While some would deem this weather to be ‘unstable’, and ‘uncalled’ for, it certainly calls for exploring this island before the scorching sun makes it difficult to do so. And one way is to gather a few friends and head out on foot to know the island’s cultural richness; much like Amal Al Saffar did recently, organizing a Manama cultural walk with a multinational group. “The idea was to show some special parts of Manama to people who aren’t familiar and it’s a good initiative by young local Bahrainis,” Amal shared. The route of the walk started from the Water Garden in Gufool; a special garden that Amal feels every Bahraini holds precious childhood memories with. “We are talking about an era when technology was less, social media didn’t exist and entertainment and big malls were limited. The place was a must every weekend.” Behind the garden, the group stopped at a traditional Bahraini bakery that makes special bread with fish oil (Mehyawa), zattar and Arabic herbs and cheese. They continued the walk towards Manama central market (fish and vegetables) which was a surprise for many. “We got to see bulks of fruits and vegetables, freshly delivered before even supplied to small stores and supermarkets. The prices were much cheaper than hypermarkets and that encouraged people who were with me to buy their groceries from there henceforth,” Amal shared but also expressed her disappointment over the disorganization of the place. She hopes that governmental institutions will develop the market and support the local traders and the business supervision. After that, they walked towards Manama souq, passing by the oldest hotel in Bahrain:“Bahrain Hotel”, which was owned by the Culture Authority in the recent years and Amal hopes that there are development plans for it as well. The walk also included some religious stops such as a Jewish synagogue, Al-Fadel mosque, Krishna temple and the Sacred Heart Church. This was a special added value to show that Bahrain has always been a welcoming hub for all cultures and beliefs. The trip couldn’t be done without food, and the group stopped at ‘Hajji Coffee shop’, an old place in Manama that serves traditional Bahraini breakfast including Mahyawa bread, balaleet, and scrambled eggs with Arabic seasoning. They also stopped at Khalaf, which represents the typical Manama house with its wooden windows, balcony and door. Starting at 7am, the walk ended at 2 pm (17 km in total), engaging culture, history, religion, tradition and golden stories. “I really hope that young ones do more of this kind of cultural exploration with their friends and visitors coming to Bahrain; it would hold more value if coming from the locals themselves” Amal shared. Pakistan Day is a national holiday to commemorate the Lahore Resolution of 1940 and the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan which led to the nation becoming the first Islamic Republic in the world. Much of it is owed to the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who founded Pakistan and led it until his death in 1948. Since then, the land of unique music and art held its own and has managed to capture the world with its vibrant culture, rich literature, soulful music, fascinating cities and picturesque landscapes. Home to the world’s oldest civilization, Mohenjo- Daro, Pakistan today hosts the highest paved international road in the world, the Karakoram Highway which links Pakistan to China. Its striking and serene sceneries from the Gwadar Port are often referred to as utopia. Many legendary musicians such as Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen and Ghulam Ali were brought to the world by the grains of Pakistan’s soil. The car struck pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, a popular spot with tourists because of its views of Big Ben, before crashing into the railings outside the heavily guarded parliament building in the heart of the British capital. “At least one man, armed with a knife, continued the attack and tried to enter parliament,” Britain’s top counter-terror official Mark Rowley told reporters. Rowley said the three victims included the police officer and two people who died on the bridge. “We are treating this as a terrorist incident,” police said in a statement. The attack comes with Europe on high alert after a series of deadly assaults and a year to the day after Islamic State jihadists killed 32 people in two bomb attacks in Brussels. Britain’s allies reacted with shock to the attack and vowed to stand with London in the fight against terror. In July 2005, four British suicide bombers inspired by Al-Qaeda attacked London’s transport system during rush hour, killing 52 people. Prime Minister Theresa May, who was in parliament at the time, was ushered away in a silver car as what sounded like gunfire rang out, British media reported. Her Downing Street office said she was “safe” and was due later to chair an emergency meeting of top security ministers at her London residence. “The thoughts of the prime minister and the government are with those killed and injured in this appalling incident, and with their families,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said in a statement. “The prime minister is being kept updated.” Three French pupils on a school trip were among those injured and a seriously injured woman was rescued from the Thames River following the incident. Five South Korean tourists were also hurt, the Yonhap news agency reported. A doctor at nearby St Thomas’ Hospital said they were treating people with “catastrophic” injuries. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said in a video statement: “The government’s top priority is the security of its people and I urge everyone to remain calm.” The parliament building was immediately sealed off and MPs and staff ordered to remain inside. Hundreds of people were later evacuated from parliament to nearby Westminster Abbey and the London Metropolitan Police headquarters, while the local Westminster Underground station was closed. Police cordoned off a large area in Westminster and tourists on the London Eye, a popular tourist attraction, were stuck 135 metres (443 feet) in the air during the incident. “I saw three bodies lying on the ground and a whole lot of police. It was pretty terrifying,” said Jack Hutchinson, 16, from Boston in the United States who was stranded on the London Eye with his parents. Action sought against illegal occupation of public spacesHarpreet Kaur/[email protected]

Manama

Residents in different parts of the capital have demanded

strong action against people who are illegally occupying public parking spaces.

“The residents in our area have more than two vehicles and they are reserving most of the spaces meant for parking. Previously, the Municipality had taken some action but the illegal occupation is continuing,” said a resident near Al Raja School who did not want to be identified.

“The parents who come to drop their kids to school face a lot of inconvenience due to illegal reservation of

public spaces and if anyone parks their cars in that area, the next morning we would find our vehicles damaged,

tyres punctured or our cars scratched with sharp tools. Our area has just become unsafe to most of the residents because

this happens overnight and we still don’t know who is behind this, “ the resident said.

