THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs make the trek to New York on Saturday for a nationally-televised contest with major postseason ramifications for both clubs. Kansas City is 0-5 all-time in regular season play against New York at Giants Stadium, but there’s no time better than the present for Kansas City to register its first-ever road victory against the Giants. The Chiefs enter the game needing to get back on the winning track after suffering a tough 31-28 loss at Dallas (12/11). Kansas City (8-5) is one of four teams vying for two AFC Wild Card spots along with Jacksonville (9-4), San Diego (8-5) and Pittsburgh (8-5). New York (9-4) is coming off a 26-23 OT victory at Philadelphia (12/11). Although the Giants have never lost to the Chiefs at home, Kansas City did taste victory in its last regular season visit to the Meadowlands, registering a 29-25 win at the N.Y. Jets (10/6/02). Dick Vermeil also owns plenty of good sideline karma against the Giants, owning more wins (13) against them than any other NFL team. QB Trent Green triggers KC’s league-leading offense (380.9 ypg) that has registered 400+ yards in four consecutive games, the second- longest streak in team history, while RB Larry Johnson powers a rushing attack that ranks fourth in the league (142.2 ypg). Johnson owns a franchise-record streak of six straight 100-yard rushing games and leads the NFL since November 1st in rushing yards (852), rushing ypg (142.0), yards per rush (5.0) and yards from scrimmage (1,042). Defensively, the Chiefs have held eight opponents to 21 points or less with KC owning a 7-1 record in those contests. KC is sixth in the NFL in rushing defense (94.6 ypg), a figure that is on pace to be the third-lowest average in a 16-game season in team history. The Chiefs haven’t allowed a 100-yard back in 20 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. KC’s late-season gauntlet doesn’t get any easier when the Chiefs conclude the regular season at Arrowhead with pivotal AFC showdowns vs. San Diego (12/24) and Cincinnati (1/1). THE SERIES Kansas City owns a 2-8 (.200) record in regular season play vs. the Giants. The Chiefs are 1-2 in preseason play vs. the Giants, giving KC a 3-10 overall mark against New York. Kansas City’s initial meeting of any kind with the Giants came in the ’72 Hall of Fame Game (7/29/72) when the Chiefs defeated New York by a 23-17 margin in Canton, Ohio. The last preseason meeting between the two squads resulted in a 34-23 Giants win at the Meadowlands (8/13/04). The Chiefs have never defeated New York on the road, owning an 0-5 mark in regular season play against the Giants at Giants Stadium. Kansas City’s most recent regular season trip to the Meadowlands to face the Giants was a 28-7 loss (12/20/98). That game got off to an ominous start when S Percy Ellsworth returned an interception for a 43- yard TD as New York scored the contest’s first 28 points. Kansas City is 2-3 in regular season play vs. the Giants at Arrowhead. The Giants received a standing ovation when they were introduced in their most recent trip to Arrowhead, a contest that marked the NFL’s return to play following the tragic events of September 11th. The Giants won that contest by a 13-3 count (9/23/01). Kansas City’s most recent victory against the Giants was a 20-17 overtime thriller at Arrowhead (9/10/95). That victory initiated a string of three consecutive home OT victories for Kansas City to start the ’95 campaign. QB Steve Bono rallied KC from a 17-3 fourth-quarter deficit and tied the score at 17-17 with a three-yard TD pass to WR Danan Hughes with 1:22 remaining. K Lin Elliott’s 23-yard FG in OT made the final count 20-17 in favor of the Chiefs. “THE MIRACLE OF THE MEADOWLANDS”

Of Dick Vermeil’s 13 career victories against New York’s NFC franchise, clearly the most infamous for Giants fans is “The Miracle of the Meadowlands.” With the Giants leading 17-12 with 0:31 remaining in the contest, Giants QB Joe Pisarcik fumbled a handoff attempt as New York tried to run out the clock. The ball was scooped up by CB Herman Edwards (current N.Y. Jets head coach) for a 26-yard TD to give Philadelphia a 19-17 win (11/19/78). That game was part of a late-season, four-game winning streak for the Eagles. Philadelphia would go on to defeat the Giants by a 20-3 count at Veterans Stadium (12/17/78), giving the Eagles a 9-7 record on the season and propelling Philadelphia to its first playoff berth in 18 seasons.

