Jenni: It s tricky trying to define one s music with the narrowness of one single genre. Gloria Morti is definitely not black metal, though there are influences from that genre as well. Biggest influence these days I think comes from death metal, but our music is such a mixture of elements… I also think it limits a band s creativity if it decides to put itself in one preset of manners and musical elements of a single genre (or even sub genre of a sub genre etc). We ve been describing our music as extreme metal, in a way it fits us best, as it isn t as definitive “small box”. Jenni: Those songs represent the time when this band was still very young and we ve evolved musically out of that style, so I m afraid they won t be featured on any future releases. HB-Panama Hateweaver: Hello, how are you Jenni?, I am very pleased knowing that Gloria Morti has returned with some changes and working on a new album, say to me how it has been during this time to handle with the other members of the band, with a crazy guy called Psycho … as singer and specially for be the only girl in the band, Do you think that sexism is a thing of the past at this point?

Jenni: Hello there, I’m doing great! The band is in the process of making and rehearsing the new material, and hopefully next year you will get to hear a brand new, ruthlessly brutal album from us! Sometimes it does feel like quite a freak circus with this bunch, and yeah I get to hear some quite sexist remarks on every rehearsal, hehe… but we’re all good friends and picking on each other in the most incorrect ways is something that this gang does to keep the spirit up. We get along great, no problem there. Seriously speaking, though female musicians in the metal scene are quite a minority, no doubt the same respect is given to them.

Hateweaver: The music of Gloria Morti it’s a thing that goes beyond the description, I hate the simple comparison of some sites online that has labeled

Hateweaver: “Ophidian Thorngarden” and the name of album “Eryx“, it keeps a tight relation between them with snakes, some affi nity for the snakes Jenni or its just simply coincidence?

Jenni: The lyrics were written by Jarmo, our old drummer, so there isn’t all that much that I can comment, but there’s a lot of symbolism in snakes which are in contact with the themes that we have wanted to bring forward in our music.

Räihä: Snakes are cool and extremely metal!...

Hateweaver: A question for Räihä (Guitar), in your website do you mention in the credits of the album Eryx some Destructhor, if he is the person that I believe that it must be, is the same Zyklon guitar

GM as black metallers, but in other words as you would like to describe your music seeing all this meditative chaos of the underground industry and diversity of musical subgenres in Finland, how you describe on your own terms your music?

Jenni: It’s tricky trying to defi ne one’s music with the narrowness of one single genre. Gloria Morti is defi nitely not black metal, though there are infl uences from that genre as well. Biggest infl uence these days I think comes from death metal, but our music is such a mixture of elements… I also think it limits a band’s creativity if it decides to put itself in one preset of manners and musical elements of a single genre (or even sub genre of a sub genre etc). We’ve been describing our music as extreme metal, in a way it fi ts us best, as it isn’t as defi nitive “small box”. The best way to fi nd out of course is to listen to our music and decide for yourself.

Räihä: Every one of us listens to different styles of music. From ambient toAnaal Nathrakh. We try to bring that diversity into our music. And I don’t mean that we try to jump from one genre to another. Every one of us just brings their own spice to a soup called extreme metal.

loria Morti is a relatively a young outfi t hailing from Heinola, Finland, they play a type of uncanny mixture of melodic but really extreme metal adorned with some keyboards, a deep breath of fresh air on this polluted underground globe where the media and artist are going on the trend-wagon day by day.

Eversince the band started making live-appearances in 2001 they’ve performed on numerous venues across the southern parts of Finland and have shared the stage with such bands as Zyklon, Mayhem, Before the Dawn, The Crown and Dissection. Juho Räihä (Guitar) is also well-known for his beside project Before The Dawn... another fi nest fi nnish metal band!

We’ve got in touch with Jenni Kemppaine (Keys), since the miracle of Facebook was created. She’s a very down to earth girl and cool metalhead, The one who had the replied us, this way and exclusive we offer them this interesting interview with Raiha and Jenni of Gloria Morti !...

player? If it is like that … we would like knowing how it was your experience having been worked with him at the production of the song: “Sands Of Hinnom”?

Räihä: He most defi nitely is the guitar player of Zyklon and Morbid Angel. We have known him for some years now, back from a small tour we played with Zyklon. He is a cool guy and we love his style of playing. Sands of Hinnom had a part that instantly said to me that this calls for a Destructhor type solo. We contacted him and he was excited and willing to write and play a solo. He recorded the part in a Norwegian studio and sent the fi les to me. Everything went really smoothly. He is a hard boiled professional after all.

