In October, 1912, British vaudeville song writer Sax Rohmer released the novel, The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu, in serialized form with the completion in June 1913. The novel, which featured the exploits of Dennis Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie in their battle with the Chinese mastermind, Dr. Fu Manchu, was an immediate success. Two more serialized Fu Manchu novels would be released between 1913 and 1917. Sax Romher’s real name was Arthur Henry Ward. He was born to working class Irish immigrant parents in Birming- ham in 1883. In 1886, the family moved to London. His mother, Margaret Mary Furey Ward, would tell Arthur that she was de- scended from Irish general Patrick Sars- field. Upon her death in 1901, Arthur adopted the name, Sarsfield, incorporating it into his own name. Early on, Rohmer had shown promise as a writer. Themes such as alchemy, mys- ticism, and magic were of great interest to him. In 1903, he submitted two stories, the first, "The Mysterious Mummy," to Pear- son’s Magazine; and the second, "The Leopard-Couch," to Chambers's Journal. Both were written under the byline of A. Sarsfield Ward. He expected both to be re- jected, but was pleasantly surprised that they were published. These early suc- cesses were followed by three more titles in Pearson’s Magazine: "The Green Spi- der" in October, 1904, "The Mystery of Marsh Hole" in April, 1905 and "The M'Villin" in December, 1906, all under his Sarsfield Ward non de plume. He started writing sketches for the English dance halls and then songs. For a while during this period, he was living in a flat with three others, one being the nephew of Lewis Carroll. Two of his clients were George Robey and Little Tich, then amongst the premier performers on London’s music hall stages. He wrote a bi- ography of Little Tich, and compiled the sketches of Robey in a book entitled Pause. Neither was attributed to him. In 1908, the song "Bang Went the Chance of a Lifetime" was published with the byline of Sax Rohmer, the first use by Ward of the name. It was written for music hall singer, George Robey. Later songs such as "Kelly's Gone to Kingdom Come" and "The Camel's Parade," published in 1910, were also attributed to Sax Rohmer. Sax Rohmer Ward’s use of pen names would be- come confusing, even for him. Two years later, in December of 1912, "The Secret of Holm Peel" was published in Cassell's Magazine and attributed to "Sarsfield Ward." It is unclear whether this was the author's choice or the editor's. According to the Fu Machu Pages, (edited by Lawrence Knapp) ,… “at one point he is even said to have considered using "Ward Sars," but he was apparently dissuaded when a friend, Clifford Seyler, "politely en- quired how it was to be distinguished from 'Ward's Arse'." His wife, Rose Elizabeth Knox, said that when she first met him in 1904, he was using the name “Sax Rohmer.” Later on she discovered his real name, prior to their wedding in 1909. The name may have come from the roaming Saxons, or from a battle axe the Saxons used. He would still publish under the name Arthur H. Ward until 1913. At that time, he would use the Rohmer name almost ex- clusively. And so shall we now call him “Rohmer.” Rohmer’s main influences were three writers who had strong Irish connections: Edgar Allan Poe, whose grandfather, David Poe, Sr., emigrated to the Colonies from County Cavan in 1750, and supplied the troops with his own money; Arthur Conan Doyle, whose Irish parents emi- grated to Scotland; and M. P. Shiel, who was born into the Irish community of Montserrat. All three had an impact on his writing in different ways. Poe, for his use of mystery and macabre; Doyle, for the sleuthing that his character, Sherlock Holmes, brought to popular literature; and Shiel, whose supernatural and horror sto- ries intrigued the young Rohmer. It was one story by Shiel, however, that most in- spired him: The Empress of the Earth, whose Chinese villain, Yen How, was JUNE 2, 2016 7:00 PM MILWAUKEE MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING Irish Cultural and Heritage Center (2133 W. based on Chinese revolutionary Sun YatSen. Yen How was the basis of FuManchu. Rohmer was a prolific writer, reveling

in the realms of mysticism and horror, andthe exotic locale. He excelled in creatingcharacters in places such as Aleppo, inSyria; Egypt; the Far East; India; MonteCarlo; The United States; Central Amer-ica; and the Vatican. He loved writing ofwitches and sorcerers, mummies and menand women in power. He was also fasci-nated with the word “mystery,” havingused it in the titles of at least sixteen booksor stories. These included MysteriousNapoleon, The Mystery of the MarshHole, The Mystery of the Shriveled Hand, and The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu.

Yet, it took fourteen years between thethird Fu Manchu book and the fourth. Oneof the reasons was that Rohmer wanted tobury his villain, but the financial success,in movies and print, of the Chinese super-villain drove his continued resurrection. Butwhen the good doctor returned, he returnedwith a vengeance. From 1931 to 1959,Rohmer added ten new Fu Manchu titles.