“I spent almost BD150 recently because someone scratched my car. Our area is increasingly becoming unsafe. We really thank DT for raising the issue of illegal reservation of public parking spaces,” the resident said, referring to the busting of an illegal parking racket by police after a report appeared in DT on Monday.

“A few expats on road 425, Area 304 next to Oriental Press are creating a huge nuisance to residents by occupying public spaces. I personally

don’t have an issue with them but I have kids and they are being affected,” said another resident, adding these expats

have placed their thermocol coolers to store and clean their fish with the result that the whole area is now stinking and is filled with flies.

“Not only the car of an individual blocks the parking space for the entire building but also all his vehicles moves in that area. I have complained to the municipality a lot of times but there was no response. When we try to explain the people who are illegally blocking the public space they threaten us or damage our vehicles,” the resident said.

Bangladeshi man found deadHarpreet Kaur/DTNN [email protected]

A Bangladeshi man was found dead in

his apartment at Naim in Manama. Humayun Barbor, 30, a free visa labourer, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at around 9:00 am, said his nephew Jahangir Mohammed.

“I was the first one to enter the house at 9:00am, and I found him hanging on the fan. He was my mother’s brother and was not having a legal visa for the past three years,” Jahangir said.

He hanged on his wife’s stoles, which he had brought

from Bangladesh when he came to Bahrain.

Jahangir, who is a vegetable vendor in Bahrain, said he

learnt from Humayun’s mother that he had a fight with his wife the day he committed suicide over suspected affair with another person, which is assumed to be the reason for the suicide.

One of the housemates informed the police about the suicide, and according to them, the police have sealed the apartment for further procedures.

The Ministry of Interior, however, issued a statement later in the day confirming the incident and on instructions being given to the concerned authorities to take necessary steps.

Some people are reserving most of the spaces meant for public parking,

causing inconvenience to public in the capital region. Though the

Municipality has taken some action, the illegal occupation is continuing with the public demanding strong

Several archeological discoveries were made

in different parts of Bahrain during the past twelve months.

Gold pieces, graves, coffins and ancient writings, aging back to 2200BC, were found in sites including Wadi Al Sail, Karbabad, Karrana, Abu Saiba’a, Malkiya and Aali.

This was unfolded during a lecture yesterday organised by Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) at Bahrain National Museum as part of the Kingdom’s archaeological celebrations this year under the project of “Our Year of Archaeology”.

Archaeological Affairs Counselor Dr Pierre Lombard said the discoveries were made by the four archaeology teams from Japan, Denmark, France and BACA currently working in Bahrain.

“The main discoveries were found in Aali, Qal’at Al Bahrain site (Bahrain Fort), Malkiya and Hillat Abdul Saleh near Karranah village,” Dr. Lombard said.

“They included a Tylos cemetery in Malkiya, built above a potters’ production site from the late Dilmun

period, a unique coffin-cemetery in Hillat Abdul Saleh from the same period, first cuneiform text to be found in Bahrain that goes back to the first millennium BC in Qala’t Al Bahrain and an exceptional epigraphic discovery in Aali,” said Dr. Lombard.

Dilmun is an ancient civilisation that lived on the island in the last three millenniums BC, and Tylos is the ancient Greek name of Bahrain.

The archaeologist said that more excavations are being carried out in several sites, promising more discoveries in the near future. He also reviewed some of the recent discoveries made in Bahrain with the audience and answered their questions and queries.

The Embassy of Italy and the United Nations in

Bahrain celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome on Tuesday. The event was held in cooperation with the EU delegation in Riyadh, in the framework of a worldwide calendar of events promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Government officials, ambassadors from more than 15 countries, entrepreneurs, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and representatives of the media, attended the function held at UN House in Hoora.

The foundations for the Europe that we know today were laid Sixty years ago in

Rome, ushering in the longest period of peace in written history in Europe.

The Treaties of Rome - signed on March 25, 1957 by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany - established a common market where people, goods, services and capital can

move freely and created the conditions for prosperity and stability for European citizens.

While the immediate objectives of the Treaties of Rome were to integrate trade and strengthen European economies, one of the underlying political desires of the Treaty was to ‘lay the foundations of an ever-closer union among the people of Europe’.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, gave welcome remarks to the public, emphasizing the alignment between the principles behind European integration and those that underlie the United Nations Charter.

“The Rome Treaties and the United Nations were formed

under the same principles: to secure peace, stability, and rule of law leading to the development and prosperity of the countries and its people,” stated the UN Coordinator.

For 60 years an enlarged Europe has built a Union that promotes peaceful cooperation, respect of human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality and solidarity, making the European Union is a living example of successful regional integration, one that managed to put aside rivalries to forge a common path towards peace, stability, with inclusion, improved livelihoods and economic and social prosperity.

“On this anniversary, Europe looks back with pride and looks forward with hope, aware of challenges ahead

– from economic crisis to international instability – and of the need to further strengthen the European path to address them,” said Domenico Bellato, Ambassador of Italy in Bahrain.

In the Kingdom of Bahrain, we are fortunate enough to have excellent relations with

the EU and all its members, and we are in no doubt of the value of the European project in spreading peace, prosperity and development,” said Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Get ready for Spartan Race

Mohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Manama

Over 7000 people are expected to attend

when the XDubai Spartan Race returns to Bahrain next month, organisers said yesterday.

The race, proclaimed as the ‘The World’s Best Obstacle Race’ will be held on April 14. With the whole of Bahrain International Endurance Village in Sakhir as its venue, the race will be bigger and

more exciting than last year’s, organizers said. It will include a few surprises, they said. The race will feature ‘Spartan Sprint’, which will be 5+ KM race packed with more than 20 obstacles. ‘Spartan Super’, a 13+ KM race with over 25 obstacles will also be held. Organisers have also confirmed a ‘Spartans Kids’ race for children between the ages of 4 and 15.

