Dana Statham Dana Statham is a self-taught artist from the Comox Valley, currently living in Victoria, BC. Through thoughtful observations of her natural surroundings, Dana captures vibrant west coast landscapes with acrylic paint. The bold colours she uses invoke feelings of perpetual summertime, and aim to represent her idyllic island lifestyle. Dana is grateful for having grown up on Vancouver Island, where nature could be experienced and then expressed through creative means. The unique gulf islands of Denman and Hornby have influenced many of her warm summer landscapes. Her work has a strong island feel, and often features coastal shorelines, native arbutus trees, and underwater kelp gardens. Dana's work has been featured in galleries and shops on Vancouver Island and Hornby Island, both in group and solo art shows.

To see more of Dana's work on Hornby Island, please visit the Arbutus Arts Gallery in Ford's Cove or The Thatch Gift Shop near the ferry terminal. Art cards are also available at the Hornby Co-op. www.danastatham.com

John Grunewald & Bonita Thornsbury Bonita and John always collaborate on their birdhouses. John handles the woodworking, Bonita takes care of the decoration. They both have right of critique and veto at every step of the process. This particular birdhouse was conceived separately by each of them and their concept drawn out independently. The drawings were close to identical from the start. Their artistic vision is an outgrowth of nearly 40 years on Hornby, and all the inspiration they have gained from this community of talented and endlessly creative people.

Melissa MooreMelissa Moore is an artist based in London, UK, and an Associate Lecturer at University of the Arts London. She has a Masters in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, with distinction for research. Melissa first visited Hornby Island in 1999, invited by a friend who was studying its hand-built dwellings, and was immediately struck by its beauty and sense of restful isolation. Ultimately, her work here is like a dream rather than a document of the island, capturing a feeling of the place. A feeling that has drawn her back, again and again. This photo is from a series titled “Lands End” which has been shown in galleries all over the world.
