Galva Arts Council Make and Take

O n Saturday, November 24, the Galva Arts Council will be sponsoring our annual “Make and Take” holiday craft event. It will be held in conjunction with the Old Fashioned Christmas

weekend and minitree festival. Children can make an assortment of Christmas ornaments which are geared for ages ranging from 212 years old. The event is planned from 911 a.m. in the Arts Council building. Hours may be adjusted, so watch the Galva News for an exact schedule. A suggested donation of $1$2 is appreciated. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult. If you have any questions or would like to help, please call Melissa Fox at 3093373412.

Mini Tree Festival Returns for 13th Season

T he Galva Arts Council sincerely thanks you for your past entries in the Mini Festival of Trees. As hard as it is to believe , it is time to start thinking about the 2012 Festival. We hope that you will once again consider participating in this holiday event. Due to the positive response to the wreaths, we have decided to offer them again in 2012. Assorted sizes of Mini Trees and wreaths will be available for pickup beginning October 17 at Hathaway’s True Value. We are asking that all trees and wreaths be lit. The decorated item(s) should be brought back to the Arts Council building between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, or by appointment by calling Nancy Anderson at 9323437. GAC would gladly accept undecorated mini trees or wreaths from the past if anyone wants to recycle them instead of getting rid of them another way. They can be droppped off at the

Galva Arts Council any time the building is open for Yoga on Tuesdays from 56:30 p.m., or Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. You can also set up another time by calling Nancy Anderson at 9323437. The trees will be on display during the “Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration” on Saturday, November 24. Hours will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and during the Holiday Coffee House that evening. Additional display hours are Saturday, December 1, from 9 a.m.5 p.m. and Sunday, December 9, from 11 a.m.1 p.m. The drawing will be at 1 p.m. on December 9 in conjunction with the GAC soup luncheon, which runs from 11a.m.2 p.m . Raffle tickets will continue to be $1 each or 6 for $5. Without your help, the Festival of Mini Trees would not have become the success that it is. It is due to the creativity and talents of the artisans in our community that we are able to present one of the most eagerly awaited events of the holi

day season. Thank you for your contributions, and we hope to see you again this year.

July 4th Art Jam

T he annual 4th of July Art Jam was held again this year from 9 a.m.12 noon at Wiley Park. Twenty 4‘x6’ spaces were painted. Pictures of each space were taken and posted on the GAC facebook page. Feel free to check out the wonderful art work. Thanks to all of the artists who gave the Wiley Park blacktop a patriotic look! We hope you paint with us again next year.

The drawing for the winners of the mini trees will be at 1 p.m. on December 9 in conjunction with the GAC soup luncheon, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

E njoy a carefree, relaxing bus trip to Chicago on March 23 for the day to shop or visit the Art Institute and see the Tony Award winning Best Broadway Musical of the year “The Book of Mormon.” Vogue says, “It's the funniest musical of all time.” And The New York Times says, “It's the best musical of this century.” The Book of Mormon is Broadway’s phenomenon from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q cocreator Robert Lopez. The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic gogetter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Elders Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty, and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected. The Book of Mormon is an oldstyle musical with a modern sensibility. This blockbuster show features several big songanddance numbers accompanied by some oldfashioned Broadway belting. An equal opportunity offender, the show playfully pokes fun at religion, sexuality, poverty and race, while inspiring an aftertheshow discussion of religion in general. The charter bus will leave Galva on March 23 at 6:30 a.m. from the Municipal Parking lot and stop for a quick breakfast. Upon arriving in Chicago, students will be visiting the Art Institute. Adults will be free to leave the group to visit friends or shop. The adults will rejoin the group before the musical. We will arrive home at 8:30 p. m. It is very important to sign up early. This show is so popular that the Broadway ticket sales will not let us hold on to these tickets without being sold! Adult reservations will be taken until November 1 with full payment of $98. Fill out form below and send it in with full payment. High school students will sign up and make deposit with art teacher, Beth Russell. She will have a different form for students to fill out. ===============================================================================

KnoxGalesburg Symphony Fundraising Opportunity

I n order to encourage attendance for concerts performed in the Orpheum Theatre by the awardwinning KnoxGalesburg Symphony, the Galesburg Symphony Society Board is offering an opportunity for groups like the GAC to raise funds simply by attending the performances en masse. If a group of 10 or more sign up in advance and attends a performance with each person paying full price for each ticket the symphony will recognize the group during the performance and then, the following week, will issue a check for 50% of the face value of each ticket purchased by the group. The group can then choose to reimburse the participants or can keep the money as a "donation" by each participant. This offer stands throughout the 20122013 season. For more information, contact Karin McIntire at [email protected] or 3098543188.

Galva Arts Council 2012 Photo Show Winners

T he Galva Arts Council Photo Show, held on July 4 during Freedom Fest, was another great success. There were 111 entries in this year’s competition. The photos were judged by Galva photographer, Roger Luft. Luft has chaired the event for the last 10 years and will pass the responsibilities on to someone else now following the 2012 show. Luft stated, “I have appreciated the enthusiasm and support of the many photographers who have continued to enter and share their work. I have also appreciated the longtime support of Community State Bank, Galva Pharmacy, and State Bank of Toulon.”

Congratulations to all of the Winners of the 2012 Galva Arts Council Photo Show.
