The all new Festival (5-7 July) promises to be a weekend of fun, with live music, outdoor film screenings and bags of activities for all the family in Northernhay Gardens and around the city.
Events are e ither free or affordable and we’ve provided you with a fantastic pull-out guide to the Festival on our centre pages.
It all kicks off on the Friday, with screenings of the hit Queen
flick Bohemian Rhapsody and The Greatest Showman, in the beautiful surrounds of Northernhay Gardens.
O n S a t u r d a y , c o m e a n d enjoy Festival in the Park, an afternoon of l ive music from local bands starting at 12pm, or buy tickets for the S a t u r d a y e v e n i n g m u s i c a l e x t r a v a g a n z a , w i t h s e t s from multi -platinum chart-topping band The Hoosiers and high-energy 10-piece band
Joey the Lips, performing Funk, Soul, Blues and Disco.
Sunday is a Family Fun Day i n t h e P a r k f e a t u r i n g a day of entertainment and activity for all the family in Northernhay Gardens.
The day k icks off with a screening of Mary Poppins Returns at 10am. People can buy tickets online and this will be the only ticketed event of the day.
From 12pm to 4pm, there will be a free four-hour programme of demonstrations on the stage, delivered by Legacy Leisure and dance company Capoeira Libertacao. There’s no need to book – just turn up and enjoy the fun.
A host of organisations are putting on activities in the park throughout the afternoon, including Exeter City Community Trust, Planet Earth Games,
St Luke’s School, South West Athletics Academy, Committed Dance Company, Ride On, Tennis for Free, Active Devon, Devon Wi ld l i fe Trust and Freemoovement.
A special Exeter Blue Boy trail will also be held on the day, a fun activity trial with things to find across the city to celebrate Exeter’s rich heritage and its famous Blue Boy statue.

“I have chosen Exeter’s leading health and wellbeing charity, CITY Community Trust. This is an organisation which is delivering vital projects and programmes in the heart of our community.
“Last year their fantastic teams delivered health, education and physical activity programmes that supported 45,000 people, aged three to 83, to lead active and healthier lives.” he told the Citizen. Peter was born in London and grew up in Essex. He first came to Devon in 1968 to train as a teacher at Rolle College in Exmouth. His first teaching post
was in Weston-super-Mare, where he met his wife Jacky.
Peter returned to Devon in 1981 when he became Headteacher of Cheriton Fitzpaine Primary School. From there he went on to be the Headteacher of two larger schools in Central Devon before making a career change to work for The Royal Mail. He retired in 2010, but went back to teaching as a supply teacher in Exeter. After becoming interested in politics he became a City Councillor for Pennsylvania in 2014. He continues to maintain
links with education and was Chair of Governors at his local primary school and still teaches on a voluntary basis.
Peter has lived in Exeter for 38 years and is happily married with two grown up sons. He enjoys sport, is a qualified football referee, as well as an active member of Wingfield Table Tennis Club. Peter’s deputy is Cllr Yolonda Henson, who was first elected onto the City Council in 1979 in what was the St Matthews. She was previously Mayor in 1992 and was awarded Freedom of the City in 2014.
New Lord Mayor, Cllr Peter Holland, has nominated CITY Community Trust as his charity and is delighted to be working with the Trust to raise awareness about its activities and assist with fund raising.

In a partnership that safeguards the Parks for years to come, the City Council has passed over the everyday management of the six green spaces to the Devon Wildlife Trust.
The partnership will improve the management of the parks for wildlife and improve and increase public access, so more people can enjoy these beautiful spaces.
As owners of the Valley Parks, the City Council is keen to provide more and more green spaces across the city.
In fact in the last 18 months the Council has increased the size of its green spaces by buying up 13 acres of privately owned land within the Valley Parks for people to enjoy.
The Valley Parks are a great place to unwind, take in nature, walk, jog, cycle or just relax and enjoy the views.
Getting out in countryside has been proven to benefit mental health and the City Council is leading the way in social prescribing.
Harry Barton, Chief Executive for Devon Wildl ife Trust , said: “We’re really excited by this opportunity. Exeter has wonderful and surprisingly varied green spaces, stretching along the stunning river Exe valley and covering several of the surrounding hills. We want to make sure every Valley Park is one of Devon’s top places to see wildlife in all its beauty and colour, and that the Parks are a source of pride for every resident of our great city.”

