COSMOS; Clinical outcomes study of morbidly obese subjects Rationale; Obesity is highly prevalent, nation wide and in our state It is often complicated with other co-morbidities especially among the underserved and uninsured Bariatric surgery is the most consistently effective strategy for long

term weight management especially among morbidly obese subjects

The obesity and weight management clinic in New Orleans was established in November 2010 to begin to address this clinical need while providing the opportunity for clinical research in this unique group of patients.

The clinic is a multidisciplinary center the provides nutrition and dietary counseling, clinical endocrinology, psychiatry, clinical pharmacy, nursing and Surgical oversight of enrolled patients

113 unique patients thus far have been enrolled in the program and bariatric surgery cases began a month ago with 5 cases so far done.

We have worked closely with the Medical informatics core to develop the database for tracking the demographic and clinical outcome variables on the patients (Dr Horswell, Sanjana Singh, Tiffany Prather)

The Medical Consultants Core (Dr Cefalu) have been very helpful in providing ongoing streamlining and development of the clinical program to meet designated needs.

Co investigators on the COSMOS and Obesity clinic project; John Paige, MD, Rachel Moore, MD, Rachel Csaki, MD, Erich Conrad, MD, Lisa Berthaut, RD CDE, Lakia McCray, LPN, Tiffany Prather, RN, Timothy Allerton, MS, Angela Charron, RN, Robert Dubin, MD, Kamran Rasul, MD, Ariane Conrad, PharmD and William T. Cefalu, MD

Multiple ancillary projects ongoing and planned; HDL substudy, NORC substudy, Nutrisystem program, Hypovitaminosis D substudy, seat belts study, taste preference substudy etc

Need to expand available clinical services to meet growing needs

Need to integrate formal exercise and physical intervention program and personnel.

Need an overall program co-ordinator to keep and eye on the “forest”

Need dedicated data manager to both enter the clinical data in real time into the developed RedCap data base and also to manage it

Desire to seek and attain COE accreditation in next 1-1.5yrs.

The Obesity and weight management clinic at NO is now nearly 2 yrs old

The accompanying natural history study COSMOS is about as old

The program is growing tremendously and providing a valuable resource for many other ancillary studies

The Medical informatics core of LICON has been very helpful in helping us reach where we are now

Still a lot remains to be done.

Thank you very much for your kind attention
