PTA’s 2nd Annual Jog-a-Thon on Friday, Oct. 3 was a huge success. Garfield students showed incredible determination, jogging 2,620 laps around the school block, or 873 miles. That’s about the distance from Colorado to Minnesota. Kindergarten through second-grade students jogged for 45 minutes. Third- through fifth-graders jogged for an hour. On top of all this wonderful exercise, we raised about $6,000 for our school and playground. First-grader Levi Donaldson earned the most donations -- $250 -- and won an iPad. Fourth-grader Julia Ward was the second-highest earner and won an iPod Nano. Autum Morehead, also a fourth-grader, won an iPod Shuffle as the third-highest earner. All children who earned a donation will receive a prize from PTA. Students got ice cream treats courtesy of TCBY at an afternoon awards assembly. Mrs. Thomas’s third-grade class ran the most laps -- 262. Ms. Strid’s fourth- graders were the highest-earning class with $890 and will get a free recess. Letter from the Principal

We have had a busy and productive first month of school!  Students in grades K-5 have completed flags as part of our LISA focus on Constitution/Citizenship Day, Kindergarten has gone on a field trip to a local museum, and our after-school clubs of Choir and Band are in full swing.  Last month, I saw many of our families enjoying our wonderful PTA Fall Carnival and students had a wonderful morning of fitness at our 2nd annual school Jog-a-Thon on Oct. 3.

During my visits to classrooms I see students who are excited about learning and who are challenging themselves to push for excellence in all subject areas.  It is exciting to watch our teachers work with students on our new Math Expressions program, engage students in literature during small group instruction, and foster critical thinking through classroom discussions.

As a school community we appreciate your help at home in promoting and fostering excitement and interest in learning.  I would like to encourage you to read nightly with your children:  it is just as important for you to read to them as it is for them to read to you.  If you need help or ideas on books that your children might enjoy hearing read aloud, please feel free to stop by our library and talk to our school librarian, Christie Alban.  Remember also that we have started a Birthday Book Club and are asking students to bring a new book to donate to the library in lieu of treats or snacks for the classroom.  Snacks are consumed quickly but donating books will leave a lasting legacy as your child will have their name in the book on a special nameplate.

Since our focus is on the whole child, we want to make sure that our students are healthy and well-rested for each school day.  You can help by making sure that your child gets at least 8 hours of sleep each night, eats a good breakfast in the morning, and has a healthy lunch each day full of lean protein, complex carbs, fruits and vegetables.  Please remember that we are here to support you and offer free/reduced breakfast and lunch opportunities for families in need of assistance.  If you need more information about our school breakfast/lunch program, please stop by the front office and talk with Rosanne, our school secretary, or by the cafeteria and talk with Jennifer, our lunch room coordinator.

If you have not yet joined PTA it is not too late:  you may drop off the $7.00 membership fee in the front office.  Don't forget to check our school/PTA website for the latest updates on school events and activities.

Thank you for your continued support of our school and our PTA.  We are grateful for all of our parent and community volunteers who so generously give of their time and talents.  Garfield continues to thrive because of your commitment to excellence.

Gratefully,

Karen BriskiPrincipal

How to reach your PTA

Greetings from our President

The first full month of school has flown by! It has been a wonderful school year so far. Your PTA has even more planned for the upcoming months, and we couldn’t be more excited. We kicked off October with a successful 2nd annual Jog-A-Thon. Thank you to all of our families who came out in support of the students to help cheer them on. I would also like to thank all of our Garfield families, as we had much more participation in fundraising this year than last. Lisa Javernick and Shawn Waaler were the chairpersons for this event -- without them none of this would have taken place. Thank you two very much! Our first Grizzly Pool Plunge of the year will be Oct. 11 at the TVHS pool from 1-3. We look forward to seeing our families for a few hours of play! At the October PTA meeting our superintendent, Dr. Stan Scheer will be joining us, we look forward to meeting with him, and I hope that all of you are able to make this meeting. The meeting will be held Monday, October 13th, at 6:45 p.m. in the library. Babysitting will be provided for children. Later this month, we will also kick off our Reflections program. Sponsored by National PTA, the program encourages students to explore and be involved in the arts.

Why Should Schools Care About Skin Cancer?Cancer of the skin is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States and perhaps the most preventable. Melanoma and non-melanoma cancers, including basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer, account for as much as 50 percent of all cancers. This year, we are kicking off our SunWise Campaign to educate our families about the importance of sun safety and skin cancer prevention. As part of these efforts, we are working to incorporate shade into our playground. Our PTA planted six trees last month, which will eventually provide much-needed shade. We will also be applying for shade grants. Watch for SunWise tips and activities on our website, in the school hallways, in PE class and in this monthly newsletter.

