Peter Caplehorn RIBA HonMCIAT: The Challenges Facing the Profession

Amongst the key issues facing the profession there are

two key areas.-

The change to a digitised construction industry

And the maturing of the health and safety landscape.

The digital revolution is at last set to embrace construction.

We have been developing tools and techniques for some time indeed you would

have had to have been on mars,

Not to recognise that this is happening all across the industry.

Where are we right now?

What is likely to occur this year?

What does this mean for practice in real terms?

Equally the other great challenge is happening around health and safety.

Can we take on the planning supervisor role with confidence?

Are there any real downsides?

And is it not time we considered health on equal status to safety?

Acoustic Detailing in Framed Construction

"Acoustic detailing in framed constructions - to meet Building Reg.s and enhanced performance"

The presentation will focus on construction detailing to achieve the acoustic performance requirements of the Building Reg.s and beyond in timber frame and light-weight steel frame buildings.

New performance standards are emerging from a collaborative European programme, ISO/NP 19488, which describes an acoustic classification system. While many Europeans are familiar with this concept – “how good do you want the acoustics to be?” – in the UK we have relied on

minimum performance standards in Building Reg.s. The proposed new performance parameters are different to those with which we are familiar; having been agreed between the Europeans countries participating in the COST TU 0901 programme, they correlate better with residents’

experience of sound insulation and acoustic conditions.

Traditionally, timber frame and LGSF construction employed twin stud frames for party walls, sometimes narrowed to single stud frames with resilient bars. Controlling flanking sound transmission is the greater problem, as sound transmission is likely to be dominated by the flanking rather

than the direct sound. Details to control flanking sound through floors and external walls are presented and discussed.

There can be issues with lightweight floors, despite meeting Building Regulations requirements, when the thudding noise from footfall is clearly audible in the flat below. The new performance parameters go some way to addressing this problem, but better assessment is possible, for example

as used in the Swedish acoustic classification system.

The new classification system also includes criteria for noise from building services – ventilation systems, which is welcome, as this is currently unregulated and a big risk if not addressed properly. The risk factors are identified and solutions proposed.

The Real Junk Food Project - The Epitome of Sustainability

The Real Junk Food Project – The epitome of Sustainability

We are all aware of the 3 pillars of ‘Sustainability’ – “Economy, Society and Environment” - this initiative has its origins in a small café in Armley, Leeds, and has now gone global, and whilst not directly to do with construction, it pulls its ethos from the same core values

Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted – Sources: Global Food Losses and Food Waste – FAO, 2011

The environmental crisis: The environment’s role in averting future food crisis – UNEP, 2009

Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth –Sources: State of Food Insecurity in the World, FAO, 2015

We believe that this has to stop, and it needs to happen in our lifetime, to ensure the next generation do not suffer from our ignorance.

Influencing Good Accessible Design

The talk is not a technical presentation on the guidance within Approved Document M or what is mentioned within BS 8300. It is an opportunity for a practicing Building Control Surveyor to sharing his knowledge and help raise the awareness, to those who are involved in the design or

construction of our built environment, who can have the opportunity to influence what could be considered “good accessible design” which in turn will help those with needs.

By the use of photos throughout this presentation, the intention is to raise the standards within our built environment.

Practical application of BIM - the steps involved

BIM is already revolutionising the construction lifecycle process and promises to be a more efficient way of working – but for who? Is it just more standards and procedures applied to an already overloaded bureaucratic system, or are there real benefits to be leveraged by everyone in the supply

chain and beyond?

This presentation bridges the gap between theory and real world practical application of BIM. We discuss examples of success for clients, design teams, contractors and operators along with challenges to overcome. We also discuss the confusion brought about with the emergence of new

roles such as the Project Information Manager and how early client engagement and education can pave the way to success for all involved.

Join us as we take a journey through real world practical applications of BIM and discover the key steps to success.

Our environment is constantly changing. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. We now face unprecedented challenges. Over the next 25 years there are many issues facing Yorkshire Water and the UK water

industry, regulators and society. Coupled with tighter regulatory standards, population and development growth, changes in the global climate will have both direct and indirect effects on local and regional water resources and environmental impacts; and will put our drainage infrastructure under

ever increasing strain. There is therefore a need for increased resilience of our drainage systems.