“We are bringing new challenges and various surprises. We will not only have the sprint race but also

a longer one. Participants can expect to see new obstacles that they have not seen before.” Michael Calahora, a member of the organising committee said during a press conference yesterday.

“We are expecting 7000 people to be there, including the audiences. Since we are expecting more participants and audiences, the venue will be bigger. Last year we had half of the endurance village for the event but this year we will have the whole of the endurance village,” he said.

The Capital Municipal Council that held its

meeting yesterday at the Ministry of Municipalities Hall, Manama, discussed bills and proposals numbering to six.

The 19-member council was chaired by Mohammed Ali Alkhozaae, Chairman of the Capital of Municipal Council.

According to Jasim Redha,

The other item was a bill on changing the zoning of Hoora area, which was passed by the council. The proposal on establishing a hotline for the expats to use in times of

emergencies was dropped as the council found that there was already a facility on the egovernment website.

The proposal to put up food stalls in parks on holidays was temporarily declined as it would contradict the existing laws of the Ministry of Health, and because there were no provisions to confirm the quality of the food being served at the stalls, said Jasim Redha.

Everyone has read the classic fairy tale, Sleeping

Beauty, about a princess who falls into a deep sleep for hundreds of years. Doctors at Aster Medcity in Kochi found a real life ‘Sleeping Beauty’ when a 4-year-old girl was diagnosed with an ultra rare sleeping disorder known as Kleine-Levin syndrome. She is the youngest patient in the world to be diagnosed with this disorder which is also known as ‘Sleeping Beauty’ syndrome. This is an extraordinarily rare neurological disorder with only around 1-2 cases per million people.

Liya was born after six years of marriage through in-vitro fertilization. Much loved by her parents, the only concern in an otherwise normal childhood was a delay in her speech which started occurring as she turned three. In October 2016, she started crying and getting irritable without any reason. This was followed by an episode of unconsciousness where she was unresponsive for more than 24 hours. After regaining consciousness, she was confused and aloof. Suspecting epilepsy, the doctors started anti-convulsive medication. But despite this, she had eight episodes in four months. She was hospitalized at other hospitals thrice but the problem was not diagnosed.

Dr. Akbar Mohammad Chettali , Paediatric Neurologist at Aster Medcity

said, “Liya was brought to the emergency in Aster Medcity for the first time on 16th February after a sudden episode of unconsciousness, where she was found to be deeply comatose and having very low heart rate and breathing. Continuous EEG monitoring ruled out non-convulsive epileptic state. After investigations that ruled out other suspected conditions that can cause prolonged unconsciousness, the child was found to be in deep sleep with poor responsiveness lasting almost for 5 days. This was confirmed by Polysomnography, a sleep study that records brain waves, the oxygen level in blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements

and is used to diagnose sleep disorders. The results of the sleep study suggested prolonged REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. After further investigations and discussions across specialities, the condition was diagnosed as the rare disease ‘Kleine Levin syndrome’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty disorder’.”

Two-thirds of the affected patients are male. Patients with this disorder are usually teenagers with symptoms starting during adolescence. Liya is the youngest known case of the Sleeping Beauty syndrome. In the Kleine Levin syndrome, the patient goes into deep sleep that can last from many hours to many days at a time. In Liya’s case, she used to fall asleep for five

days at a time. As in Liya’s case, the sleep state is usually preceded by a period of irritable and abnormal behaviour.

Dr.Akbar Mohammad Chettali , Paediatric Neurologist said, “An interesting finding from the patient’s history was unexplained psychiatric illness with prolonged coma and unexplained death in maternal grandmother at an young age, which could have been from the same Kleine Levin syndrome. The child psychiatry consultation also confirmed the diagnosis of Kleine Levin syndrome. Subsequently the child was started on medication that included neuroleptics, mood stabilizers and stimulants. She showed good response to treatment, staying awake and feeding well.”

While the frequency of the sleep attacks are known to decrease with increasing age, the parents were counselled regarding the recurring nature of illness and the need to be compliant with the medication over a long duration. Sleep hygiene, that is, habit of sleeping well on a regular basis was emphasized.

Denny, Liya’s father, said, “We are happy that the doctors at Aster Medcity were able to diagnose this rare condition. Thanks to them, this real life fairy tale of our Sleeping Beauty has a happy ending just like in the story. Liya is now awake and is playing with her little sister.”

PAKISTAN DAYHAPPYAs we celebrate another year of Pakistan’s birth as an Islamic

Republic; the green flag of this beautiful nation waves with pride and its crescent glitters while the light of its stars guides her towards progress and prosperity. Pakistan Day is a national holiday to commemorate the Lahore Resolution of 1940 and the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan which led to the

nation becoming the first Islamic Republic in the world.

Home to the world’s oldest civilization, Mohenjo-Daro, Pakistan today hosts the highest paved international road in the world, the Karakoram Highway which links Pakistan to China. The nation also leads the garment industry with its modest fashion with its classic cotton Kurtis and intricately embellished Sherwanis. Having mastered the art of giving, Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation, the largest non-profit social welfare programme in the country runs the world’s biggest ambulance network. All these facts only prove that Pakistan has spread its wings far and wide and there is no stopping!

Today as Pakistan grows from strength to strength and establishes a global presence, Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah looks upon its child and beams with joy.

On the auspicious occasion of Pakistan Day I wish to greet

the entire nation. Each year, the day serves to remind us to nurture and uphold those ideals, principles and lofty goals that inspired the Muslims of the subcontinent to forge unity in their ranks and become one to realize their dream.