Greetings from Garfield’s L.I.S.A. Coordinator

We are so excited for some big events headed to Garfield this month! Our first event will be a production by the CSU Performing Arts entitled, “The Amazing Food Detective.” This assembly will be for our kindergarten through third-grade students. The performance is an interactive and engaging performance teaching students about health, nutrition, and exercise. Our second event is an all school performance by The Fabulous Chinese Acrobats.  The acrobats will combine astounding feats of skill, focus, and athleticism with teaching moments of Chinese culture, language, and history.

LISA students from Garfield Elementary, Bill Reed Middle School, and Mountain View High School participated in the community event Pastels on Fifth on Sept. 15. Students worked in conjunction to create a beautiful master piece based on the artwork of Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte.” The Mountain View art students created the grid and drawing outline for the younger Garfield students to follow. The students used the grid as a guideline to add color to the artwork. Bill Reed students followed to refine the artwork by adding shading, details, and blending. The collaboration between students was amazing!

In the Curio Cabinet this month we have the art work of Mr. Willy, our new art teacher. Mr. Willy is an accomplished sculptor with his favorite medium being metals. His artwork demonstrates the various processes used in working with metals, including reactive metals, “growing” metals, wax casting and hammering. Thank you, Mr. Willy, for sharing your talents with our students!

The Collection Box this month is hosted by the kindergarten students, who collected, sorted, and displayed items related to their study of the sun and seasons. They also found items in fall colors of orange, red, and yellow. The students counted and graphed their findings. Check it out!

Many art contests are occurring around our community. In the future, you can find out about arts opportunities on our school website.

Garfield Elementary would like to invite you to be a part of the Birthday Book Club!

The goal is to add good quality literature to our school library as well as to replace some well read favorites while celebrating a special occasion. It is designed to involve the children in a special way by having them donate a newly purchased hardcover book to the library in honor of their birthday, a friend or family member’s birthday or another special occasion.

There are two ways to participate:

1. Fill out the donation form and return to the Garfield Library with a $10.00 - $20.00 check payable to Garfield Elementary. Your special Grizzly will come to the library and choose a book from our selection. This option saves you a trip to the store and allows your child to pick something that has been specially chosen to supplement our library.

2. You may purchase a durable hardcover book that your child has chosen from a bookstore to donate to our library. Drop the book off at the front office with the donation form attached with your child’s information.

As a thank you, a bookplate will be placed inside the front cover of the book with your child’s name and birth date, or other special occasion being recognized. Your child will be the first to check out the book before it is added to our school library shelves for others to enjoy. The names of new Birthday Book Club members will be announced in the monthly issue of the Grizzly Growler. Each child that donates will be photographed holding their chosen book, and the photos will be displayed in the library for all to see. For book donation ideas, please check out our Library Book Wish List on our school website or contact Mrs. Alban at [email protected].

All donations are greatly appreciated and help expand our library! Thank You!

Book Character

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

This year the Garfield Library is getting into the fall spirit by having a pumpkin decorating contest of your favorite book character. It’s easy and fun for the whole family! Pumpkins must be dropped off on Monday, October 20th and go home during parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, October 23rd and Friday, October 24th.

Contest Rules: 1. Absolutely no carved pumpkins. Carved pumpkins rot, attract bugs and smell.

Most importantly, we do not want a child handling a knife or carving tools. Carved pumpkins will not be entered into the contest and will be sent back home. To decorate, you can use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, and other craft items on the pumpkin. Let your creativity soar!

2. Pumpkins should represent a favorite book character. On the entry form, you must include the book title and author. **I recommend getting the book information before you even begin decorating your pumpkin**

3. This is a home project and should be done mostly by the students but parents and family members may assist. ** Judges tend to vote more for projects where the student’s work is evident.

4. Families who have more that one student at GES may choose to enter the Family Project Category. This category is for any family that would like to submit one decorated pumpkin for the whole family or multiple pumpkins representing various characters in the SAME book.

5. Do not write your name anywhere on the pumpkin. When you bring your pumpkin into the library, Mrs. Alban will take your entry form information and identify your pumpkin properly for the contest.

6. Pumpkins will be judged for best decorating, according to the following categories:

K-1 2-3 4-5 Teacher/Staff Family Project 7. The K-5 grade level judging and family project judging will be conducted by a

panel of judges created by staff. Teacher/Staff category will be judged by students when they visit the library.

Prizes for top voted pumpkins per category: Winners will receive ribbons, bookmarks and $5 gift cards to TCBY.

Garfield Elementary PTA will kick off Reflections Oct. 28. National PTA's Reflections program encourages students in pre-K through grade 12 to explore and be involved in the arts.

Students will reflect on the theme “The World would be a better place if...” and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, photography and visual arts.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their artistic skills and receive recognition on a state and national level.

Atentamente,Karen Briski
