PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 2 2018 has been another successful term for Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High
School. We have participated in many successful events and celebrations that have involved the whole
school community, including our Iftar, Mother’s Day morning tea, NAPLAN examinations, sports carnivals
and excursions. Thanks to all staff, students and community members who have supported these events.
Students were all issued with their semester 1 reports this week. I read through all student reports and
look forward to recognising those students who have been working consistently well across many subjects.
An academic recognition assembly will take place in Education Week, week 3 term 3. Parents and students
have access to the portal where they can get copies of reports.
We finalised the installation of air-conditioning for classrooms so that we now have heating and cooling.
We look forward to a more pleasant learning experience as we approach the end of term 4 heat later in
the year. This was a school funded project that took several years in preparation and planning.
We are currently looking at the construction of a Covered Outdoor Learning Area for the basketball courts
on the back oval, so that students have an outdoor space for all weather conditions. This is also a school
funded project that we are hoping will be finalised this year, at least the planning stage.
I would particularly like to recognise the work of our staff and students involved in the Ultimo Dance
Festival - Ms T Wright and Dance Ensemble, and “A Midsummer Night's Dream” production - Mr M.
Mitchell and a range of mainstream and ensemble students with support from the CAPA faculty. Our
students excelled in both and demonstrated that students from Granville South CAPA HS do create success
stories. Opportunities provided for students at Granville South such as these, are ones that are possible
due to the dedication of many staff and the commitment from our talented students.
I wish everyone a restful school holiday and look forward to term 3. It will be an eventful term, with
parent-teacher meetings, course selections for years 10 into 11 and years 8 into 9, education week events,
an open day and HSC Trial examinations and graduation.

Well done to all students who have achieved pleasing results in their reports for Semester 1. Now is the time to reflect on how they can achieve better outcomes by putting more time and effort into their studies and improving their strategies and skills. Our school celebrates students' success through our weekly assemblies this included students who have displayed positive behaviour for learning and showed engagement in their learning by attending all their classes on time and being on task. Congratulations to our Years 7 and 9 students who have sat for their NAPLAN tests. Year 7 students have an opportunity to further develop their learning skills prior to the NAPLAN exams and hopefully they will do better in Year 9 in 2020. I would like to wish our Year 11 students all the best for their Preliminary studies and hope their efforts, time and study skills are all put into practice to ensure their success in preparation for the HSC. I would like to mention the hard work of Mr Scott (Year 11 Adviser and Ms Platirahos Assistant Year 11 Adviser) for the academic review meetings with parents and students to discuss their academic progress, attendance, any concerns and future pathways. A letter was emailed out to all parents and students to further discuss this matter. Students are encouraged to attend our homework centre on Monday afternoons in the library from 3:15-4:15. Please pick up a permission note from the front office, sign it by parents/ carers and return it Mr Woollams. Senior studies tuitions are held every Friday afternoon periods 5&6 in the CIRCLE. A reminder to our students to follow the LEARN expectations. Arrive to school on time, attend all classes and be on task, stay in class and wear our full school uniform with pride. Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday. Looking forward to a very productive Term 3 celebrating our students' success and working together by creating success stories and a positive learning environment for our school community. What a lovely introduction to Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School it has been! I have definitely felt like a new Year 7 student at times, trying to learn room numbers, teacher and student names, new school rules, new school bell times and adjusting to a whole new school culture. One thing that has definitely made it easier has been the help of all staff and students at Granville South CAPAHS. Staff and students have been incredibly welcoming and helpful (especially when I have been lost and looking for a particular classroom or block). Our school community is incredibly vibrant and diverse. I have been fortunate to experience the vibrancy and enthusiasm of all our students this term and I am incredibly proud to call Granville South CAPAHS my new home. As we progress through this educational journey together, I look forward to working with the staff and students at Granville South CAPAHS in achieving at their highest potential. A also look forward to working with all of our parents and the wider community in strengthening our relationships and providing you all with the best possible learning environment. Our enthusiastic staff work endlessly to provide your children with a safe and respectful learning environment that empowers our students to become successful and responsible learners. Please stay safe these holidays. I am looking forward to a vibrant term 3. Kind Regards, Mr Gharibeh

School fees The payment of school fees is gratefully acknowledged. School contributions and subject charges may be made at the office or via the school website using the Parent Online Portal. Payments may be paid in instalments. EFTPOS facility is available. Family Details The School needs to ensure its records are up to date at all times. Whenever there is a change to your family details, for example a change of phone number, or a change to an emergency contact, the School must be informed. This can be done by completing a new Student/Family Details Form which can be obtained at the school Front Office, or by ringing the School. The School uses email as its main form of communication so it is vital that this address is kept up-to-date. In the event that your child gets sick during a school day, we will contact you on the telephone and therefore it is very important that your phone numbers are always current. School Uniform Terms 2 and 3 are the terms we experience cooler weather. The school jumper can be purchased from either Lowes in Merrylands or Oz Fashions in Granville. Hoodies are NOT an acceptable item of clothing to wear to school. Medication If your child has a medically diagnosed condition that has not previously been advised to the school, or there has been a change to their condition, please contact the School. Medication is only able to be administered to students if prescribed and instructed by their doctor. Please contact the School Office if you have any question on giving medication to your child during school hours. Air Conditioning All staff and students have enjoyed the benefit of air conditioning in classrooms during this cold Term 2. It was installed during the Term 1 school holidays and has made a difference on these cold winter days. I am sure we will all be equally grateful for this great improvement to the School during the hot summers we will have in the future. S Hill Business Manager