KANSAS CITY AWARDED A FUTURE SUPER BOWL The Super Bowl is coming to Kansas City! On November 16th, NFL

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced that NFL owners had passed a proposal to bring the NFL’s championship game to Kansas City in a year between 2012 and 2021. The actual date will be at the discretion of the National Football League. The announcement was made at the fall session of the league’s annual meeting in Kansas City.

The awarding of the Super Bowl was contingent on two key elements according to Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt. Arrowhead Stadium, which opened in ’72 is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. Arrowhead must be renovated, including a climate-controlling “Rolling Roof” structure. The awarding of a Super Bowl would also require the city and the team to meet all the bid specifications laid out by the league.

A renovated Arrowhead will feature the largest seating capacity of any modern Super Bowl site and “the state-of-the-art Rolling Roof is unprecedented by the league and the roof structure will be an icon for Kansas City and the entire National Football League,” Hunt said.

“I think it’s a tribute to Lamar Hunt and a tribute, as the Commissioner said, to all of the owners who have visited Arrowhead over the last 30 years and specifically over the last 15, and the support this community has given the Chiefs,” added Chiefs President Carl Peterson.

KC QB TRENT GREEN A MODEL OF CONSISTENCY Since coming to Kansas City in 2001, Chiefs QB Trent Green has

started 77 consecutive games, the fourth-longest active QB starting streak in the NFL behind only Brett Favre, GB (218), Peyton Manning, IND (125) and Aaron Brooks, NO (81 prior to MNF). Since the start of the 2001 campaign, only Manning (20,445) owns more passing yards than Green (19,390). Over that same timeframe, only Manning (32), Favre (28) and Tom Brady (28) own more 100.0-rating games (minimum 20 pass attempts) than Green (25). Here’s a look at where Green stacks up in those areas since the start of the 2001 campaign . . . Born in Waterloo, N.Y. on August 31, 1946, Coughlin began his NFL coaching career as wide receivers coach for Philadelphia from ’84-85. He also spent tenures in that same capacity with Green Bay (’86-87) and the N.Y. Giants (’88-90) before serving three seasons (’91-93) as the head coach at Boston College where he compiled a 21-12-1 record.

A three-year letterwinner at wingback for Syracuse (’65-67), Coughlin broke the school’s single-season pass receiving record in ’67 playing alongside RBs Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams (’69, ‘71-73) serving as the team’s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia (’76-82), he compiled a 54-47 record. In ’78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the ’80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV.

Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons (’97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in ’99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford (’65-68) and UCLA (’70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from ’74-75. In ’75, he led UCLA to a 23-10 victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Chiefs on Pace For KC’s Best Run Defense Since ’97, Turnovers Will Be Key vs. Giants by Pete Moris

KC Seeks to Continue Its Strong Play vs. NFC Opponents KC owns a 27-17 (.614) record against NFC opponents dating back to

’95, the league’s fourth-best mark over that span. The Giants are just one of four NFC squads (PHI, TB and SF) that own a current two-game winning streak against the Chiefs. The Giants were also the last NFC squad to win three straight vs. KC (’84, ’88, ’92). The Chiefs have produced a 13-6 (.684) record during the month of December under Dick Vermeil, a record that is tied for fourth in the NFL since 2001.

The Giants are 6-1 at home this season with their lone loss coming by a 24-21 count vs. Minnesota (11/13). New York is 7-11 (.389) against AFC foes dating back to 2001. NYG hasn’t posted a winning record against AFC opponents since going 3-1 in 2000. KC’s lone regular season win against a Tom Coughlin team was a 30-26 win at Jacksonville (12/30/01). KC is 4-2 in regular season Saturday games dating back to ’94.

