ENFIELD TOWNWhite
First of all may I extend a very warm wel-
come to the Directors, staff, players and
supporters of our visitors Enfield Town.
Hopefully traffic wasn’t too bad getting
here and you will have a safe and swift
journey home after the match.
The two Clubs have been regular oppo-
nents over the past few seasons, and
although it was ultimately a disappointing
night for us, the play-off game at the
Queen Elizabeth II Stadium stands out as
the highlight. The two sets of supporters
standing shoulder to shoulder watching the
penalty shoot-out epitomises what non-
league football is all about. Penalties have
been a somewhat sore point for us recent-
ly, including losing out to Witham in the
Essex Senior Cup after a 0-0 draw that we
could easily have won by five or six!
Last Saturday saw us survive the weath-
er, to progress to the final qualifying round
of the FA Trophy with a 2-0 win at Waltham
Abbey thanks to goals by Harry Agombar
and Kenny Beaney. Monday’s draw saw us
come out at home to Ryman South side
Corinthian-Casuals. That match will be
played on Sunday 29 November, kick-off
2.00pm. Next Tuesday, we travel back to
Wingate & Finchley to try to avenge an
unlucky defeat in the League, and thereby
book a place in the Quarter-Finals of the
Robert Dyas League Cup for the third year
running. Our success in the Cup competi-
tions has seen a backlog of League games
building up; we will now visit Needham
Market on 12th January.
Back to today’s match, our last League
game was a fortnight ago when we beat
Burgess Hill Town 2-0, that at the time of
writing puts us in 10th place 9 points
behind leaders Dulwich Hamlet with three
games in hand. Enfield Town recovered
from a poor start to the season to record
six wins in a row, but come into today’s
match off the back of a 2-2 draw against
Bil lericay Town and a 2-0 defeat to
Thamesmead Town in last weekend’s F A
Trophy game.
A small trivia question came up the other
night, the answer to which, for once, can’t
be found on Chris Jones’ excellent site…..
The Grays Athletic side lined up Smith,
Kenny Brown, Burns, Mason, Gould, Leahy,
Woodward, Pepperell, Middleton, Popham
and Newton – what was the match?
All that is left to say is to enjoy the
match, get behind your teams and we hope
to see you all again very soon.

Benno & His
Blue Notes
With

Good afternoon and welcome back to
Aveley for this League game with
Enfield.
Today we will be certainly expecting
a very tough game against a side that
are much better than the League table
would suggest and at present are one
of the form teams. I will be looking
for a much improved performance
than that of our last couple of games.
Although we have got the wins in
these games, I think our levels of per-
formance have not been to the high
standards we set ourselves. One big
positive though is we have got
through the games in very difficult
conditions; this could be what we face
now with the winter months ahead.
With our young side I'm looking for
the few experienced guys to get
everyone together and pull them
through. I will be looking for more
consistency in the League trying to
string a few wins together.
The way the League is panning out,
three quarters of the teams will feel
they have a chance to get amongst
the front runners, so consistency is
key. We did it last year and I believe
we are stronger in terms of squad
depth, but that is not to say I am not
looking to improve it. We have some
good games coming up over the next
month or two including an important
FA Trophy game next week where we
will certainly be looking to progress to
the competition proper. The added
bonus at the moment is I have a full
squad fit and well which gives me big
selection headaches. For the first
time I have to make the tough deci-
sions to leave good players out of the
squad completely. They get very frus-
trated which is understandable, but
they just have to be patient as there
are many games to play and they
must be ready to play when called
upon again.
Enjoy the game and get behind the
lads today as your support really does
help.
Benno

