The Beginning of Lent
The first Sunday of Lent is Sunday 1st March when there will be a service
to mark the beginning of Lent at 10.30am in King’s Cliffe Church.
In Lent we are invited to reflect on and consider our priorities, our hopes
and aspirations and to consider changes and adjustments that we may
decide to make to our daily living.
In the Gospels we read about Jesus spending time in the desert. He learns
more about humility, about living lightly, about being compassionate and
how kind words and kind actions can make so much difference to the lives
of others.
Each week in Lent there will be a gathering in King’s Cliffe Church to think
about prayer and how praying can make a difference to living out the way
of Jesus and his more human way of living. The first session will be at
7.45pm on Thursday 5th March. Tea and coffee served from 7.30pm.
Mothering Sunday will be on Sunday 22nd March and we have two special
services: 10.30am in King’s Cliffe Church and 5.00pm at Laxton. All are
welcome. Philip Davies

Social Committee Church Coffee Morning: Thank you very much to Mia McAughtie for welcoming
us into her home for a relaxing Coffee Morning with lovely refreshments and time
to chat. Many thanks to everyone who made the delicious cakes, provided raffle
prizes, sold raffle tickets and did the washing-up. The event raised £136 for
church funds. Our next Coffee Morning will be at 10.30am on 11th March at
1, Howards Meadow. Everyone is welcome.
Bring and Buy Sale: An assortment of nearly-new items for sale and a selection of
tasty cakes, tea and coffee contributed to an enjoyable morning at the Bring and
Buy Sale. It was lovely to see new people in the church who commented on the
warm and welcoming atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who helped baking
and selling cakes, pouring tea and coffee, selling goods, and taking away
unwanted items. We took £365 which will go into church funds. Mandy Barber
King’s Cliffe Ecumenical Women’s Fellowship Group In February we were pleased to welcome to our meeting Canon Philip who gave a
talk based on the symbols used within the stained-glass window above the altar.
Thank you Philip for your interesting insights into this wonderful window.
Instead of meeting on the first Thursday of March, we shall meet at the World
Day of Prayer Service on Friday, 6th March at 12.00 noon in King’s Cliffe Church.
This service has been prepared by a working party in Zimbabwe and will be used
in services throughout the world. A light lunch will be provided after the service.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Christine Ball
KC Ladies Group Most of the regular ladies will already know that this group is disbanding and no
further Monday lunchtime meetings will take place. Thanks to everyone who has
been involved in the group over the years and particular thanks to Diana Lloyd
who has been the ‘leader’ since it’s formation. Pat Hawkins
King’s Cliffe Heritage Centre Your Heritage Centre at 27, Bridge Street will be open to visit on Sunday 22nd
March from 2.00 to 5pm. Entry is free, so come and find out about the village’s
interesting past through our displays and digital archives. We’re open on the 4th
Sunday of each month and on Bank Holidays from February to October. You can
arrange to visit at other times by calling us on 0843 8869395. There is level access
via a ramp at the rear of the building, but no toilet facilities on site. Parking is on
Bridge Street. Sue Trow-Smith

King’s Cliffe Parish Council Have you considered becoming a Parish Councillor? A leaflet will shortly be
distributed to all households and any prospective councillors are invited to attend
an informal chat at KC Active at 7.00 pm on Thursday 12th March. You are then
invited to attend our monthly meeting to see what’s involved.
Pathways/Potholes: The Parish Council attended a site meeting with Ben Wright,
Area Manager for Northamptonshire Highways, and our County Councillor
Annabel de Capell Brooke regarding the general condition of paths within King’s
Cliffe and we have been assured that they will be doing some repairs. Here is the
link for reporting these issues: https://fixmystreet.northamptonshire.gov.uk.
Soakaway, Wood Road: A meeting is arranged as Persimmon Homes have
instructed for works to be completed to rectify issues identified with the
soakaway to rectify the drainage issues. These works will be carried out towards
the end of February. The Chairman declared an interest in 19/151 and left the
meeting. Vice Chairman Cllr M Day continued the meeting.
Oak Lane Trees: The dead trees have now been replaced and we would like to
formally thank Councillor Jenny Dixon for all her work on this matter.
Great British Spring Clean 2020: We have agreed to sign up and organise a
participating group between 20th March and 13th April. We will organise some
dates and get some bags etc from ENDC. We last did this a couple of years ago
but the response was very poor – it would be great to think this time we will have
a better response and tidy up our village and its approaches.
Street Lighting : We have instructed E-On to install two new street lights, one on
Wood Road in between Street Lights 63 and 64 and the second outside 57 Bridge
Street. Tracey Green (Parish Clerk)

March. We’ll be very pleased to welcome you from 2.00pm until last orders at
4.30pm. Come for a leisurely pot of tea or coffee, a warming hot chocolate or
fruit squash drink with a choice of our homemade cakes and scones or buttery
toasted tea-bread. On the sales table, we have a great variety of new-season
marmalades alongside our homemade jams and our Book Corner beckons too!
Find the Village Hall on foot via Eagle Lane off West Street (beside the shop) or by

