In the 116 years since our founding in 1904, Presbyterian Homes has weathered many storms — from two World Wars and

The Spanish Flu Pandemic to The Great Depression and numerous other times of uncertainty. Yet through it all, our faith-based mission to provide vibrant communities for older adults that inspire wellness,

independence, joy and security has remained strong and clear.

2020 has taught us that there is, indeed, joy and security in community — especially during the hardest times. We’ve learned

that, while independence is valuable and important, we are stronger when we face challenges together. Covid-19 has both

tested and proven our resolve and our resilience. We have come far, and we are well-prepared to take on whatever the future holds.

As we prepared this year’s annual report, we were in the center of the Covid-19 pandemic. And, while there are always plenty of

accomplishments to share, we have chosen to dedicate the bulk of this annual report to highlighting both the seen and unseen heroes who

make our organization such a strong and shining example of community.

“Since the pandemic began, the board’s main focus has been on the health and well-being of residents and staff. We are grateful for the selfless dedication

of our leadership team and staff members who have all made personal sacrifices during this time.”

PAULA NOBLE

“Our board, executive leadership and operational teams remain focused on effectively serving our community

members. It is a privilege to be part of a mission-driven organization with the leadership, staff and resources to ‘keep calm and carry on’ during challenging times.”

TODD F. SWORTZEL

“With strength and resilience, the Presbyterian Homes team continues to keep our communities protected and

vibrant. The organization has never come together better and I am amazed at how every member of our staff has stepped up to keep residents safe and secure.”

NADIM ABI-ANTOUN

“I am proud to be part of such a strong, well-managed organization. When the pandemic hit, we were able to quickly allocate the funds needed to ensure our staff

would have the proper protective equipment to do their jobs safely. You can’t put a price on that kind of security.”

Page 5: Geneva Foundation Annual Report...As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission has always been to do what’s right for the people we serve. In the face of Covid-19,

In our 2018 annual report, we began this letter with a quote from the English poet John Donne, who wrote, “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” At the time we could not have predicted that, only two short years later, this truth would be driven home in a most poignant way.

Fiscal year 2020 was filled with the daily ins and outs of running our communities, caring for residents, stewarding our resources, and planning for the future. Yet, while we were hard at work developing Presbyterian Homes’ next multi-year strategic plan, a new term brought a shift in our focus: Covid-19.

The rate at which Covid-19 turned from something happening on a distant continent to a very real challenge in our own back yards was sobering. In what felt like the blink of an eye, our minds were filled with new thoughts, our days with new challenges, and our hearts with new prayers. Yet, one of the truest tests of an organization like ours is how we respond when the unthinkable happens.

As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission has always been to do what’s right for the people we serve. In the face of Covid-19, our leadership and employees leapt into action and have never hesitated to do whatever it takes to keep residents safe, healthy and happy. The Board paused all non-critical capital expenditures. We immediately authorized exceptional, off-budget spending for the purchase of an additional $250,000 in personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff and residents. (This figure quickly rose to $800,000.) We also instituted a three-month “extraordinary pay” increase for our employees, who showed remarkable dedication as they continued to come to work every day despite the frightening unknowns surrounding the Coronavirus, the daily changes to their roles, and long days marked by the personal discomfort of constantly wearing PPE. Residents and their families rose to the occasion with cooperation, understanding and enthusiastic support of our staff — demonstrating the true meaning of community.

It is with great pride in every member of the Presbyterian Homes family that we present this annual report as a testament to the strength and resilience of our organization and its people. As we look to the future, we realize there are many things we still don’t know. But we do know this: We are always stronger together.

Page 6: Geneva Foundation Annual Report...As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission has always been to do what’s right for the people we serve. In the face of Covid-19,

Presbyterian Homes’ commitment to keeping residents and staff healthy extended far beyond infection control, PPE and social distancing. As an organization dedicated to whole-person, multi-dimensional wellness, we realize the equally vital importance of social, emotional, mental and spiritual health. So, when Covid-19 put our community into quarantine, staff members and residents got creative.

What we witnessed at Westminster Place, The Moorings and Lake Forest Place was the power of community and thousands of acts of kindness, both large and small. Staff catered to every need and delivered countless moments of joy through various deliveries including an ice cream cart, a mobile farmer’s market, and a cocktail cart complete with an accompanying “Zoom Cocktail Hour.” There were Easter baskets, Mother’s Day flowers and gifts on Father’s Day. Sing-alongs were held on balconies, spiritual services and Bible studies were held online, residents played virtual games, and all manner of entertaining and informative shows were created for our in-house television channels.

Residents made posters and wrote notes to thank and encourage staff members and essential workers. They sent home-baked goodies to staff and fellow residents. And, in a moving show of community spirit and camaraderie, staff changing shifts were greeted by cheering sections made up of corporate staff, executive directors, fellow employees and residents — all there to let them know their hard work and sacrifices were so greatly appreciated.

Page 7: Geneva Foundation Annual Report...As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission has always been to do what’s right for the people we serve. In the face of Covid-19,

Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of a quarantine is the potential for isolation and feeling forgotten. The human spirit yearns to be surrounded by loved ones during difficult times but, when battling a pandemic, physical togetherness is one of the first things we are asked to sacrifice.

The dedicated team members at our communities weren’t willing to accept isolation as a new way of life for those we serve. In addition to finding ways to see residents each day, staff arranged countless video calls so residents could see and talk with friends and family members — both nearby and around the world. They also facilitated “window visits” for families who wanted to see their loved ones in person, and spent untold hours communicating with families via emails and telephone calls.

