Getting started• Ask children to think of any creatures that come out at night. Create a list on
the whiteboard.
• Look at the front cover. Identify the creature shown (hedgehog). Discuss what
the children know about hedgehogs.
• Read the title to the children. List some words that can be used to describe the
hedgehog, e.g. prickly, shy.
• Ask children why Ned is looking for a home, and what they think will happen
in the story.
Reading and responding• Read pp12–13 to the children. Model using a range of strategies, e.g. using
the context, using known parts of words, using the pictures.
• Look at pp14–15 together. Model reading the text fl uently and using the
punctuation for expression, e.g. speech marks and italicised text.
• Ask children to predict what will happen next in the story.
• Ask children to read pp14–23 in pairs.
Returning to the book• Using the map on pp24–25, help children to recount the story in their
own words.
• Ask children to describe how Ned feels at different stages of the story. Add the
children’s ideas to the list of words created earlier.
• Hot seat the children as Ned, and ask questions about the cold, dark night to
explore his character further.
• Ask children to explain why Ned might need to sleep for the whole winter.
Introduce the concept of hibernation.