MAN OF THE MATCH AND PLAYER OFTHE MONTH SELECTIONS
OCTOBER 2015This season, supporters once again have
an opportunity to vote for their Man of theMatch after every first team game. All youhave to do is register on the fans’ forum atwww.graysathletic.co.uk, go to the section‘Man of the Match’ and cast your vote. Each month all the votes are added togeth-er to determine the ‘Player of the Month’and the results are reported here in thisMatch Day Programme. There is a bottle ofchampagne for the winner, donated by asupporter.
For October, we are delighted that sup-porter, Supporters Trust Functions Officerand Prediction League organiser, PhilBoston, is this month’s sponsor. ThanksPhil. He will have the pleasure of present-ing the bubbly to our winner before today’smatch.
During the month, we played eight games- three in the Ryman League PremierDivision, three in the F A Cup, one in the FA Trophy and one in the League Cup. In theLeague we beat Lewes, but lost toKingstonian and Leatherhead, all gamesbeing played at Mill Field. In the FA Cup wewon at Hanwell Town, drew at home toWelling, but lost the replay away. We beatBiggleswade Town in the F A Trophy andEast Thurrock in the League Cup (on penal-ties); both ties were at Mill Field. So our overall record was four wins, a drawand three defeats. We scored a total of 12goals and conceded 14 in all competitions. Based on your votes, the ‘Man of the Match’for each match was as follows:Kingstonian (h) lost 1-3 – Roman Michael-PercilEast Thurrock (h) won on penalties after a2-2 draw at 90 minutes – George KamurasiHanwell Town (a) won 2-1 – RomanMichael-PercilLeatherhead (h) lost 0-2 – Jey SivaLewes (h) won 4-0 – Dumebi GB-DumakaWelling (h) drew 1-1 – Mark BentleyWelling (a) lost 0-4 – Joao CarlosBiggleswade Town (h) won 2-1 – JakeHutchings
Four players were in the running for the‘Player of the Month’ Award. Between themthey polled over 55% of the total votescast. In 4th place, it was our leading strik-er, Dumebi GB-Dumaka who starred in our4-0 home win against Lewes. He has nowscored 16 goals in as many starts this sea-son. 3rd was our manager and midfieldmaestro, Mark Bentley. He was outstandingin our 1-1 F A Cup draw at home to Wellingand showed again that his experience isinvaluable on, and off, the pitch. The run-ner-up was squad goalkeeper, GeorgeKamurasi. He only played in one game inOctober, the penalty shoot-out triumph overEast Thurrock, but not for the first time, hispenalty saves were crucial in helping usthough to the next round and he was thefans overwhelming choice for ‘Man of theMatch’. The votes he received in the gamewere the highest recorded for a single play-er in any game so far this season. Welldone, George!
The winner in October, for the secondmonth running, was our flying winger,Roman Michael-Percil, who polled over 20%of the votes cast. He produced ‘Man of theMatch’ performances in the home defeat toKingstonian and in the F.A.Cup win atHanwell Town. Congratulations again,Roman! (pictured below)
We must also again thank Glyn Balmer, ourProgramme Editor and Supporters TrustMembership Secretary and Phil Boston. After each game they publish the squad ofplayers involved in the match on the fans’forum, so we can all cast our vote for ourchoice of best player.

FA Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round
At Cappershotts.
Report from the Non League Paper
by Alex Roberts
Waltham Abbey 0-2 Grays Athletic
BEANEY DELIVERS ON HIS RETuRN
Kenny Beaney, a second-half substitute,
scored on his return from injury to help
Grays Athletic to victory at Waltham Abbey
in the FA Trophy second qualifying round.
The 28-year-old midfielder and skipper of
the Blues added to Harry Agombar’s early
effort to keep his side in the hat, as they
look to lift the FA Trophy for the third time
after back-to-back triumphs in 2005 and
2006.
It did not take long for Agombar, who left
Swindon Town in the summer, to open the
scoring. His cross-shot deceived goalkeeper
Anthony Page in the opening minute and
went over his head into the top corner.
Grays then soaked up some Abbey pressure
for the remainder of the first half, although
full back Tommy Cummings nearly made it
2-0 for the visitors on the stroke of half-time
when his strong effort hit the post with Page
well beaten.
But the second goal did arrive four minutes
into the second half when Beaney struck.
Playing his first match after returning to the
side following a previous hamstring strain
towards the end of Grays’ FA Cup fourth
qualifying round home draw with Welling
United on 25 October, Beaney ghosted in
unmarked from the left hand side of the box
and planted a neat side-foot firmly into the
bottom corner after a great turn and cross
from the right by Bradley Tomlinson.
Waltham put a good fight for the remain-
der of the game, but could not breach the
Blues’ defence as they slipped out of the
competition for another year.

Of Grays
Hello everybody and welcome to this
Ryman Premier game against Enfield Town.
In my last article, I was moaning about the
village of Mayland, where we now live. I
mentioned the locals have some strange
ways, parking on the road and leaving their
driveways empty etc, but a new personal
bugbear got me this week! The date was
Monday 16th November and one of my
neighbours already has a Christmas tree up
and decorated! I know there are plenty of
other religious festivals throughout the
year, but I have done my research (quick
bog in the window while out walking to the
pub) and it is definitely a Christmas tree! If
I put my tree up this week, I don't think it
would make December before I got fed up
with it! The only possible reason that I can
think of is that my neighbour must work in
retail and has already had her Christmas
decorations up at work since August!
Talking of shops, it is that time of year
again that I start online shopping. There is
no way that I'm plodding around Lakeside
when I can have everything delivered to my
work and then I don't run the risk of her
indoors finding out what I've bought when
she wants to get something out from the
wardrobe!
That said, online shopping is not without
its own setbacks! Entering your address
about five times then realising that you
wanted a separate billing and delivery
address! Some places even want you to
put your country in you address and you
have to do this from a drop down box. The
list is in alphabetical order so firstly I
search for “Britain”, no, then “England”, er
no, then “Great Britain”, still no, until even-
tually “United Kingdom” turns up! Then
guess what happens? I select United
Kingdom only to be told “sorry your
request has timed out”, so not only was it
an aptitude test to find out the correct
name of where I live, I'm also being pitted
against the clock! Think I'm going to move
to Albania next year, failing that, it defi-
nitely won't be Zimbabwe!
Talking of Christmas and shopping, I have
got to get Thanksgiving out of the way
first! It's basically Christmas Day without
the presents. I'm off to Connecticut to
meet the North American branch of GAFC
and Cara is taking their Supporters Trust
membership cards to present them in per-
son, well it is her brother and his young
family! Anyway, I have a few games of
golf, and beer sessions planned for over
there, plus will take time to do my article
for the FA Trophy game against Corinthian-
Casuals!
Enjoy the game and see you in December!

