Student success rates at Bishop Auckland College are in the top 10 per cent in the country, recent figures show. The latest national league tables, published by the Skills Funding Agency for the 2012/13 academic year, show 91.1% of students achieved their qualifica- tion, placing the college at the top end of both the regional and national rankings. Success rates reflect the number of students who achieve a qualification as a percentage of those who start courses. The new performance figures follow a positive verdict at the college’s most recent Ofsted in- spection, which found the college was “relentless in its pursuit to drive up the quality of teaching and learning”, adding: “success rates have improved for nearly all students”. Natalie Davison, Principal and Chief Executive, said, “Bishop Auckland College has much to be proud of and these latest success rates demonstrate both the hard work of our students and our exceptional staff commitment. “Combined with a student satisfaction rating of 95% and a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted inspectors, the college is performing really well and we are ambitious to do even better. I would urge prospective students and their parents to consider Bishop Auckland College for vocational courses.” An open evening is being held at the college’s main Woodhouse Lane campus from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday 15th July, when prospective students can enrol on a wide range of full and part time further and higher education courses starting this September. The Skills Funding Agency 2012/13 education and training league tables by institution can be viewed at www.gov.uk/govern- ment/statistical-data-sets/ sfa-national-success-rates- tables-2012-to-2013. Sixteen students from St John’s School & Sixth Form College took the long journey to Zaragoza in Spain recently, to take part in an exchange with el Colegio Del Salvador. Upon arrival they received an early morning welcome from the host families and teachers and the students’ Spanish was put to the test!Despite taking the British weather with them, students were fortunate enough to visit and experi-ence some of Zaragoza’s most important landmarks and traditions. Some of the highlights from the trip included a visit to the Aljafería Moorish Palace, a Merengue dance class where students got their hips shaking to Shakira, and a visit to the Goya museum where they turned their own drawings into engravings.

On the penultimate day, they made a trip outside of Zaragoza to the Parque Natural del Monasterio de Piedra (Nature Park of the Stone Monastery) where they saw some beauti-ful waterfalls, met some birds of prey and picnicked together before heading back for their last day in the city.Several tears were shed on the final day when Spanish and English students met together to share their experiences, watch a slideshow of photos cap-turing some of the amazing memories from the trip, and say their goodbyes. One month later, the Spanish students landed at Newcastle Airport and the weather did not disap-point! Students spent a week exploring some of the greatest landmarks the

North East has to offer, and all in glorious sunshine. Some of the highlights included a trip to St James’ Park, Beamish Museum and Durham Cathedral. The Spanish students also ventured further afield and spent the weekend ex-ploring the beautiful Lake District.Students from el Colegio Del Salvador also had the opportunity to shadow their exchange partner and experience life as a St John’s student, includ-ing some very traditional games such as cricket and rounders. A spokesperson for the school commented, “This was an invaluable exchange which allowed students to immerse themselves in a different culture and put their knowledge of Spanish into practice in a meaning-ful context.”

Changing the boundariesDurham County Council has a responsibility to periodi-cally review the boundaries of all conservation areas to ensure that they are relevant and that the con-servation area is properly managed, protected and preserved.Following completion of the conservation area survey, suggested revised boundary changes to Bishop Auckland conser-vation areas will be on view at a series of drop-in events for local residents and businesses. This is an opportunity for the council to get views and comments before the final proposals are incorpo-rated into the conservation area appraisal. This document supports

the County Durham Plan and it is anticipated that this will be ratified prior to the end of the year. The sessions are taking place on Wednesday 2nd July at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, and on Thursday 10th July at the Four Clocks Centre on Newgate Street.Steve Bhowmick, Environ-ment and Design Manager, Durham County Council, said, “We would like to see as many as people as possible attend these drop-in sessions so all views can be taken on board before we finalise the proposals.”More information is avail-able from heritage, land-scape and design officers by contacting [email protected].

Students meet internationally acclaimed photographer

Young photographers at King James I Academy recently met award-winning international pho-tographer and author, Joe Cornish, one of the most famous commercial pho-tographers in the world. The visit was arranged by photography teacher Mrs Mulryan as part of

students' studies into landscape photography, in which they have been looking at Joe’s work for inspiration. During a full day of pho-tography-based activities, students in Years 10 and 12 visited the Joe Cornish Gallery in Northallerton, which holds a permanent

exhibition of the artist’s work, as well as his print archive. There they met the man himself for a fascinat-ing talk on how and why he chose photography as a career, his favourite locations and his tips for achieving unique and evoc-ative landscape images.

Sunderland Supporters AGM

St Mary’s Under 12s’ new Angels team played their first game on Saturday 21st June, giving a great account of themselves with a loss and a win. They lost to last year’s cup winners Plains Farm in the first game, with Chloe Wymer scoring and goal-keeper Hayle Cooke earning player-of-the-match. The girls then played Wash-

ington Juniors in the second game and won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Shelbee Micka-lauski. Chloe Wymer was player-of-the-match.The Under 15 Angels took part in a great money raising event, with three of the girls; Sam Moody, Erin Kelly and Heidi Coulthard taking part in the Tesco Challenge 180ft Bungee Jump, along with coach Mark Munroe,

and raised over £1,000 in sponsorship. This boosts the funds for the Barcelona Junior Cup com-petition next year, which they hope to take part in. The club is holding their annual club awards night on Thursday 3rd July at St. John’s R.C. School, and all parents, team players, coaches, managers, and of-ficials are invited.

On Saturday 14th June, Bishop Auckland GC trav-elled to Newcastle (West-erhope GC) in the 5th Round of the Team Mail on Sunday Classic Compe-tition. The day was fine with bright sunshine and little wind. All five matches were initially tight affairs with very little given from either side, however the strength in depth of the Bishop Auckland Golf Team proved the key factor and all five ran out comfort-able winners in the end. The first to complete their match was Wayne Hewitt, who won after playing solid golf 6 & 5.Paul King then won his match after being 4 down.

He stuck to his task and finally won on the 18th after a great fight back.Andrew Graham looked in control throughout his match and indeed went on to win 2 up.Chris Thompson followed suit, winning his indi-vidual battle 2 up, but man-of-the-match was Jamie Birkbeck, ultimately winning 3 & 2, but on his way he carded 6 birdies and an eagle. A further fantastic effort by all the players. The team will now play at home to Ryton GC at a date to be fixed. “Once again a big thank you to all the team sup-porters” said a spokesper-son.