Hateweaver: Jenni and Räihä, what do we would expect from the new GM album?, is Räihä again involved in the production of the new CD? Is there any tentative title for this new album? (ie production, tracks, sound engineering, etc)

Jenni: It will be yet another big step compared to our previous album and I have a strong feeling that it’ll be our best album yet. Reaching for excellence is often time consuming, but I’m sure this’ll be worth the wait.

Räihä: The next album will be made in the same fashion as Eryx. I will record and mix the album. There is no reason for us to change our method of working because this simply is the most effi cient way of working. And we have a really clear vision what we should sound like. I wouldn’t be comfortable with someone outside the band having such a huge infl uence to our sound.

Hateweaver: Switching to a new record label deal? Or some important record label showing interest in the new production? or simply will work with their current indie label: Stay Heavy / Cyclone Empire?, Can you give us any advance?

Räihä: Sorry but my lips are sealed.

Hateweaver: Jenni, I have read a review done by an user of the website: www.metal-archives.com (February 17th, 2009) About the poor sound in the

keyboards lines, and the truth that the GM sound is pretty harsh in your style and in accordance with the arrangements of the band do I certainly believe that the keyboards come just in the precise moment, the opposite happens with Children Of Bodom in which they played keys from beginning to the end and fi t well their style, what do you think about this comment?

Jenni: In melodic metal keyboards get a lot of space, but this is ass-kicking ear-bleeding fast brutal shit we’re playing and doing keyboards to music like this is a whole other issue. Overdoing the keyboards doesn’t serve the music, it takes the edge off. I want to keep the keys in the background, bringing depth and dynamics to the music but not mellowing the riffs down. On the next album the keyboards will go to an even more “ugly” direction, a lot of distortion and mean sounds to be expected… Harsh, yes, and so it’s supposed to be!

Hateweaver: Things just happened since decided the drummer Jarmo leave the band, How it is the relationship with him at this point, still being good friends?

Jenni: It was Jarmo’s personal decision to quit drumming and there was no problem with that. We were sad to lose him, but as he wasn’t prepared to give 100% to the band anymore it was the only choice. We’re still very good friends and wish him the best of luck. After Jarmo left we were also worried about where we would fi nd a suitable replacement, as good drummers that can play our kind of music aren’t that many. We were very lucky to fi nd Kauko Kuusisalo shortly after Jarmo had announced his quitting, and in a matter of weeks the band was back on track with Kauko as our new blasting force.

Hateweaver: As I had commented to you previously I saw Kauko caught on video rehearsing, what I believe it is a new song, it is simply crushing! What do you can tell us about Kauko?

Jenni: Actually the song he plays on the video on the website is Portal by Origin. Crushing indeed, and all I can say we’ll be pushing Kauko’s limits with the new album as well. He’s a talented drummer, fast as hell and his arrival has defi nitely pushed the whole band to a new level. We’re proud to have him with us.

Hateweaver: Does Kauko come from another previous project or is it his fi rst experience with a band?

Jenni: He has three other bands: Ydin, Fatal Sound Project and an unnamed band. We were a bit worried in the beginning how it would be possible to fi t our schedules together, as he also lives in Oulu, hundreds of kilometers north of Jyväskylä where the rest of the band is living/rehearsing. But everything has gone really smoothly, he’s very dedicated and it’s all working out just great.

Hateweaver: I just imagined a Tour with GM as headliners and it would be a wild thing!, but another night I dreamed that Gloria Morti was going at Tuska Open Air and on the roster along with acts like Kataklysm (Can.) and Zyklon (Nor) altogether on just one fuckin stage… I just said to myself that likewise this one: this is the end of the world as it was not known by us!, [laughs]…

Jenni: That would indeed be a great way to end the world. [laughs]…

Hateweaver: There is the slight possibility for embarks GM on a U.S. tour or any bill for Latin American countries? Jenni: It would be absolutely great to do a tour there of course, but right now I don’t see it being realistic for us. Touring is expensive, especially when far away on other continents, so right now we are more concerned about getting our album released and we’ll see what the future brings… But never say never!

Hateweaver: Can you add some fi nal comments for your followers here in Panama and for the visitors of Head Bangers Panama online?

Jenni: Thanks for your support, keep checking our website and MySpace for news, ‘cause we’re working hard to get this apocalypse of an album out for you guys to headbang to!

Räihä: Rock the METAL!

Hateweaver: Au revoir... Perkele!, Thanks Räihä and Jenni!

Jenni: Cheers to you!
