Ruxer was Big East Freshman of the Year in 2012 and was named Second Team All America in 2014. Ruxer went 3-2 with a dazzling 1.44 ERA in 18 games and eight starts in the Midwest League before turning in a 5.18 ERA in 11 California League starts. He was then traded to Kansas City on December 1 in exchange for former Blue Rocks Brooks Pounders. Ruxer started the season with Wilmington in the bullpen and got a cup of coffee in Double-A Northwest Arkansas. He makes his ninth start of the season this morning, and has allowed one run or less in four of his first eight turns in the rotation. Chase Vallot slugged a walk-off home run in the continuation of Monday’s suspended game to give the Rocks a 3-1 victory, while five different Blue Rock hitters contributed RBIs in a come from behind 6-4 win in the nightcap. The Wilmington bullpen was lights out once again, giving up just one hit and no runs in 8.1 innings of work over the two games. The pair of wins pull the Rocks within three games of first-place in the Carolina League Northern Division second half standings. FAST STARTERS: The Rocks have started most games off on the right foot in July. In the 23 games played during the month, the Blue Crew has deliver first inning runs in 14 of those contests. In the second game on Tuesday, Wilmington struck for three runs in the opening frame on RBI hits from Wander Franco, Brandon Downes, and Colton Frabasilio. Overall, the Rocks have tallied 66 runs in the first inning, 10 more tallies than any other frame. On the flip end, the 10th inning two-run home run by Chase Vallot dur- ing the continuation of Monday’s suspended game marked the first time the Rocks have scored in the 10th inning this season. The Rocks have tallied eight runs in extra innings, giving them a 6-5 record in those games. WALKING TALL: The Rocks walked-off a winner once again in the continuation of Monday’s game, although this one was unique. Chase Vallot’s 10th-inning long ball was the first walk-off home run for the Blue Rocks since July 1, 2014. Ironically, on that date, Ryan Dent slugged a two-run shot to give the Rocks a 7-5 victory over the Salem Red Sox. On the season, the Rocks have walked-off eight times, and Tuesday’s game marked the fifth occurrence in July. The eight walk-off wins are the franchise’s most since at least 2009. THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Blue Rocks’ season series with Salem has been dominated by the home team this season. The teams are 10-10 against each other this year, but the home team has won 15 of the 20 meetings between the teams. The Rocks are 9-4 against the Sox Frawley Stadium, but have dropped six of their seven games in Salem. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 38 one-run games so far in 2017. No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 32 single-score affairs. Incredibly for Wilmington, the Rocks are now 21-17 in such con- tests thanks to having won 17 of their last 21. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: “I have to credit the pitching (in the continuation of Monday’s suspended game). Luis Rico pitched three innings and was absolutely perfect. Then Jacob Bodner pitched the last inning. We got four innings out of our bullpen and we didn’t give up a hit. That’s the key and it sets it up for somebody to be the hero. Chase Vallot was the hero, hitting the walk-off home run which was huge. Anytime you get a walk-off home run, it’s very exciting...I thought (Jace Vines) was good (on Tuesday). It was nerves obviously in the first inning. He walked two and then they got the triple, got an early lead on us. I think it was more nerves then anything, but he really settled in, got his sinker going. He has a very good sinker and this was the first time we have seen him. He settled down and did a very nice job. The pitch count got him (92 pitches), but I liked what I saw and am very encouraged by what I saw... Walker Sheller did an outstanding job, had to come in with the bases loaded and two- outs (in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game). He got out of that, left three stranded, and gave us two more innings. Grant Gavin went two innings and gave up no hits, had a hiccup in the last inning with a couple walks but he was still throwing well. Once again, the bullpen allowed us offensively to scratch a couple here and there....The bullpen had eight and a third innings of no runs and that is outstanding...(On offensive difference between Salem series and Frederick series so far has been) better at-bats, putting the ball in play, not trying to do too much. We got a couple base hits the other way; Brandon Downes shot one the other way, Wander Franco shot one the other way, stayed on the ball, those types of things. We aren’t trying to pull and get pull happy, trying to take what they give you. Matthew Kent (Salem) is a very good pitcher, we did a nice job of com- ing back from a 4-0 lead and making it a 4-3 game. Lots of it was patience, taking what they give us and not trying to do too much...Hopefully you are always better at home. Everyone is usually better at home. It’s just your surroundings, your comfort, your own locker room, guys being comfortable where they are living, all those things come into play. We do play very well (at Frawley) which is a good sign, but I don’t know why (Potomac and Salem struggle when visiting Wilmington). I think everyone is familiar with everyone. You play them a lot and we have had good success against them. Mainly, to me, we have pitched extremely well against Salem.”

