Why is it important to teach about Sustainable Development?

The World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 defined Sustainable Development as “forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” Our present actions have major implications on the future if we misuse our environment now, we are limiting our resources for the future. We must educate our students on the consequences of their actions as consumers and citizens of this planet. We must compromise our needs and wants on a social, environmental and economic level and understand how these correlate to one another.

Teaching Sustainability: The 21st

Century Learning Curve.“Sustainability is perhaps the most urgent and important topic to understand in today’s world. Students in school are joining the rest of society to take a close look at the health of our planet. Since 1972, the UN Environment Program has been reporting on the Earth’s vital signs. More than 1,360 experts worldwide participated in the most recent state-of-the-art scientific appraisal of the condition and trends in the world’s ecosystems, from 2001-2005. Seven years ago they concluded that, in every natural domain, the Earth is under very severe stress.”

Ideas – Waste Not, Want Not… Not in the 21st Century

Waste is an important issue, but it’s also worthy. Zero waste sounds good and what we should be doing, but makes no mention of resource use. There are the 3 Rs, re-use, recycle or refurbish which is what second hand shops, auctions, car boot sales, salvage yards, jumble sales and the free cycle network do. There are charity shops on every high street and some specialize in vintage or haute couture clothes or books, but buying second hand is still a minority pursuit in the UK, but not of course if something is antique.

Fair Trade Fair trade sets out to create better trading conditions for farmers and workers in poor countries. This social movement started in the late 1940’s and seeks to address this inequity. With better working conditions and prices for their goods and less negative environmental impact people have a chance to improve their lives: feed themselves, send their children to school, and meet their basic needs which is the right of every person on this planet. Students will make a connection between hunger, poverty, and non-living wages; they will understand the concept of Fair Trade.