King’s Cliffe Gardeners’ Association This month’s meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 25th March at KC
Active when we will be pleased to welcome back Adam Pasco, a qualified
horticulturalist, broadcaster and gardening journalist. His talk this time is Spring
into Action and Get Set for Summer. Members and non-members are welcome –
just turn up at the door.
Jobs for March: Last chance to plant bare-root fruit trees. Control aphids and
other pests on fruit but don’t spray when in blossom. Apply a nitrogen feed to
plums, cherries, cooking apples and pears. Late plantings of raspberries,
strawberries and gooseberries are still possible. Repot or top dress container-
grown fruit if needed. Divide perennials and add new plants. Seed sowing for
flowers should now be at its height including summer bedding. Be more cautious
with half hardy varieties – sow in a heated greenhouse or indoors.
Try to avoid digging in wet weather, but if gardening on wet soil, work from a
plank of wood to avoid treading on the bed and compacting the soil. Cultivate
and prepare seedbeds, covering them with clear polythene or fleece to warm up
the soil before sowing early vegetable seeds, if the weather is clement, e.g.
beetroot, broad beans, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, carrot, spinach. Meanwhile
get salads, tomato, cucumber, aubergine, peppers started indoors. Protect
brassicas from pigeons and watch for mildew. Lindsay Kubicki
Communicare It is with great regret that the proposed destinations for this year’s holidays have
not attracted the minimum number of travellers so Clare Wagstaffe has had to
cancel the provisional bookings with the hotels in Torquay and Lytham St Annes.
If, after reading this, anyone feels they might be interested in taking advantage of
a fully-organized short-break holiday later this year, please get in touch with Clare
(01780 470437 or email: [email protected]). If enough people express an
interest she may be able to come up with a suitable destination for a coach
holiday including hotel accommodation, all travel, including daily trips, and
insurance. The luxury coach with our regular, much-loved driver, Phil, would pick
up from all local villages.
The General Patients’ Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 31st March and our
regular Social Group Coffee Mornings continue at 10.00am on Friday 20th March
at KC Active. Future get-togethers will be on 17th April, 22nd May and 12th June.
These morning events are a good opportunity to come along and find out what is
happening. Wendy Spencer

King’s Cliffe Old Blokes Club Our next lunch meeting will be held on 3rd March and there will be a Club visit to
Brooklands on 16th March. The Get Fitter activities take place on Wednesdays,
with men meeting at 10.00am, women at 11.30am and a mixed group at 12.30pm
on Fridays. Chris Jackson (03330 113776)
Underground Centre (Lower Floor Village Hall) Do you have bookkeeping/accounting experience and have a few hours per
month to spare? Underground are looking for a new Treasurer to join our team
as our current Treasurer is resigning in a few months after many years of
dedicated service. This is a volunteer position, working closely with our
Development Manager, Katy Weeks and the Underground Trustees. We are a
very friendly bunch! Tasks would include:
• Ensuring all our transactions are correctly recorded and analysed on our
Quickbooks system.
• Running reports and reporting the financial activity to the Trustees.
• Attending a quarterly Management Team meeting.
We anticipate a monthly commitment of around six hours on average. This is an
exciting time to join our team as we develop our systems, extend our networks
and work towards the long term sustainability of this thriving village charity. If
you can help us, or would like any further information, please contact the Chair of
Trustees, Jeanne Atkinson at [email protected]
Under 1’s: Underground has a new group for Under 1’s. We’re open Mondays
and Wednesdays 1pm to 3pm. Drop in any time to meet other mums/carers,
enjoy a protected space for your little one and a breather if needed (there will be
lots of willing arms for baby cuddles!)
Drop-in for Yrs 7-11: Underground is open on Friday evenings from 5.30 – 7pm
for Yrs 7 to 11. Call in any time between these times to meet up with friends, use
the facilities at Underground (air hockey, darts, pool, table football and table
tennis), listen to music or just have some time to yourself after a busy week at
school. All welcome.
Katy Weeks (Development Manager [email protected])
King’s Cliffe Memorial Hall Our AGM will take place in the Village Hall on Tuesday 10th March starting at
8.00pm. Everyone is most welcome to attend and refreshments will be available
from 7.30pm. Simon Wilson (Chair of Memorial Hall Trustees)

Transition King’s Cliffe for environment and community
BikeFix: Our monthly bike-fixing operation is starting again
in April and will be running on the first Saturday of each
month from 10.00am to 12.00 noon throughout the Spring
and Summer. Our resident mechanics will help you sort
out little problems on your bike like brakes, gears and flat
tyres for free or a small donation. Find us on Forest
Approach. Our aim is to get more people onto their bikes,
and reduce our dependence on cars!
Wildplaces: Our February Workparty was fun, cutting back the brambles on
King’s Cliffe Meadow to prevent the sheep getting caught up in them. 15 people
turned out a day early to avoid storm Ciara so Vince and his friends can now graze
in safety!
We held our annual planning meeting in February and concluded that, with the
significant work still to be done on the new railway path, we would not be taking
on any additional development projects this year. However, there are plenty of
ongoing maintenance jobs still to do, so no resting on your laurels. Do come
along to our regular Workparties and lend a hand.
For March we will be back in the railway cutting at Meadow Bridge – the old
bridge between Wood Lane and Willow Lane. We will be removing more of the
ash saplings and other more aggressive scrub to allow the wildflowers to get their
heads up on the sunny bank there. Last year we had a really good show of
pollinators and butterflies here. Meeting from 10.30am on 8th March, we will be
using secateurs, loppers and trowels. We do have a few tools, but please bring
your own if you have them. Proper footwear, and definitely gloves please.
Community Minibus: Don’t forget that Transition operates the community self-
drive minibus, available for outings throughout the year, This is run as a non-profit
project, so rates are really reasonable! Contact [email protected] to
book your slot.
Contact: If you want more information about any of our activities or want to get
involved, please get in touch: [email protected]