Ramblings
By

We're nearly at the midway point of theseason having played 27 games - at least31 more to go now - and the half-termreport isn't looking too shabby at themoment. After 17 League games we areenjoying our best spell in the RymanPremier League in our third campaign atthis level. We are still in the League Cupand the FA Trophy and after a bit of astumble we appear to have found our feetagain. We are approaching that time of theseason when it appears that the early sea-son positivity and investment throughoutthe division makes way for realism andausterity and the player-go-round starts upin earnest - there are already players ontheir 5th club this season - and results goall over the place. The division is alreadytight with just 9 points separating the top10 and 16 points separating the play-offplaces and the relegation zone and withteams having up to 7 games in hand ontheir rivals...you just can't take your eyesoff it!
It was recently revealed, probably toIndependent readers, that the Clubs thatlook down on the pyramid...to be fair theylook down on anything below UEFA bags ofcash...are bringing fewer players throughtheir academies. Many reasons are given, but possibly the most pointless and bizarrereason is when a child comes into theworld. If junior pops out at the start ofBlighty's academic year, their chances ofselection for progress are considerablyhigher than those of the sprogs unfortu-nate enough to be born in November or,heaven forbid, the following July. A studyrevealed, titter ye not, that older childrenare usually taller and more physicallydeveloped. Seriously? They spent moneyto work that out? It just so happens theydid and it turns out there are top flightacademy sides made up entirely of playersborn in September and October and selec-tion was based more on height and physi-cality than anything else. Sounds familiarand so typical of the mentality towardsplayer development in this country...Messiwould have stood little chance in England.
All is not lost though. It's all a tad unfair, apparently, so one suggested solution
being tested is 'bio banding' which involvesusing a complicated formula which factorsin the height of the players' parents todetermine which players play in whichgroup and gives those players waiting fortheir growth spurt more of an even chanceto push onwards and upwards.
It was recently revealed, not just toIndependent readers, that there is some-thing called non league football. Thisremarkable discovery was made by someformer footballers what was all born in1992 in the same hostipal room inMangechester. Salford was already knownto us Murkeyside folk because it has dockswhen it's 2,738 miles from the sea, butnow it's properly on the map because somehas-beens got a bit fed up of spending mil-lions of pounds on stuff and decided toinvent non league football by investing in aslice of a football Club and then selling halfof it to a foreign billionaire investor. Themedia frenzy has even risen above JurgenKlopp levels of embarrassing. Don't getme wrong, it is fantastic there is someattention on the non league game, but youwould think our wonderfully communityfocused Beeb would represent proper foot-ball in a balanced way that is good foreveryone involved. We live in hope!
It was recently revealed that if you areshort of excitement, have a spare hour andyou just happen to be in the vicinity ofLoughton or Waltham Abbey in the lateafternoon when the roads appear to beemptier then I can highly recommend thenumber 66 rollercoaster. At £3.50 returnfor grown-ups you will get the bestest, longest white knuckle ride this side of thelunatic conductores that hurtle around theCancun lagoon. After watching the Abbotshost the Millers recently I quite literallycouldn't wait to get back on the bus andspend 20 minutes dodging the ceiling, takeaway packaging and something thatlooked like it crawled out of a slurry pit. Before I wander off again I was returningfrom a-rambling recently and was waitingfor the usual delayed 'service' at the trainstation when I decided to get my pads outand get started on my notes. 1967: Foot-and-mouth slaughter rate soars
The number of animals slaughtered in thelatest epidemic of foot-and-mouth diseasehas reached a record high of 134,000.More than 70 fresh outbreaks were con-firmed today, bringing the total to 746since the first case last month. The epi-demic is now the worst this century.
There were 40 fresh cases in Cheshire, akey dairy-producing county at the centre ofthe epidemic. A further 13 were diagnosedin neighbouring Shropshire, where the firstoutbreak was reported. Northamptonshirealso confirmed its first case. The Ministryof Agriculture has issued farmers with fourmeasures which it says will help containthe epidemic:* Keep as many animals as possible undercover* Split livestock into separate units wherepracticable* Have all animals examined at least everyday* Keep people and vehicles off the farmsby arranging a farm-gate collection anddelivery service
Fred Peart, the Minister for Agriculture, told MPs the epidemic is being contained, despite the gravity of the situation. "If thepresent united effort is kept up we shallwin through," he said. The government isfollowing a ruthless slaughter policy, in linewith previous methods for dealing with thedisease. Under the policy, all the animalson a farm where an outbreak is confirmedare killed.
Some farmers have argued vaccinationwould be a more humane way of dealingwith the disease. The government, howev-er, believes it would cost too much andwould not cover all types of farm animal.
The government is committed to paying anestimated £8m in compensation to farmersafter the first month alone. But the NationalFarmers' Union points out that the actuallosses to the farmer are far higher. Apartfrom the lost income, there is also theincalculable loss caused by the destructionof a lifetime's work. Many of the animalsslaughtered come from long-establishedpedigree herds, built up over generations.Yesterday, 60 of the Duke of Westminster's300-strong Eaton herd of pedigree DairyShorthorns on one of his farms nearChester were slaughtered after the diseasewas confirmed there. The herd dates backto 1880, and included current show champi-ons.
It's still not known what caused the cur-rent outbreak, although veterinary officerssay investigations are proceeding. One the-ory is that the virus was brought into thecountry in imported frozen beef. Suggest-ions that the beef may have come fromArgentina, a key source of Britain's frozenbeef imports, are being strongly denied bythe Argentine government.

