The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

LATEST TRENDS

In Russia demand is very high on the Moscow wholesale market for what is an increasingly limited supply of Alaska pollack. On the Russian Far East market, Alaska pollack prices are increasing due to adverse weather conditions.

The Alaska pollack B season in the Bering Sea and Alieutan Islands opened on 12 June with an increased total allowable catch.

According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, exports of cod, saithe, haddock and other groundfish reached record highs in May, totaling NOK 1.03 billion. This is a 27% increase in value compared with May last year. The record-breaking exports in May were mainly dried cod and fresh fish exports. Although Portugal, Norway’s main cod market, has purchased less cod so far this year compared with previous years, May accounted for more than 30% of all Norwegian cod exports. Very good prices were achieved for clipfish, salted fish and fresh fish. Meanwhile, veterinary issues related to frozen fish exports to China continue to create concern.

FLATFISH

This year consumption on the European market of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) is anticipated to be low because of high prices. Wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroe Islands and Icelandic origin is not abundant as both countries have been focusing on catches for other species such as small pelagics. Stockfish supply from the Lofoten Islands is quite low, and consequently prices are increasing. Our correspondent in Spain reports that Merluccius productus prices for the new season have changed very little compared with last year and that Merluccius capensis prices for mince blocks remain stable on the European market. Hake catches in Namibia are reported to be better than usual in the winter time with the average size also larger than normal. Prices are decreasing. Saithe prices are reported to be higher compared with last month as no stocks are available.

In May, turbot demand remained at the relatively high level reached after Easter. Good demand and limited supply have led to the present price increase on the European market and, should demand remain strong, a further price increase may be observed in the near future.

TUNA - BILLFISHES Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific is moderate and, following the World Tuna Purse Seine Organization’s decision to reduce fishing effort by 35% from 15 May to 31 December, a decrease in transhipment activities has been reported. Raw material inventories at Thai canneries have fallen to moderate levels because of higher production activities. Consequently, the skipjack price in Bangkok has increased to USD 1 150/tonne. Catches in the Eastern Pacific have fallen while local canneries continue to report moderate-to-high inventory levels. Factory activities are reported to be improving. Both skipjack and yellowfin prices have increased to USD 900/tonne and USD 1 500/tonne ex vessel Manta respectively. No changes have been reported in the Atlantic Ocean as fishing continues to be moderate and inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Both skipjack and yellowfin price remain stable at EUR 950/tonne and EUR 1 650/tonne ex vessel Abidjan respectively. Similarly to the Atlantic Ocean, no changes are reported for the Indian Ocean. Fishing remains poor, with mainly skipjack being landed. Local canneries continue to be sufficiently stocked. Prices of both skipjack and yellowfin remain at EUR 975/tonne and EUR 1 550/tonne FOB Mahe level respectively. Reflecting the price trends in both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, European market prices for skipjack and yellowfin remain steady at EUR 1 050/tonne and EUR 1 750/tonne CFR Spain respectively. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins continues to decrease to USD 6 700/tonne DDP Italy.

SMALL PELAGICS

CEPHALOPODS

On the Russian wholesale market Pacific herring prices are reported to be stable this month. Presently the whole supply of frozen mackerel from Northern Europe is already sold but new mackerel catches are expected soon from Norway. In Spain, the new mackerel season is almost over and the last remaining stocks are being sold. The Icelandic blue whiting spring fishing season has now come to an end with a total catch of 163 881 tonnes but the major proportion of the balance is expected to be caught in autumn, according to the Holtermann Report. In Denmark, as was feared, sand eel fishing has slowed down and the official total this season came to 217 532 tonnes against the 336 964 tonne quota. Sprat fishing in the Baltic has come to its seasonal end. In Norway, fishing activity for fishmeal and oil raw material is limited at the moment. However, blue whiting catches have been reported from the Norwegian Sea after 10 years without any landings in this area, bringing the total this year to 438 192 tonnes against the 498 173 tonne quota.

