June 2017 Vol. 91, No. 6

Dear friends:

Last week, I got the

question again:

“Why aren’t we

doing confession in

church anymore?”

For several years in a

row, I covered this

question with an explanation about

confession during the Easter season. I

thought everyone was pretty well

versed about this and maybe even

tired of my annual didactic on the

subject. What I forgot is that people

forget and new people come into our

community all the time! So, perhaps

it’s time again to provide some

reasoning for why we make this

change in the liturgy during the Great

50 days of Easter. It is a bit late, but

when confession returns in a couple

of weeks, you’ll know why it went

away and why it returned.

First of all, confession hasn’t

gone away. We’re just taking a

thoughtful break. One of the oldest

canons in the Christian Church

allowed for the omission of

confession during special periods of

celebration such as Easter and

Christmas. The canon’s presence did

not imply that the people of God

were, on occasion, without sin or not

in need of God’s forgiveness. The

canon simply allowed for an

occasional shift in the emphasis of

worship – from a penitential emphasis

to a celebrative one – in order to make

a point about God’s grace.

Reception to follow

Keep up with pledges this summer! Headed out on vacation this summer?

Unfortunately our expenses don’t take a

vacation, so don’t forget to pay your monthly

pledge before you leave. Also, if you visit other churches during your

travels, bring us a service bulletin. We are always interested in what other

Episcopal churches are doing! Most importantly, have a safe trip!

Search for new Director of Children’s Ministries The Cathedral is searching for our next Director of Children’s Ministries.

This person, among many other duties, has the important job of planning and

providing oversight for Sunday School and Children’s Chapel curriculums,

scheduling childcare for Church events and ministries, working with the

youth music programs and planning the yearly Vacation Bible School. If you

are interested in applying or have any questions about the position, you can

contact Dominique Shannon (316-734-2227) between now and June 16.

Join the Altar Guild — men...you too! Our Altar Guild ministers need some help. This group of people prepare for

Sunday services, handling the Eucharistic vessels and linens. Four teams

take turns covering one week per month. The commitment is for about an

hour at 8:30 a.m. on a Saturday and about 30 minutes before and after one

service. If you might be interested (either women or men), contact Bev Tilly

(232-5051) or Kent Wingerson (235-3457). They can answer any questions

and provide more information. Please prayerfully consider if this ministry

might be your service opportunity for the Cathedral.

Greeters wanted We are in need of additional ministers to serve as 10:30 greeters at the

entrance doors on Sunday mornings. No experience necessary. Just a

friendly, welcoming attitude and a willingness to show up 15 minutes before

the service. Training is provided. You will serve one Sunday a month. To

volunteer or for more information, call the church office (235-3457).

Altar Flower Ministry volunteers needed The Daughters of the King are looking for some volunteers to help with their

Altar Flower Ministry. Volunteers either help arrange the altar flowers into

small bouquets or help deliver the flowers to people who are in the hospital,

nursing home, or who are homebound. You would be scheduled for once a

month and do not need to be a DOK member to participate in this ministry.

Please contact Arceile Ridgeway at 230-4272.

Updated directories: Did you know you can get an updated directory at any time by going to our

website? On the homepage in the upper right hand corner, just below the

“Connect with us” heading, click on “parish directory.” You’ll be prompted

to put in a password and that will give you access to a constantly updated

directory. (The required password is to protect the privacy of our members.

Call the church office and we will give you the password.)

Sympathies

Long-time Cathedral member Dorothy Bodenhausen died on May 3 in

Minnesota where she had moved several years ago to be closer to her

daughter. Her service was held at the Cathedral on May 18. May her soul,

and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.

The rubrics of the 1979 Book of

Common Prayer allow us to leave

out the confession “on occasion” and

make such a shift in emphasis. There

are other times when the confession

is omitted because we use one of the

forms of the Prayers of the People

which contains a petition for “the

absolution and remission of our sins

and offenses” (Form I, petition 14;

cf. Form V, petitions 12 and 13).

Using the confession immediately

after these prayer forms is redundant

and suggests that, perhaps, God

didn’t hear us the first time we

asked!

Not every community chooses to

follow this ancient Easter (and

Christmas) custom. At the Cathedral,

we do because the rationale makes

sense, and it is one of the ways we

can make all of Easter special and

more joyous.

Both individual and corporate

confession are important for the life

of the Church and its members. Yet,

despite who and what we are –

inadequate, self-centered, unfaithful,

unloving human beings – despite all

we have to confess – there are times

when it is “good and right” to get up

from our knees and celebrate the gift

of new life that come from God’s

Son, Jesus Christ!

Alleluia, Christ is risen! So

should we rise up in thanksgiving,

joy and celebration of this grace!