Today, we host an Enfield Town side look-ing for their first League win against theBlues since April 2012. In that game
Kenny Beaney, Joao Carlos and HarryAgombar all played for the Blues, whileTyler Campbell scored for the Towners andJordan Lockie also featured in a 3-0 win atRookery Hill. All five players are in con-tention to play this afternoon! In my timeat the Club I don't think we've had a poorgame between the two sides and I includethe ressies in that. The Towners had apoor start to the season with 5 points in 9games, but have since lost just one of thelast 8 League games and have one of thebest defensive records in the division...justas the Blues have rediscovered their scor-ing touch, so expect a battle. Promises tobe a decent game... Time to ram-ble on ..

ness of preparation and helped me cope withmy anger. Basically, he worked me out.‘I owe him a lot. He challenged me to believein myself and changed me, in a footballsense, by sending me to study the systems atAjax and Anderlecht. That’s when I realisedI was miles behind. I thought I was a coach, but needed to do so much more to justify thattitle.
‘I watched how they were forceful with theirplayers, but gave them leeway to think forthemselves. Their coaches only step in if thepoint they are trying to make doesn’t comeacross. Afterwards they go and have a beer. It’s very relaxed, jeans, T-shirts, players andcoaches talking about football. There’s trustand respect. The more I looked into theEuropean side of the game the more I start-ed to see a completely different aspect offootball. We attach too much importance totradition in this country. There’s no definitiveway of playing; what can we learn from othernations? How and why are they progressing?‘The one thing I’ve worked really hard on isthe emotional outpouring. I was an emotion-al player who showed passion and commit-ment, but as a manager and a coach you’vegot to lead by a different example. There aretimes you feel the frustration of a fan, whenthat shot just misses, or a chance is lost, butthe approach needs to be more intelligent, because the environment is changing.
‘I played in a promotion-winning team atColchester in 1998. It was a group of drivenindividuals, who developed a real cama-raderie. But what I could never comprehendas a player was why I would always have aheadache after playing against a PremierLeague team, even in a pre-season friendly.‘I’m sure the lower down you go, a player canonly process one movement, one sequence ofplay. Top players process three or four. Theysee it quicker, think quicker and that’s whythey are where they are. To maintain thatlevel of processing information, you’re goingto have to train your brain.
‘I want to improve, further educate myself.I watched Roberto Martinez of Everton put ona couple of training sessions. He taught methat the key to bringing out knowledge is howyou interact with people. He was authorita-tive with his information, but imparted hisknowledge with such enthusiasm. You can’tbe monotone these days. Top managersadapt and move. I like to think I’m a for-ward-thinking young manager, but some peo-ple, in their ignorance, will argue I can’t bebecause I’ve operated in the bottom half ofLeague One. We have to get them to open
their minds a bit more. Don’t judge peopleon who or what they are, or where they’vebeen.’
Being sacked for the first time is a rite ofpassage. When it happened to Waddock, hewas counselled by Bobby Campbell, the for-mer Fulham, Portsmouth and Chelsea manag-er, who is a trusted member of RomanAbramovich’s inner circle. Dunne drew uponthe advice of Tony Pulis, but was still comingto terms with the chasm that separates ideal-ism and pragmatism. ‘Harry Redknapp askedme how many first-team games I’d done. Itold him just over a hundred. He said: “Welldone. If you pass seventy-five then you’reprobably going to stick in the game.” I toldhim he’d made my day. I magpie bits andpieces from all the top managers, but thebest piece of advice I’ve received is not tomodel myself on one individual. I try to bemyself. We work hard down the Leagues, toprogress through the system and people tellme to be more selfish. They think I’m madwhen I say there is more to the game thanwinning. You are judged continually as anindividual and loss of status is massive. You’re told, “Get to the top. Just try and getto the top.”
‘Be careful what you wish for. I see peopleripping the heart out of a Club for their ownends and it does my head in. I suppose I’mtrying to be rational in modern society, whenrationality doesn’t exist. It’s mental. You’rea manager and you ask about the long-termgoal. It’s “Just f*****g get promoted. That’s what we want.” OK, I’ll get you pro-moted, but eventually it is still “See youlater.”
Waddock was not around to share Dunne’sswirling emotions, but he had captured thesubtext of the conversation: ‘We’re all thesame, when the ball is rolled for the firstgame of the season. We’re all going to getpromoted. We’re all going to be successfuland progress our careers. We’re all going toget the sack eventually.’
Neither knew it at the time, but their pathswould cross again, which I will cover inanother piece from the book for your MatchDay Programme, later in the season.Meanwhile, enjoy today’s game as the youngmanagers of Enfield and Grays Athletic,Bradley Quinton and Mark Bentley, continuein their endeavours to make their way on upin the game.

