Seminar for Spring 2018 Professor Diana Liverman GC 597A - Global Change Workshop (3 credits) Human Dimensions of Global Change Time: Tuesday 3pm-5.30pm Room: ENR2 S495 This seminar will focus on the human dimensions of global environmental change with a particular focus on the societal causes and consequences of larger scale changes in climate and land cover and the associated policy responses from local to global. Over the course of the semester we will explore the history and current status of social science approaches to global environmental change from several theoretical perspectives (e.g. political economy, feminism) by interrogating key concepts (e.g. sustainability, vulnerability, Anthropocene, climate justice), by looking at how social science is used in key assessments (e.g. IPCC), and by examining the work of leading scholars (e.g. Frank Biermann, Harriett Bulkeley, Eric Lambin) and emerging researchers (papers based on recent PhD dissertations). Coursework will include short essays about people and concepts, analysis of data and texts (e.g. SDGs, Paris Agreement), preparing for discussions, and a final course paper. Some of the activities will include group work. This seminar is a core course for the Global Change minor but may also be of interest to other students working in areas such as climate, environmental governance, or political ecology.
