraft thoroughly. "

o An updated chart of all known Minnesota waters with invasive species is posted on our web site at http://www.minnesotawaters.org/group/lonelake/invasive-species. Ask your guests what lake or river they were last in. If the lake or river is on the list, please ask them to power wash their equipment or run it through the car wash at the Aitkin Laundromat. "

AIS Education"

o Familiarize yourself with the AIS inspection procedures and the invasive species. Read the newsletters and review the Lone Lake POA Facebook page and Website for additional information."

Boat Inspection

Volunteer for one three hour shift on the holiday weekends. Make it a family event to educate the children. Lone Lake did not have enough inspectors to cover the holiday weekends. We need your help."

To keep Lone Lake safe from the spread of invasive species remember to “Clean-Drain-Dry”:"

Clean—inspect closely and remove all plants, animals, and mud (it is the law)"

Drain—drain spaces or items that can hold water (it is the law) "

Dry—dry boats for five days or more before launching in other waters (recommended)"