This year's Creative and Performing Arts Showcase, to be held at Parramatta's Riverside Theatres on Tuesday 7th August looks to be another exciting GSCAPAHS event! This year called "This is Me" our showcase will feature students from our Circus, Dance, Drama, and Music Ensembles as they perform alongside the visual representations of our students' work in the Visual Arts Ensemble. This year we will also celebrate both work of our students in junior CAPA subjects, including REAL classes, our Pasifika Ensemble, our Support Unit Dance Crew, and of course our senior Dancers, Actors and Musicians. Our "Riverside" show is always an exciting event and this year student representatives have also been involved in the "behind the scenes" work of our Production Team. These students have brought some great ideas to the table and much of the success of this year's show will be as a result of their hard work and dedication..
We hope to see you as we celebrate the outstanding success stories of our students in the Creative and Performing Arts at "This is Me". Tickets are only $10 each, and can be purchased from the front office.

Year 12 Biology Excursion to Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick
On Thursday 14th June, our Year 12 Biology students and Mr Azzopardi visited Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick for a series of HSC lectures and workshops in order to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the course content.
The lectures and workshops assisted our senior students in their understanding of biology in a real world context. Students attended two interactive workshops including Communication and Maintaining a Balance/Search for Better Health.
Our students were privileged to listen to several engaging lectures delivered by a variety of health care professionals including a nurse, an ophthalmologist, an audiologist and a geneticist. The hands-on workshop allowed students the opportunity to measure their blood pressure, use a stethoscope, otoscope and ophthalmoscope.
Congratulations to the following students for their attendance and excellent participation and representation of our school during the excursion: Abas Alassadi, Hamze El-Hallak, Suzie Fadil Waheib, Jamshid Qasemi and Monika Vesse. Mr Azzopardi HT Science

The Archibull Prize
This year our Year 7 and 8 REAL students were given the opportunity to participate in the Archibull Prize 2018.
The Archibull Prize is a world renowned program where teachers and students work together with
Australian farmers to learn all about the agriculture industry and use this knowledge to create a multimedia presentation and an artwork on a life-sized fiberglass bull! All participating schools were given a primary food or fibre industry to explore. Ours is the Cotton Industry!
This term we had the pleasure of meeting with a young cotton farmer named Emma who shared stories about her experiences as a farmer. She also informed us about the production of cotton and all about the environment she lives and works in. Students were able to understand the kinds of resources required to clothe, feed and power a nation.
Our fibreglass bull (affectionately known as Archie) has already made a positive impact on our school community and is ready for his makeover! Students in the REAL class have begun engaging in art, design, creativity and teamwork activities in order to share their new knowledge and skills through art. We can’t wait to show you the finished Archie!
Feel free to follow our journey with Archie on Instagram: archie_at_gscapahs

Iftar - Arabic Drumming Performance:
The Arabic Drummers were given the opportunity to perform at this year’s Iftar dinner at GSCAPAHS on
Wednesday 23rd May. Khoder Eid, Ali El-Hami, Jawad Hamed, Emaddine Sowaid and Bilal El-Afshal, all from
Year 7 performed at their very first Iftar school dinner. This performance demonstrated their rhythmic and
listening skills in celebration of breaking fast. I am extremely proud of their performance and look forward
to future performances.
Mr Akele.
The Dance Ensemble performed at their first major performance of the year on Friday the 22nd of June, as a
part of the In the Spotlight Dance Festival. All the dancers performed beautifully, showing off their amazing
talents and took the audience through their emotional, moving piece ‘Collide’ that was a standout
performance of the night.

The third round of the Sydney West Boys Football Tournament saw Granville South CAPA HS taking on Glenwood HS. Glenwood came into the match as strong favourites and they didn’t take long for them to score their first goal of the match.

This term, year 12 Food Technology students investigated the new food product development lifecycle.
Students were give a design context and an economic environment within which their company was to
operate. Using this information, students were asked to design and develop a new food product that used
the Berbere spice from Ethiopia. Students made the spice mix, investigated their markets and justified
their selection of the new product type based on the external and internal drivers assigned to them.
Students completed a Design Brief Analysis, generated a recipe for their new product, specified a product
formulation, experimented and evaluated the recipe, and developed a pricing and marketing strategy.
Product development ranged from Halal preservative free spiced lamb sausages to Spiced Chicken
Schnitzel though to ’Fresh Ready to Eat ‘meals.
Below are images of the foods products made by this Yr 12 group AND it all tasted fantastic!