Residents also used video-conferencing to maintain social ties within their communities. They played games and met virtually with their breakfast clubs, book clubs, and interest groups to stay connected and maintain a sense of routine. We also saw a resurgence in more “old-fashioned” means of keeping in touch, as cards and letters were sent and received every day with the help of staff volunteers who delivered mail to residents’ homes. Neighbors, church members and children in our surrounding towns also sent welcome messages of hope and encouragement to residents and staff.

Presbyterian Homes’ leadership regularly communicated with residents and families through letters and daily informational broadcasts, answering questions and letting residents know about every measure being taken to ensure their health and safety.

Page 8: Geneva Foundation Annual Report...As a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission has always been to do what’s right for the people we serve. In the face of Covid-19,

A pandemic may make us take extraordinary measures such as sheltering in place, maintaining social distancing and wearing masks, but it can’t keep us from exercising, growing, learning and being creative. Residents at our communities found many ways to stay active in mind and body. They took on new hobbies and spent more time on the things they’ve always enjoyed. They sewed masks, quilted and knitted for charity. They took walks with their dogs and with each other — socially distanced, of course. They reached out to each other in whatever ways they could and built camaraderie with an all-for-one, one-for-all spirit.

Presbyterian Homes staff have also been working hard to provide new programs and activities for residents. Regular fitness programming has been broadcast on our in-house television channels with morning and afternoon classes to help residents maintain strength, flexibility and balance. This programming has been so popular that we expect it to continue even after the threat of Covid-19 has diminished. There also have been lifelong learning classes via Zoom® including a Lake Forest College class appropriately themed and entitled “Literature of Resilience.” There have been lessons in art and design, virtual sing-alongs, and even cooking shows starring our own dining services staff.

What all of this has shown us is that there is no limit to what can be accomplished and overcome through ingenuity, determination and the can-do spirit that is so prevalent in our communities.

GOING THE EXTRA MILEPRESBYTERIAN HOMES 2020 ANNUAL REPORT 7

There’s nothing our staff and leadership won’t do to keep residents

safe, healthy and happy

Presbyterian Homes’ exceptional reputation has been earned, in part, because we’re never satisfied with “good enough.” Going the extra mile is second nature and an ingrained part of our organizational culture. So, it’s no surprise that every area of our organization has been transformed and adapted to meet the challenge of Covid-19.

In every community, staff have volunteered to take on new or additional roles. Our dining services department has given new meaning to the term “take-out” and been assisted by employees from across our organization in the monumental task of delivering meals to every resident’s home. Our spiritual life and chaplaincy teams transformed the way they deliver worship services and provided additional opportunities for Bible study and fellowship via virtual meetings and our internal television channel. Staff from many departments have made regular calls to check on residents and delivered anything they needed. Front-line staff have worn uncomfortable PPE for days on end, volunteered to serve new residents who were asked to quarantine for their first 14 days, and conducted community-wide testing for Covid-19. Plus, a very special group stepped forward, volunteering to care exclusively for Covid-positive residents, should the need arise.

Your corporate leadership team has been working remotely in many cases, but no less fervently. And, while many organizations have laid off or furloughed employees, we are proud to say that Presbyterian Homes has attained our goal of keeping every staff member in all our communities employed.

8 PRESBYTERIAN HOMES 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

As a not-for-profit organization, Presbyterian Homes directs significant resources toward the betterment of our communities for the benefit of current and future residents. While FY 2020 brought new and unexpected demands on our resources, our organization is strong, our mission remains true, and our communities continue to seek opportunities for continuous improvement. Following are just a few highlights.

PRESBYTERIAN HOMES During FY 2020, Presbyterian Homes received the following three prestigious endorsements:

• An A- credit rating from both FITCH and Standard & Poor’s. Out of approximately 2,000 senior living communities like Presbyterian Homes in the U.S., only 49 have an “A-category” FITCH Rating.

• The exclusive Seal of Excellence from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) — an award we’ve earned every year since 1990. Presbyterian Homes is one of only seven senior living organizations in Illinois — and one of only 300 nationwide — to earn this prestigious recognition.

• The AVP Seal of Actuarial Balance from A.V. Powell & Associates. This seal indicates that a retirement community is operating on a sound actuarial basis and has achieved and maintained the best financial practices for CCRC management.

WESTMINSTER PLACEWestminster Place leadership is currently developing a master plan to guide improvements and programming for several years to come. Among the items addressed will be improved services for those who experience cognitive impairments, creating a best-in-class dining experience, and expanding the community’s fitness programs and rehabilitation. LAKE FOREST PLACEAt Lake Forest Place, phase one of the lower-level renovation project has been completed. Residents can now enjoy an expanded art studio, newly decorated guest rooms, updated ground-level restrooms, and a beautiful new salon/spa for hair, nail and massage services. THE MOORINGS OF ARLINGTON HEIGHTSWith the enthusiastic endorsement of its resident council, The Moorings has begun an initiative to more effectively leverage the experience, strengths and expertise of residents in areas such as programming, fundraising, referrals, mentoring and volunteerism. In addition, the community is exploring ways to expand telehealth options.

As we have looked back over the past year — and especially the last several months — there are certain words that stand out: community, strength,

resilience, kindness, mission, sacrifice and, perhaps most of all, gratitude. We are grateful to every member of our community who has played a

part in fulfilling our mission, sharing our vision, and living out our values as an organization dedicated first and foremost to the health, safety and

well-being of those who call our communities home.

We know we are not yet finished with Covid-19. We acknowledge that the future will require new ways of thinking, being and doing. But we are

confident we can weather any challenge because we are stronger together.

GRATITUDEMarked by

Presbyterian Homes would like to extend a special note of gratitude to those people and organizations who stepped forward to help meet specific needs

related to our Covid-19 response. You are what community is all about.