The River Exe runs through the City as a focal point for people to enjoy a run or a cycle along its banks or a meal out and a drink in the sunshine. There are ample opportunities to have a go at water sports and with the correct professional help this comes highly recommended.But the water presents dangers for people who go in unprepared including: • The height of the fall or jump if
tombstoning
• The depth of the water – this changes and is unpredictable
• Submerged objects may not be visible
• Obstacles or other people in the water
• Lack of safety equipment and increased difficulty for rescue
• The shock of cold water can make swimming difficult and increase the difficulty in getting out of the water
• Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away
• Uneven banks and river beds
• Water quality e.g. toxic algal blooms and industrial/agricultural pollution
The advice is clear: If you ever see someone in trouble in the water call 999 and ask for help, do not enter the water. Some locations along the waterfront have trained staff with access to throwlines. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue are hopeful that this project will expand. Please enjoy the water and Be Water Aware.
Every year more than 700 people drown in the UK and Ireland. Many more have non-fatal experiences, sometimes suffering life-changing injuries.

How wildlife friendly is your garden?
As part of the ongoing Exeter Wild City initiative – which also sees wildflower meadows cropping up across the city in partnership with the City Council – Devon Wildlife Trust also run a Wildlife Garden Award.
A plaque and wildflower seeds is awarded to those who have created space for wildlife in their garden.
Gardens are hugely important green spaces within the city and provide crucial environments for wildlife. Gardens provide food, water and shelter to many animals including birds, hedgehogs and bees.
The Exeter Wildlife Garden Award aims to recognise those who are doing their bit to help Exeter’s wildlife to thrive.
Love TopshamA community group has launched a LOVE TOPSHAM CARD to support independent shops and attract people to shop locally.
The donation scheme and discount card aims to encourage residents to shop locally whilst raising money for year-round activities to promote the town.
The annual Love Topsham Card is available to anyone who makes a minimum donation of just £3 per month (or a one-off payment of £36), and is also available to EX3 businesses who make a donation. Payments can be
made via the Love Topsham website, through a standing order with a bank or at a number of shops in town. Local businesses are then encouraged to make an exclusive offer for Love Topsham Cardholders.
The local community-based group, Love Topsham is leading the initiative, and the team is confident that the scheme will be a hit with local residents and regular visitors. Card holders will be able to get exclusive discounts and offers from many of the independents around the town.

What is the MRF?
Exeter City Council’s Materials Reclamation Facility (MRF) is where we sort all of Exeter’s domestic recycling. We also sort recycling from our commercial waste customers.
Ours is the only council-owned MRF in the region, and one of only a handful in the country.
We sell on the material we sort, to companies that recycle it into new things. This helps to fund public services in Exeter, whereas black bin rubbish actually costs public money to burn at the Energy Recovery Facility in Marsh Barton.
We have 26 people working in the MRF, with 18 on the line picking off the material. We also have various pieces of mechanical sorting equipment.
Our abi l ity to sort and sel l recyclable material ourselves means we can make a difference across the region.
Cross-district working
Our plastic is very high quality: our clear bottles are able to be made into new clear bottles and we are involved with the Dairy Roadmap, which sees our milk bottles turned back into new milk bottles.
We are working with other local authorities to sell on their plastic. This is doubly beneficial: Exeter gains an income from it and, because the material is sorted properly, it is able to be recycled into higher quality items rather than sold off as cheap ‘mixed’ plastic.
Quality is as important as quantity. If plastic is to retain its ability to be recycled, for instance, then it needs to be sorted into different types effectively. Extending the useable life of plastics is so important.
We never had to sell our plastic to China, because it was of a high enough quality to be sold to UK and European companies.
Recycling ocean plastic
Our ability to sort plastic so well enabled us to co-found Ocean Recovery Project with Keep Britain Tidy’s Beachcare initiative.
Plastic collected from South West beaches is brought to our MRF to be sorted and sent for recycling.
The plastic is made into kayaks by Odyssey Innovation Ltd (pictured above) and bins for plastic that are placed on beaches, among other things.