Still, there was more than a little contro-versy about Fu Manchu. The stories wereseen as being racist, and helped to rekindlethe “Yellow Peril” fever in Britain. The FuManchu series drew much criticism fromthe Chinese government and Chinesecommunities in the US for what was seenas negative ethnic stereotyping.

In 1940, with the release of Drums ofFu Manchu, the United States Departmentof State requested the studio make no fur-ther films with the character, as China wasan ally against Japan.

The BBC asked Rohmer to create aradio drama for them in 1945, but not ofthe doctor. Rohmer came up with a char-acter he initially described as “the daugh-ter of Fu Manchu.” The result wasSumuru, a female supervillain. The seriesShadow of Sumuru was broadcast from

continued from page 1 1945-1946 on the BBC Light Programmein eight half-hour shows. This grew into aseries of five novels.

Rohmer continued to write for screen, magazine, radio and published novels untilhis death in 1959. His wife, Elizabeth, would also publish hiswork and her ownwork.

And as for the name, Sax Rohmer, ver-sus Arthur Ward, death seems to havesolved that dilemma. Sax Rohmer died on1 June 1959 in London. He lies buriedwith his wife and parents in the KensalGreen Catholic cemetery of London. Thetombstone is inscribed, “In Memory ofMargaret Mary Furey. Her HusbandWilliam Ward Their Son Arthur Henry,British Author Best Known To His Count-less Readers as Sax Rohmer, 1883-1979,and his beloved wife, Rose ElizabethKnox. 1886-1979. Together in Eternity.

So far, unlike the actions of many ofhis protagonists, no one has breached histomb.

of Hurling in Milwaukee

Sunday, May 15th, marked the Open-ing Day of the 21st season of the Milwau-kee Hurling Club. The MHC is the largesthurling club outside of Ireland and hasadult co-ed league play, men and women’straveling teams as well as three youth levels:U15, U11, and U7 (with some U5 playersmixed into the group). Despite the winter-like temperatures and an early start, hurlersand spectators alike flooded the pitch for afull day of hurling. The day’s agenda in-cluded five adult matches, youth matchesand our annual opening ceremonies. The day started with a rare double-over-

time match between the Shamrock Cluband O’Lydia’s. The results of the intensegame was down to the wire but in the endO’Lydia’s won by a point at the last sec-ond. After such an intense game one, thesecond game of the day between SilverSpring and County Clare proved to be justas intense. Silver Spring House came frombehind to take a win. After the two intenseadult games, the three youth groups tookto the field to showcase their skills. TheU15s showed their swift skills on the fieldwith the Shley Pirates taking the win. Thisyear the U11s were broken into four teamsand their coaches were excited to see whathaving two fields looks like. The U7s werelooking cuter than ever to some, but whenyou looked closely, you saw mightyhurlers with powerful swings.

After their games, the youth players pa-raded to the south end of the pitch, wherethe adults quickly joined them and filedinto their respective teams. As is the tra-ditional start of the opening ceremonies, the adult teams began to parade onto thefield to the sounds of traditional Irish bag-pipes. The youth hurlers followed suit, giving the adult players hurley high fivesalong the way. Some of the youth hurlersand coaches gave a rousing rendition ofour national anthem and the current boardmembers were introduced. After a pas-sionate and inspiring speech by Opera-tions Coordinator, Dave Olson, the hurlershuddled up for a kick-off MHC chant. Theadult league play continued after the cer-emonies and the spectators began to get aglimpse of what each team is capable ofand what the season is going to look like. The third game of the day was a battle

between two long-time sponsoring teamsSlim McGinn’s West and McBob’s. At theend of the whistle, Slim’s came up withthe big win. The excitement continuedwith a battle between new sponsor, TheWinchester and The Irish Pub. In the end,it was Irish Pub’s great passing skills thatcarved out a victory for their team. Thefinal match of the day was between thereigning 2015 champions The MilwaukeeAle House vs the new team sponsor ThreeLions Pub. Three Lions tore out a win in thefinal moments of a long but fun filled day. After five intense adult matches, six

youth matches, three wind-blown tentsand the fun opening ceremonies, the MHCkicked off another amazing season. Sun-day was the first of many fun hurling-filled days this season and the club isalways looking for more members andspectators alike. If you are interested inchecking out the action yourself, comecheck us out this coming Sunday! Formore information or to see the full sched-ule, please check out hurling.net or followus on Facebook.