On this day, seventy nine years ago, the Muslims of the subcontinent through their collective will expressed unshakeable resolve to carve

out a separate homeland for themselves wherein they could fashion their lives in accordance with their own tradition, mores, values and culture. Through their indefatigable struggle, unparalleled commitment and with the blessings of Allah Almighty they achieved their objective within a short span of seven years.

Let us pay tributes to Quaid-i-Azam and other founding fathers who through their unwavering resolve, iron will and

unprecedented commitment to their cause brought the Muslims of the subcontinent under a platform and created a separate homeland for them. The Quaid and our forefathers had envisaged a democratic and pluralistic state where constitutionalism and rule of law would reign supreme and where minorities will enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

Let us remind ourselves on this day that Pakistan was created as a result of democratic struggle and its

survival and well being also depends on democracy. I am confident that the parliament, the people and all institutions will work in harmony to this end.

While commemorating this day with traditional zeal and zest, let us also pause and reflect on our achievements and challenges. The menace of extremism and terrorism had threatened to shake the very fabric of our society but it is very heartening to note that, under a decision of the Government of Pakistan, the law enforcement agencies with complete backing of the brave people of the country have greatly overcome this scourge and are committed to completely uproot it. Let us resolve to nurture values of tolerance, harmony and respect for dissent in our society for lasting peace in our country.

Pakistan’s economy is on the rise and is poised to become a regional economic power. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, a manifestation of deepening bilateral relations between Pakistan and China, has the potential to change the fate of the region in terms of socio-economic development. The mega project, once completed, will usher in prosperity and progress not only in Pakistan but also in the whole region.

It is indeed a matter of satisfaction that the nation

is striving to address various challenges under a democratic dispensation. I am confident that our collective efforts marked by patriotism, sincerity, commitment and honesty would help us in steering this country towards greater prosperity and glory.

Let us express our firm resolve to continue nourishing the legacy and heritage bequeathed to us by our founding fathers and by following in their footsteps make our country a cradle of peace, progress and stability .

Vowing to make Pakistan a modern statePrime Minister

Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, vowing to

make Pakistan a modern and developed state in conformity with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam, called for collective endeavours to ensure progress in all regions of the country.

He, in a message on Pakistan Day, said, “We have to make collective endeavours to build Pakistan into a state where all citizens have equal rights and all regions of the country enjoy the fruits of development.”

The prime minister said as a nation it was incumbent upon us to build a society where nobody was discriminated against on the basis of colour, ethnicity, religion, creed or sect.

He said, “Today the nation have to renew its pledge, and once again we have to make Pakistan a modern and

developed state in conformity with the vision and thinking of the Quaid.”

Nawaz Sharif said there had been an appreciable acceleration in this process during the last three years.

“With the Grace of God this journey will continue with the same spirit and commitment,” he said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the creation of Pakistan ushered in the possibilities of durable peace in South Asia, it was also a ray of hope for those who had been deprived of equal opportunities in the United India and attempts had been made to decimate their cultural identity.

He said the nation clinched back its identity in the form of Pakistan, which was denied to them by the majority. It was implied in the Pakistan Resolution that Pakistan after

coming into being would transform into a national state where all the citizens would enjoy equal rights.

“We are grateful to Allah that today the people of Pakistan have regained their

lost identity. During the last three years the Army, security agencies and people have rendered sacrifices to make Pakistan a cradle of peace. The government has maintained its focus on accelerating

economic prosperity and progress,” the prime minister said.

He said today Pakistan was a democratic country, the judiciary and media were independent and the backward areas of the country were being developed on priority.

Nawaz Sharif said work on the epoch-making projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was in full swing, which had unleashed a process of progress and reconstruction in Balochistan, adding that the day was not far off when, God willing, the province would join the developed areas of the country.

The prime minister said it was a pleasant coincidence that the Muslim Ummah found its destination from the platform of Muslim League “and today under the leadership of the same party we have rediscovered it.”

He said March 23 was an unforgettable day of national history. The Muslim Ummah of South Asia was vying to find its identity since long but it had no determined destination before it.

“On this day we found that our focus and impregnable unity which not only identified the destination but also helped us to achieve it in the shape of Pakistan.”

He said though in the Allahabad address by Allama Muhammad Iqbal the contours of that destination had been earmarked but it found its expression and consensus on March 23.

“This day reminds us that with steely determination and unity under an honest leadership, the ostensibly unachievable targets can be easily achieved. Pakistan Paindabad,” the prime minister concluded.

established the small primary school in 1968. Prior to this, the Pakistan school was functioning from a rented building in the Fariq Fadil area of Manama. After a few years, the school was upgraded to secondary-level education following an affiliation with the Federal Board,

Islamabad, Pakistan. In 1984, the new campus of the Pakistan School was constructed in Isa-Town. This newly constructed block was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier. Between 1994 and 1995, the Jinnah Block and Sir Sayyed Block were constructed in the Isa-Town Campus. Today,

the school delivers education to more than 2600 students from 14 different communities. Over the years, Pakistan School has laid down a well-defined and practical network of extra and co-curricular activities for personality and character building of students.

Pakistani students have been performing tremendously well in the Kingdom in different fields such as sports, academics and cultural activities. Under the able leadership of their Chairman, Mr. Sami ur Rehman, Pakistan School has covered many distinctive landmarks over the last couple of years in both academic and administrative areas. Recently, the school has achieved the progressive status by the National Authority for Qualifications and Quality Assurance of Education and Training (QQA), Bahrain. The Pakistan School has also improved its results impressively in the Federal Board Secondary Examinations. Pakistan School has earned a noble name through its admirable participation in the national, cultural and social festivals to strengthen the connection of deep love and affiliation with Bahrain. Students who excel in their Board Exams are awarded scholarships, while the school also spends thousands of Bahraini Dinars for fee concession to support deserving students, following a transparent criterion.