In Europe, Spain and Italy are the two major markets for cephalopods. During the first quarter of this year, Spain imported 16 800 tonnes of squid (-2% on last year’s figure), 13 900 tonnes of octopus (+53%) and 7 800 tonnes of cuttlefish (+10%). Italy imported 15 800 tonnes of squid (-10%), 13 400 tonnes of octopus (+33%) and 3 700 tonnes of cuttlefish (-3%) In South Africa, the squid fishery re-opened at the beginning of June after a three-month closure period. Although the weather has been stormy, there have been fishable periods, but the catch rates have been very poor, with few eggs being seen. There is a possibility that the El Niño effects may have some responsibility. Despite the poor start in catches, there are still local stocks because buyers were waiting to see how catching started. Presently, the low catch rates have not been reflected in r prices. It is hoped that once the news of the poor catches filters to the market and, hopefully, there is a good offtake during the European August vacation period, prices may firm.

CRUSTACEANS

In Mauritania no cephalopod catches are reported as a consequence of the two-month (May and June) biological closure declared by the Ministry of Fisheries in order to prevent over-exploitation. The market for giant squid is inactive at the moment as demand from the major markets such as Spain, China and Korea is very weak and prices remain low for raw product. The market for value-added products is more active with Thai buyers showing interest in squid necks.

Crab landings (Cancer pagurus) are expected to increase as the fishing season is starting but price levels will depend largely on weather conditions. It is also anticipated that demand from cooking factories will begin to increase in order to start building stocks for the end of the year. Even as we enter the full season when prices can generally be expected to fall, there will likely be significant variation depending on how accommodating the weather is for fishermen. Lobster prices (Homarus gammarus) are decreasing presently but are also reported to be fluctuating somewhat, depending on weather conditions. The American lobster spring season started late this year because of too much ice in the harbours. Some fishing areas have made up for the delay, but in other areas, fishing has been slow. The price of raw material paid to the fishermen increased by about 0.75 CAD/lb or more, resulting in an increase of at least 10% in the selling price of whole lobster. There has been a big increase in labour costs this year, which is having a big impact on processed lobster. The US market is very strong and demand is high, partly because the market is dry but also because of a strong exchange rate. The US market pays high prices for raw tails and cooked meat, pushing prices for those products up by at least 20% compared

with last year. At the same time demand from Asia is very high this year, mainly for whole lobster. Europe, meanwhile, has had a hard time this season as prices increased another 10% in euro terms because of the weak exchange rate. Shrimp The European market for shrimp continues to be generally sluggish with importers and processors suffering from the impact of the weak euro against the US dollar and not benefitting from decreasing shrimp prices. World demand is rather weak and prices are fluctuating mainly according to Chinese demand while imports are varying. Newly released import figures for the first quarter of this year, however, show an increase in the volume of shrimp imports into three of the major EU importing countries compared with the first quarter of 2014: Spain (+17%), France (+10%) and UK (+2%). In particular, Argentine red shrimp imports by Spain increased by almost 40% compared with last year and China more than doubled the volume of its exports to this market. The first cycle of production from Central America and from other countries with a seasonal harvest has started. Future market development will largely depend on the quantities and sizes on offer during the present month. Our correspondent in Indonesia reports that raw material supply is stable but prices are decreasing as a result of reduced demand from major markets. In Argentina, pleoticus muelleri fishing grounds in national jurisdiction waters opened to the entire fleet on 6 June, after a research survey produced good results at the end of May. Catches are reported to be very good and to consist mainly of large sizes, producing significant downward pressure on prices at origin. On the European market, although stocks are very limited, buyers are presently reducing their purchases to minimum quantities – for replenishment only – waiting for a possible drop in prices. Suppliers on the opposite side are currently trying to sell this month’s small remaining stocks. As a result

prices are approximately stable for the moment or in some cases decreasing slightly, for example for size 20/30 for which stocks are no longer available.

