The original site, of what is

known today as Goddard United

Methodist Church, had a Gothic

Revival wood-framed structure,

constructed in 1908. The 39

charter members who established

Dodson Avenue Methodist

Episcopal Church South on July

24, 1907, began with just a vacant

lot with trees and grapevines.

Many new homes at that time were

being built on the south side of

Fort Smith, but on the two lots

purchased they took advantage of

the warm weather and shade from

a brush arbor they constructed.

As fall approached that year, they

enclosed the arbor, creating a shed

for the congregation of 44,

covering the cracks with strips on

the outside, and covering the

inside with building paper, and

carpeting the ground with

sawdust...ready for winter! By the

next summer, with 95 members

gathering, they took great care to

build a white frame building for

their religious facility, reflecting

some of the Late Gothic Revival

architectural style.

The first church services at

1922 Dodson Avenue met at the

corner of the lot under an early

American style grape arbor built

from wood—a primitive but

utilitarian structure. The first

official church building in which

the Dodson Avenue Methodist

Episcopal Church South met was

constructed that next year, with

units being built in 1922 and in

1925.

The grape arbor as it may have appeared in

1907. Drawing by Betty Campbell.

September is “Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month”

Health Ministry Information Submitted by Frankie Allred

Most people know that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but

most of us still aren’t getting enough.

Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits

can help you:

Lower your risk for heart disease and some types of

cancer

Maintain or reach a healthy weight

Keep your body strong and active

Healthy eating patterns include a variety of fruits and vegetables and include all fresh,

frozen, canned, juice and dried options. Make sure you get options from all subgroups:

dark green, red, orange, starchy, and legumes (beans and peas.)

The recommended amount of fruits and vegetables in the Healthy U.S.-Style Eating

Pattern at the 2,000-calorie level is 2½ cup-equivalents of vegetables and 2 cup-

equivalents of fruit per day. One cup of 100% fruit juice counts as 1 cup of fruit.

Although fruit juice can be part of healthy eating patterns, it is lower than whole fruit in

dietary fiber and when consumed in excess can contribute extra calories. Therefore, at

least half of the recommended amount of fruits should come from whole fruits. When

juices are consumed, they should be 100% juice without added sugars.

Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your

day:

Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.

Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they’re ready for quick, healthy snacks.

Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week.

Remember, eating more fruits and veggies can be fun – and it’s worth it!

For more information visit https://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015/resources/2015-

2020_Dietary_Guidelines.pdf or ask one of the parish nurses in our church for a copy of

the guidelines.

GRIEFSHARE

Our third semester of GriefShare began with an

orientation on August 22nd. It was a great way to

register, meet each other and get the anxiety and

nerves lessened and learn more about what

GriefShare is all about. Sharing our grief and

pain is an important step, but not that easy for

most of us. Please pray for this ministry and the

participants that are brave enough to come. We

will meet every Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm in

Young Hall for 13 consecutive weeks. The

meeting consists of a video, discussion of

workbook that coincides with the weekly video,

share time and prayer. Anyone can join the

semester at any time. If you need to bring a loved

one or friend for support, that is totally

acceptable. We hurt because we love.

Share a Smile,

Cindy Peevy

GriefShare Leader

Stock The Shelves

Five Fort Smith schools benefitted from the

2017 Stock the Shelves Inside/Out Project.

supplies were shared with the following

Tilles, Ballman and Sutton. Please thank our

Missions Ministry for providing supplies to

these schools.

Please plan now to attend the Northwest District UMW

Annual Meeting on October 14 at First United Methodist

Church in Fort Smith. Woohoo … out of town travel not

required to attend this meeting! Please let Elizabeth

Eubanks know if you plan to attend so we can reserve

you a spot.

Our next Goddard UMW Meeting is scheduled for Sept.

12 at 1 PM in the Parlor. Hope you can attend! Our

speaker will be Abby Cox with Steps Family Resource Center in Fort Smith.

On August 5, Jenny Sorey of HUB of HOPE, led a very informative session at Goddard to help us bet-

ter understand how we can help victims of human trafficking and how we can best help protect our

children and grandchildren. HUB of HOPE asks us take these actions: Pray, get educated and edu-

cate others, to keep our eyes open and report problems, and to use our resources to help agencies

who are working to stop human trafficking. She also asked that we enter the National Human

Trafficking Hotline Phone Number 1-888-373-888 to our phone contact list so we will have the

number readily available if we see the need to get help to someone.

We also heard from PACT, Parents Are Committed

To:

(1) encourage, enable and support each other to educate their children about trafficking;

(2) talk to their children about the tactics of child predators; (3) teach their children about appropri-

ate boundaries in human relationships; (4) invest in their children, their activities and their friends;

(5) invite their children to join forces against the trafficking of children; and (6) show their children

the difference between real love and empty love.

“If I see the mass, I won’t act. If I see the one, I will.”

News From our Goddard Pantry

What does it take to keep the pantry shelves full?

First, it takes many of us to donate to our pantry. Then it

takes someone to place our orders each week. Then it

takes a hard working person like Don Holland to take his

trailer and go to the Food Bank to pickup groceries, bring

the groceries to the church, and then unload the groceries.

Other volunteers, David Childress, Donny Dixon, Ron

Garner and Jim Rose help unload the groceries. Don then

goes to Shoppers Value Store and picks up groceries there,

brings the groceries back to the church, and unloads these

groceries.

The groceries have to be “unboxed” and stacked on our

shelves. David Childress, Donnie Anderson, and Elizabeth

Eubanks help with this. Then the groceries have to be put

in the pantry sacks. Nancy Robertson and Suzie Dunn

have faithfully served each week to sack groceries for our

volunteers to have to distribute on Wednesday morning.

Others who have helped us faithfully with the pickup, deliv-

ery, stocking and sacking are Richard & Polly Taylor, Mike

Lyons, Bruce Dalke, and Mike Mankin. The “magic” of get-

ting our Pantry stocked happens on Monday and Tuesday.

If you would like to help, just let Elizabeth Eubanks know.