In addition, the school transport system has been re-organised and improved to ensure smooth and safe travelling for students. The school has installed the Tally integrated web school system to enhance its performance in the spheres of academics, administration and student data compilation. An internal educational quality assurance system has also been introduced to ensure dynamic and resourceful classroom teaching. Due to solid academic planning and performance,

admissions have increased, resulting in the construction of eight new academic rooms which have been made available to students.

Technology rules the world today so to give students the right exposure, junior students will be provided computer-oriented education from

the new academic session commencing in April 2017. Students of the school were given extensive training in fire-fighting and other safety methods with the help of Bahrain Civil Defence. Extensive staff-training workshops led by international experts have become a routine

affair in the school to equip the teaching faculty with the latest techniques in the spheres of academics and education. A full-fledged room equipped with play apparatus and other interesting paraphernalia for the KG classes is already set up for making academics more enjoyable.

Technology has become the driving force in every aspect of our

lives. Be it engineering or medicine, technology is helping professionals stretch limits that were unimaginable before. Nobody knows the rapid pace of change better than engineers, no matter which discipline they belong to.

“An engineer’s work is shaped by the latest technology, hence there is a need to continuously update our knowledge. That is why we organise regular technical seminars and workshops so that our members can gain insights into latest developments,” says Engr. Mohammad Masroor Anwer, the Chairman of the Institution of Engineers Pakistan – Bahrain Chapter (IEP–BC).

The Institution of Engineers Pakistan-Bahrain Chapter (IEP-BC) was established in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2002. IEP-BC is the largest engineering organisation of Pakistani engineers in Bahrain. IEP-BC is affiliated with the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE). It is dedicated

to the advancement of scientific and engineering knowledge of its members, and the institution aims to upgrade its members’ knowledge and understanding about the rapidly-changing field. IEP-BC is part of the Institution of Engineers Pakistan, which is the largest engineering organisation of qualified Pakistani engineers with over 50,000 members worldwide.

IEP-BC’s new board was elected in October 2015, and since then the new IEP-BC board in association with the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) has organised technical events at BSE Juffair. Since then,

the first event was organised on 8 March, 2016 on “What is New in Revised Quality Management System Standards ISO 9001-2015”.

The chief guest of the event was the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Mr. Javed Malik. The presentation was delivered by Project Management and Engineering Systems consultant Mr. Tariq Bin Zafar Al Hussaini. The presenter highlighted the basic concept of strategic management, core competencies of an organisation, risk based process management and their integration with the revised QMS standard ISO 9001:2015.

Another event was arranged on 19 April, 2016 on “Construction Risks Examining Causes & Assessing Impact”. The presenter Dr. Hakop Mirzabaigian, a specialist in risk management, value engineering and construction, explained potential risks in the construction industry. Case studies were also presented to demonstrate possible actions or inactions that cause unexpected consequences.

Javed Malik, Pakistan’s Ambassador, Bahrain

Although, Pakistan Day is always a special day for all Pakistanis, this year there

is a visible sense of patriotism, and celebration that grips the whole nation, as they see that the due to prudent and wise polices of the government led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan is steadily moving towards stability, progress and prosperity. According to informed global analysts, it is only a matter of time before Pakistan asserts itself as regional economic power and all macro-economic indicators clearly substantiate this view. The ‘National Action Plan’ was successful in uniting the country’s political and military leadership to collectively address the issue of extremism from its core and carry out one of the largest operations named Zarb-e-Azb, followed by the ‘Rad-Ul Fasad’ aimed at restoring stability in Pakistan, as our country turned the tide and positioned itself firmly in the comity as a stable, progressive and emerging nation.  The government has successfully implemented policies

that are reviving the economy, restoring investor confidence and promoting Pakistan’s trade with the world. Today, our foreign exchange reserves stand at a record high and the fiscal deficit has been narrowed.

In addition, the government is providing innovative incentives to businessmen, investors and traders to encourage them to participate in economic development. The government is following a policy of liberalization, de-regulation and transparency and efforts are being undertaken to improve governance. This has resulted in global recognition of Pakistan when it was upgraded to the status of an “Emerging Economy” by leading credit-rating agencies.

Economic CorridorThe China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has clearly positioned Pakistan as the most important trade hub of the future as we set out to connect the Port of Gawadar to China through a network of roads, trains as well as pipelines, and provide much needed access to China as well as some central Asian states to the

world’s largest deep sea port of Gawadar. This enhances the trade and communication between Pakistan, China and the region. The estimated $46 Billion dollar investment coming from China will open the door to abundant opportunities for Pakistan, create thousands of jobs, and generally boost Pakistan’s economy. Earlier this month Pakistan recently hosted the ECO Summit in which Presidents, Prime Ministers and

ministers from regional countries, particularly the central-Asian states actively took part. Their growing interest in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a clear indication that all of these important regional economies clearly see that the future of regional trade is through Pakistan. The Prime Minister has encouraged our friends and allies in the region to be part of Pakistan’s success story and take advantage of the opportunities that CPEC offers.

Growing relationsPakistan and the Kingdom of Bahrain share a deep-rooted relationship. We are connected through the same faith, a common heritage, similarity of cultures, and a shared global outlook on all regional and international issues. The visit of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa to Pakistan and the return visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Bahrain gave our bilateral relations

a fresh boost. After assuming my charge as the Ambassador of Pakistan just over a year ago, I have focused on further expanding and upgrading our ties with a clear focus on enhancing our economic relationship. We organised the first Pakistan-Bahrain Business Opportunities Conference in September 2016 which was attended by over 500 delegates. Earlier this year Bahrain upgraded their diplomatic relations to a Joint Ministerial Commission and the Foreign Minister of Bahrain visited Pakistan in February 2017.  We have had regular ministerial parliamentary and military visits which have collectively consolidated, strengthened and expanded our bilateral ties. This year would be equally important as we already have high-level ministerial visits being planned, which clearly indicates the love, brotherhood and affection between our leadership, government and people.

