LEADER BIBLE STUDY The most basic question for science and philosophy is, “How did the universe begin?”
In the 20th century, secular astronomers came to the undisputed conclusion that the
entire universe (time, space, matter, and energy) had a beginning from nothing. But
they cannot, in any way, explain how.
Genesis 1:1 gives the only reasonable answer to the “how” question—God
created everything. God revealed that the universe exists because He brought it into
existence from nothing. The Hebrew word translated “created” is bara, which means
“specially created” (it is also used twice for mankind’s creation in verse 27).
Beyond that initial creation event, Genesis 1–2 outlines the six-day progression
God followed to create the earth. We will look at the first four days in this session.
Initially the earth was dark and formless over the waters. So the Spirit of God created
light, which established days and nights. On day two, He formed the sky. On day
three, dry land emerged. He called the land earth and the waters seas. God made
plants and trees and declared them good. On day four, God opened the skies to
reveal the sun, moon, and stars to light the earth. The sun was to have dominion over
the day, and the moon governed the night. The stars also shone brightly, and God
saw it was good.
Why can’t science tell us how the universe was made?
________________________________________________________________
Why is it necessary for God to reveal how the universe was made?

How was God’s declaration that His creation is good reflective of His holy nature?

GROUP TIME ►Move to music. Play “God Made a Beautiful World” (track 2). Guide preschoolers to
form a circle (earth) and spin slowly left and right as a group.
►Tell the Bible story. Choose a child to open your Bible to the Book of Genesis. Tell
the children that Genesis is the first book in the Bible. Display the time line. Point to
each number on the time line as you tell the Bible story. Emphasize that God created
the world in six days. Comment that today you will learn about the first four days.
GOD MADE THE WORLD—Based on Genesis 1:1-19
In the beginning God made the world. The world was first dark and empty. God
said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He called the light day and the
dark night. He made the first morning, the first evening, and the first day.
On the second day, God separated the water. The area between the water
was called sky. The night came and then a new morning.
On the third day, God spoke and created dry land. He called the dry land
earth and the gathering of the water seas. He then created all kinds of trees
and plants. He made trees that grow fruit and plants that grow seed. He saw it
was good. The night came and a new day.
On the fourth day, God said, “Let there be lights in the sky.” He made the
moon and stars to give light at night. He made a brighter light, the sun, to
give light for the day. God looked at everything He created and saw it was good.
►Review the Bible story and learn the Bible Verses. Choose a child to attach the
corresponding time line pictures to day 1. Continue with the time line through day
4, reviewing what God made each day. Display the Unit and Weekly Verse Markers.
Mention that today both Bible Verses are the same. Lead the preschoolers to say the
Bible Verse while giving a thumbs-up sign after each picture is attached to the time
line. Mention that Jesus taught the people that God cares about His creation.
►Play a game and pray. Point to the yellow and black papers on the walls. Explain
that the preschoolers need to decide if what you say is seen or done during the night
or day. Practice with the word sleep. Direct the children to move to the black paper
because we usually sleep at night. Continue the game with these words: play at park,
stars, owl sleeps, moon, sun, go to church, ride your bike. Lead the children in prayer by
saying, “I am thankful for (something God made).”
►Wrap it up. Talk about the children’s favorite nature items. Sing “God Made You and
Me” (track 1). Option: Show the video “God Made the World: Life Action.”

BIBLE-LEARNING ACTIVITIES
DRAW SUNSETS (Art)
• Help each child complete the Kids Activity Page.
• Lead preschoolers to draw sunsets on their papers.
• Explain that a sunset happens at the end of the day when the sun is lowering and
night is coming. State that God made the sun so we would have light during the day.
• Help the children gently tap the damp sponge on the drawings to blend the colors
into each other. Lead children to pray, thanking God for the sun.
• Adapt for Babies–2s: Read aloud Daytime, Nighttime. Look at sunset pictures.
PLAY A GAME (Games)
Place the game cards in a bag or basket. Lay the bag and gameboard on the floor or table.

used His words: He said the word light and there was light.
• Adapt for Babies–2s: Look at the National Parks pictures. Use interlocking blocks.
MOLD WITH PLAY DOUGH (Art)
Assemble the Food Wheel.
• Lead preschoolers to roll out the play dough and cut out star and circle shapes.

items. Mention that the food items come from
plants that God created.
D. Finish the patterns. Provide several small
squares of construction paper in four different
colors. Start a pattern with the colors and
challenge the child to continue the pattern.
Suggest a child make his own pattern. Talk
about things God made in those colors.
Adapt for Babies–2s: Laminate four colors of
construction paper squares. Display and point
to each color, encouraging older babies to say
the color. Name things that God made that are
those colors.
CLEAN UPSay: ”Let’s work together to get the room cleaned.”
Guide children to clean the room.
PRETEND TO PLAYGather the children in a circle. Start with tossing a
pretend ball to each other. Continue pretending
to have fun doing these actions or some of your
own: jumping rope, hiking, canoeing, picking
blueberries, lying down and looking at the stars.
Mention that we can do all kinds of fun things in the
world that God made.
Adapt for Babies–1s: Read books together.
DISMISSHelp children gather art projects or personal
belongings. Remind parents to review the Bible

Missions in West Africa
Missionary: Kimberly Cain
Jesus loves all children everywhere and wants them
to learn about Him. Kimberly Cain in West Africa loves
children and tells them about Jesus.
Sometimes Kimberly teaches children as they sit on mats
on the dusty ground. Sometimes she teaches children
at a local church where the roof is made of woven grass.
That church building might not look like yours, but the
children in West Africa are learning the same stories from
the Bible that you are!
Kimberly uses a storytelling cloth to tell stories from the
Bible. Each picture on the cloth is about a different Bible
story. Kimberly tells children the Bible stories so they can
grow up knowing Jesus and telling others about Him.
Pray
• For missionaries to learn the new language
• For missionaries to adjust to a new culture and year-
round hot temperatures
• For the children of West Africa to learn to follow Jesus
and tell others
