CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

October-November 2015

“The Souls of the just are in the hands of God” (Wis. 3:1). Dear Catholic Central community,

We have been blessed in so many ways throughout the first two months of the school year. The new course offerings, All As, the various retreats, High School with a Higher

Calling Luncheon, the success of our fall athletes, and the collection of National Merit scholars are just a few of many successes of note.

As we begin the month of November and commemorate the Feast of All Souls, we call to mind the importance of two of Catholic Central’s core values – Honor and Love – in remembering the dead. In celebrating their lives and respecting their death, the stu-dents and staff of Catholic Central High School offer to you the gift of prayer for loved ones who have gone before us.

If you wish to have the names of your loved ones placed in our Chapel, remembered in our petitions, and held in prayer during the month of November, we invite you to sub-mit their names using the form at http://www.grcatholiccentral.org/news/all-souls-

day-mass-entries/ You may enter the names of as many loved ones as you wish. Please do not send an offering with the name of your deceased loved one(s). This is our gift to you.

As always, you are welcome to join us for our Masses, especially during November on the 5th and 11th at 9:30am in the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, and on November 19th at 9:30am in the gymnasium. We will include the names you submit into our Book of Re-membrance, which will be present at each of the masses throughout the month. If you are unable to join us for Mass, the Chapel is open from 7am-4pm if you would like to

pray for the dead in the company and spirit of our school community. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Yours in Christ,

Autumn greetings to you and your families, This newsletter update on our academic programs and our students’ progress centers on our Core Value “strive,” a word that reflects the importance we place on effort and stretching oneself, which is the primary driver of growth. It reflects a growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, which is a major driver for educational and life outcomes. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - This focus on a growth mindset is reflected in the work in which our staff has been immersed throughout the summer in a faculty/staff book study, during our start-of-the-year meetings, delayed-start PD days and monthly staff meetings. Our faculty strives to model the spirit and mindset that embraces growth and life-long learning, with the goal of best serving our stu-dents’ growth in spirit, mind, and body. September’s meetings focused on preparing for our school-wide student retreats and a teacher-led PD session in the use of technology for teaching and learning (student assessment tools and Google Class-room). In addition, many of our staff participated in a Diocesan-sponsored Catechetical Conference. In October, Science, Social Studies and English departments will share their innovative practices in student-centered learning and Sr. Diane Zerfas, OP will lead a staff presentation on Dominican Spiritu-ality. Also in October, our staff will take part in a day-long PD event centered on differentiating in-struction in each content area, led by Nanette Clatterbuck, C.E.O., Learning Differences Resource Group (LdRG). In addition, many of our staff have participated in outside learning opportunities in these early weeks, including a book study in Neurodiversity, tech-based instruction at Googlefest, a lit-eracy skills camp, and an SAT-preparation seminar, in addition to our school-wide learning opportuni-ties. STANDARDIZED TEST PREPARATION – English, Science, Math, and Social Studies classes have in-corporated SAT and ACT preparation into their classroom instruction and assessment, helping stu-dents become familiar with the content and structure of the tests freshmen, sophomores and juniors take in October. Teachers are also working with students in reflecting on their individual test results, looking at how students prepare for a test and teaching them how to analyze their results to help stu-dents identify strengths and challenge areas, and providing opportunities to re-learn/practice needed skills. STUDENT RECOGNITION – Fall also provides us with opportunities to recognize individual students’ achievements and the effort and striving for excellence that these awards reflect. National Merit Scholarship Program Congratulations to David Pedler who was named National Merit Semifinalist, an honor given to less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors who were among about 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools who took the 2014 PSAT/NMSQT. David has the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships offered next spring. Catholic Central students, Alexandra Baysore, Ellen Bowen, Charles Crampton, Brielle Jaglowski, Ryan Jones, Michael Klein, Cameron Pirochta, and Margaret Pulte are honored as Commended Stu-dents in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students were placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 compe-tition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

The Homecoming football game was held on Friday October 2, 2015. The class of 2016 voted and announced the Homecoming Court which included Shaun Banaszak, Molly Berry, Ellie Bowen, Anna Brady, Rylee DiGiovanna, Maddie Zimelis, John Barcheski, Reece DiGiovanna, Dominic Forbes, John Lipscomb, Ted Russo, and Danny Simmons. Student Congress members held a second vote and crowned of the King and Queen at half time of the football game. A special con-gratulations goes out to Molly Berry and Danny Simmons for their selection! The All A’s walk is a yearly walk that occurs in the fall each year. This important annual fund-raiser raises money to aid the hundreds of students every year who benefit from tuition assistance in addition to helping reduce overall tuition costs for all students. Every student had a goal of raising $75. On the morning of Wednesday October 7, our students walked from Catholic Central to John Ball Zoo, where they meet with students from West Catholic High School in celebration of All A’s. Catholic Central students surpassed the school goal of $55,000 and were rewarded for their efforts with a day off.

