Lions Motto: WE SERVE District 11C1 Serves Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Muskegon & Ottawa Counties

In our district we currently have 37 Lions Clubs with a total of 959 members. This is not where we should be with the amount of work and activities we do for our communities. However the numbers should be higher. We all have work to do.

Membership At Lions Clubs International, We Serve. We have more volunteers in more places than any other service organization in the world (1.4 million members). While service is at the core of what every Lion does, being a Lion is also about leading your club, growing your club, and developing valuable skills that can help strengthen your club. The stronger your club is, the bigger an im-pact you will make in your local and global communi-ties. Just imagine how much more your Lions Club would accomplish if every Lion asked one person to join or even invite them to help with a Lions Club project.

Centennial Service Challenge: Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller and our communities get better. That's be-cause we as lions help where help is needed – in our own communities as well as around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. Many thanks go out to the Lions in our district who have participated in the Centennial Challenge. Keep up the good work. Where There's a NEED, There's a LION.

USA/Canada Forum A generous thank you to PID Gary and Lion Cheryl Anderson for their hard work in organizing our successful 2016 Forum. Lion Cheryl Schneider was one of the presenters at the Forum. Laugh for Your Health was the topic of her breakout secession and Lion Cheryl did an excellent job. Thank you Cheryl.

Once again many thanks to all of our hard work-ing Lions and may we continue to have a good year.

When it comes to meeting challenges, our response is simple: We serve.

In over 200 countries, in hospitals and senior centers, in regions battered by natural disaster, in schools and eyeglass re-cycling centers, Lions are doing community volunteer work, helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we're local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we're global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders.

Sight Programs

We want everyone to see a better tomorrow. That's why we support sight programs and services including vision screenings, eye banks and eyeglass recycling. Provide eye care services to those at risk of losing their sight. And raise do-nations through campaigns like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II.

Health Programs

We believe everyone deserves a healthy life. From providing health programs that focus on hearing loss to supporting efforts to control and prevent diabetes, Lions volunteers are working to improve the health of children and adults around the world.

Youth Volunteer Opportunities

We empower the next generation. Whether it's providing youth volunteer opportunities and leadership experiences in a Leo club or sharing a message of peace through our Peace Poster contest, our youth programs invest in the future by reaching out to young people.

Community and Environment Programs

We serve local communities – and protect the planet. From performing hands-on community work and service projects to providing emergency assistance, our community and environment programs improve our communities – and protect the environment.

Disaster Relief

We are among the first to respond when disaster strikes. Our Disaster Preparedness and Relief Programs enable Lions to help local communities – and contribute to Lions relief efforts in other countries – in the event of a natural, man-made or healthcare emergency.

PEACE POSTER JUDGING:

Entries from District 11C-1 for the Peace Poster Contest

will be judged November 15 at the Region 2 Fall Meeting in

Rockford at the Community Cabin. The winning entry for our

district will be then be sent on to be judged at the multiple district

level by December 1st. On December 15 posters will be forward-

ed to International Headquarters where they will be judged with

winners notified February 1st.

This year’s theme is A Celebration of Peace.

LCIF DISASTER RELIEF ONGOING:

When disaster strikes, LCIF continues to be a beacon of hope.

Hurricane Matthew has been dubbed the worst hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean since 2005 and has currently affected many areas in the US & Caribbean leaving people without roads, drinking water, food, and shelter. LCIF has already awarded an initial Emergency Grant to Lions and Leos Clubs in Haiti from Port au Prince to Petit Goave enabling them to pack and distribute 2,000 relief kits of food and medicine. Another Grant has been awarded to Lions in North Carolina.

In August torrential rains led to flooding in Louisiana. LCIF answered with two $10,000 Emergency Grants and a $100,000 Major Catastrophic Grant.

Days later a massive earthquake struck central Italy. LCIF responded with another $100,000 Major Catastrophic Grant.

Show your support by donating to the LCIF Disaster Relief Fund.

International Convention.