Supporters Trust
First, I would like to say it has not beena great couple of weeks for three of oursupporters. Carol Tillett, Steve Allen(Muttley) and Alan Mills have all beenunwell, but I am pleased to report that allare on the mend now and are in ourthoughts for a speedy recovery and areturn to our games once they are “matchfit”.
As this is our 125th year, the Club, sup-ported by the Supporters Trust, is puttingon a grand Presentation Night at the end ofthe season to celebrate such a greatachievement. This will be held at theLangdon Hills Golf Club with 120 seatsavailable at £25 each. Full details will fol-low soon. We will be looking for sponsorsfor the cost of tickets for our players andany donations would be gratefullyreceived.
The Club is also looking for someone torun coach trips for a number of our awaygames. Perhaps this is an opportunity forone of the younger supporters to step for-ward, or possibly two supporters whomight “team up” and work together? Your Supporters Trust sponsored our lasthome game, the Essex Senior Cup tieagainst Witham Town, on Wednesday 11November. The donation to the Clubtowards the costs of staging the game waspaid for by three supporters and we thankthem for their help. It was a shame welost on penalties and missed out on theopportunity to progress in the competition. It was still pleasing to see Jake Hutchingsreceive the Man of the Match award for hisperformance on the night. It was his sec-ond award after receiving the accoladeagainst Biggleswade Town in the F ATrophy win on 31 October, soon after hisreturn to the Club, from Heart ofMidlothian in Scotland. Hard to believethat he is still only 19 and even harder tobelieve it is nearly three years since hemade his first team debut! Well done,Jake.
Many of our games are sponsored for therest of the season – see the centre pagesof this programme - but please see me orSteve Skinner if you, or your company, isinterested in receiving details of how youcan get involved in supporting the Club inthis important way.
It’s back to the League today after ourrecent success in the FA Trophy atWaltham Abbey last Saturday. A big wel-come to our visitors from North London,Enfield Town, the first wholly supportersowned and run Club in the country. Wealso welcome Anthony Auger, ourSupporters Trust Treasurer and MatchSponsor for the day.
A final thought from me as I now handback the reins to Glyn Balmer, ouresteemed Programme Editor, who has nowsuccessfully moved house, has his internetconnected and is busting a blood vessel toget back to writing this piece on behalf ofyour Supporters Trust. For those whowatched the recent TV documentary aboutthe "Class of '92" ex Manchester Unitedstars who have bought non league SalfordCity, I thought that the real stars were theClub volunteers. Dwindling volunteer num-bers is becoming one of non league'sbiggest issues.
Small Clubs up and down the country arestruggling through as people are stretchedever thinner to cover the must-do jobs.Increasingly busy lives mean fewer willinghelpers are giving up their free time, unpaid, for nothing but their love of foot-ball. The draw of an evening sat on thesofa watching the Champions League orThe Apprentice seems to be proving toomuch for some. Players don't registerthemselves, tea doesn't serve itself andthe last one out has to turn the light off.We have been very lucky at Grays, espe-cially since we lost the Recreation Groundin 2010. Volunteers have rallied round tohelp us through difficult times. But itappears to be getting more difficult. Onmatch day, there are the same few reliablefolk, carrying out the essential jobs. Weget very little new blood coming through tohelp. I hope our supporters who read thismay think about offering their servicesover a wide range of tasks which we canidentify to those who don't want to see ourgreat Club struggle to a point where, liketoo many other Clubs, our very survivalmay be in doubt.
Thank you and enjoy the game.David Barnes, Secretary, GraysAthletic 1890 Supporters Trust
months’ time, I could really enjoy this time,go to games, build up my information on play-ers. But this could last a day, or last for ever. This is the worrying thing, because you knowwhat you want to do, but you might not getthe opportunity to do it.’
Fate had randomly bonded him with Dunne,11 years his junior, but linked by the threadsof allegiance, resilience and availability. Theywere united by a sobering set of statistics: ittakes a sacked manager an average of 18months to find another job. 58 per cent offirst-time managers never get back into workwhen they are discarded. Around 35 per centof dismissals are the result of a breakdown inthe relationship between manager and chair-man or Club owner. Dunne was told to staystrong by Tony Pulis, a family friend and cur-rent West Brom boss. Dunne had spent 18years at Colchester, as player, youth coach, assistant manager, caretaker manager and, finally, first-team manager.
He had been forced to grow up fast on theterraced streets of Inchicore, a Dublin suburb. He was a self-reliant boy, who became theman of the house at 13, when his father died.He had yearned to be a football manager formthe age of nine, when, as a Liverpool fan, hestood in front of his bedroom mirror and con-ducted imaginary interviews in character, asBob Paisley and Joe Fagan. His school friendseulogised Kenny Dalglish, the player; he pre-ferred to analyse Kenny Dalglish, the player-manager. He left his home in Ireland at 15, togo for a trial at Gillingham, a town of which hehad only vaguely heard. He accepted anapprenticeship without telling his mother andhis first manager, Damien Richardson, becamea surrogate father. ‘I left my Mum by herself, but when I got there I had this sense of I’vegot away. Damien was really inspirational.Almost as soon as I was in England, he let mecoach the kids in the car park at the back ofthe stadium. ‘I’m a teacher. Managementthese days is teaching. Coaching is teaching. My approach comes from my time as a youthcoach, because that was when I was teachinglife skills. I tell young players the biggestcrime is not fulfilling their potential, not justin football, but in life. To get the best out ofa player, you need to understand the person.Obviously there will be times when he choos-es not to engage and that’s when you have tobe upfront and talk through why he’s not inthe team, or why he may or may not have toleave. I tell the truth, because I’ve been liedto as a player. When that happens you losetrust.
‘The human side of the game is so impor-tant. I lost my father very early. So I knowwhat being brought up by a single parent is
like. In football, we go to the inner cities, thesprawl, to look for talented players, so weneed to empathise with their circumstances.‘Everyone wants to be judged by their status.Who’s got the best house, best car, bestclothes, best watch, best phone. Do we needto be so shallow? We have a responsibility inthe football industry to help the young menwithin it.’
His pride in his philosophy was tangiblewhen he showed Michael Calvin around thenew training ground at Colchester, ten daysbefore he was sacked. In the dressing room, which he intended to be a monument to hisinclusivity; instead of decorating the wallswith the usual motivational posters, he hadasked his squad to define themselves as agroup and present their expectations of theircoaches. Their value judgements were printedon sheets of A4 paper, placed above the pegson which clothes were expected to be hungneatly:“This is not a holiday camp….Respect for eachother….Consistency of emotions….Don’t takeit to heart….Continuity….Communication...Professionalism….Positivity….We look afterourselves.”
They were meaningful words, thoughtfulsentiments, devalued so comprehensively byresults that they were barely worth the paperon which they were written. Since Dunne hasgone and a new manager was setting thetone, the messages were historical curiosities, hieroglyphics on a Pharaoh’s tomb. Dunneretained his principles, but he had lost hisplatform. ‘When you’re a first-time manager,it is where do I go from here? I have noproblem talking about that. It has taken meten years to get a philosophy together. Thenyou see it fall apart in front of your eyes. Youthink, I’ve worked so hard for this. I’ll keepon working, but it’s getting away from me.Everything I’ve worked my whole life for, everything I believe in, is now judged on arun of results.’
The hierarchical structure of football invitesa culture of bullying and casual contempt.Dunne has never forgotten arriving, as ayoung coach at Colchester, to find his person-al effects in a cardboard box, thrown into acorridor without explanation or apologybecause a staff member, aligned to a newmanager, commandeered his office. The con-trast with Aidy Boothroyd’s maturity, when hebecame Colchester’s manager, was marked.
‘I was caretaker manager when Aidy got thejob. He impressed me straightaway with hisknowledge of the players, the staff and every-thing else to do with the Club. He does hishomework. He taught me about thorough-