A Promising Future So this year, on Pakistan National Day, the people of Pakistan feel delighted to see our country emerging as a stable democracy, empowering its people through education, employment and entrepreneurship. Our political and military leadership are on the same page and working closely together in building a stable and crime-free Pakistan with zero tolerance for extremism and corruption.  Our economy is emerging, our trade is on the increase, our foreign exchange reserves stand at historic levels and international investors are showing growing confidence in the opportunities in our country.   So this year, as a nation of 200 million people, we celebrate National Day with renewed jubilation.

Actor Scott Eastwood,

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, who has been a prominent figure in

the entertainment industry for over two decades, feels the times are still challenging for women in the industry.

Lopez got her first big break with “Selena”, which completed 20 years since its release on March 21, 1997. She portrayed the rise and murder of Tejano music

star Selena Quintanilla-Perez in the biopic.

“(‘Selena’) was a meaty role, but it was few and far between, especially for Latinos to have a role like that,” Lopez told variety.com. “I think it’s still challenging for women, especially being Latina. Thinking about ‘Selena’ 20 years ago and to have a role like that,” she added. (IANS)

Actress Paris Jackson has revealed that she was left “heartbroken” by “High School

Musical” star Zac Efron at a concert she attended.

Paris, the daughter of late King of Pop Michael Jackson, was a huge fan of “High School Musical” franchise as a child.

She got devastated when she attended her first concert and learned that Efron would not be performing because he was working on another film project, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“The first concert that I actively wanted to see was ‘High School Musical’,” Paris said on “The Tonight Show” to host Jimmy Fallon.

But her excitement soon turned to despair after she was informed Efron wouldn’t be at the concert. (IANS)

Fight a UTI: Cranberry juiceIt’s not merely a sweet mixer for boozy

beverages. Studies show that the go-to preventive remedy for UTIs isn’t just the

stuff of folklore. Past research has focused on compounds in cranberries (and blueberries)

called proanthocyanidins, which were found to keep bacteria from attaching to

bladder cells and causing infection. Now new research from McGill University demonstrates

yet another way that the humble cranberry may be a woman’s best friend. In lab studies,

cranberry prevented the bacteria from producing a specific protein called flagellin,

which is necessary for growing the tails that enable them to swim up the urinary tract and

attach to cells. Look for products with cranberry juice listed in the first three ingredients. (Health)

Survive cold season: Tuna,

halibut, turkeyDon’t subsist only on salads during

the winter months. Getting an insufficient amount of selenium can mean that you’re

missing out on a key player in immune function. Selenium helps build up white blood cells—

particularly those responsible for killing bacteria and viruses, even the flu. Animal studies have shown that

selenium deficiency not only leads to more severe flu symptoms but also enables mild flu viruses to

mutate into more virulent strains. Just one serving of halibut or sardines gives you more than 60 percent of your RDA and provides you with

mood-boosting omega-3 fatty acids.

Once upon a time, food as medicine wasn’t

such a strange idea—Hippocrates himself

vouched for it. And while you may not expect your

meals to hold as much importance in an era when doctors can do

face transplants, food is still vital for mental and physical well-being. The

thought that diet enhanc-es mood and wellness

may be age-old, but the scientific proof is brand-

new. So turn your grocery list into an Rx for what

ails you, using this latest research as your guide.

Curb heartburn: Whole grains and fibreIt’s the season for overindulging and heartburn. But adding in more veggies and replacing refined grains like white rice and pasta with their whole-wheat counterparts might help you survive the holidays reflux-free. The high insoluble-fibre content gets things moving. The more fibre you eat, the less time food spends in the stomach, which helps keep food and acid from coming back up.Soothe joint and muscle pain: Fatty fish

It’s like oil in the Tin Man’s joints: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish such as salmon and sardines can help get stiff knees working again. A recent meta-analysis of research found that taking omega-3s daily reduced joint pain and a.m. stiffness enough to allow patients with rheumatoid arthritis to reduce NSAID use.

Can we be done with movies using Groundhog Day as a

narrative tool, please? The idea of a person reliving the same day lost its novelty on February 13, 1993, a day after the Bill Murray-starrer hit theaters.

Just like Samantha (Deutch) doesn’t know how to escape her own Groundhog Day - the day of her death. Sam is your regular high-school girl with a blindingly stereotypical group of friends: the sassy mean girl (Sage), the drunk girl (Rahimi) and the Asian know-it-all (Wu). She wakes up on her judgement

day, is mean to her parents, rides to school with her “baes”, breaks hearts, attends a party, gets into a fight, rides back home, meets with an accident and dies. Rinse and repeat.

If you must tell a story where the character is living through the same day every day, must you make it such a drab day? Must the protagonist wear the same outfit every day? Must they fall into the predictable pattern of rebelling on one day, and being saintly on the next? Why is this story even worth telling? Before I Fall leaves

you with more questions than answers.

That said, the movie does talk about bullying and the importance of self worth. The concept is done-to-death, but handled with sensitivity. And Deutch’s performance makes you root for Sam, her heartbreaking eventuality aside. Some of the banter between the girls might even crack you up.

