TAP INTO YOUR CHILDS LEARNING STYLE FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESSAll kids are born ready to learn. But not all kids learn in the same way. One child can read something and remember it easily.Another may need to hear it. And the child who taps her pencil may actually be helping herself stay focused. So it's importantknow how your child learns best. Watch how your child tackles a new task. You will get some clues about how she learns besThat way, you can help her design a study program that builds on her strengths.

If your child is a visual learner, she learns from looking at images. A visual learner does best when she can make charts or flacards of things she needs to memorize. Drawing a picture can also help her remember important facts. If your child is anauditory learner, she takes in information through her ears. She does well in a class where the teacher presents informationverbally. You can help your auditory learner do better by encouraging her to read aloud when she studies. That way, she willactually hear the information. She can practice spelling words by saying them aloud. If your child is a physical learner, sheneeds to get her body involved. To support your physical learner, encourage her to get involved with her reading. She can actout the history lesson. She can put on a puppet show with characters from her chapter book.

FLU FACTSThe flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused byinfluenza virus that can infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness.Signs and symptoms:

    common in children than adults).

How Flu Spreads: Most experts believe that mainlydroplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze ortalk spread the flu. Less often a person might also get fluby touching a surface or object that has Flu virus on itthen touching their own mouth eyes or possibly nose.Period of Contagiousness: 1 day before symptomsdevelop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.

    SIPPING, SNACKING ANDTOOTH DECAY

Now more that ever kids are facedwith an array of food choices fromfresh produce to sugar-laden,

processed, convenience meals andsnack foods. What children eat andwhen they eat it may affect not onlytheir general health but also theiroral health. Americans are consuming foods and drinkshigh in sugar and starches more often and in largerportions than ever before. A steady diet of sugaryfoods and drinks can ruin teeth, especially among thosewho snack throughout the day.

When sugar is consumed over and over again in large, often hidden amounts, the harmful effect on teeth canbe dramatic. Sugar on teeth provides food for bacteria,

which produces acid. The acid can eat away theenamel on teeth. To reduce your childrens risk for tooth decay:

Sugary foods and drinks should be consumedwith meals. Saliva production increases duringmeals and helps to neutralize acid productionand rinse food particles from the mouth.

Limit between meal snacks, offer your childnutritious food.

If your child chews gum, make it sugarless.Chewing sugarless gum after eating canincrease saliva and help wash out food anddecay-producing acid.

Monitor Beverage consumption: Instead of soft

drinks, offer your child water and low-fat milk. Teach your child good brushing and flossing

    habits. Schedule regular dental visits.

If your child needs assistance with any dental orinsurance concerns, please contact our school nurse.Jodi Quinton [email protected]

PHONE NUMBER?Do Your Children Know Their Home PhoneNumbers?... Almost every afternoon, students come

into the office to call home, but cant do it without ourhelp because they dont know a phone number tocontact a parent or care giver. Knowing a phonenumber to contact a family member is a life skill that allour students should have. It will make them feel moreindependent, and you will feel more confident that theycan reach you in an emergency. For those too young toremember multiple numbers, we suggest that you writedown important phone numbers and have your childkeep them in his/her backpack for easy access.