Enfield
Town FC
Formed on 23rd June 2001, Enfield Town
FC started life in the Essex Senior League
in 2001-02. The club finished runners-up in
that first season before winning the league
championship the following year. Their
time spent in the ESL was successful, with
two championships, two league cups, a
Middlesex Charity Cup and wins in the
Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy and
Capital Counties Feeder Leagues Trophy
finals to show for their efforts.
Following promotion to the Southern
League (East) in 2005, the Towners had a
terrific first season at that level, before
eventually losing to Wivenhoe Town in the
promotion play-offs. The following season,
following a move into the Ryman League
for 2006-07, the club again finished 3rd –
this time losing out via the play-offs to AFC
Sudbury. In 2009-10, the club yet again
only just missed out on promotion, being
beaten this time by Concord Rangers in the
play-off final.
The club originally played at Brimsdown
Rovers' Goldsdown Road ground in a
ground share arrangement. In October
2008, however, Enfield Council announced
a deal with the club allowing it to relocate
to the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.
Realising a long held dream, the club
worked closely with the Council to see the
old athletics stadium restored and upgrad-
ed to be able to host Ryman League foot-
ball. This finally provided the club with a
home of its own a short distance from the
former stadium in Southbury Road, with a
capacity of 2,500.
While retaining a running track as a train-
ing facility for local use, the club has been
able to provide an atmospheric environ-
ment. The Stadium was formally opened in
November 2011 with a match against a
Tottenham Hotspur XI in front of nearly a
thousand spectators. Following the move
to the new ground, the team’s form was
excellent and there was a very close run-in
with eventual champions Leiston for the
2011-12 Ryman 1 North title. Despite
beating Leiston 1-0 late on, they had to
settle for promotion the hard way, beating
Grays Athletic and Needham Market in two
exciting play-off games.
In 2012-13, seeking to consolidate in the
Ryman League Premier Division for the
first time, the club finished in 16th posi-
tion, although safety was not guaranteed
until the final month of the season. 2013-
14 began with some promising results, but
a mid-table position going into the autumn
soon turned into a battle for survival.
Manager Steve Newing, who had guided
the club into unchartered territory with
promotion the previous year, was replaced
in the December by ex-Enfield FC manager
George Borg, who had also had proven
managerial success with clubs such as
Chelmsford City, Aldershot Town, Horn-
church and Braintree. Safety was secured
on the final day of the season with a 2-1
away win at Cray Wanderers.
Bradley Quinton succeeded George Borg
as first team manager in August 2014 and,
during his first few months at the helm, he
won the first of his Ryman League Premier
Division Manager of the Month awards, and
the team won two Macron performance of
the month awards, for 3-0 wins at
Maidstone and at Margate, both of whom
ended up as promoted clubs. Such was the
team’s improvement in fortunes that a 4-0
home win against Billericay Town in mid-
February equalled the previous season’s
full points tally, and eventually a play-off
place was achieved. However, a crucial 3
points were deducted at the end of the
season in controversial circumstances and
a final league placing of 7th was the out-
come. Continued over