Chiefs on Pace For Their Best Rushing Defense in a Decade The Chiefs defense has allowed just 94.6 rushing ypg this season, a

figure that ranks sixth in the NFL. Should the KC defense continue that pace for the remainder of the season, it would be the third-lowest rushing ypg average permitted by the club since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in ’78. Over that span four of the top five seasons for rushing ypg allowed in Chiefs history (including 2005) have come under the guidance of Gunther Cunningham as either the club’s defensive coordinator or head coach. Cunningham’s ’95 Chiefs defense allowed a paltry 82.9 rushing ypg, the best tally in a 16-game season in KC annals.

KC hasn’t allowed an individual 100-yard rusher in 20 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. The 2005 Chiefs are seeking to become just the 10th team since ’95 to go an entire season without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Of those nine squads, six made the playoffs – including the ’95 Chiefs – and three advanced to the Super Bowl. The Giants are 17-11 (.607) when RB Tiki Barber has a 100-yard game, including a 5-1 mark in 2005. That only loss was a 24-21 OT setback at Seattle (11/27) when Barber had 151 rushing yards. Vermeil, Coughlin Stress the Importance of the Turnover Table KC is 18-2 (.900) when producing a positive turnover differential

dating back to 2003, including a 9-2 mark on the road. KC has been even or plus in eight of its 13 games in 2005. The Chiefs are +11 (19 takes/8 gives) in their eight wins and -5 (6 takes/11 gives) in their five losses.

NYG is 12-3 (.800) with a positive turnover differential under Tom Coughlin, including a 7-1 (.875) mark at Giants Stadium. NYG is 2-11 (.154) with an even or negative turnover mark under Coughlin, including a 2-5 (.286) mark at home. The Giants are +30 (45 takes/15 gives) in their 15 wins under Coughlin and -15 (16 takes/31 gives) in their 14 losses. If KC could go +2 or better this week, it would bode very well for their victory chances. Dating back to 2003 KC is 13-1 with a +2 or better turnover differential while NYG is 1-11 when -2 or worse. That lone NYG victory came when the Giants were -2 in a 26-23 OT win at Philadelphia (12/11).

Only CIN (38) has registered more takeaways than NYG (33) in 2005. KC is tied for 10th with 25 takes. NYG is second in the league with 100 points off turnovers, trailing only CIN (136). Giants QB Eli Manning has completed 40 of 75 passes (53.3%) for 464 yards with one TD and five INTs in his last two starts, good for a 49.0 rating. KC is 12-2 (.857) dating back to 2003 in games when it registers two or more INTs. Chiefs-Giants Scoring Stats

Kansas City has won 20 of its last 21 games when holding its foes to 21 points or less, including a 7-1 mark in 2005. The Giants are 3-21 (.125) when being held to 21 points or less dating back to 2003, including a 3-11 (.214) mark under Tom Coughlin. The Giants have been held to 21 points or less in three of their four losses in 2005. NYG’s 17-10 win vs. Dallas (12/4) snapped a 10-game losing streak when the club had failed to score more than 21 points.

NYG currently ranks fifth in the NFL, averaging 26.5 ppg (29.7 ppg in its nine wins and 19.5 ppg in its four losses). The Giants are 6-1 at home in 2005 and have outscored those opponents by an average margin of 30.1 to 16.7. It might take 30 points or more to beat the Giants, which isn’t necessarily bad news for the Chiefs, who are 6-1 when scoring 30+ points on the road since the start of the 2003 campaign.

KC Owns the NFL’s Most Productive Offense Since 2001 Dating back to 2001 when Dick Vermeil joined the Chiefs, the KC

offense directed by offensive coordinator/asst. head coach Al Saunders has been the league’s most productive in terms of total yards. With QB Trent Green calling the signals, no team owns more total net yards than KC (29,230). Meanwhile, only Indianapolis (2,123) has scored more points than KC (2,083) since the start of the 2001 campaign. KC leads the NFL in total offense, averaging 380.9 yards per game in 2005. KC’s Defense Set to Square Off Against Another Top 10 Offense The Giants currently rank seventh in the NFL in total offense (357.5

ypg). This week’s contest marks the fifth game the Chiefs defense has gone against an offense currently ranked in the NFL’s top 10. Three of those offenses were ranked in the NFL’s top 10 at the time KC played them and KC held two of those three foes under their offensive average. KC also held Denver’s rushing offense that entered Arrowhead ranked second in the NFL in rushing (165.6 ypg) to 131 rushing yards, 34.6 yards under its season average at the time. The Giants enter this week’s contest ranked eighth in the league in rushing, averaging 128.9 ypg.

