Further down the track, they may even be able to assist us in the development and implementation of an ‘Innovations’ course of some type. Following our meeting on Tuesday, I sent Ms Mulcahy and Mr Vogrig a copy of our ILP program and samples of previous students’ work for them to look through so that they could get some idea of how the CSIROs resources might best be introduced for our students. We are certainly looking forward to developing this partnership. 17 July 2015 – Newsletter No 21

From the Principal Welcome Back I would like to welcome all of our students, families and staff back to a very busy Term 3 after what I hope has been a relaxing holiday period where you had the opportunity to spend valuable time with family and friends. We have certainly started off at a brisk pace as you will see in this newsletter and we look forward to continuing to support our students across the variety of programs and experiences that they will be involved in. CSIRO Partnership Negotiations are now well underway between our school and the CSIRO to develop a learning partnership where our staff and students will have access to CSIRO staff and resources for a variety of learning experiences. With thanks to the involvement of parents, Mr John Kraft and Mr Bill Hawkins, we were able to meet with the Executive Manager of the CSIRO Education and Outreach program, Ms Mary Mulcahy and the Manager of their School Experience program Mr Darren Vogrig to discuss the logistics of the CSIROs involvement in our school. Initially, we are suggesting that the CSIRO may be able to provide support to our Year 10 students through the development, presentation and possibly even publication, of their Independent Learning Projects.

Careers Information Evening On Tuesday evening, our hall was full with a wonderful attendance of Year 11 and 12 students and their parents at our Careers Information Evening. Keynote speaker, Professor James Arvanitakis, Head of the Academy, Corporate Strategy and Services from the University of Western Sydney, gave a wonderful account of the skills necessary for young people as they move into tertiary education and beyond. His message focussed on skills like adaptability and ‘mistakeability’ rather than content knowledge and application.

In addition to Prof. Arvanitakis, we were honoured to welcome back to our school a number of former students who were able to give an account of some of their experiences post-Manly SC. It was intriguing to hear the variety of contemplations

that they had gone through in their university studies, professional lives and life in general. Again, a key message from them was that it is okay not to know what you want to do or where your life might be headed, because ultimately, you will find your passion and, as long as you are prepared to be adaptable, you will find your niche for success. Some quotes from the night:

Parent Teacher Night Last night we were pleased to welcome into our school the parents of our Year 9 and 10 students for the final Parent/Teacher Night of the year. This was extremely well attended and again, is another indication of the support that we receive every day from our wonderful parent community. These nights are a perfect conduit for us to provide feedback on each student’s learning and work with parents to ensure that there is a shared understanding of what we are endeavouring to achieve.

I would like to remind parents that these evenings are not the only opportunity that you have to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers. We are happy to address any concerns that you have at any time. If these situations do arise, please do not hesitate to contact the school and make an appointment to see that appropriate staff member. Buchan Shield Rugby Yesterday we saw our school compete in the NSW CHS Buchan Shield Rugby Knockout for the first time in many years. Our school played against a very strong Brisbane Waters Secondary College team (the school that won the statewide competition last year) to determine who went through to the quarter-final stage of the competition. Unfortunately, our boys were defeated, but in contesting the game, we could not

be prouder of the determination and commitment that they displayed despite being behind on the scoreboard for much of the game. Thanks go to Mr James Blanch for organising this opportunity for our students and coaching them in readiness for the game. Hopefully, we can now build upon this initial foray into the competition and prepare better for 2016.

Trial Higher School Certificate It won’t be long until our Year 12 students embark on their Trial HSC. In fact, for some students, this will start next week with some of the performance and practical components of subjects being examined. For the vast majority, trial HSC written examinations will begin on Monday, 27 July and we wish all students well in all aspects of these examinations. I hope that as a result of Wednesday’s Careers Night, students realise that it is acceptable to make mistakes and that learning from the mistake is the key takeaway point. I have complete confidence that, to this stage, all students have done all that they can to prepare for each subject and that this will continue. Remember this slide…

From the Deputy Principals

A hearty welcome back to school for all students and staff. This term is a very busy term with BOSTES compliance matters for each of Years 8, 10 and 12. Year 8 will receive their subject selection booklet at their Year Assembly and Year 10 will receive their interview sheets for subject selection interviews in Week 4 at their respective Year Assemblies in Week 2. Year 12 have received their Trial HSC timetable in hard copy today, and Year 12 major projects are in their final stages if not already complete so a great load has shifted off many shoulders.