LIVING ON THE VOLCANO – SECRETS OFSuRVIVING AS A FOOTBALL MANAGERI have been reading a book written by
Michael Calvin, chief sports writer with theIndependent on Sunday, which exposes thelives of football managers from the lower lev-els to the Premier League. Through thecolumns of this Match Day Magazine, I amincluding some of his unique insights about atrade where managers require ruthlessnessand empathy, idealism and cunning. I offermy take on his findings and acknowledge hisoutstanding work in the process.
I have already covered stories about MartinLing, Aidy Boothroyd and Gareth Ainsworth, managers still in their forties, who havealready experienced significant highs andlows in their careers – as players and man-agers.
Today, it’s about Gary Waddock and JoeDunne. Waddock is a 53 year-old, who as aplayer appeared for six different Clubs andearned 21 international caps for the Republicof Ireland. Jack Charlton controversiallyomitted him from their 1990 World Cupsquad. Dunne played as a defender forGillingham and Colchester United, but hisplaying career was ended prematurely aftersuffering a series of injuries.
Here are their stories.
Bad news travels fast. The ringtone on GaryWaddock’s mobile phone, the type of klaxonwhich once warned a submarine crew of animminent dive, signalled another good manhad gone. It was 10.57am on 1 September2014 and the news was that Joe Dunne hadbeen sacked by Colchester United. Dunnewas praised as a ‘Colchester legend’ byChairman Robbie Cowling, a recruitment spe-cialist who made great play of his matureworking relationship with a man he describedas ‘a remarkable servant’ of the League OneClub. Dunne’s fate was sealed by five con-secutive defeats.
Waddock had met his most recent downfallin July 2014. He was only three days intopre-season training when he became theinnocent victim of football’s version of adrive-by shooting, his replacement as OxfordUnited manager by Michael Appleton follow-ing a sudden change of ownership. It hadbeen a turbulent half an hour; GrahamKavanagh’s sacking by Carlisle United hadbeen announced at 10.30 am. Waddockexplains: ‘The news flashes up and thenagents and friends ring you. It’s the natureof the business; it’s horrible, because you arerelying on other people to lose their jobs so
you can have an opportunity to go back in. Iknow Joe and Graham. They’re good peopleand it is very sad for them. It’s cruel, butthat’s the way it is. I’m quite realistic andhonest with myself. When I’ve been sackedI’ve always asked, what did you learn fromthat? If you get another opportunity, wherewill that be? There’s no point me looking inthe Premier League or Championship. If I doget a job, it could be at Conference level, because I got Aldershot promoted, or aLeague Two Club looking to get into LeagueOne, as I did at Wycombe. Geographically,Carlisle is a long way, but I’m very muchabout my career and if it means having tomove, I’ll move. Colchester want to bringtheir young players through. I’ve had experi-ence of that, so, yeah, I’ll look at that too.’
He was too late for Colchester. The vacan-cy was filled at 5.30pm that day. Regimechange was clinical and suspiciously smooth.Dunne and his assistant, Mark Kinsella, werereplaced by Tony Humes, the Club’s Head ofYouth and Richard Hall, promoted from theUnder 21s. A new recruitment structure andstrategy were simultaneously introduced.Cowling, who had been reducing the playingbudget by £300,000 each season, signalledhis intention to stop putting money into theClub from 2016. Waddock was one of over 80applicants, made the shortlist, but was over-looked in favour of Keith Curle, who had beenout of work since being sacked by NottsCounty in February 2013. He knew he had ‘nochance’ at Oxford, once it became clear therestructure there would involve a newChairman and Chief Executive. ‘They hadevery right to bring in their own man. It’stheir Club. I don’t take it personally. I neverhave done. I move on very quickly.’
His most poignant duty was to apologise tothose players who were suddenly vulnerable, since they were on trial that week. Some hadrejected opportunities to go elsewhere, because they believed in him. They trustedin his track record, especially in straightenedcircumstances at Wycombe, where GarethAinsworth still referred to him as ‘Gaffer’.Football subtly closes ranks around its own intimes of stress. Waddock had worked in thePremier League, overseeing academy stan-dards at Fulham, West Ham, Tottenham andChelsea, after being sacked by Wycombe.
‘I’ve never spoken to anybody about thesack. I think you stay clear of that. I’venever asked people, “What did you do whenyou were out?” You take it for granted thatyou get out there, to see and be seen.‘If I knew I was getting another job in six