QB Trent Green’s December Passing Numbers Are Tough to Beat QB Trent Green owns a 13-6 record as KC’s starter in games played in

December, including wins in six of his last seven December starts dating back to 2003. Over that 19-game span, Green has completed 63.9 percent (373 of 584) of his passes for 5,018 yards, with 33 TDs and 16 INTs, numbers that translate into a 98.5 rating. Green has produced 10 December games with a 100.0 rating or better with KC posting an 8-2 record in those games. Green threw for 340 yards and a 108.9 rating at Dallas (12/11). The Giants own just a 1-9 (.100) record when allowing an opposing QB to post a 100.0+ rating under head coach Tom Coughlin.

RB Larry Johnson Headlines KC’s Potent Ground Game KC is 14-5 (.737) when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to

2003, including an 8-2 mark when RB Larry Johnson rushes for 100+ yards. Since November 1st, no NFL back has more rushing yards (852) or yards from scrimmage (1,042) than Johnson, who has racked up six consecutive 100-yard games over that span. Over that same timeframe, NYG RB Tiki Barber ranks second in yards from scrimmage (940) and is third in the league with 668 rushing yards. Johnson is on to pace to finish the year with 1,540 rushing yards, a total that would rank as the third-best seasonal mark in KC history and would be the most ever by a KC draftee.

The Giants currently rank eighth in the NFL in rushing defense (99.0 ypg), but are just 5-15 (.250) when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2000, including a 3-8 (.273) mark under Tom Coughlin. Dating back to 2003, KC is 23-5 (.821) in games when it boasts two or more rushing TDs, including an 8-1 mark when Johnson does it. The Giants have lost eight of their last nine games when allowing two or more rushing TDs.

(55) and NYG (54) in 2005. NYG is 6-1 when leading at halftime in 2005 … NYG (77 points) leads the NFL in scoring in the final two minutes of the first or second half, while KC is fourth (57 points) … WR Dante Hall has 1,960 combined net yards in 2005 and needs 40 more to join RB Marshall Faulk (’98-01) as the only other player in NFL history to top the 2,000-yard barrier in four consecutive seasons.