The REAL project An Inspiring Life on Screen has unveiled a couple of talented “storytellers” and
“filmmakers”, namely Laila (Lily) Lakmas and Jennah Frankel. Although all the students who participated in
this project worked consistently with enthusiasm, these two students were successful in completing their
project to the final stage. This success was due to their relentless efforts both in class, during lunch, as well
as many additional hours completed at home.
All the students delved into some deep, thought-provoking questions while researching and writing an
inspiring biography. This inquiry based learning project posed students the challenge of exploring
questions such as: What defines someone as ‘inspiring’? What qualities can you attribute to someone
considered ‘inspiring’? Is ‘resilience’ [bounce back/never give up] such a quality? Can you show inner
strength & inspire/bring change by being gentle, calm, kind? “Resilience in the face of adversity”, Is this
statement true? Can being tough, not giving up get you through tough times, and can that end up creating
something great in your life - perhaps something that even inspires others? Or is it that adversity (those
tough times in life) brings out our dormant courage/determination, which can drive you to do the
extraordinary?
In pursuit of such answers, Jennah produced an insightful
iMovie on the inspiring and legendary actor, Marilyn
Monroe, adding footage and a voice-over.
Lily chose her muse, Aanisa Vylet, who happens to be her aunty, a well-respected actor, screenwriter,
producer, teacher and linguist. Lily’s film is composed of an in-depth interview of her aunty, along with a
collection of photos.
Both students should be commended on their outstanding work. These films will be showcased during
Education Week.

SRC REPORT
Term Two has been a busy term for the SRC/SLG team.
SRC/SLG students worked in teams over several lunch times and before school to
promote and successfully sell all the Red Nose Day merchandise sent to the school,
raising over $300 for this important cause. The SRC team would like to thank everyone
in our school community who generously supported this fundraiser.
Several SRC/SLG students volunteered their time to attend two Iftar events.
On May 23rd, Atelina Rakuli, Jakob Kaihea, Siu-Ki-Moana Finau, Jael Meki, Rayan Obeid and Sarah Hello
attended the Iftar Dinner. These students helped greet special guests and parents to the event, helped set
up the hall, as well as cleaned up after the event was over. They are to be commended for all their efforts
in assisting in such an important event for the school. Also, on May 31st, Rose Hadaway, Sydney Malu and
Jennah Frankel attended an Iftar fundraising function at the Granville Youth and Community Centre,
where they had the opportunity to get a first-hand insight in the processes involved at an official
fundraiser. Our students’ positive behaviour and excellent social skills need to be acknowledged.
Macarthur Girls’ High School Prefect Cluster
On 22nd May, Jakob Kaihea, Zainab Al-Faham and
Joshua Latukefu had the privilege of attending
Macarthur Girls High School’s Prefect Cluster. This
school visit provided our student leaders an opportunity
to network and share what qualities make a successful
leader. Students were able to exchange ideas and
become inspired.
Joshua Latukefu, Zainab Al-Faham and Jakob Kaihea
“Visiting the Macarthur Girls’ High School I was very interested to see how a different school ran their
SRC/SLG groups. One of the major things I took away from the visit was how this large student body of
leaders advertised their events. I learned how important it is to make an impact (even if a bit “cringey”)
when promoting an event/fundraiser, so that it sticks in people’s minds. It was also great to see that the
SRC and SLG had close working relationships with teachers and that everyone in those groups were
committed to their role. I was impressed with the high level of organization and I definitely took away
some ideas and skills that could be useful for our school.” - Jakob Kaihea

Prairiewood High School 2018 Student Leadership Conference
On 25th May, Zainab Al-Faham and Jamal Issa attended the 7th Annual Prairiewood High School
Leadership Conference, which focused on team building activities and interesting presentations. Our
students represented the school in a positive manner and made new friends along the way. It was a great
day overall.
Auburn Girls’ High School Prefect Cluster
On June 26th, SRC students Analeta Rakuli, Elizabeth Brown and Zainab Al-Faham attended this
leadership and networking opportunity, where they were
warmly welcomed by the school SRC student body. There
were team-building activities, a variety of topics were
discussed and ideas were exchanged. Throughout the
evening there was an infectious enthusiasm and positive
energy, which left our students highly inspired and keen to
try some of these initiatives at our school.
Analeta Rakuli, Elizabeth Brown and Zainab Al-Faham
“Attending these clusters has helped me with my confidence and allowed me to be further committed to
my role as an SRC student of Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School.”

Another term has come to an end and I would like to express my gratitude to all parents and community members who have participated and supported our school events that occurred over term 2. On the 23rd of May 2018, Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School hosted yet another very pleasant and successful Ramadan Iftar. It is with great honour having to say that this event was proudly sponsored by Human Appeal Australia. It is always wonderful to see our diverse community coming together and sharing a meal. We highly appreciate all donations made on the night which will go towards a water well in the name of Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School. For all our lovely mothers out there that joined us and celebrated Mother’s day together here at school, we hope you consider donating your time again in future events as your presence at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School is truly valued. ‘Life does not come with a manual, it comes with a mother’. I look forward to seeing you in all in term 3. Ms Saedaldeen Community Liaison Officer