The new service is available for black, green and brown garden waste bin collections - allows
householders to get email reminders the night before the bins are due out for collection.

Night shelter proves big success
Exeter’s night shelter supported 194 rough sleepers over the winter and will open up again in November thanks to the City Council securing extra funding.
Since opening in November, the facility - dubbed The Junction - has provided a total of 3,239 bed nights and given shelter, allowing those sleeping rough to come inside on some of the coldest nights.
The shelter has allowed the City Council and its partners Julian House and BCHA to engage with service users and help safeguard some of the most excluded and vulnerable people in the city.
As well as proving a life saver, the shelter in Magdalen Street – formerly Spice Island Indian restaurant – has allowed staff from the City Council team to talk to those who have complex lives in a safe and stable environment and try and find longer term housing solutions. A total of 32 people have successfully moved on into private sector or supported accommodation.
The council works throughout the year to ensure that those using the shelter have a move on plan in place.
One of the great things about the initiative has been the community support that has underpinned the service. An alliance of Exeter church groups has delivered hot food for clients seven nights a week and a team of volunteers have contributed alongside staff throughout the project.
Moving forward, there’s positive news with the City Council successfully securing £444,000 from the government to help run the facility next winter. This comes on top of recent awards of £348,450 for the Rapid Rehousing Pathway and £120,800 through the Private Rented Access Fund.
The extra funding will also enable the expansion of the Council’s Housing First Project from five accommodation units to 15 over the coming year as well as supporting other homelessness projects.

Ten Summer in the city
There’s lots going on in the city over the summer.
Exeter celebrates Armed Forces Day on Saturday 22 June with a parade of military servicemen past and present through the High Street.
On 4 July, the white glove is hoisted above the city as Exeter upholds the tradition of the Lammas Fair. The annual ceremony dates back to before the Norman Conquest, more than 900 years ago.
The day gets underway with the Lord Mayor’s procession of the Lammas Glove, which sets off from the Civic Centre at 11am. Made up of civic dignitaries and school children, some in fancy dress, the parade will travel down the High Street to the Guildhall, where the proclamation will be read and the Glove displayed from the balcony for a period of three days.

Co Bikes, Exeter’s on demand electr ic bike scheme, is expanding this summer to just under 100 bikes rolling out to 20 locations around the city. As well as existing locations, new ones wil l include Cranbrook, Heavitree High Street and Honiton Road Park and Ride.
To u s e , s i m p l y r e g i s t e r and rent with the nextbike app: it costs just £1 per 20 minutes or, if you’re making a day of it, £24 for hires between 8 and 24 hours. When you’ve finished your trip, return and lock your bike at any Co Bikes station.
Bikes have a top speed of 15mph and a range of 40 miles and, because they’re electrically assisted, cycling
uphill is a breeze – ideal for tackling the city’s terrain and you won’t end up feeling all hot and sweaty!

A big thank you to everyone who took part in the City Council’s consultation on physical activity.
Work on Exeter’s flood defences is almost complete.The £26 million scheme will enable more than 2,000 homes and businesses in the city to be better protected against flood.
The flood defences have been funded by the Environment Agency, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council.
Exeter suffered from severe flooding in 1960 when over 1,000 properties were flooded twice within a few months and the city was cut in half. A major flood alleviation scheme was
subsequently designed and built to defend against similar floods.
However it was revealed that the defences built in the 60s and 70s weren’t substantial enough to protect homes from more severe floods and a new scheme offering more protection was started.
The latest defences are spread around key locations where flooding is considered a risk and include a variety of solid walls and moveable barriers.