Tryouts for the tour to Chicago will be held Sunday, Oc-tober 22 at Ovid-Elsie High School, 8989 E. Colony Road, Elsie, MI 48831. Additional information on registration can be found on the Lions of Michigan website. Percussion and visual performers can either join us on October 22nd or they can send a video of their performance. The poster on the previous page was mailed to over 1,200 band directors around the state. We would greatly appreciate if you would share these posters with your club as a way of spreading the word about our band. Our goal is to have 100 members for the 100th anniversary of Lions!

This year’s tour cost is is $1595 and includes travel and hotel costs, meals, admissions, a travel uniform and a three day band camp. This year we will also be including all of

the band members into the newly formed LMASB Leo club.

Some 300 lions put together 100,000 meals for the needy of Omaha in five hours as one of two service pro-jects Saturday afternoon at the Forum. Leos Day was also Saturday so they could also take part in the service projects.

There was also a mini eye glass recycling center set up in the Century Link Convention Center where 6,000 used eyeglasses were cleaned, categorized and boxed. Supplies and equipment to conduct the center were driven to Omaha by Grand Rapid Lions Jean Kraai and Gail Junod.

Chaired by PID Gary Anderson, with help from wife, lion Cheryl, this year’s Forum saw attendance of more than 2,000 lions from around the world. A two mile Stride Walk took place between sessions at lunch at the Forum promoting Diabetes Awareness.

Some 60 educational sessions took place on a variety of subjects pertinent to all Lions including many Lions University topics. One breakout session featured Mus-kegon Northside’s Lion Chery Schneider with her Laugh for Your Health program.

All seminar information could be accessed by a PAW technology developed by Poken which every lion re-ceived. PAWs could be plugged into any computer to download session content from the Poken website or to trade or exchange contact information with other attendees.

Be sure to log on to lionsforum.org and take a few Lions University courses developed by Lion leaders to “develop leaders and provide support programs for lions based on the goals of LCI.”

OPEN HOUSE

October 14

Rochester Hills, MI

The recently renovated Canine Development

Center at Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester

Hills has definitely gone to the dogs. But what a

way to go!

The $14.5 million Center, four years in the

making, now houses the canine villages, breeding

center and veterinary clinic which features a state of

the art system which can provide x-ray film images

for viewing in as little as eight seconds. The canine

villages also feature two rooms with one for sleep-

ing and the other for playing and socializing in.

With $2 million of that $14.5 million coming

from Lions Clubs, the non profit organization em-

ploys 150 staff, has 1000 volunteers who train al-

most 450 dogs a year of which only about half be-

come guide dogs.

“Like Navy Seals, we only want the best of

the best,” said CEO Sue Daniels. “Dogs who don’t

make it through the program become service dogs

with other organizations.” Those dogs who do

make it are placed with visually impaired or blind for

free, but can cost up to $40,000.

While German Shepherds account for about

five per cent of the dogs who go through the train-

ing, the most common mix of Golden Retrievers

crossed with Labrador Retrievers are bred to be

smaller to fit under tables and other spaces easily .

Between the first Open House in September

and the second in October, International President

Chancellor Bob Corlew, First Lady Dianne, PID Esther

LaMothe and ID Jenny Ware visited the facilities

September 30th.

Presentation: Eversight Michigan –

Making Vision a Reality & Peace Poster Judging

Guest speaker, Alison Claerhout Wright, Community Engagement Manager for Eversight

Michigan.

Eversight Michigan was founded in 1957 with a man’s dying wish: to donate his eyes so that others may see. That wish united University of Michigan ophthalmologist John W. Henderson, M.D., Ph.D., with Lions Clubs across the state to create a way for people to give the precious gift of sight – and the Michigan Eye-Bank was born. Alison will also be introducing a donor family.

This is your meeting and it’s open to all club mem-bers. The evening includes a complimentary dinner, desserts and a cash bar in a casual atmosphere.

THANK YOU, THORNAPPLE! Monday night, Oct, 10, the small, but mighty THORNAPPLE LIONS CLUB brought us in to update them on THE SIGHT SEER story!

What a pleasure it was to review our progress with such a supportive group. Questions/discussions roamed the areas of ex-panding our service to the north, our success in opening a SIGHT SEER TV Channel in “next door” Porter Hills Retirement Village, SIGHT SEER finances and volunteer opportunities.