For the second straight week, the Chiefs fate came down a big fourth-down play late in the game. This time it wasn’t meant to be, as Kansas City couldn’t make the stop and lost to the Cowboys in a thrilling, 31-28 game at Texas Stadium. Seven days earlier the Chiefs stopped the Broncos on fourth-and-one and sealed a win, this time in Dallas they couldn’t pull it out. Leading 28-24 with 0:42 left in the game, Kansas City needed to hold on fourth-and-goal from its own six-yard line. When QB Drew Bledsoe’s pass to TE Jason Witten was knocked down by S Greg Wesley, it looked like the Chiefs had made the play. However, a defensive holding call gave Dallas an automatic first down at the three yard line. Two plays later Bledsoe found TE Dan Campbell on a play-action pass for a TD and a 31-28 lead with 0:22 left. The Chiefs would mount a furious rally, covering 48 yards in two plays and 15 seconds, setting up a potential game-winning 41-yard field goal try for K Lawrence Tynes. But a low snap helped seal the Chiefs fate as Tynes pushed the kick wide right to give Dallas a 31-28 comeback victory. RB Larry Johnson started the scoring with an 11-yard TD run around the left end for a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Dallas would notch a 34-yard field goal before KC struck again. On the next possession, TE Tony Gonzalez broke the tackle of Pro Bowl S Roy Williams and raced 39 yards down to the Dallas six-yard line. From there Johnson made it 14-3 with a one-yard TD surge. The Cowboys answered with a 71-yard flea flicker to WR Terry Glenn. After getting the ball back from RB Marion Barber on the play, Bledsoe put the ball to Glenn right in stride for the score closing the gap to 14-10 with 3:55 left in the first half. Just before halftime, former Chiefs LB Scott Fujita – who now wears the Cowboys star on his helmet – changed the course of the game. With the Chiefs already leading and poised at the Dallas nine-yard line Fujita blitzed off the edge and nailed an unsuspecting QB Trent Green, knocking the ball free in the process. Dallas DE Marcus Spears scooped up the fumble and raced 59 yards to the KC 26-yard line reversing the momentum. The Cowboys took over with 1:02 remaining and converted the turnover into seven points as Bledsoe threw a 26-yard strike to TE Jason Witten for a touchdown and a 17-14 Dallas lead. Kansas City made a statement in the opening minutes of half number two as Johnson ripped off his third TD of the game, this time from 21 yards out. In the process, Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for a club-record sixth straight game. The back-and-forth contest flipped back to the Cowboys as Glenn scored on a six-yard end around run. The drive was almost squashed earlier as a deflected Bledsoe pass fell through the hands of CB Patrick Surtain, and would have almost certainly been returned for a Chiefs TD. Instead, Dallas took a 24-21 lead with 13:07 left in the game. The Chiefs would answer with a 47-yard TD pass from Green to WR Eddie Kennison to pull ahead 28-24 with 3:55 left in the game. That set the stage for the Cowboys final 14-play, 68-yard drive and game-winning TD from Bledsoe to Campbell.

GAME NOTES• RB Larry Johnson produced a career-high three rushing TDs, giving him 14 on the season to tie for the third-highest single-season total in franchise history.

After the tragedies of September 11th put the sporting world on hiatus in the United States, the National Football League made its triumphant return in Kansas City on September 23rd as the Chiefs hosted the N.Y. Giants. Following a touching pregame patriotic ceremony attended by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, the typically racous Arrowhead Stadium crowd greeted the Giants with a rousing ovation during their introductions in a show of unity as the citizens of Kansas City honored their brethern from New York City. While the pregame patriotism was moving, the Kansas City offense had trouble doing any football moving against New York’s stout defensive unit. The Chiefs would suffer a 13-3 setback in their second home contest of the season. The Giants used a short field and stingy defense to set up a pair of K Morten Andersen field goals and a RB Ron Dayne touchdown on their way to a 13-0 halftime lead. The 2000 NFC Champions held the Chiefs to just 266 yards of offense on the day and became the first NFC team to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead since ’94. The Kansas City offense showed signs of rust after the two-week layoff and managed just a 33-yard K Todd Peterson FG on six trips into Giants territory. QB Trent Green found WR Marvin “Snoop” Minnis free down the sideline, who in turn hauled in a 49-yard over-the-shoulder catch to set up Kansas City’s lone score, which came in the third quarter. However, the play turned out to be costly for the Chiefs as Minnis was forced to leave the game with mild head trauma after his dramatic grab in front of the KC bench. With the offense stalling, the Kansas City defense stayed strong, intercepting three QB Kerry Collins passes and holding the Giants scoreless in the second half. The Chiefs defense also limited New York to 290 yards of total offense and kept the “Thunder and Lightning” RB combo of Dayne and Tiki Barber in check with just 89 yards rushing and a 2.9-yard per carry average. LB Marvcus Patton and S Greg Wesley led the Kansas City defense, each recording 12 tackles and a tackle for a loss.

GAME NOTES• New York’s victory snapped a string of 12 consecutive Kansas City victories at Arrowhead vs. NFC opponents.• The Giants did not permit the Chiefs to score a touchdown, snapping a streak of 64 consecutive games scoring a TD, the second-longest string in Chiefs history.• A firefighter’s boot collection during the game raised $220,706.94 from Arrowhead fans, a figure matched by the Chiefs organization for a total donation of $451,413.88.