However, nothing can compensate for the fact that it’s a movie about repetition that is, unintentionally, highly repetitive. (ToI)

Rewards from hard work and dedication could finally be in the offing. You experience the warm feeling that comes from deep satisfaction and knowing that you deserve everything wonderful that’s happening. You will want to bask in your happiness with your loved ones. Plan a celebration and share your good fortune with the people who have supported you.Educational or spiritual growth on your part is likely to attract new friends who could become close companions. There could even be a new romantic partner in the bunch. This comes from the expansion of your mind. The new people should share your interests and turn into companions on your quest for enlightenment. An increase in your financial status could lead to changes in your household. You might choose to redecorate or purchase new furniture or move to a better place. A household member might move out. Although it seems illogical, the changes in your surroundings reflect the transformations taking place within you. Don’t let fear or inertia hold you back.Inner transformation is likely to make a big difference in your communications right now. Your relationships could improve because you’re more open and honest without being too blunt. You seem to have a greater understanding of the needs and desires of those closest to you. Unfortunately, this process could also involve leaving some old friends behind. Don’t fight it.

Increased enthusiasm for your favourite project may take you in a new direction. You could even decide to change careers in order to devote yourself more fully to doing what you’ve discovered you love the most. Your physical, emotional, and spiritual health should be very good right now. Your quality of life is likely to be improving. Go with the flow.

If you’re in a committed relationship, expect to feel a new sense of mutual purpose and make some new friends. If you aren’t involved, love could come into your life today. You may just think it’s about time, but changes in you are attracting interesting people. Children who come into your life now might prove to be natural gurus who help you in your spiritual quest.

Positive emotions like love, enthusiasm, or optimism that have been repressed for years could surface today, bringing a new sense of joy and anticipation for the future. This could involve activities that you enjoyed as a child. Don’t feel silly if you want to ride a merry-go-round or go to the circus. You should indulge your inner child from time to time. Have fun.

Group activities like rallies or festivals could take place in your neighbourhood today. You may attend, and you could learn some new concepts that give impetus to your spiritual growth. You may run into some old friends you haven’t seen for a while. Talking with others could start your mind in a new direction. Take a walk before you go to bed tonight or you might not be able to sleep.

A number of new and exciting relationships could appear in your life now, some of them showing promise of becoming close. Old ones seem to be fading. This can make you a little sad, but it’s a process that you can’t stop. As you change inside, so your relationships change. You might attract friends who share new interests. Go with the flow.

The development of a talent that you’ve neglected could have surprising results. You could find that it’s just what you need in order to expand your horizons and catapult you into whatever situation you want to be in. This could lead to an increased income. You’re changing inside, and these changes are mostly positive. They may also be reflected in your outer life.

A period of great inner transformation and powerful upheaval in your outer life is coming upon you now. A part of you wants to welcome it and charge ahead, while another part holds back, possibly out of fear or lack of self-confidence. While resistance can delay the change, it can’t stop it. It might be best to continue forward in spite of misgivings.

Your intuition should be growing by leaps and bounds. Today you may get psychic messages from everywhere, both personal and universal. This can be a bit overwhelming, particularly if you aren’t used to it, but don’t fight it. It’s a symptom of your inner growth. It should be a very positive development in the long run. It can help turn your dearest dreams into reality.

The Kingdom’s Adhari Park was filled with smiles

as over 100 students took up the cause of saving water at a World Water Day event hosted by the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) of Bahrain.

The EWA celebrated World Water Day and Gulf Conservation Week (22-28 March) to create awareness about water conservation and find solutions to water scarcity issues in the Gulf region.

The programme and exhibition was attended by representatives of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Supreme Council for Environment, the Municipal Capital Council and deputies of the capital governorate.

Students reflected upon the

importance of saving water and spread the message of ‘Save to Sustain’ through creative plays, self-composed songs and vibrant art-work.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to save this valuable resource but our main aim was to include children and youngsters in the process of water conservation and to

create awareness. They are the future of Bahrain and an aware youth can make a world of a difference to its nation,” said Abbas Ali AlKhayat, spokesperson of Electricity and Water Authority.

Emphasising on the steps taken by the department, he added: “We have recently formed Water Conservation

Committees in all schools. They educate students about different ways to conserve water and also teach them about important concepts such as sustainable development in a simple manner.”

The event also hosted an exhibition for students to showcase their themed artwork and innovative

methods of preserving water. Students and experts from Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Institute of Technology presented inventive Hydroponic and Aeroponic water saving devices which help in creating a balance between water, soil and oxygen in the environment.

Speaking to DT News in

line of the event, A. Hussain Bin Ali Mirza, the Electricity and Water Minister said: “The department is constantly trying to find ways of saving water in the Kingdom and solving the Gulf’s water scarcity issues. I am proud of my team to have initiated this event which includes so many students and hope to devise many more innovative and environment-friendly ideas in the future.”

A speech made by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon was also read out at the event. World Water Day was established by the United Nations in 1992 in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) to learn more about water-related issues, be inspired and make a difference.

Middle East expressed frustration yesterday at a ban on large electronic devices for flights to the United States and Britain that has sparked confusion and speculation.

From Saturday, passengers on flights to the United States and Britain from major hubs in Turkey and the Arab world will have to check in any device larger than a smartphone, including laptops and tablets.

The United States and Britain have cited intelligence indicating passenger jets could be targeted via explosives planted in electronic devices.

“Is there anything else I should know before flying back home? Navy blue

boxers not allowed? Should I shave?” asked an American expat living in Abu Dhabi with a direct flight to the United States next week.

As the March 25 enforcement deadline looms, passengers are growing increasingly wary of restrictions on living in and travelling from the Middle East. The US ban affects nine airlines from eight countries: Turkey, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The British ban, meanwhile, targets flights out of Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Lebanon. Canada and France have also said they are looking into similar regulations.

Salvage operators began raising South Korea’s

sunken Sewol ferry yesterday, officials said, nearly three years after the disaster killed more than 300 people and dealt a crippling blow to now-ousted president Park Geun-Hye.

Emotional parents of victims -- the vast majority of the dead in the country’s worst-ever maritime tragedy were schoolchildren -- urged people to pray for a

successful recovery. The vessel was lying more than 40 metres (130 feet) below the waves off southwestern South Korea and the operation, originally scheduled for last year, had been pushed back several times because of adverse weather.