A totally volunteer organization, THE SIGHT SEER reads for those who cannot – and these numbers are growing as Macular De-generation and Diabetes take their toll on our aging ”BOOMER GEN-ERATION.” The need exists – and that need meets Helen Keller’s 1926 challenge to YOU and your club to be “KNIGHTS FOR THE BLIND!!”

Do a “THORNAPPLE!” Bring THE SIGHT SEER to your next club meeting. Be a “KNIGHT” and bring THE SIGHT SEER to your com-munity’s Vision Impaired.

GVSU CAMPUS LIONS:

It’s that time of year again as GVSU Campus Lions plan to

volunteer at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids October 28

from 9:30 till 3. Cost is $8 per person to come dressed to

the Zoo Goes Boo event. To receive treats, enjoy live en-

tertainment, special animal demos and see the zoo decked

out the last two weekends in October for Halloween.

HOLTON TWIN LAKE: Holton Twin Lake Lions held another eye screening in con-

junction with the Dalton Township Fire Department’s Open

House October 12. There was food, fun, fire safety and of

course fire fighters and their trucks.

es again for $15 a dozen with Boy Scouts delivering.

it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if

they were great and noble.”

LAKEWOOD LIONS:

It may have a lot of nuts and calories, but nothing can beat the

taste of fresh buttery, peanut brittle. If you like it as much as I

do then contact Bill Sutton at [email protected] to

order your very own. They started cooking and pouring this

year’s batch October 8th.

LYONS MUIR:

toured the canine facilities at Leader Dogs for the Blind in

Rochester Hills.

MARNE:

Marne Lions are busy making preparations for Halloween at

the Tallmadge Fire House.

MSU CAMPUS LIONS:

The relatively new formed MSU Campus Lions Club were up

to their elbows in pumpkins guts helping out at the Apple But-

ter Festival October 8. The club has been also been fundrais-

ing by selling coupon books with savings in the East Lansing

Area for $25 a book. Half the proceeds go back to the club. If

you are interested go to the MSU Campus Lions Facebook

page, hit the attached site https://

docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSeDEILmDRY62HoLN0…/

viewform to fill out a form to order a book if you are not in the

immediate area. Campus lions assure that after a few uses

the savings will pay for the book.

MUSKEGON EASTSIDE:

Muskegon Eastside—like many of the rest of us—held a Texas

Hold ‘Em tournament at Westgate Bowl, at the end of Septem-

ber.

MUSKEGON NORTHSIDE:

It’s purely a labor of love for Northside Lions to serve others. It was seen when they showed their appreciation by serving a pancake breakfast to law enforcement officers September 14. That breakfast was inspired by Dallas Police Officer Mi-chael Krol—son of Northside Lion Frank Krol—who was one of five killed with another nine injured in a conflict in July. Northside appreciation could be seen again mid September as banners were hung to commemorate local military on the Causeway . The club’s latest labor of love is the installation of playground equipment at Mullally Park during the first week of October for kids to enjoy.

RAVENNA:

Ravenna Lions held their

annual steak fry October 5th

with many surrounding clubs

coming to enjoy the social

festivities and mouth watering

steak and sides. Many win a

prize like Rockford’s Lion

Dianna Robach (above).

ROCKFORD:

Rockford Lions have

been very visible in their

community the last few

weeks. They were serv-

ing in a different sense

with six great beers on

tap in the Lions Beverage

Tent and six great bands

on stage September 23 and 24 at the Rockford Harvest

Fest . Then another Lions crew were out cleaning up North-

land Drive to keep their city beautiful October 9. Then the

yellow vests and club tee shirts were out in full force over the

October 14th and 15th weekend collecting for White Cane

with a goal of $10,000 in 10 years. Last year, the club col-

lected $6,300 to fund their good works.

THE FAMILY TEAM:

From September 11 to 16 the Carlson family along represented their Lions family traveling to Jamaica to provide medical eye exams and glasses to the local population in need. Lion Richard Carlson, with his wife Joan (center) and son Kevin represented the Muskegon Northside Lions while son and optometrist Lion Adam hails from the Grand Rapids Internet Club with the family as a whole representing the Li-ons Of Michigan in general. They teamed up with the ISSA Trust Foundation to conduct eye exams for 836 kids over the course of five days with about 80 of the children tested re-quiring glasses.
