“I usually claim that pregnant women should not read books about pregnancy and birth. Their time is too precious. They should, rather, watch the moon and sing to their baby in the womb.”

Learning While Watching Television

Gen Y grew up watching

They expected truth, accuracy and help figuring things out.

Now they watch

They still expect truth, accuracy and help figuring things out.

But do they receive it?

As the famed author Aldous Huxley once said, facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored!

WhatInside Childbirth Education

Says about Social Media

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

Who are the people in our childbirth classes?

• Members of Generation or Millenials • were born between 1980-1992 (ages 20-32)• are digital natives whereas their parents were not• have shorter attention spans• are resistant to lectures• prefer action to talking• have a low threshold for print sources• are more comfortable sharing information

67% say they would be lost without their computer, tablet or smart phone

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

…and what do they want?

Gen Y learners prefer:• visual imagery• creative thinking• going in to get what they need then get out• large variety of activities• not to be locked in learning loops• engaging, gaming activities• sharing openly

Why do we miss the mark in getting Gen Y into childbirth classes?

Who are the decision-makers for CBE programs? What do they know about 20-30 year olds? Also how many marketing departments are run by technical literate

heads who know about new tools and technologies that Gen Y is using? A lot of the tools that Gen Y use to share (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) are fun and somewhat addicting.

WHY IS SOCIAL MEDIA “ADDICTING”?

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

According to Social Media researcher Paul Zak,

oxytocin release percentages are in double digits when using

Can Social Media Be Used For Learning?

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

Learning is the act or process of developing skill or knowledge. Modern, web-based learning and computing provides the means for fundamentally changing the way in which instruction is delivered to students.

Can we do a makeover and

retain high touch family centered maternity care?

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

The Answer is YES!

We have the all of the evidence-based information, we just need to put it into the format!

Social media

Online learning

Online video references

Evidence based websites for further learning

“The icon in our books directs them to this website, which in turn leads them to resource links for the topics in the handbook.”

“The concept of the online program began in 2002 originally as an alternative for bedrest patients. I was concerned about expectant parents surfing the Internet and finding misinformation. I also wanted to provide an evidence-based medium for hospitals”

~ Dianne Moran RN, LCCE, ICDProduct Development, CCI

Copyright Perinatal Education Associates, Inc.

“An online program will never take the place of person-to-person childbirth education. With Gen Y, if we don’t give our information to expectant parents in the way they learn, we are failing.”

~ Dianne Moran

The Positive Side of Social Media/Online Learning

Comfort of expectant parents’ own home

Reaches bedrest clients

Cost effective for the facility (if online for birth center or hospital)

More access to information by more people

Timing is convenient

Some Things About Learners Have NOT Changed

Malcolm Knowles*, a pioneer in the study of adult learning, observed that adults learn best when:

They understand why something is important to know or do. They have the freedom to learn in their own way. Learning is experiential. The time is right for them to learn. The process is positive and encouraging.