Subject selection is an important step in the self-direction of a student. Making choices that suit the individual, not the friendship group is critical to future success. Friends will be there at recess and lunch always, whilst during class time students need to follow their passion. Research shows that those who follow their passion do quite well. Whether this is because they enjoy the subject, or they enjoy the success is possibly a "chicken and egg" question. The most important thing is that the student is happy and that they are pursuing their own interests.

Teachers were treated to a very valuable professional learning day on Monday this week. The day was conducted in an extraordinary manner by Ms Bianca Hewes our Head Teacher Teaching & Learning. It was a vibrant, high energy day that had staff laughing as well as completing a large amount of mandatory work toward our personal professional goals. Our congratulations and thanks is extended to Ms Hewes for skill and effort applied.

Barbara Bannister (Deputy Principal Years 8, 10, 12)

------------------------ This term the Year 7 PAL’s program starts Week 3, during the EAM line. PAL’s stands for Peer Academic Leaders who are Year 10 students. This program is structured in the same way as Year 7 Peer Support, however there will be new groups and different Year 10 leaders. There will be 5 sessions focusing on the areas of Self Awareness and Self Belief, Time Management, Academic Resilience and Personal Best. In the past this program has received very positive feedback from students and teachers.

Thank you to all the Year 9 parents and students who attended the Parent Teacher night on Thursday night. This event provided an opportunity for teachers to give valuable feedback to students and parents. If you were not able to attend and

would like to discuss your child’s progress please contact the school to arrange a meeting. This week 22 Year 9 students will be starting to work on their High Resolves Social Action project. In this program students will explore the attributes of effective leadership and start to develop skills to become an effective leaders. The skills learnt are then put into practice and enhanced through a hands-on social action project to create a positive impact in the school community.

At their Year assembly next week Year 11 students will be receiving information about the Year 11 into Year 12 interviews. During Week 5 each student will be required to have a one on one interview to discuss future Career options, subjects for Year 12, strategies for dealing with the pressure of the HSC and indicating whom they would prefer as their Year 12 teacher mentor. Year 11 students will find this a most valuable experience as they move into their HSC year.

Mrs Deb Rixon Deputy Principal Years 7, 9, 11 (Rel)

YEAR 10 INTO YEAR 11 INTERVIEWS

Parents of Year 10 students are advised that there will be an interview process during Week 4 Term 3 for students who will enrol in Year 11 2016. Each interview will last no more than 20 minutes and parents/carers are strongly encouraged to attend with their Year 10 student.

To assist with this process each year 10 student will receive an interview sheet during Week 2 which must be completed prior to the interview. At the interview, students will have an opportunity to discuss their subject choices, make any changes as necessary and link their Stage 6 subject choices to their post-school aspirations/wishes.

A booking code will be distributed to parent email addresses on July 17th. Students will receive a copy of the interview sheet for reference and discussion at home prior to completing it to bring to interview in Week 4.

We look forward to working closely with every Year 10 student during that week.

Calling all MSC families – participate in our Art Showcase and MSC Winter Soiree What is it? A showcase of art produced by the wider MSC community (students, parents, friends, staff, local artists and even a local identify or two). You don’t have to be a renowned artist to be a part of it – everyone is encouraged to have a go and contribute an artwork.

Why do we do it? Not only is it lots of fun, but it is a great social event for our community and also our major fundraiser for this year (we sell the artworks and the school reaps the profits).

What does Art 61 mean? This event is run every 2nd year and the “61” relates to how long the school (MSC) has been operating. Each event has a theme which the artwork will represent.

What is the theme? The theme for 2015 is “Life on the Northern Beaches” – you can interpret and represent this any way you please (as long as it’s on the 25x25 canvas). Whether it’s traditional paints or another media such as a collage or photography or even beading or quilting – if it can be put onto the canvas you can submit it. Check out http://art61.weebly.com/ and follow the links to previous years for inspiration.

