Consideration for
Generalization of
Results
Objectives • Explain how to generalize research
results;
• identify the dos and don't in making
generalizations;
• interpret research data; and
• deal with expected and unexpected
results
Generalization - A general statement: a statement
about a group of people or things that is based on only
a few people or things in the group
Interpretation - The act or result of explaining or
interpreting something: the way something is
explained or understand
Consideration for
Generalization of Results
➜sampling plays an important
role in research inasmuch as
generalization of research
results are based from the
samples of the study
➜generalization or conclusion
should be drawn only for the
population and circumstances
for which the evidence have
been collected.
💑 👪
Doing any of these reflect a sense of immaturity and lack of
objectivty on the part of the reasearcher
Speculations or
assumptions not
supported by findings
must be avoided
Opinionated
statements or inclusive
and sweeping
statements not
supported by research
evidence must also be
avoided
Broad
generalizations not
adequately
supported by
research data should
be avoided
👪💑
➜It is important to differentiate
between results that merely describe
and results that are intended to allow
inference, because it directly affect
what we can be conclude from the
study.
➜Research results that only describe
or explain cannot be used to predict
future outcomes or to directly identify
the cause of the findings
👪💑
-According to Calderon & Gonzalez (1993),
interpretation involves making “inferences
pertinent to the research relation”
investigated from where generalization are
drawn.
-Interpretation reflects the researcher's own
understanding of the research results which
are guided by logic and reason, established
theories, and previous findings.
-Qualitative data requires understanding,
digesting, synthesizing, conceptualizing,
and conceptualizing descriptions of
feelings, behaviours, experiences, and
ideas.
Interpretation of Data
Expected vs.
Unexpected Result
- A contradictory results does
not mean that the study is bad
or incorrect, but it suggest the
idea of further investigation
an unexpected result may be
attributed to the research
methodology
👪💑
👪💑
THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF RESEARCH WHICH IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE IS
THEREFORE DEFEATED. ONE SHOULD ALWAYS THINK THAT AN UNEXPECTED RESULT OPEN AN
AVENUE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH

Thank you for listening and God bless!!
