Upcoming Trips

In the early 1970s, and around 20 years later in November 1992, two time capsules were found in houses in New Shildon. Inside them were letters written by Margaret Anna Young, who was born in October 1841. The first letter detailed

life and conditions in the 1800s and was found in the chimney breast of Hack-worth Lodge, which was thought to be one of two little cottages at the west end of Soho Street. It was sealed in a stone mineral-water bottle belonging to Shafto Mineral Waters of

Durham, and was dated July 2nd, 1858. The second letter was found in a glass bottle sealed into the walls of Blyford House in Victoria Street, which was built by Margaret’s family in 1864; the year she wrote the second letter.To celebrate the 150 year anniversary of the ‘hidden treasure’, teachers at St John’s Primary School, Andrew Kay and Lisa Turnbull, thought it would be a good idea for Year 5 pupils to make their own time capsule. The 28 youngsters each wrote a letter to go inside and drew a self portrait. Also included was dolls clothing, all of the coins used today, from 1p up to £2, current shop receipts, a copy of the Northern Echo and two copies of the Shildon Town Crier. The final item placed inside was a letter written by teacher Andrew Kay. The capsule was placed underground on Friday 20th June, and Mr Kay said, “Today we are making history. You never know, in a hundred years time people could find our capsule and be amazed at how we lived”.

The Busy Bees fundraising group were buzzing again last weekend, when they made a grand total of £700 at their beer garden sale in The Three Tuns. The money was raised through stalls, a brantub, a raffle and a donation from a ‘lovely lady’. Raffle prize winners will be contacted this week, however the ladies hold no contact details for the owners of pink ticket 61 - 65 (G. Jefferson) and white ticket 671 - 675 (A. Rob-

ertson). Home Group, the UK’s fourth largest provider of affordable housing, added their support to Shildon Alive! this week. Determined to demon-strate their commitment to this popular local project, staff from the associa-tion went along and got involved in several aspects of the initiative. Working in partnership with Morrisons, the staff

organised a bag pack and food collection in the local Shildon store. Raising a little over £116 for Shildon Alive!, the volunteers also saw two wheelie bins filled with donated food for the foodbank. Paula Nelson, the project’s Community worker com-mented, “These Home Group guys are fantastic, giving up their spare time to see Shildon flourish is

a huge encouragement to us all, thank you Home Group.”The foodbank is part of the Shildon Alive! project, with people in need referred from local surgeries and schools, among others. To donate food and household essentials, the wheelie bin remains in Morrisons, or you can call into the hub at 19 Church Street to find out more.

‘Hungry Eyes’ and ‘She's Like The Wind’ are just two of the many song and dance tunes that are in The Teara-ways Youth Theatre Group’s forthcoming production of Dirty Dancing, which will be performed in the first week of July at the Civic Hall, Shildon.A spokeperson for the group said, “The young people are into final rehearsals for this show, and although it hasn't been an easy one to do, they have put in a lot of hard work and extra hours to accomplish it.“They have kept to the movie story that everyone knows, with just a few ad-ditions of their own.“Now all they need is an audience to perform it to.”

Performances take place from Thursday 3rd July to Saturday 5th July at 7.30pm, with an afternoon show on Sunday 6th July at 2pm. As part of their 100th Birthday Challenge, eleven Brownies from 4th Shildon St. John’s helped out at Finchale College’s Garden

Party recently, serving tea and cakes, clearing tables and helping to entertain other children. All the youngsters received

Drawing connections to brass

A railway map representing the brass band movement in County Durham has been unveiled as part of Brass: Durham International Festival 2014.The piece, at Locomo-tion – The National Railway Museum at Shildon, and also Durham Railway Station, is the first perma-nent artwork to be com-missioned by the Durham County Council festival as part of its BRASS:Pitch arts programme.Entitled Connections, it has been created by John and Karen Topping and features a map of the pre-Beeching railway network etched on to a brass plate.Railway stations are replaced with QR codes that, when scanned with a smartphone, direct the user to digital media content showing 22 modern-day brass bands rehearsing in rooms across County Durham.Connections is one of four BRASS:Pitch commissions for this year’s Brass Durham International Festival.