The Salem Scoop

The Salem Red Sox are coming off one of their best season’s in franchise history a year ago. However, having the best overall record in the Carolina League and a prospect-laden roster wasn’t enough. The Red Sox finished 2016 with an impressive 87-52 record and won the first half of the Souther Division with a 43-26 record. Salem took on Myrtle Beach and was ousted in the semifinals in three games.

This year, the Red Sox are managed by second-year skipper Joe Oliver who returns after his successful first year. Like Wilmington’s skipper in Jamie Quirk, Oliver was a catcher and was drafted in the 1983 MLB Draft in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Reds team that defeated the powerful Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series. He went on to spend 13 seasons in the big with the Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Mariners, Pirates, Yankees and Red Sox. He played in nearly 1,100 games and posted a .247 batting average to go along with 102 homers and 476 RBI. After a 13-year hiatus from baseball, Oliver returned and became the manager of the Lowell Spinners in 2014. He spent two years with the Short-Season Class A affiliate and led the team to a composite 74-77 record. He was then promote to Salem in 2016.

The 2017 Salem squad has a handful of Boston’s top prospects. 19-year-old Roniel Raudes is the highest ranked prospect on the team, tabbed as the sixth-best prospect in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2016 and posted an 11-6 record with a solid 3.65 ERA in 24 starts in Low-A Greenville.

Offensively, the Sox have Josh Ockimey at first base. The slugging first baseman clubbed 18 home runs which was second-most on the farm while pacing the South Atlantic League in walks (88). He paced Greenville’s offense in multiple offensive categories including home runs, walks, games played and doubles. He enters the season as the No. 10 prospect.

Other prospects that have received attention by Baseball America that will be featured in Salem in 2017 is Gerson Bautista who has the best fastball in the system. Bautista spent time with the Lowell Spinners a year ago and averaged a strikeout per inning. Behind the plate, Austin Rei is considered to be the best defensive catching prospect and gunned nearly 40% of would-be-base-stealers in Greenville last year.

Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny makes the jump from Low-A Greenville after hitting a respectable .277 in 105 games which earned him a selection on the South Atlantic All-Star team. Tate was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2015 out of Missouri State.

Along with the top prospects, Salem has 14 returners in 2017. Familiar faces for the Blue Crew are Matt Kent who etched his name in the Salem record books as the lefty tossed 156 innings last year which led the Carolina League and also set a new, single-season high.

With the addition to Buies Creek and Down East, Salem has shifted to the Northern Division after playing in the Southern Division. Last season, the Blue Rocks and Red Sox battled 20 times in inter-division play with Salem taking the head-to-head match up 13-7.

The Rocks and Red Sox continue to see a lot of each other as of late. The two teams ended the first half with a four-game series at Frawley Stadium in which the Rocks swept and eliminated the Red Sox from playoff conten-tion. The Rocks have won back-to-back games and have evened the head-to-head series at 10-10. With the pair of wins, the Blue Rocks move within three games of Salem for first place in the Northern Divison.

THE BOOK ON JARED RUXER: Originally selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 29th round of the 2011 Draft, Jared Ruxer passed on the Tribe and instead decided to play college ball at Louisville. Ruxer was Big East Freshman of the Year in 2012 and was named Second Team All America in 2014. He went 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 13 starts and 75.1 innings pitched as a junior before an elbow injury ended his season. Despite the bad break Ruxer was still drafted by the Angels in the 12th round that June. The India-napolis, Indiana native made his pro debut in 2015 before splitting the 2016 campaign between Low-A and Advanced-A. He makes his tenth start of the season this morning, and has allowed one run or less in four of his first nine turns in the rotation.

