Second Sunday of Advent Bar 5:1-9; Ps 126; Phil 1:4-6, 8-11; Lk 3:1-6

On this Second Sunday of Advent the Liturgy presents to us the Gospel passage in which St Luke, prepares the scene, so to speak, on which Jesus is about to enter and begin his public ministry (cf. Lk 3: 1-6). The Evangelist focuses the spotlight on to John the Baptist, who was the Precursor of the Messiah, and with great precision outlines the space-time coordinates of his preaching.

Two things attract our attention. The first is the abundance of references to all the political and religious authorities of Palestine in A.D. 27-28. The Evangelist evidently wanted to warn those who read or hear about it that the Gospel is not a legend but the account of a true story, that Jesus of Nazareth is a historical figure who fits into that precise context. The second noteworthy element is that after this ample historical introduction, the subject becomes “the word of God”, presented as a power that comes down from Heaven and settles upon John the Baptist.

Thus St Luke rightly says that the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness, because the Church was not born from people, but from the Word” (Espos. on St Luke's Gospel 2, 67). Here then is the meaning: the Word of God is the subject that moves history, inspires the prophets, prepares the way for the Lord and convokes the Church. Jesus himself is the divine Word who was made flesh in Mary's virginal womb: in him God was fully revealed, he told us, and gave us his all, offering to us the precious gifts of his truth and mercy.

Dear friends, the most beautiful flower that blossomed from the word of God is the Virgin Mary. She is the first-fruit of the Church, God's garden on this earth. Therefore let us pray to the Mother of the Lord that she may help us, in this Season of Advent, to “rectify” our lives, letting ourselves be guided by the word of God.

“During the Year of Faith, which will last from 11 October 2012 to 24 November 2013, Plenary Indulgence for the temporal punishment of sins, imparted by the mercy of God and applicable also to the souls of deceased faithful, may be obtained by all faithful who, truly penitent, take Sacramental Confession and the Eucharist and pray in accordance with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.

A) Each time they attend at least three sermons during the Holy Missions, or at least three lessons on the Acts of the Council or the articles of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in church or any other suitable location. B) Each time they visit, in the course of a pilgrimage, a papal basilica, a Christian catacomb, a cathedral church or a holy site designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith. C) Each time that, on the days designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith, in any sacred place, they participate in a solemn celebration of the Eucharist or the Liturgy of the Hours, adding thereto the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form D) On any day they chose, during the Year of Faith, if they make a pious visit to the baptistery, or other place in which they received the Sacrament of Baptism, and there renew their baptismal promises in any legitimate form. Diocesan or eparchal bishops, and those who enjoy the same status in law, on the most appropriate day during that period or on the occasion of the main celebrations, may impart the papal blessing with the Plenary Indulgence”.

En este segundo domingo de Adviento, la liturgia propone el pasaje evangélico en el que san Lucas, por decirlo así, prepara la escena en la que Jesús está a punto de aparecer para comenzar su misión pública (cf. Lc 3, 1-6). El evangelista destaca la figura de Juan el Bautista, que fue el precursor del Mesías, y traza con gran precisión las coordenadas espacio-temporales de su predicación. Dos cosas atraen nuestra atención. La primera es la abundancia de referencias a todas las autoridades políticas y religiosas de Palestina en los años 27 y 28 d.C. Evidentemente, el evangelista quiere mostrar a quien lee o escucha que el Evangelio no es una leyenda, sino la narración de una historia real; que Jesús de Nazaret es un personaje histórico que se inserta en ese contexto determinado. El segundo elemento digno de destacarse es que, después de esta amplia introducción histórica, el sujeto es “la Palabra de Dios”, presentada como una fuerza que desciende de lo alto y se posa sobre Juan el Bautista. Por esto, san Lucas dice bien que la palabra de Dios descendió sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto, porque la Iglesia no tiene su origen en los hombres sino en la Palabra” (Expos. del Evangelio de Lucas 2, 67). Así pues, este es el significado: la Palabra de Dios es el sujeto que mueve la historia, inspira a los profetas, prepara el camino del Mesías y convoca a la Iglesia. Jesús mismo es la Palabra divina que se hizo carne en el seno virginal de María: en él Dios se ha revelado plenamente, nos ha dicho y dado todo, abriéndonos los tesoros de su verdad y de su misericordia. Queridos amigos, la flor más hermosa que ha brotado de la Palabra de Dios es la Virgen María. Ella es la primicia de la Iglesia, jardín de Dios en la tierra. Pidamos, por lo tanto, a la Madre del Señor que nos ayude en este tiempo de Adviento a “enderezar” nuestros caminos, dejándonos guiar por la Palabra de Dios.

B) Cada vez que visiten en peregrinación una basílica papal, una catacumba cristiana o un lugar sagrado designado por el Ordinario del lugar para el Año de la Fe. C) Cada vez que en los días determinados por el Ordinario del lugar para el Año de la Fe, participen en cualquier lugar sagrado en una solemne celebración eucarística o en la liturgia de las horas, añadiendo la Profesión de fe en cualquier forma legítima. D) Un día, elegido libremente, durante el Año de la Fe, para visitar el baptisterio o cualquier otro lugar donde recibieron el sacramento del Bautismo, si renuevan las promesas bautismales de cualquier forma legítima. Los obispos diocesanos o eparquiales y los que están equiparados a ellos por derecho, en los días oportunos o con ocasión de las celebraciones principales, podrán impartir la Bendición Papal con la Indulgencia plenaria a los fieles.”
