Collect of the DayAlmighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Isaiah 61:10-62:3I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteous-ness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Psalm 147:13-21, Pause at each half verse.

Worship the Lord, | O Jer|usalem; * -| praise your | God, O | Zion; For he has strengthened the | bars of your | gates; * he has | blessed your | children with|in you.He has established peace | on your | borders; * he satisfies you | with the | finest | wheat. He sends out his com|mand to the | earth, * and his | word runs | very swiftly. He gives | snow like | wool; * he | scatters | hoarfrost like | ashes. He scatters his | hail like | bread crumbs; * who can | stand a|gainst his | cold?He sends forth his | word and | melts them; * he blows with his | wind, and the | waters | flow.He declares his | word to | Jacob, * his | statutes and his | judgments to | Israel. He has not done so to | any other | nation; * to them he has not revealed his | judgments. | Halle|lujah!

Galatians 3:23-25;4:4-7Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

John 1:1-18In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the dark-ness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’”) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

Service NotesPage numbers in the right column refer to the red book, Book of Common Prayer. Hymn numbers refer to the blue book, The Hymnal 1982. “S” numbers (e.g. S120) are located in the front of the hymnal. About Anglican ChantThe singing of Anglican chant is a rich part of our heritage. • You will see a note, which is a reciting tone (a repeated musical

pitch), followed by either three chords or five chords. • If there are two dots above a single syllable, the syllable is sung

to two chords.• If there is a bracket above two syllables, those two syllables are

sung to one chord. • A vertical line, |, indicates when to move to the next measure.

Offertory Anthem: “A Child my Choice” Richard Wayne DirksenLet folly praise that fancy love, I praise and love that ChildWhose heart no thought, whose tongue no word, whose hand do deed defiled.I praise him most, I love him best, all praise and love is his; While him I love, in him I live, and cannot live amiss.Love’s sweetest mark, laud’s highest theme, man’s most desired light,To love him life, to leave him death, to live in him delight. He mine by gift, I his by debt, thus each to other due,First friend he was, best friend he is, and times will try him true.Though young, yet wise, though small, yet strong; though man, yet God he is;As wise he knows, as strong he can, as God he loves to bliss. His knowledge rules, his strength defends, his love doth cherish all;His birth our joy, his life our light, his death our end of thrall.Alas! he weeps, he sighs, he pants, yet do the angels sing;Out of his tears, his sighs and throbs, doth bud a joyful spring.Almighty Babe, whose tender arms can force all foes to fly,Correct my faults, protect my life, direct me when I die. High schoolers who have been confirmed can attend Adult Formation; others are warmly in-vited to join us!On Wednesday evenings from 6:45-8:30 p.m., the Trinity Teens Youth Group (students 6th through 12th grades) are invited to join us in the Youth Room for dinner, fellowship, learning and service.

AdultsSunday mornings: Adults gather each Sunday in the Com-mon Room at 9:15 a.m. Classes have largely been geared to-ward helping us to see God at work in some of the numerous ways that we experience human life. Presenters have helped us to experience the divine through scripture and discussion.

Christ-like Living (Rule of Benedict): If you are inter-ested in a way of life that has been found to be both holy and helpful, whatever the social changes of the era, whatever the pitfalls of the time, you might want to consider joining the fourth Wednesday evening study group on The Rule of Bene-dict. This document written over 1,500 years ago has become increasingly more important as we fumble and stumble our way toward fullness of life in a world whose foundations are shaking. In you would be interested in such a study group con-tact Jerry Grabher at [email protected] or 816-590-6205.

Centering Prayer & Resting in God: Centering Prayer moves us toward the deepest level of relationship and inti-macy with God. If you are interested in deepening your rela-tionship with God, we invite you to join us during this Lenten Season as we look at what it means to “go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who sees in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6). We will meet six Mondays, beginning February 11. If you are interested in knowing more about this Lenten study con-tact Jerry Grabher at [email protected] or 816-590-6205.

The Way: Persons new to the Cathedral, those desiring bap-tism, and those who would like to grow in their journey of faith are welcome to join in The Way, Wednesdays, February 6 through March 20, 6-8 p.m. in Founders’ Hall. The Way is for those who would like to understand what it means to follow Christ as part of the Cathedral congregation and as Christians in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition. Each evening includes a simple meal and table conversation. This is followed by teach-ing and/or presentations, and group discussion. Links are made between daily life and work and the worship and prac-tice of the church. Emphasis is given to understanding what it means to live into one’s baptismal promises. The evening con-cludes with quiet reflection and prayer. Persons participating in The Way will be prepared for baptism or affirmation of faith at the Great Vigil of Easter, March 30. Questions? Contact the Dean’s office: [email protected].

Men’s Bible Study: Men’s Bible Study is a congenial group of men with enormous curiosity who have a deep interest in the sacred and in searching for meaning therein while enjoy-ing the fellowship of other Cathedral members and friends in a spirit of camaraderie and humor as well as study. We meet Tuesday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. We meet for about an hour and usually read aloud a passage from the Bible and then have a spirited discussion of what we have read.

Women’s Bible Study: The Women’s Bible Study group meets Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 (or thereabouts) to insightfully, joyfully, compassionately and often passionate-ly study the Old Testament and Gospel reading for the follow-ing Sunday.

Women’s Retreat: The annual retreat for the women of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral will be February 8-10, 2013 at the Marillac Center of the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth, Kansas. Our theme this year is “What is Love? A story of devo-tion and service,” based on the book The Story of Ruth: Twelve Moments in Every Woman’s Life by Joan D. Chittister. Wheth-er you have enjoyed many previous retreats or will be signing up for the first time, save the date and make time to join us for this experience of reflection, fun, worship and renewal. Register online: www.ghtc-kc.org/we-learn/womens-retreat.

Education for Ministry: Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of study, prayer and reflection which is coordinated by the School of Theology at the University of the South. It is designed for laypersons who want to gain a better under-standing of scripture, theology and themselves. The groups meet once each week during the school year with the guid-ance of trained mentors. Meetings include worship, fellow-ship, study, discussion and theological reflection. If you are interested, contact Steve Johnson ([email protected]).