REACTION TO THE TRADE: Anytime a player is traded it can be jarring to their system. One day you’re going about your routine and the next day your world has been turned upside down. That certainly rang true for Ruxer this past December. “It’s definitely different and it all happened so fast,” Ruxer said. “The biggest differ-ence is you get real close with people in one organization and then suddenly you are in a new organization where you don’t know anyone. But it’s been a good experience, there are great people here, I’ve gotten to know them and I really like everyone. It’s just a new opportunity and feeling that they must want me here. I was happy with that and I understand the business side of it completely. It’s been a good experience all around.” As smooth as the transition has been, nothing so new can be completely without adjustment. “The biggest challenge has been getting a feel for the rules and the way they do things here. It’s a little different. Nothing big though, I think pro-fessional baseball is professional baseball so it’s all relatively similar, but it’s not exactly the same.”

ADJUSTING TO LIFE AS A PRO: Everyone knows pitching is hard, but at the professional level the margin for error shrinks to become virtually non-existent. For Ruxer that lesson has been learned, but not without some bruises along the way. “The mental side of being really focused out there every single day is the biggest key for me out there,” Ruxer says. “You loose that focus for one pitch and that’s when you can get burnt. You can give up a home run if you just let up a little or you miss a little and that can do you in. I would say just being locked in, razor focus on your target and focusing with high intent while throwing as hard as you can towards your target on every single pitch is the most critical and challenging thing.” Ruxer thinks it isn’t so much the drain of a long season as much as it’s the battle to not let your mind get comfortable and drift for even a moment. “It is such a long season that it’s easy to loose sight on how important every single pitch is. You might loose focus on one pitch and you just need to tell yourself every pitch is just an important as the last one. Just pitch like the game is on the line every time. I never did that before pro ball and it’s easier said than done, but I’m getting it.”

ON HIS PITCH REPERTOIRE: “I’m really happy how my slider is coming along and my breaking stuff. My changeup isn’t where I want it to be. Last year that was my go to pitch and it was a swing and miss pitch for me. I think throwing it out of the pen as a reliever, it’s been tougher to get a feel for it. If I can just throw that more and get comfortable with it I think that will be huge for me, especially against lefties.”

ON STARTING VS. RELIEVING: “I think just the routine is the biggest difference. On the mound I don’t think it’s any different. The mentality is no different, it’s just everything in between outings and leading up to it. As a starter, everything is scheduled out for you and you know what you are going to do most of the time. As a reliever, you have to be thinking, ‘am I going to be pitching this day or this day and how can I prepare myself for the day I think I’m going to pitch.’ “I like all the preparation of the starter like being able to get your lift-ing in and going through that stuff. It’s definitely fun being in the bullpen with all the guys during games and being able to talk with relievers about how they pitch guys, the different pitches they throw, and just learning from your teammates. I think you get a better opportunity to do that as a reliever just being around so many of the guys during the game.”

That’s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I’m out...It took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn’t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That’s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I’m out.... I know Brandon Phillips doesn’t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well.”

They said it: “I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements ... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There’s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn’t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There’s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There’s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here.”

2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League)-Hit .261 with nine home runs and 50 RBI in 60 games. Led the team in both HR and was ranked second in the league in RBI.

They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season)“Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren’t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...Just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That’s everyone’s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible....I actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I’m super excited. It’s a great group of guys here...I loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(On transition from catcher to first base.)...I absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body... Absolutely not, I’ve never done that before (on hitting for the cycle). I was just super happy to get the win and happy to contribute. (If cycle was in his mind after the triple) A little bit, but not much. I know (triples) are incredibly hard to get and I’m not a big triples guy. I was just happy to get it done early and didn’t have to worry about it. I’m mostly happy we got the win.”

2015: Spent the season with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) Wilmington Blue Rocks. -Hit .251 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI in 106 games with Lexington. -Ranked second on team in doubles, home runs and RBI for Lexington. -Played in just one game in Wilmington and in his lone at-bat struck out.-Fell a home run shy of the cycle on 5/15. (5-for-5 3 2B, 3B, RBI)

2014: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit .308 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 41 games. Finished fifth on the team with 13 doubles.

They said it: “I definitely think it will be a good adjustment for me. I went through the whole first year struggling a little bit. I know the stadiums, the teams, maybe some of the same players are coming back. I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on other guys in the league. I’m excited....Honestly I went in there carefree. If I get out, it’s supposed to happen because I’m the guy from A-Ball so I took it the right way. I just went out there and felt com-fortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that’s the way I should play here too which is what I’m going to try to do. It was enjoyable.... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans…I’m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it’s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It’s a whole dif-ferent atmosphere. There’s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome....It’s defi-nitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There’s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven’t gotten that much in my career so far. It’s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.”