Integrated storm water management is a long-term objective that fits with the company’s increasing focus on the continuing sustainability of the Business. By integrating wastewater networks using dynamic optimally controlled system we can deliver increased water supply security, river

quality and environmental improvements. However, it can’t be considered or delivered in isolation. No one discipline can address the complexity of challenges in insolation. Co-operation and collaboration with other professions are essential.

Design or Build Compliance and Best Practice

This talk is about design and / or build negligence, Party wall breaches and negligent issues which we are continuing to encounter both in the design and build professions and which on a scale are now far worse than that which was occurring 20 years ago.

The presentation covers the working relationships between various stakeholders to a building project and focuses on the professional duties and integrity of the professional involved.

David has been involved in a number of key court cases and projects involving legal intervention and this talk provides various case studies which allows for open forum and discussion.

Graphisoft - Open BIM

BIM is driving change. Its use is developing rapidly and transforming the way the Construction Industry works. Understanding this process and knowing how to collaborate is crucial for the future of all practices and architects.

This presentation is product neutral and will explain the jargon to help you get started. We clearly identify the reasons for moving to BIM. Presented by an architect and BIM expert, it covers both the benefits and the pitfalls. Attendees are left with a plan to become BIM proficient themselves.

This presentation also covers COBie, FM and the legal and contractual issues of BIM. We compare the main BIM solutions and outline the best process to become BIM proficient.

Bridging the Performance Gap

There is mounting evidence that the measured in situ thermal performance of the building fabric in dwellings can be significantly worse than predicted. In some instances, differences of more than 100% have been measured having a detrimental impact on energy use, CO2 emissions and

occupant thermal comfort. Professor David Johnston will present the results of almost a decade’s worth of testing that has been undertaken on the thermal performance of dwellings in the UK. The techniques used to identify and quantify the building fabric ‘performance gap’ will be discussed.

The presentation will illustrate that it is practically possible to construct dwellings that ‘bridge’ the ‘performance gap’.

Wellbriefing - A User - Centric Design Approach

Wellbeing is quickly becoming a popular word, not just in the building industry but across many industries, as all of these are connected by one thing – people. We’re keen to share our thoughts on the role we can play as designers to support the health and wellbeing not just

of our clients, but of everyone. We share our thoughts on our own website as well as in industry journals and the national press.

Knauf - Fabric Performance to expectation with no negative unintended consequences: Is it possible and how can we achieve it?

The Planning Express - All Change

David’s talk will look at the key issues and challenges facing planning and local councils at this time. This is an unprecedented time of change for planning and his talk will look at legislation that is in the pipeline and the implications that this may have for how planning is

undertaken in this country in the future. Inevitably this will involve him discussing issues such as the housing crisis, flooding, the Northern Powerhouse, energy provision and the changes that are starting to take place in local planning departments. You’ll also get to find out

whether he still has a job following a management restructure of the planning service at Leeds City Council.

Fire Safety in Multi Occupancy Dwellings

The modern design of flats and the desire to have open plan is often at odds with the rules and regulations. BS 9991 offers various design solutions to this problem. The talk will highlight the issues raised and outline what the BS suggest in order to overcome them.

In recent years, the construction industry and government have grown increasingly concerned over the potential gap between design and as-built energy performance. It could undermine a building's vital role in delivering the nation’s carbon reduction commitment targets, present a reputational

risk to the construction industry and damage consumer confidence if energy bills are higher than anticipated. Knauf Insulation have been involved in a number of research studies into the energy performance of buildings, and more precisely the impact which insulation and insulation installation

has on the overall energy demand of a building. In this presentation, we look to share some of our findings focusing on 3 areas, by asking 3 key questions: how do we know the gap exists, how does it affect insulation design and how can we address the problem? The presentation aims to

raise awareness of the issues which affect the performance of a building with a view to helping future design and construction to deliver the fabric performance which is required as expected with no negative unintended consequences.

Career Planning, Social Media and Questions

In this presentation Simon will give a fly through of career planning; what it is, how you can do it and a simple tool that you can use to plot your rise. He will also give a brief overview of using social media professionally; what it is, pitfalls (with examples) to avoid coupled with risks and benefits.

