Resources: small whiteboard and pen

Getting started• Write the word light on the whiteboard. Ask the children to think of all the

different kinds of light they know of and make a list.

• Let the group look through the book and add ideas to the list.

• Share the title and talk briefly about the spelling of the word lights. Draw

attention to ‘ight’ and mention other ‘ight’ words.

Reading and responding• Ask the children to turn to p140. What is happening in this illustration? (The

sun is going down and the light is fading.) Before reading, ask the children to

find an ‘ight’ word on the page. (night)

• Prompt the children to read carefully, and stop at the end of each sentence.

Show the effect of the comma on p140 when reading aloud, ask them to do

the same when they read.

• Ask the group to read pp142–143 aloud together, praising those who phrase

each sentence carefully and recognise the light part of each word.

• As they continue to read aloud independently, listen in and praise problem-

solving, using words within words and blending.

Returning to the book• In pairs, ask the children to talk about their favourite kind of light and give

reasons or share experiences.

• Investigate the number of ‘ight’ words there are in the text. Allow children to

revise these interest words by referring to pp152–153.

• Return to p150. Discuss how to read this sentence. Choose a child to

demonstrate how the comma affects the sound of the sentence. Give others

a chance to practise this.

• Talk about the importance of light. Ask the children to think of some good

and bad things about light.

Ideas for reading

Checking and moving on• Recap what they’ve learned about light. How many different kinds of light

can they think of?

• Give each child a different kind of light to paint a picture of and label to

make a display.

• Write a story about a character who couldn’t find any light at night.
