Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicinewas established in 1979 and matriculated its first classin 1981. Located in North Miami Beach, the school be-came a component of the newly formed SoutheasternUniversity of the Health Sciences in 1988 due to theaddition of new health professions degree programssuch as pharmacy and optometry. In 1994, Southeast-ern University merged with Nova University, thus cre-ating the name Nova Southeastern University.

Since relocating to NSU’s main Davie/Fort Laud-erdale campus in 1996, the College of OsteopathicMedicine has grown into an even stronger medical ed-ucation entity that wholeheartedly tackled the secondmajor charge of medical schools, which is to producenew knowledge through research and scholarly activ-ity. NSU-COM is now ranked first or second in everycategory of external funding in relation to NSU’s 17colleges, schools, and centers. In addition, the collegeis often recognized at the national level for both thequality and quantity of its research.

As you review this brochure, you will access datasubstantiating the outstanding growth that has oc-curred due to the dedicated efforts of our students, administration, and faculty and staff members. Becauseof NSU-COM’s esteemed reputation, over 90 percentof our students are able to match in their first or sec-

ond choice of residency. Additionally, we offer our stu-dents an opportunity to participate in several one-yearpredoctoral programs—a research fellowship and anosteopathic principles and practice fellowship—thatadvance the selected students’ skills in these areas. Wealso offer several dual- and joint-degree programs, which allow our students to further enhance theiroverall patient-care skills.

NSU-COM is very excited about the role it playsin regard to producing physicians who are truly com-passionate but also wholly prepared to provide thehighest level of care to their patients. In fact, many ofour graduates choose careers in medically under-served areas thanks to the national and internationalmedically underserved experiences they participatedin during their time at the college.

I look forward to your reviewing this brochureand learning about what makes NSU’s College of Os-teopathic Medicine so special.

When it comes to providing training to its third- and fourth-year students during their core clinicalrotations, NSU-COM places its students into a single hospital complex to ensure a quality edu-cation experience within an assigned curriculum. There are multiple affiliations with a wide arrayof community health centers, private physicians’ offices, and hospitals. In fact, 34 hospitals—in-cluding three statutory teaching hospitals: Largo Medical Center, Larkin Community Hospital, andMount Sinai Medical Center—currently have NSU-COM students assigned to their programs.

The Consortium for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME)—the osteopathic postdoctoral train-ing institution affiliated with NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine—was established in January1999 to further increase and enhance new and existing opportunities for postgraduate medicaltraining, internships, residencies, fellowships, and continuing education. The CEME is an alliance of21 hospitals located throughout Florida and the southeastern United States that are linked throughelectronic networks; teaching, research, and the community health collaborations; and a sharedcommitment to excellence in the education of tomorrow’s physicians.