The Way We Were
10
The Way We Were We continue with the memories of Jim Brown about village life in the 1920s and 30s:
“There were many shops. Mr Ellis in Park Street [no 20] was a qualified chemist
and was also the newsagent. He was Clerk to the Parish Council and several of
the village charities. He was a familiar figure in his bowler hat. He used to collect
the Water Rates and was also a magistrate. He sang bass in the Church Choir and
was in great demand at village concerts for his rendition of comic songs.
“Another magistrate was Mr Fred Edgson who was a grocer and outfitter in Park
Street [no 4]. His family had kept the shop for generations before him. He was
another great public servant: Chairman of the Parish Council, School Governor
and Almshouse Charity Trustee.
“Robert Green sold clothing from his Park Street premises and was also an
insurance agent [in the terrace of houses which stood where the bus pull-in and
green are now].
“Bert Bailey kept the corner grocers [opposite the Cross Keys] and Mr William
Hakes a small grocery business in what we then called High Street [shop at no 11
West Street]. After Bert Bailey retired, his shop and house were taken over by Mr
Hakes who was eventually succeeded by his son Ron.
“Mr Fryer had the grandest shop of all [at 40 West Street] and my mother used to
send me there for groceries. I can remember the smells of ground coffee and
smoked bacon. If you wanted treacle it used to come from a porcelain jar with a
tap. The walls were lined with drawers with the names of all the commodities on
them. On his lovely brass scales he would weigh currants, sultanas, candied peel
– in fact virtually everything was weighed and made into neat parcels while you
waited. Mr Fryer was a great Churchman and for many years was Churchwarden
and Treasurer.
“For some years Mrs Annie Milford kept a grocers and general shop in West
Street [at no 39, now called Clockmakers Cottage]. The quaintest shop of all was
Mrs Dixons [at ‘Elf Cottage’, no 68 West Street]. The shop was very small and
dark and had an oil lamp hanging from the ceiling. The stone floor was always
spotlessly clean. Mrs Dixon used to come into the shop from her living room,
wearing an ‘Arden’ apron [a wrap-around overall] if she had been doing
housework. She was a widow, a kind gentle lady who lived to a ripe old age. [In
1947 Mrs Milford moved to Elf Cottage from no 39 and took over what had been
Mrs Dixon’s shop.]
“As well as these shopkeepers, there were two butchers, three bakers, and other
tradesmen.” We’ll find out more about these from Jim Brown next month.

Nature Notes
11
Nature Notes for February and March Unlike previous years, when the garden bird feeders have brought a steady
stream of finches and tits throughout the day, this year has proved to be very
sparse. A wide range of seeds has made little difference with only a few blue tits
and occasional long tailed tits making an appearance.
So, a visit to Frampton marshes on the Wash near Boston was called for. During
the Winter months the area is blessed with huge flocks of geese and plovers.
After a prolonged wet spell the meadows were flooded with only ridges of
grassland protruding.
These grassy refuges were
densely packed with Golden
Plovers, an estimated 14,000
rubbing shoulders with one
another and chattering loudly.
They were constantly vigilant for
marauding predators of which
there were several.
Suddenly, they took to the air, alarmed by a Merlin looking for easy pickings.
Forming into a series of murmurations spread across the sky, they twisted and
wheeled in a sequence of movements intended to confuse the attacker. During
this display their golden, speckled backs and white underparts shimmered and
flashed in the sunlight. A truly spectacular sight , which abruptly ended as the
danger passed and they settled back to their refuge on the ground to await the
next threat. They would not have to wait long as first a Peregrine and then a
Marsh Harrier looked for a meal. With each attack they took to the air, delivering
an amazing flying display on a grand scale. Later in the day a Hen Harrier would
probably make its presence felt on its way to roost after a long day hunting across
the coastal marshes.
It’s not easy to estimate how many Brent Geese were present as they shuttled in
groups between the grazing marshes and inland lagoons. These smart, black and
white geese spread across a very wide area during the day only coming together
en masse in the reserve as dusk approaches. There would certainly be several
hundred, perhaps thousands. The sound of their calls as they pass overhead is
really evocative of the wild: a true sound of Winter.
A welcome reminder of the impending Spring can now be seen as snowdrops and
crocuses come into flower in local woodland. In spite of heavy rain, raging winds
and recent snow they continue to provide a little Winter cheer. Fledgling