2017 Notes: Collected his third, three-hit game of the season on 7/17 vs. POT. Had three all of last season, six total in his career. -Had career-high ten-game hitting streak snapped on 6/9 vs. BC.-Picked up his first multi-hit game of the season while throwing out a pair of base runners on 4/18 @ SAL.-Collected first multi-RBI game of the season on 4/30 @ BC-Leads team in caught stealing percentage (35%).

2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit .317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games.-Did not commit and error behind the dish. (250 innings)-Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers.

2015 Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit .250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate.

They said it: “I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that’s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that’s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn’t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don’t think it would’ve been as successful as a game... I think that’s the reason why I’m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that’s what I pride myself on the most... I don’t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn’t a big stocky dude because I’m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long.”

They said it: “It was a huge, huge jump. The long season and bus rides. In college, our travel was much less, the bus rides weren’t nearly as long and we didn’t play nearly as many games. I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I’m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I’m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year ...On going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band play-ing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes....It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally...For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself...There’s no one specific player for me personally. I’m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they’re can’t miss TV. Watching Miguel Cabrera when I grew up as a Detroit fan and watching him on a daily basis during his Triple Crown season was unbelievable.”

In 2016, he set the school’s single-season record with 35 stolen bases in 42 attempts (83.3 percent) and ranks third in school histo-ry with 75 steals. Also led the team with 43 runs and recorded a career-high 27 RBI, earning All-Southland Conference Third-Team honors.

2017 Notes: Hit walk-off RBI single on 7/13 vs. LYN in bottom of 9th inning to give WIL 6-5 win. -Hit first-career Class-A Adv. homer on 7/6 @LYN. -Started the season with Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League)-Played in only two games with Legends before suffering a hamstring injury. -Went 2-for-5 in small sample size with Lexington-Played in four games in Arizona Rookie League before being added to Wilmington. -Has 13 stolen bases in just 29 total games this year. (9 SB in 24 games with WIL)

2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League).-Put together a solid pro debut season, hitting .291 with eight doubles, four triples, a pair of homers and drove in 28 runs. -Stole 36 bags which led the Pioneer League and were ten more than anyone else in the league. He finished with the third most stolen bases of any farmhand in the Royals system.

They said it: (On joining Wilmington) I’m getting to see a lot of guys I hung out with during spring train-ing. (I’m just) coming up here and adjusting to High-A ball, figuring out how everything works out here, the system they have going and being able to fit in...(On injury earlier in the season) I got hurt in (Low-A) Lexington, pulled my hamstring. I went down to Arizona (Rookie League) for a while, rehabbed it. I took that rehab processes really seriously so I could get back on the field. I thought I would end up going back to Lexington to keep on playing, but they ended up asking me to come up (to Wilmington) and hop in the lineup. Like I said, I took that rehab process pretty seriously. I guess leg injuries aren’t too much to mess around with and I want to be able to stay on the field and try to contribute to the team....I had Tommy John surgery, but that was back in college. In my professional career, the (hamstring injury) was the first injury I’ve had. My first leg injury as well, so it was kind of new to me; the steps, the process to get through it. A little bit of prayer and a little bit of work with our trainers, I’m able to get back on the field. (On seeing familiar faces with the Rocks) I think it makes that transition to a different level of ball easier. You are not so in awe of everything that is going on. You are realizing you are really cool with the guys that are around you and you fit in with them so it makes that transition easier, a lot more fun and less hectic....I think what led to the success (with Idaho Falls) was me buying into the process that these guys told me to buy into when they first drafted me. It was kind of new to me how they did everything around here. The offseason and prepping myself before games, staying up the middle and being able to go the other way, not necessarily pull the ball so much, just try to get myself on base, let my legs work and do what it can for the team. I think that helped me out a lot. It took a lot of stress and pressure off of me at the plate.”

I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn’t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip.”...(On getting back in the box): “It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it’s fine.”... “Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I’d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.”... “From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it’s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.”... “I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I’m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.”
