PTA’s 1st Annual Jog-a-Thon on Oct. 16 was a huge success. It was a beautiful fall day, and staff and students all agreed it was a fun day! Garfield students showed incredible determination, jogging 2,704 laps around the school block, which is 900 miles! And this was all in one morning!Kindergarten through second- grade students jogged for 45 minutes. Third- through fifth-graders jogged for an hour. And on top of all this wonderful exercise, we raised about $7,000 for our school and playground. First-grader Quinn Waaler earned the most donations -- more than $400 -- and will get to be assistant principal to Ms. Cook for a half day. Way to go Quinn! PTA would also like to thank the following businesses for their generous support: Fort Fun, The Lincoln Center, The Rialto Theater, Harrington Arts Academy, Barnes & Noble, Dallabetta’s Muse Coffee & Tea, Artisan You, Gateway Garden Center, Chilson Recreation Center, Justine’s Pizza Fort Collins, Midtown Arts Center, Sweetheart Lanes, Rocky Mountain Cyclery, International Black Belt Academy, Altitude Custom Signs, Circle Graphics, and Rocky Mountain Covering and Home Improvement. They provided prizes for our raffle drawing or donated money. See page 6 for top lap runners, class fundraising totals and more photos.

Letter from the Principal
Hello Garfield Families!
Well, it was wonderful to see everyone at Parent-Family Conferences last week. I hope you had the time and opportunity to have some good conversations with your child’s teacher(s), and that you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.
Our teachers and students have been working hard and doing amazing things each and every day at Garfield. We are proud of our students and their progress so far, and as we near the end of the first Trimester (November 15), I wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents, teachers, and staff at Garfield who make every day special!
Report cards will come home on November 22 and this is a great time to talk with your student about their academic progress, and about their social skills, and work habits at school. Strong work habits and social skills help children succeed at home, at school, and in the future. The following important social skills and study habits are part of the school report card, so please talk with your child about how they are doing in these areas.
Accepts responsibility for personal actionsIs courteous and respectful
Shows self-disciplineParticipates and contributes in class
Works well with othersListens to and follows directions
Completes workUses time wisely
Displays independence in work habitsHas materials available and ready
Maybe you could have your child score themselves on each of these behaviors, and then talk about why they scored themselves that way. Or, you could ask your student to act out or draw an example of each of these behaviors. Having children generate examples of behavior and skills is just one great way to help them learn!
There are lots of things going on this month. Check the Growler calendar for upcoming events at the end of the Trimester, such as picture retakes, the Thanksgiving Feast, the PTA Talent Show, and much more! And don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 3!
Happy fall! My favorite season of the year!

Greetings from Garfield’s L.I.S.A. Coordinator
Having a dual role at Garfield as the Speech-‐Language Pathologist, as well as the Arts Integration Coordinator, affords me the privilege of being in every classroom sometime during the week. I get to see children engrossed in their learning, and their thoughts and ideas coming to life through technology, music, drama, and visual arts. It is truly amazing, and I hope that as parents and family members you got to see some of this during conferences.
We are excited to welcome Artist in Residence Chris Bates, who will be working with a group of 3rd-‐, 4th-‐, and 5th-‐ grade students to create “phase two” of our mural project. Chris will be sharing his passion as a mural artist to inspire our students to develop and create an addition to the mural on the cottage. Over the next several weeks, he will be teaching the students how to develop a design by listening to ideas from teachers, parents, and other community members. They will then turn that design into a master plan, which will be graphed out onto large plywood pieces. Next, the students will follow their plan to create a beautiful addition to our school! Keep your eye out for a finished project in December.
In the month of October we had several opportunities for our students both here at Garfield and in the community. We had several students participate in the community event Pastels on Fifth, in which they worked together with the students from Bill Reed Middle School and Mountain View High School to create a pastel square. Not only did they get to make the square, but they also got the pleasure of seeing other local artists and community members working on their squares! The kindergarten students traveled to the Garbage Garage to learn about community helpers, as well as how to care for your environment with recycling. Our first-‐ and second-‐grade students were treated to a Bagpipe Band. They got to hear the bagpipes and see and hear about the traditions surrounding the bagpipes. The musicians wore traditional kilts and tams. The students learned that bagpipes are very loud! Our second-‐graders also traveled to The Loveland Museum to see the lovely landscape paintings. These students are learning about “setting” in their reading, and these paintings helped them visualize a variety of different settings from around the country. Our fourth-‐grade students walked to the Loveland Public Library to meet author Jeannie Mowbly, who is the author of several books about Colorado history. They were able to ask her questions about her research, and how she came up with the ideas for her books. Finally, the fifth-‐grade students ventured to Bobcat Ridge to study the geography of the region. They also learned about taking care of our natural resources. A very busy month for our students!
In the Curio Cabinet this month we have the amazing art of Dan Daggett, owner of Daggett Glass Studio in Loveland. He creates beautiful, original handblown art glass designs. He is well known for his blown glass vases, perfume bottles, bowls, creative paper weights, Christmas ornaments, glass sculptures, platters, and oil lamps. He also creates custom pieces. Mr. Daggett has 28 years of experience teaching glassblowing. He teaches beginning to advanced students in a large studio, one-‐on-‐one. Our fifth-‐grade students will be traveling to his studio to watch his process of changing glass into different forms, and from a molten state to a solid state. The Collection Box this month features work by our fifth-‐grade students. They have been studying the saturation and solubility levels of “mystery” solutions. They have learned that different solutions create many different types of crystals. Their collection is the result of their science experiments. They have also made amazing crystal sculptures in their art classes, which are on display in the Collection Box as well!

Letter from the Principal
Ms. Cook, [email protected]