Our Open House will be held on October 18, 2015 at 1:00pm. If you know of any friends, neighbors, cousins, or others that are looking for an amazing faith-based educational experience, please encourage them to attend our Open House. Your word of mouth is our best advertisement and we firmly believe that many more students in our surrounding communities need to experi-ence the same opportunities you have given your child.

Uniform Reminders: October 5th marked the last day for students to wear shorts until May of 2016. Students should be in Sunshine Uniform pants (skirts continue to be optional for females). We have extended the selection of outerwear through Sunshine Uniforms this year, so order early to make certain your cold weather gear arrives with time to spare. Our dress code is enforced from 8:00am – 2:58pm, including passing periods, lunches, breaks, assemblies, and all school Mass. Another reminder, on jeans days students are either in full length jeans and the spirit/theme top or full school uniform, not a combination of both.

Lastly, many days are set aside throughout the school year for faculty professional development. These dates should be utilized by families to schedule appointments and seniors to schedule col-lege visits. Please look ahead at the school calendar and make use of these days “off” to be pro-ductive.

CC Celebrates the Papal Visit to the

United States

September 24 was a great day! After Pope Fran-cis began his inaugural trip to the United States, the students watched his historical address to the Joint Meeting of Congress. To prepare for this auspicious event, students discussed questions in their theology classes taken from the Prepara-tory Catechesis for his visit. We started the day with a wonderful prayer service led by Fr. Steve Cron, who tied in the day’s readings to being pre-pared for the truth of Gospel that Pope Francis would surely share. After the address, livestreamed in the gym, discussion ensued in the theology classes around the application of points made in the address. What a wonderful to celebrate and listen to the Pope’s words for us as Americans.

As a continued effort to live out the challenges of our faith life, each home room is choosing a ser-vice project to carry out during the 40 Days of Life as a direct result of what the students heard in the Pope’s address. We are tabulating the pro-jects and will release the cumulative effort of our students at the end of the 40 Days.

Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary

October 7 was the feast of Our Lady of the Ro-sary, and it also was the day of our All A’s Walk. So in celebration of this feast day, we prayed a living rosary before we left for the All A’s Walk.

Retreat Days

In the fall, we celebrate our community retreat days.

Freshman—Freshman First Day was a great day spent at Catholic Central coming together as one school formed from the many middle schools our freshmen attended last year. They came together through prayer and celebration of the Eucharist as well as community-building activities.

Sophomores—Sophomore Community Day at Camp Roger was a perfect day for tying our core values into class goals through commu-nity-building exercises, discussion, and prayer.

Juniors—Junior Poverty Awareness Experience was fantastic. Students gathered on Sunday night for a poverty simulation, meal, and a thought-provoking movie followed by discussion before they set up camp outside in the mall to sleep for the night. This was an extremely eye-opening night.

Seniors—Since they had already attended COREX in August, they split into teams for Sen-ior Service Day. Many sites around town bene-fitted from the time and talent of our seniors.

Please watch for future information for the Spring Spiritual Retreats for each class.

40 Days for Life

In addition to the service projects each homeroom is doing during the 40 Days for Life, the Respect Life Student Group will be praying in front of the women’s clinic each week. Students meet in the courtyard every Wednesday or Thursday after school to walk over to the clinic to pray. All are wel-come to join us!

Peer Ministry News

Monthly Peer Ministry Meetings began October 4 from 1-2:30 pm.

Campus Ministry Advisory Council

We have set up prayer lockers on each floor of the school. These lockers are available for student intentions throughout the week. The intentions will be collected from the lockers and delivered to the Adoration Chapel, where volunteers will pray for those intentions each week.

CMAC is also looking for faith stories to share on the 2nd floor North bulletin board. We know that witnessing our faith to one another will enliven the Spirit working in the school.

Adoration Chapel Opens for the Year

The opening prayer service of the Adoration Chapel was on Monday, October 5. If you would like to be on the team of Adorers, please contact Toni Ruthven, 530-8973.