It is thought that nine bodies still unaccounted for may be trapped inside the sunken ship, and raising the ferry intact has been a key demand of the victims’ families.

United Nations

Approximately one in four children worldwide

will live in regions with extremely scarce water resources by 2040, UNICEF said in a report yesterday.

In research released on World Water Day, the United Nations children’s agency warned that in just over two decades nearly

600 million children will be living in areas with severely limited safe water sources, as population growth and surging demand for water clash with the effects of climate change.

More than 36 countries are currently enduring extreme water stress, the report said, with water demand exceeding available renewable supplies.

Seoul

A new North Korean missile test failed

yesterday, the South and US said, two weeks after Pyongyang launched four rockets in what it called a drill for an attack on American bases in Japan.

The nuclear-armed North is under several sets of United Nations sanctions over its atomic and ballistic missile programmes.

It is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with an atomic warhead, and staged two nuclear tests and multiple missile launches last year. The North fired one missile from an air base in the eastern port of Wonsan

Wednesday morning, but the launch “is believed to have failed”, Seoul’s defence ministry said in a statement, adding it was analysing what type of missile was involved.

The US military said the missile exploded shortly after launch. “US Pacific Command detected what we assess was a failed North Korean missile launch attempt... in the vicinity of Kalma. A missile appears to have exploded within seconds of launch,” said spokesman David Benham.

Earlier this month Pyongyang launched a flight of four ballistic missiles, with three landing provocatively close to Japan in what the North described as practice

for attacks on US military bases in Japan.

On Sunday, its leader Kim Jong-Un personally oversaw and hailed a “successful” test of what Pyongyang said was a new rocket engine -- which can be easily repurposed for use in missiles. Seoul said that experiment showed “meaningful progress” in the North’s missile capabilities.

The developments come as Seoul and Washington hold large-scale annual joint military exercises that always infuriate Pyongyang, which sees them as a rehearsal for invasion.

Analysts’ opinions are varied but many agree that Pyongyang has made significant progress. (AFP)

Jerusalem

The newly restored shrine surrounding what is

believed to be Jesus’s tomb was unveiled at a ceremony in Jerusalem yesterday following months of delicate work and in time for crowds of Easter visitors.

Religious leaders in traditional robes addressed a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site

where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried.

They stood in front of the ornate 19th-century edicule surrounding the tomb, its onion-shaped dome above, as hymns were sung.

Dignitaries including Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, considered the spiritual head of Orthodox church leaders,

were in attendance.Greek Orthodox Patriarch

Theophilos III of Jerusalem, in his address to the ceremony, called the restoration “not only a gift to our Holy Land but to the whole world.”

“For the first time in over two centuries, this sacred edicule has been restored,” he said, referring to the shrine completed in 1810 surrounding the tomb. (AFP)

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth suffered upset defeats as the underdogs

bared their teeth on the opening day of the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play yesterday.

McIlroy’s quest to regain his match play crown was dealt an early setback as the world number two crashed to a 2&1 defeat against Danish veteran Soren Kjeldsen at Austin Country Club in Texas.

An out-of-form world number six Spieth was then comprehensively beaten 4&2 by Japan’s Hideto Tanihara.

Match play specialist McIlroy, the 2015 champion, had clawed his way back from two down to make it all square heading into the final three holes.

But McIlroy missed a difficult birdie putt on the 16th to halve the hole, leaving Kjeldsen one up with two to play.

The 41-year-old Dane then produced a magnificent tee-shot to within three feet on the par-three 17th to pile the pressure on McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman made the green with his tee shot but was unable to sink his birdie, leaving Kjeldsen with the simplest of tap-ins to complete a 2&1 victory.

“I felt good coming into today,” Kjeldsen said. “He’s a pretty spectacular player so you don’t want to watch him too much.

“I knew I had to play well to have any kind of a chance so I didn’t look at what Rory was doing and fortunately I played well,” added Kjeldsen, who as the world number 68 is one of the lowest-ranked players in the in the 64-man field.

“Everyone I’m playing this week I’m going to be the underdog,” Kjeldsen joked after the Group 2 win.

“It’s nice. I haven’t had the best start to the season in America. But the last few weeks I’ve been getting better. I feel good. You can talk about match play but at the end of the day you need to shoot good scores and that’s what I did today.” This week’s tournament sees the field split into 16 groups of four players who play each other on a round robin basis through Friday. The 16 group winners then advance to the knockout rounds starting on Saturday.

In the day’s other Group 2 game, Gary Woodland of the United States defeated Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo 3&2.

McIlroy will attempt to reignite his challenge on Thursday against Woodland.

England’s Paul Casey defeated Joost Luiten of the Netherlands 2&1 in Group 12 where South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel thrashed An Byeong-Hun of South Korea 6&5. (AFP)

Valverde recovers with stage winLa Molina

Spain’s Alejandro Valverde of the Movistar team brushed off a one

minute overnight penalty to claim a mountain summit win on stage three of the Tour of Catalonia yesterday.

American rider Tejay Van Garderen of BMC is the new overall leader of the week long tour, finishing just seconds behind Wednesday’s winner.

Van Garderen and BMC were one of the main beneficiaries of the penalty imposed on Movistar for pushing during the previous day’s time trial.

Stage three featured three mountains and an escape group was caught on the final climb which culminated in Valverde outsprinting Ireland’s Dan Martin for the win.

“I felt great today and the whole

team performed well on a fast paced stage with Sky setting the tempo -- all I had to do was produce the final sprint really,” said Valverde.

Most of the main contenders for the title including Sky’s Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas were just a few seconds adrift of the winner with Britain’s Adam Yates coming third on the day.