Colin Robson, Durham County Council arts officer, said, “BRASS:Pitch aims to challenge the percep-tions and understanding of brass music, either through exploring its historical and contemporary contexts or expanding the boundaries of the genre through the creation of new forms of music production.“These creative collabora-tions have produced some delightfully unusual and engaging works that are sure to capture the imagi-nation of County Durham audiences. We are particu-larly pleased to see our first permanent BRASS:Pitch installation.”This year’s three tempo-rary works include Cycles of Brass by Attaya Projects at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery.The piece, which opens on Saturday 28th June, features two brass cornets suspended in separate water tanks and exposed to opposing transformative chemical reactions; one progressively decaying and

the other being progres-sively restored.These processes are trans-lated into an abstract soundscape with inter-active sound process-ing software modifying samples of brass sounds based on monitoring data.Meanwhile, a 360° film installation at The Music School in Palace Green will invite viewers to reflect on the bonds that link youth culture with tradition and North East communities with the rest of the world.The installation runs from Friday 11th July to Sunday, 20th July.The final BRASS:Pitch com-mission for 2014 is Electro-Brass, a collaboration between Manchester-based composers Caro C and Eve Harrison. Electro-Brass is part of a double bill with Jon Kefala-Kerr’s Steam-song at Gala Theatre on Saturday 12th and Sunday, 13th July.For more information on BRASS:Pitch and this year’s commissions, visit www.brassfestival.co.uk.

A Macmillan Big Night Out was held at the Locomotive Pub in Shildon on Saturday 21st June, in memory of the landlady’s mum Beth Ford and pub regular, ‘Geordie’ John. The event raised an amazing £460 by way of raffles, domino cards, bingo and a cake auction.A spokesperson for the event

commented, “We would like to thank local businesses who donated cash and prizes, with special thanks for the beautiful Swarovski crystal necklace, which was donated by a local family who have emigrated to Aus-tralia.“Also, a huge thank you to all who made donations and attended the event.”

As Shildon Alive’s ‘Guerrilla Gardening’ continues to go from strength to strength, this week saw the Children of Saint John’s CofE (Aided) school bringing tears to the eyes of Shildon residents.Following the successful planting around the town and in Hackworth Park by Sunnydale School and Timothy Hackworth, the children of Saint John’s decided to come up with something different. Spending Wednesday morning filling and planting large flower pots, the af-ternoon was taken up dis-

tributing them around the local community. Elderly local residents answered a knock at their door to find groups of children, flower filled pot in hand, offering to place one in front of each home. The delight on the faces of the recipients was matched by the joy in the faces of the children as they set down their loads. Revd David commented that one local resident summed it up well when she said simply, “Aren’t the children of Shildon just amazing”.

Path links rail past with the future

The past and the future have come together with work starting on a new public path linking Shildon and Newton Aycliffe.The route comes full circle as it traces the route of the former Stockton and Darlington railway line and ends up on the doorstep of Hitachi, who are bringing rail building back to County Durham with plans for a £82m train factory provid-ing 730 jobs.Work began at the Aycliffe end of the path on Friday 20th June, although the Shildon end is already complete as far as Mid-dridge Quarry.When it opened in 1825, the original line was the first public railway to bring together passenger and goods traffic and steam lo-comotives.Now the route will provide a new two-mile path for pe-destrians, cyclists, horse-riders, mobility scooters and families with push chairs. It will be a three-metre-wide tarmacked path which will be low mainte-nance.The route comes alongside other path improvements to the existing network to create a more comprehen-

sive network for walkers and cyclists.Cllr Neil Foster, Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said, “It is fitting this important corridor is brought right up to date at a time when there is major rail invest-ment in the county. It will be a link not only between the two towns but also with the past and future. The path will also make active travel a viable and sus-tainable option to getting to school, work and other services.”Durham County Council has been working closely with the landowners Network Rail and has provided £350,000 funding. A further £300,000 has come from the government via Sustrans Links to Communites Fund.The path comes within the Local Motion campaign area, backed by Durham County Council, to promote sustainable transport and healthy lifestyles through-out south Durham. The Stockton and Darling-ton Railway operated in north-east England from 1825 to 1863 and the first line connected collieries near Shildon with Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington.

The movement of coal to ships rapidly became a lucrative business and the line was soon extended to a new port and town at Mid-dlesbrough.Stephen Hind, route en-hancements manager at Network Rail said, “We’re pleased to be supporting this project which touches on railway history, and will provide a great new pathway for cyclists and pedestrians alike. “As part of this project, we have installed a new fence, to help make sure people who use the new path and the railway are kept safely apart.” In a separate but linked project, the current footpath next to the BR Sports Field, leading to Shildon Railway Station, is to be upgraded and a cycle path added. The existing Sports Field fence is to be taken down and moved 2 meters back, with a strip of the adjoining land being used for the cycle track. Work is due to start in Sep-tember. It will mean that there will be a footpath and cycle path the entire distance between Shildon Bus Station and Newton Aycliffe.