the club achieved FA Charter Standard
Community Club status and then, a year
later, received the Middlesex FA Charter
Standard Community Club of the Year
award. June 2014 saw the launch of a
Community Share scheme, with the back-
ing of Supporters Direct, in order to help
the club progress further both on and off
the field.

gate, 883 against Hitchin Town, along the
way.

He con-tinued his tour of the top level of non-League football when he signed for YorkCity in July 2009. The following season wasprobably the best that Jimmy had inEnglish football as The Minstermen foughttheir way to the Blue Square PremierPromotion Play-Off Final against OxfordUnited at Wembley Stadium. During thegame, Jimmy came on as a substitute forNeil Barratt nine minutes from the end asYork City were chasing a 1-2 deficit. And aformer Grays Athletic player who had comeon as a substitute did score a decisive goal! Unfortunately for Jimmy and his OxfordUnited team-mates, it was Alfie Potter whohad come on for Oxford United and made it3-1 in injury-time. But Jimmy signed a sixmonths extension to his contract and atthe end of it in December 2010 he negoti-ated a move to Moroccan Champions,Wydad Casablanca. This fell through andhe returned to Europe, going on trial withLincoln City of League Two.

The Non-League
Paper
With
Sam Elliott
WE’VE all met one of them. You know, theperson who thinks they are being reallyhelpful but ultimately they are just creat-ing chaos for everyone else. That’s exactlyhow most of Non-League football feelsabout the Football League right now.
They say the road to hell is paved withgood intentions. For the National Leagueclubs they are sitting between the deviland the deep blue sea. On one hand, moremoney is being injected into the lower lev-els. That’s always a positive, except it’scoming to just two clubs in the form ofparachute payments – and the fear is thateveryone else is going to get left laggingbehind.
That’s paraphrasing, and, as it happens, putting it quite nicely. Two leading figureswithin the league are frankly foaming atthe mouth. The issue is that the FootballLeague, with a fair element of self-con-gratulation, announced that those clubsrelegated from League Two will be comingdown with an additional £500,000 in theirback pocket.
Those joining the Conference will now fallwith £474,000 in their first season, and intheir second season they will also have£237,000 planted into their accounts. Nice.
Riches, many feel, earned for failure. Akick-back so juicy that Lee Harding, thelong-serving Braintree chairman, believesis almost a temptation to cut costs atFootball League level and bank a nicecheque to come on down. Harding feels thesituation will destroy the game at thislevel. The reason is a footballing one, clubslike his Braintree – eyeing a place in the 92after building organically over a number ofyears – will have next to no chance of
achieving their dreams.Neither will the likes of Dover, Gateshead
or Woking – and those ex-League clubs stilltrying to get back up, Wrexham, Grimsbyet al, are now up against it even more.
National League clubs take in around only£40,000 for being a part of the league. That means whoever comes down will havea half-a-million head start. I watchedCheltenham for the first time last Tuesdayand they were smashing. Guiseley had noanswer as Gary Johnson’s side rolled themover 5-0. If they beat Forest Green Roverstoday then they’ll be firm favourites to gostraight back up.
They made the point excellently. Youdon’t need a huge helping hand. Promotionneeds to be earned. Fact is, if the Robinsleft their relegation another 12 months, they could afford over the two years theyare enjoying these parachute payments, three more top class players for this leveleach season. Johnson endorses Harding’sview. He wasn’t speaking out of bitternesshaving not had that extra £474,000 tosplash on his squad. He cares about thegame, he loves the romantic notion that aclub the size of the Braintree chairman’sone can rise through the Leagues likeBurton Albion have.
He doesn’t feel it should be suffocating, and only the rich ones given a chance withprogression stunted with no sign of threeup, three down. And he wants answers asto why they are changing a system thatworks. Johnson is doing a wonderful job ofperfectly illustrating the foolhardy FootballLeague’s irrational thinking, and why thishand out is just not welcome.