New additions for this year:

1. Prayer cards—During the holy hours, every student and faculty member will be in prayer through-out the year. As each person is prayed for, they will receive a card letting them know that they were in prayer that day.

2. Prayer lockers—Adorers will also pray for those intentions from students and faculty put into the prayer lockers available on each floor of the buildings. They will also receive a prayer card as well.

All Students - The teachers posted progress grades for the 1st Quarter on September 24. Parents

are encouraged to review with your student his/her posted grades on Infinite Campus. This is a wonderful

opportunity to discuss academic goals and how to access the resources available (see tutoring schedule online) for student success. Invite your student to communicate regularly with teachers. Also, help your

student create the habit of checking their grades weekly.

TESTING Day - Wednesday, October 14 (morning only):

Freshmen and Sophomores will be taking practice SAT tests while the Juniors will be taking a full-

length practice ACT. Students will need to bring #2 pencils and their calculators. The cost of these tests is

included in tuition; students will not be charged any additional fee.

Additionally, Juniors have the option to take the PSAT/NMSQT. The National Merit Scholarship Cor-

poration will use these scores (from top 99th percentile of 11th grade students nationally) to identify Na-

tional Merit Semifinalists next fall. Students who typically score above the 90th percentile on standardized tests may want to consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Those that choose to take the PSAT will have the option of taking the practice ACT on Friday, October 23rd. Counselors will be meeting with students during their

English classes prior to the test date to give them more information about the tests and testing procedures.

Seniors are encouraged to visit college campuses (no classes October 14 & 23) and to complete their

college applications as early as possible this fall. They will receive optimal consideration in the admissions

process and for scholarship opportunities. Information and reminders for seniors are communicated in Navi-

ance and the Daily Announcements. Remember- “no trick-or-treat ‘til your apps are complete!” Applications

should be submitted electronically. Requests to have transcripts sent should be made through Naviance, ac-cessible on our school website. Also, applying early will insure that your student will be able to become eligi-

ble for institutional merit-based financial aid from the colleges where they receive acceptances. Also, schol-

arship listings can be found on the Naviance link (see our school website under the Academics tab). Addi-

tional scholarship search engines (free subscriptions) are linked within Naviance.

Winter Sports registration will take place in the cafeteria during lunch periods on Thursday, October 22nd. Students must have a Physical Exam on file in the athletic office that was performed on or after April 15, 2015 in order to participate in winter athletics. Exams are available, for a fee, at various medical facilities around Grand Rapids. Students may not tryout or practice without a completed physical examination on file. Forms are available at school and on the athletic website (www.grccathletics.com – Forms tab). Completed physicals must be turned in directly to that athletic office.

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY (SANP) CORNER

Senior All Night Party Co-Chairs, Bruce & Jen Hartman and Steve and Mary Beth Child have been working with a dozen committee chairs since June to ensure a memorable

SANP on May 18, 2016. To date there have been 3 successful fundraisers including a Used Uniform Sale, 2 Bottled Water Sales, and Cougar Open. The senior students attended an

information session explaining the details about the upcoming Apple Pie and Wreath/Poinsettia sales and were given handouts/order forms. These are the two largest fundraisers for SANP. All senior parents also received an e-mail on Sep. 15 announcing

these sales, the details, and a volunteer link. If you have difficulty with the link you may also type: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D4BADAB22A20-apple to volunteer for pie set-up/pie-making/clean-up, Nov 14-15. Seniors are encouraged to volunteer along

with parents. If you have questions about the Apple Pie Sale contact: Heidi Tierney- [email protected] or Wreath/Poinsettia questions contact Kelly Burns- rockford-

**WE CARE PARENT ORGANIZATION NEWS**

Thank you to the parents who were able to complete the We Care Volunteer form from your sum-mer packet or Welcome Back Night. While we have received 50 forms, we would appreciate many more volunteers. E-mail the Co-Chairs if you can assist. We recognize that with your busy lives it is difficult to volunteer in person but your donations of food/products for Ministry fair (Nov 12), retreat luncheons, dances, teacher appreciation days, treat days and more are needed. The We Care organization needs 300 volun-teers each year for up to 30 events. The We Care mission is very simple. We are there to serve every student with spiritual enrichment through the Ministry Fair and Eucharistic Adoration (students & parents), or simply add a compo-nent that makes an event a bit nicer, show how much the parents care for them, and sometimes just make the day fun. The CC staff benefits by having “extra hands” to support an event that they are organizing. Who doesn’t like those “little things” to make their day?