Award winning train available in miniature for first time

Railway modellers visiting Locomotion met with teams from Rapido Trains Inc. (Ontario, Canada) and Locomotion at a 3D Scan Railway Party on 24th June, to find out more about the creation and manufacture of a new 00 gauge model train based on the award winning Advanced Passen-ger Train Experimental, one of the National Railway Museum’s very own historic exhibits. The APT was an experi-mental tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s. The APT-E (Advanced Passenger Train Experimental) that can be seen on display in Shildon today was a prototype. When its period of testing was complete in June 1976, APT-E was sent to the National Railway Museum in York for preservation before being moved to the National Railway Museum in Shildon in 2004. It has been one of the star at-tractions at Locomotion since the museum opened

Pupils at Timothy Hack-worth Primary School have been taking part in a wide range of activities to help them stay fit and healthy. Activities have included dance, gymnastics, tennis, golf, judo, athlet-ics and cycling. Rio, the school’s ‘Bike It’ Officer, is a regular visitor

to Timothy Hackworth, and he helps the children to keep their cycles in safe working order. Recently he has, along with school staff, accompanied groups of children on cycling days to Hamsterley Forest. “Everyone enjoyed the cycling despite, on some occasions, the rain,” said a spokesperson.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides had a busy and eventful weekend playing Durham Cricket League fixtures on both Saturday and Sunday, with mixed results. At the Sportsfield on Saturday the 1st XI enter-tained Ushaw Moor, who were without their profes-sional Billy Teesedale Jnr.Things looked to be going well for the Railwaymen but injuries to both main strike bowlers Bret Upton and Phil Garbutt left the attack weakened. Still, at 84 for 8, Shildon should have wrapped up the visitors’ innings but instead allowed a ninth wicket un-defeated partnership take them to 189 for 8, in 55 overs. With the match due to finish

at 7.30pm, Shidon were never going to face the 45 overs maximum allowed and they should have settled for the draw but several batsmen played needless aggressive shots to get out and the side slumped to a 97 run defeat. In an exciting encounter at Ushaw Moor, the 2nd team lost by 1 run, as Matty Sum-merbell (37) and Del Owen (55) took the side to the brink of victory, only to fall at the final hurdle, being all out for 141. On Sunday, the 1st team proved that they had learnt a huge lesson from the previous day’s game, when having hosts Peterlee at 98 for 8, they clinically killed off the innings and bowled out the opposition for 112. In reply, skipper Greg

Upton’s 42, led Shildon to an emphatic seven wicket win. The 2nd team enjoyed the taste of victory too, as they defeated Peterlee at home by 20 runs. Despite only Ben Trotter (39) proving his worth with the bat and posting a moderate total of 116 all out, Shildon came back strongly and man of the moment, “Delboy” Owen proved his all round worth, taking 5 for 28. This Friday sees the first of the F15 Tournament Group 3 matches, when Shildon Locos, the boys in pink, visit Tudhoe. On Saturday, Silksworth are the visitors to the Sportsfield, in the 1st team fixture, whilst the 2nd team visit the former Colliery side.

The next meeting of the Shildon AFC Supporters’ Club is on Sunday 6th July, from 11.30am in the club-house. New members are more than welcome to join.

Three local County Coun-cillors, Henry Nicholson and Trish Pemberton from Shildon and Eddy Adam from Aycliffe West, have got together and pur-chased bowls equipment for Shildon Bowls Club, which will be used by Inno-vations at Shildon Leisure Centre. The £1,000 contribution, from the councillors’ Members Initiative Fund, has enabled the Centre

to purchase seven sets of bowls. Innovations, which provides intensive support for people with disabili-ties, have been attending the Leisure Centre for around two years, with around 20 people playing bowls every Wednesday morning.Alan Ingledew, from Shildon Indoor Bowls Club, said, “I would like to thank the three councillors for

their kind donation which will help the people from Innovations, as the new bowls are slightly smaller and easier to handle”. Shildon Indoor Bowls Club is looking for new members, young or old, to join them during the winter months at the Leisure Centre.
