Fortunately, I had a plan. Not only did I have a plan, but it was so brilliant and perfectly suited to a Chrisan School that I almost laughed at my own genius. Here was my plan: I had my Bible in my desk. I took out the Bible, and put it on the shelf that was just in front of me. When nobody was looking, I put one hand on the Bible, and one hand on my test. As a grade 7 student sing in my desk, I realize now that I had a flawed understanding of how God worked. I thought that since I was faithful to God (I went to church every Sunday!), God would be faithful to me (and, to the best of my understanding, “faithful” meant giving me the answers to my science test). In 5 weeks I, as well as the other grade 7 teachers, are going to have the wonderful opportunity to take our current grade 7 class to Seale to see a museum exhibit on King Tutankhamun, an Egypan Pharaoh from over 3000 years ago. In Bible and in socials, we have been talking about how the Biblical story IS our story. We are a part of the same story that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were a part of. We are also a part of the same story that King Tut was a part of. Looking at these people, we can see examples of God’s faithfulness sprinkled throughout each of their stories, just as it was in my story when I was in grade 7 wring a science test. There is a chance that, unlike King Tut, people may not be lining up to see us 3000 years from now. This begs the queson: What kind of legacy do we want to leave? What do we want to be known for? Do we want to be known for being rich, like King Tut? Or would we rather be known for taking care of the student who was alone on the playground? Would we rather be known for giving somebody a drink when they were thirsty, or food when they were hungry? At Surrey Chrisan School, we are aiming to educate for wholeness. Part of this wholeness is coming to a deep understanding of what it means to rest in God’s faithfulness. When I was wring that science test, I misinterpreted “God’s faithfulness” as some sort of gimmicky, genie-like power that I could summon when I needed it. What I realize now is that for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, King Tut, and myself, God’s faithfulness is not something that simply sweeps in and out of our lives; rather, it is an ever present reality that is there whether we are aware of it or not. As we come out of Thanksgiving weekend, that ever present faithfulness is something I am extremely thankful for. Danny Nagtegaal Assistant Principal MC October 12, 2012

Great is Thy Faithfulness

I remember when I was in grade 7 (the grade I am now

teaching), and I was about to write a science test. The

science test was on the human body, and, as was a part of

my rhythm at the 5me, I had not studied. Not only had I not

studied, but I had also been sick for a few days. The result of

this was that, coming in to write the test, I was completely

and uBerly unprepared. As I opened the test and looked

over the ques5ons, I realized that I was doomed to fail.

Fortunately, I had a plan. Not only did I have a plan, but it

was so brilliant and perfectly suited to a Chris5an School that I almost laughed at my own genius. Here

was my plan: I had my Bible in my desk. I took out the Bible, and put it on the shelf that was just in front

of me. When nobody was looking, I put one hand on the Bible, and one hand on my test. I then closed

my eyes, and simply waited for God to tell me the correct answers to the ques5ons on my test (I’m not

kidding…I actually tried this).

You can imagine my sense of shock when, aHer five whole minutes of closing my eyes, I s5ll had no idea

what the correct answers were. As a grade 7 student siJng in my desk, I realize now that I had a flawed

understanding of how God worked. I thought that since I was faithful to God (I went to church every

Sunday!), God would be faithful to me (and, to the best of my understanding, “faithful” meant giving me

the answers to my science test).

In 5 weeks I, as well as the other grade 7 teachers, are going to have the wonderful opportunity to take

our current grade 7 class to SeaBle to see a museum exhibit on King Tutankhamun, an Egyp5an Pharaoh

from over 3000 years ago. In Bible and in socials, we have been talking about how the Biblical story IS

Secondary Campus News

New Changes To The Criteria For Provincial Scholarships

Last year our gradua5ng class of 82 students received 19 provincial scholarships based on the results of their five exams in Grades 10,

11, and 12. The requirement of three exams at 73%+ and one at 86%+ s5ll holds BUT the provincial government will only award 5,000

of these in the enre province, which in effect, selects students who have scored very high on exams. I do not know how the above will

play out for our students but I encourage students to take the exams seriously and do your best.

Cow’s Eye Dissec#on

I really liked dissec5ng the cow's eye! I used a scalpel, scissors and tweezers. When I opened us the iris, I reached in and took out the

lens. AHer we took the lens out, we read a piece of paper. With the lens in front of me it magnified and turned the words upside

down. Did you know that you see everything upside down? I saw lots of black goop from inside of the eye. I saw the op5c nerve. It

sends the images to the brain. I hope I do it again some5me.