—I’ll see you in church,

From the Dean

People have gathered in restaurants, bars, and other

public spaces for centuries, discussing all sorts of Big

Questions: politics, religion, philosophy, sports – just to

name a few. As people of faith, let’s take these

conversations out of the church and into the community.

They (Deacon Anne and Mother Casey) invite you to

join them for not-your-typical-church gathering.

Beverages and Big Questions (BBQ) will meet twice a

month at Norsemen Brewing Company (in NOTO) from 6

-7:30 p.m. Order a beverage of choice, some BBQ if you

wish, and pull up a chair to explore some big questions about faith and life.

Bring your questions, your curiosity, your doubts, your experience. This isn’t a time for teaching, but it is a time for

an energetic exchange of ideas. In this laid-back atmosphere, who knows where the conversation might go?!

Dates and proposed topics:

June 8 Is Love Really All We Need?

June 22 What is the Give and Take of Forgiveness

July 6 How to Play Nicely with Others in this Polarized Society?

July 20 What Constitutes the “Good Life”?

August 3 Where is God When Life Sucks?

August 17 Do You Actually Believe That (about the bible, God, church…)?

These topics are a starting point! We expect the Holy Spirit to move among us, and the group will have the chance to

help shape the proposed list of topics for our six weeks together. If you’d like to join us, join the Beverages and Big

Questions Event on Facebook, let the church office know, or just show up at 6 p.m. on the above dates.

Norsemen Brewing Company is located at 830 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka.

Cathedral Chorister’s 2017 Spring singing trip to Minnesota with stops at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Paul, All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Northfield (Evensong), and the morning chapel service at St Olaf College.

Jerry Becker was welcomed

as Grace Cathedral’s newest

Stephen Minister during the

worship service on May 14. Jerry

recently completed his required

hours of training, and has been

commissioned to this special

ministry of care. When given the

opportunity to express the reason

for his interest in being a Stephen

Minister, Jerry wrote, “I would

like to bring the love of Jesus and

the Holy Spirit to those who are

suffering, especially those who

feel alone.” We know Jerry to be

a gentle, listening presence and we

are pleased he has joined the

team.

If you, or someone you know,

would like to have a relationship

of trust and caring with a Stephen

Minister, please contact Gwen

McClain (506-6929) or Karel

Ramsey (232-1452).

EfM graduation On May 14, two Cathedral members,

Susan Raby and Jerry Becker, were

presented diplomas from The University

of the South School of Theology for

completion of the four-year Education

for Ministry course offered at Grace

Cathedral. Congratulations!

Give the choir a try for the summer

June 14 at Grace Cathedral

The following excerpt was taken from an article in The Living Church,

by Carrie Boren Headington, titled: “The Episcopal Church’s e-word: what is

evangelism?”:

“Our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, has been inviting us all to join

‘the Jesus Movement,’ which centers on sharing of the Gospel to our

hurting world. Bishop Curry frequently refers to himself as our ‘Chief

Evangelism Officer.’ For too long Episcopalians have lost our common

vision of mission, and evangelism has been ignored. Our rapid decline

has already shown us that if we do not share the saving news of Jesus

Christ with our communities, our churches become anemic at best and

often dead.”

The Bishop Kemper School for Ministry is thrilled to launch a new

program this fall to equip our faith community for the work of evangelism in

your particular context: Certificate in Lay Evangelism. This new certificate

program consists of eight courses during the 2017-18 academic year. This

coursework will prepare people for licensure as a Lay Evangelist. Half of these

courses will meet face-to-face in a traditional weekend format in Topeka,

while half will be offered in a one-day format at Trinity, Lawrence. Classes

include:

Christian Spirituality (August 2017)

Contemporary Society, MEETS SATURDAY ONLY (September 2017)

Church Communications, MEETS SATURDAY ONLY (October 2017)

Contemporary Mission (November 2017)

Social Ministry, MEETS SATURDAY ONLY (February 2018)

Conversational Evangelism, MEETS SATURDAY ONLY (March 2018)

Christian History (April 2018)

Anglican Identity (May 2018)

Those who plan to enroll in this certificate program are encouraged to sign

up for New Student Orientation, taking place July 9-10 in Topeka so you can

learn more about academic and community expectation at BKSM.

If you are not interested in earning the full certificate, you are welcome to

enroll in any of the classes that are of particular interest to you, whether you

take classes for credit or as an auditor. Lay scholarships are available.

If you have questions about the Lay Evangelism Certificate or any other

BKSM program, please visit www.bishopkemperschool.org.

About the window…

Each month, we feature a small portion of a Cathedral stained glass window on

the front cover of The Chimes. In the north balcony are four tall, narrow windows

which survived the 1975 fire, portraying symbols of the sacraments of Holy

Communion and Holy Unction. This dove represents the Holy Spirit.