On the French market, the season for Dutch and Irish mussels is presently declining, being replaced temporarily by Italian and Spanish products until the Bouchot season fully commences in July. On 1 June, the first “Label Rouge”1 rope mussels from Charente-Maritime entered the market. For the first season, the production of these labelled high sea rope mussels is estimated at 500 to 1000 tonnes. The Normandy wild bottom mussel season has just started, although volumes are expected to be lower this season. In Galicia, floating mussel farms continue to be hit by biotoxins (since the end of March) and more than 80% of platforms are now reported to be closed in La Coruña and Pontevedra. Large-sized oysters are relatively abundant this year because of the exceptionally warm autumn which resulted in a particularly rapid growth rate and also due to the Russian embargo (an important market for large-sized oysters), leading to a slight easing of trade prices in early 2015. For medium-size oysters (for which supply is more limited than No.1 and No.2 sizes), however, INSEE data show record-high retail prices in March and April with a price decrease in May only. Prices for the second half of 2015 will depend largely on summer growing conditions. 1 Label Rouge is an official endorsement of the superior quality of a food or farmed product

After spending the first 5 months of 2015 lingering below last year’s levels, average Atlantic salmon prices on European markets have finally risen above their 2014 equivalents over the last few weeks. At the root of this reversal has been a return to a more even spread of sizes on the market and relatively lower overall volumes as water temperatures have cooled. Additional factors pushing prices upwards were the weakening of the krone

versus the euro and the temporary increase in demand from the US following the Chilean customs strike in late May. For the full month of May, Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) figures put total Norwegian salmon exports at 84 740 tonnes, 4% higher than last year. The average export price for the same month was NOK 38.5/kg, 5% lower than last year. The year-to-date total for the first five months of 2015, according to the NSC, came to 408 000 tonnes worth NOK 18.1 billion – a marginal increase in value and a 7% increase in volume. The EU continues to absorb the large majority of Norwegian salmon, although the average price for the full month of May was still below May 2014. In the UK, a drop in exports to China and the US has pushed total volumes significantly down with prices down also. With the Chilean salmon sector now exposed to an increasing array of risks such as further customs strikes and a growing aversion amongst major US retailers to the relatively higher use of antibiotics at Chilean farms, European suppliers may be presented with additional opportunities in the US in the future. However, on the negative side, the forecasted El Niño in Peru this year is likely to affect the supply of anchoveta, thus pushing up feed costs at farms. The overall forward price consensus at FishPool for the second half of 2015 has increased in NOK terms.

The Norwegian Seafood Council puts the total value of Norwegian trout exports in May at NOK 157 million, 22% lower than May 2015 while total export volume was down 15% to 3 760 tonnes. The average NOK/kg price was around 5.8% lower than May 2015, which is the smallest gap between 2015 and 2014 prices since January. A more than doubling in the quantity of trout exported to Belarus has made up to some extent for the continuing absence of the Russian market. Meanwhile, in Italy, supply is low and trout prices remain stable at last month’s high levels. A further increase in prices is expected for September.

SEABASS – SEABREAM - MEAGRE

Tilapia prices have reached bottom-low levels because of weak demand, although prices are expected to increase again in July. Pangasius demand from the European has weakened despite the price level which has remained relatively moderate. An increase in Nile perch catches is reported as well as a devaluation of the local currency. However, the market in Europe is almost nil and imported quantities have been reduced considerably. In Hungary, carp prices are increasing slowly while demand is decreasing.

The full effects of reduced supply in the bass and bream sector are beginning to be felt in the market as prices for both species turned sharply upwards over the last month. Reports from both major suppliers, Greece and Turkey, and from buyers in the major market Italy, all point to the same upward trend. Indeed, prices for Greek origin 300-450 g/pc bream in Italy are the highest they have been for over six years at EUR 5.70, while prices for Greek bass of the same size category are the highest since 2012. According to Undercurrent News, the Turkish industry is also experiencing price peaks at record levels. Industry analysts Kontali estimate the overall drop in supply in 2015 to be between 7 and 9%, which suggests there is still room for further prices increases over the summer before the seasonal drop in demand prompts a reversal of this trend on European markets. This should in particular provide a welcome boost for Greek farming companies still undergoing restructuring and possibly facing further consolidation.
