The 15th Annual Mother Teresa Maternity Home Dinner and Auction held on Saturday, February 3 was another sellout festive evening for the 240 guests in attendance. The “Evening of Elegance” transformed Gurnell Hall into a beautiful Winter Wonderland themed dining room filled with guests wearing their best and snazziest attire.
Once inside the dining room, guests had an opportunity to hear the live “soft Jazz” music from the Black Tuesday Jazz Band as they enjoyed passed appetizers with their choice of drink, viewed and bid on over 70 silent auction items, and purchased a wine cork in the Barrel of Wine game for a chance to win a 30 bottle package of fine wines. A scrumptious dinner was prepared by Master Chef Mike Inks of the Foothill Grill and served by the ROP students from El Dorado area high schools.
Auctioneer Jack Sweeney was assisted by our emcee Jim Yates. Together they conducted an exciting live auction with 13 items including a 7-night cruise for two on Holland America to their choice of the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska or Canada/New England; a getaway to Carmel/Monterey; a 3-night stay at a beautiful Tahoe Donner cabin; Oakland Raiders tickets; various packages of fine wine; jewelry courtesy of Randolph’s Jewelers; and tickets to see the San Francisco Giants battle their way back to the World Series.
Our “Fund-A-Need” gave everyone an opportunity to participate in the funding of the much needed Education Fund. This fund will be used to assist our residents who have had their education disrupted by moves, abuse and poverty. The fund will be used to pay for high school and community college courses, testing fees, driver training and licensing fees, uniforms and equipment as needed. One of our goals is to have them leave the Mother Teresa Maternity Home as a more educated woman with the skills to be a productive member of our community.
Through the generosity of the sponsors, donors and guests, the event will help support the Mother Teresa Maternity Home for the coming year. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event on February 2, 2019.

An Evening of Elegance …
A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!”
The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.

Our 12 relief staff play an integral part in the success of our program. Along with our home director Jessica Gonzalez, these wonderful women keep the home running 24/7 and are positive role models for our residents. On a daily basis, they maintain a safe environment for all, mentor the women, assist with any problems, provide
transportation, dispense medications and so much more. They all do this with humor, love and compassion.
One of our staff members has worked at the home for 17 years! This is not just a job for these women, but a true ministry of joy and caring. We are all thankful for their expertise and commitment.

The last few months have been extremely busy at Mother Teresa Maternity Home. Currently we have four residents and three newborn baby girls. A little boy is due at the end of the month.
Christmas was a time of joy and gratitude for all in the home. A gorgeous Christmas tree was donated by Board member Barbara Goyette and her husband Larry, which our residents enjoyed decorating for Christmas.
Holy Trinity and St. Peter and Paul “adopted” the home and delivered carloads of gifts for the residents, infants and the home. All were thrilled with the generosity of these parishes, as well as many individuals who shopped, wrapped and surprised our residents
with gifts. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support.
We are blessed to have several new volunteers. One couple is graciously reorganizing and cleaning our packed garage. Another is starting the spring vegetable garden, along with our residents.
The youth group of St. Patrick Church invited our residents and their infants to a home cooked dinner. Jeanine Delgado, the youth director, organized this event which was enjoyed by all and greatly appreciated.
Ongoing visits to doctors, dentists, mental health, parenting classes, childbirth classes, NA/AA meetings, Early Childhood Head Start, The Center for Violence Free Relationships, the library, Public
Health, Parent Infant Program and more, keep our residents and our director hopping. We still have a need for volunteer drivers. Please call the home if you are interested.