The aim of this brief section is not to turn you in to a social media guru, but to help you decide if it is right for you and if you will indeed see the you want from the time invested. Finally, should time permit, he will be happy to answer any general career or recruitment questions that you may

have.

Beattie Passiv

The presentation will cover the design and delivery of Passivhaus and EnerPHit. With a focus on the how the Beattie Passive patented and certified systems simplify the delivery and cost of Passivhaus. The innovative Beattie Passive System lifts building standards and delivers cost,

performance and quality certainty. Designed into any style, shape and size of property, the simple build system provides full flexibility for architects and a fast and efficient construction process, both on and off-site, delivering Passivhaus energy and comfort standards. The presentation will

touch upon the key stages involved, Beattie Passive detailing and case studies to show how the system is built to achieve Passivhaus Standards easily and affordably.

Building With Sticks

Timber is arguably man’s oldest and most versatile building material. Its use for structure, envelope and decoration relates to its ease of working, availability, favourable material properties and inherent beauty. It is available in a wide variety of colours, textures and lustres, which combined with

its natural growth features makes it highly desirable for interiors. Each timber species has a unique set of properties and the large number of commercial timbers available makes selection of the most appropriate timber a challenge. This workshop will help you better appreciate wood

properties, their variation and their importance when designing, specifying and constructing with timber.

The forms and dimensions of solid timbers available are limited by the sizes and forms of trees from which they are processed. In addition, natural strength-reducing features present may limit their use. This workshop shows how these limitations have been overcome through the development

of engineered wood products which provide larger and stronger/stiffer components which in some cases have forms not present in tree stems.

The importance of sustainable forestry in including carbon sequestration in trees and forest products will be covered so the carbon benefits of constructing with wood can be better understood.

CDM 2015 a year on – Implementing the Principal Designer Role

The Presentation will look at the issues around the definition of Principal Designer, address the topic “who can be a Principal Designer” and how different industry sectors can deliver an effective and proportionate response to carrying out Principal Designer duties.

Many of the issues currently emerging relate to small and domestic projects and in particular to partial services and the presentation will look at scenarios around this type of work.

Simon Owen

Ron Beattie, innovator of Beattie Passive. Both an

architectural designer and practical builder, his combined

knowledge and expertise ensures he has a clear

understanding of all the processes involved from

conceptual design to practical application. Ron's passion

and understanding of all sectors has led to the

development of a practical and achievable building system

that can be delivered with semi-skilled labour on and

offsite and delivers affordable, energy efficient housing. He

has recently launched the retrofit system – the TCosyTM,

which redevelops existing housing stock to near zero

carbon, eradicates fuel poverty and regenerates

communities. Demonstrated across the UK for bespoke,

and social clients such as Fife Housing Association, Orbit

Homes and Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

Tim is currently the Trada University Engagement

Programme Manager, with a masters degree in Timber

Building Conservation. He is responsible for delivering

timber related lectures to under graduate and post

graduate students at universities throughout the UK

studying architecture or engineering related studies. He

has seen the construction industry from all angles, client,

consultant, contractor and educator and in the latter role

has been responsible for developing several courses in

construction and engineering. He has also been a

consultant, a millwright and a civil engineer. Tim has

worked on many listed buildings grades I, II* and II,

carrying out timber conservation work, mainly in traditional

english hardwoods. He has given advice on heritage

issues, for planning submissions for carrying out listed

building work, emergency works and potential stabilising

works required on a scheduled ancient monument. He has

written articles for the society of protection of ancient

buildings and a trade magazine. He has a real passion for

wood as a material and traditional wood working and

carpentry skills.

Andrew trained as an architect and started in professional

architectural practice in 1978. He took an interest in the

CDM regulations and began working on CDM projects in

1996.

time General Manager in 2009, and developed the ICS’

accreditation scheme for CDM Co-ordinators. He has also

acted as a CDM Co-ordinator and lectured regularly on

CDM, construction site safety and asbestos awareness,

and after qualifying as P402, undertook Asbestos

surveying.

Andrew joined APS in December 2014. He manages APS

Membership standards and accreditation processes,

technical input to APS publications and technical queries.