What happens to the artwork? An exhibition is held at MSC (19-21 August) during which all the artworks are displayed – but the names of the artist is not revealed until all sales are completed. Choose what appeals to you and be surprised later by who the artist is.

How do I get involved? There’s several ways:

1. As a participant (artist) – grab a canvas from the MSC office (it’s important you get it from here so that we know who is participating and to ensure all the canvases are the same size).

2. As a supporter – maybe submitting an artwork isn’t for you, however you can get involved by:

Support an artist – sponsor a canvas ($10 each – talk to the MSC office)

Donate a prize – as part of the showcase (Art61 Winter Soiree) we will be holding a silent auction/raffles. If you are able to provide a prize, we would love to hear from you.

View and purchase artworks – during the exhibition (19-21 August at MSC), artworks are available for viewing and purchase.

Become part of the organising team – contact Sharon at [email protected] or on 0434 394 899

3. Join us at the Art61 Winter Soiree –Friday 21 August 7:00pm – 9:30pm for a fun night of socialising (adults only), art viewing, drinks & canapés, music, live & silent auctions. Save the date, bring your friends and come along for a great night.

What to do right now: Become an artist – grab a canvas from MSC and return by 31 July. Encourage your family & friends to participate (there’s a special prize for one participating MSC student) Save the date of 21 August for the Soiree – more details in the coming weeks Contact Sharon –on [email protected] 0434 394 899 if you can help out and/or provide a prize

Warm welcome to Brian Buggy and Liz Scott for Term Three We are very fortunate to have Brian Buggy and Liz Scott join the strings program to conduct SE and CO this term.

Wow! Jazz Orchestra with James Morrison As summed up by Jeff Quinn (Jazz Orchestra’s parent rep and father of Hannah): The Sir John Clancy Auditorium has been the venue for some outstanding concerts though, biased as this writer may be, it has rarely heard the likes of a group of teenage musicians and Australia’s most prominent jazz “organised noise” maker as they treated their audience to a blissful musical experience.

Schools from our wonderful public education system and private ones too came to play with James and John Morrison but it was the musicians from MSC that made the place hum in syncopated sustenance for the ear. Our soloists excelled, Isaac Arnold, Tom Dowse and Ben Devries, visibly affecting the great man himself and James and John Morrison too, as they dominated the stage with their powerful and precise performances. Our vocalists (Ella Clarke, Alex Young, Connor Lambrou, Taylor Rowe and Justine Kim) were equally appreciated, entertaining all with their range and harmonies, their stage presence and sheer “amazingness”. What a credit to our “great man” Craig whose love of music and ability to enthuse his students with that love was clearly evident at a concert that will be cherished in the memories of all lucky enough to be there.

City to Surf Fundraiser, Sunday 9 August 2014 Every year the Bands of MSC are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programmes. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. MSC is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events. See flyer at end of The Weekly Pines. Call Angela Aguam on 0422 618780, or email [email protected] to volunteer for this event. Everyone is welcome.

CALL OUT TO MSC STUDENTS and FAMILIES! Sunday 9th August 2015

Every year the Bands of MSC are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programmes. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. MSC is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events.

What we have to do

Take bags belonging to the runners from trucks and place them in numerical order so that when the runners arrive at the finish line we can give the bags back to them.

What we get LOTS OF FUN, beach morning and community spirit!

We get paid for every person who attends: family, friends, this is open to everyone, not just MSC students, although we want to see as many of you there!

In 2014 we raised almost $4000. More people = > $$

Event T-shirt Sausage sizzle Sun Herald

A school achievement award for community service (equivalent to 4 x pink merits)

10kg block of chocolate for the school year with most participants

Year 10 students – 6 hours can go towards your 20 hour volunteering quota.

Details

Location: Near finish line at Bondi Beach

Arrival time: 6:30am Estimated finish time: 12:00pm (due to road closures)

Parking: Limited car parking is available, so car pooling is a must! If you can bring a car full of people we can probably get you a parking permit at a nearby car park. There are shuttle buses to take us from the car park to the beach.

Contact: Call Angela Aguam on 0422 618780, or email [email protected] to volunteer for this event. Everyone is welcome.
